Rachel’s kitchen makeover is nothing short of amazing. Here’s her letter:
I love what you guys are doing at Young House Love – you are such an inspiration! In fact, I combed through your blog for helpful hints before my husband and I tackled our first major renovation, the kitchen. We moved here to Richmond 3 years ago and purchased a 1920’s bungalow that needed a little TLC. In February, we were down to one working burner on our stove, the refrigerator door was broken, the plaster walls were in bad shape, and the layout was just not working for us, so it was time for a serious update. Thanks for all the inspiration! -Rachel
Isn’t eventhing from the sliding barn door that hides the laundry room to those lovely shelves under the ceiling-mounted cabinets (very reminiscent of this amazing Cottage Living kitchen) just the bee’s knees? And of course you know we love a white kitchen and those white marble counters are nothing short of fabulous. To read more about Rachel’s fabulous kitchen makeover just head over to her lovely blog. Thanks so much for sending the yummy eye candy our way, Rachel! Deeeelicious.

Wow I love absolutely everything about this kitchen! Rachel, you and your husband did an amazing job! Is that really granite on the countertops? – it looks just like marble. Stunning kitchen.

Wow. This is unbelievable! Had to finally comment because this is one of my favorite before/afters I’ve seen. Where are the knobs from on the kitchen cabinets and drawers? Love the subway tile too.

Very nice. Shows that a kitchen doesn’t have to be gianormous to be efficient, roomy and lovely.
Amy says
I covet this kitchen. I know “Thou shall not covet…” but this kitchen is worth coveting. Awesome!
Bethie says
Beautiful! I especially love the French Laundry cookbook. We have the same one. Seeing how pretty it is displayed in your kitchen, we may have to do the same (once it is renovated of course!). I would also love to know where the cupboards granite are from. We are also in the area and are keeping an eye out for goodies for when we are able to finish our kitchen renovation.

I am in love with this kitchen! What an amazing job. That tile, those cabinets, the barn door…it all goes together so perfectly! Do tell…where is the barn door fom? And that great cookbook stand?
Lou says
Lovely subtle colours Rachel.
I also like that you’ve taken the cupboards up to the roof (nothing worse than those dust-collecting cupboards that don’t). AND those gorgeous task lamps over the breakfast-bar.
Doesn’t the room look so much brighter with the wall removed?
Did you do this work all yourselves?
Amy says
this is absolutely beautiful. understated and elegant! nicely done. can’t wait to check out your blog, rachel!

Saw the source list…. what about the floors? I’m in love with the whole shebang, but I’m really wondering about the floors, would love to do those in our house!!
Thanks!
rachel@urbannestblog says
I wish I knew where the barn door itself was from… We purchased it directly from our contractor, and it was a very inexpensive door. I’ll see if I can dig anything up.
The cookbook stand is an old one from Crate and Barrel. They don’t carry that exact one anymore but this one is very similar: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=790&f=5350&q=cookbook+holder&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1.
The only work we did ourselves was the design, then our contractor took it from there. If you’re in Richmond, we worked with Deep Run Renovations and were very happy.
I think the last question is the floors. Our contractor sourced these for us as well and matched our existing oak hardword floors. I believe the floors were Bellawood.
Let me know if I missed anything!

My word, that is a gorgeous kitchen! I especially love the corner shelves and the barn door – what a unique idea! :)

WOW – stunning, absolutely stunning. I LOVE the barn door, fabulous and I love the small shelf under the cabinets, what a great way to display pretty jars etc.. and have easy access to things you use regularly…..fabulous job guys!!!!

That backsplash makes my knees weak – I love it! I knew exactly which kitchen they were talking about when they mentioned that they used one for inspiration. One question: where is the microwave? Am I missing it?
rachel@urbannestblog says
The microwave is hidden in the pantry! We converted an old closet under a set of stairs into our pantry and had the electrician add an outlet so that we wouldn’t need to use valuable counter-space for the microwave.
Alana says
the kitchen looks AMAZING, i am re-doing mine as well and if anyone needs any new accessories to add a little liveliness i added some wine and martini glasses from Designs by Lolita. i found them on http://www.thelolitastore.com and they recently just came in. i love them! definitely check it out :) enjoyy!! the kitchen looks great again, awesome job.
misty says
This is a beautiful kitchen. The wine cubbies above the fridge are great and The little cafe corner for the coffee is perfect for that tiny space (shown in the picture with the barn door).
and speaking of the barn door…love it! we just did this in our (very old-1797) house as the bathroom door. I had to do alot of convincing to get my husband to agree to this feature (he did not want to spend the money on the hardware and track) and now he is just as thrilled with it as i am. space saving and easier for us to install than a regular door (since our walls are just 3/4″ thick boards). it is my favorite feature of our recent bathroom remodel. btw, you can use any off the shelf door, as long as you can get it or make it the right size. we got ours from Lowes and cut 4″ off the bottom to make it fit in our weird old house (our doorways are just shy of 6′ tall)

i am drooling! the barn door, the subway tile, the extra shelf under the cabinets, the floors, the countertops, the light fixtures, the hardwarde…f.a.b.u.l.o.u.s!
Laura says
This is absolutely beautiful… I am in love with your floors. I know you said Bellawood brand… but what type of wood is that?
jina says
I love this kitchen too! I think the consensus is we are all drooling! Quick question… is it hard to get in to your cabinets? I am 5’2 and I was thinking I would never be able to reach… do you use a step stool, or are you just taller than me? :)
rachel@urbannestblog says
Hi Jina,
I’m 5’5″ on a good day, and I was worried about getting in to the cabinets, too! I have all of our everyday dishes, glasses, coffee mugs, wine glasses and spices out on the open shelf, so I rarely even open the cabinets. I have no trouble reaching the first shelf in the cabinets, but after that I have to use a step stool. I keep one tucked just behind the barn door.
Laura,
The floors are oak.
Thanks for the great feedback!
Rachel
