After mentioning our near cross-country road trip last week, did you find yourself wondering how we entertained ourselves for over forty hours of driving? Well, we filmed a lot of it with our trusty Flip video camera. And we spent this past weekend not in the car (hootie hoo!), but trimming down all that footage into a little musical montage video of our road-trip-on-steroids.
For those curious enough to take the journey with us, we can promise you’ll see:
- Some less than healthy drive-thru decisions
- A bit of behind the wheel dancing
- Grade A nerd behavior in the form of a geographic-tastic driving game
- Sherry in bed with another woman
- Obligatory Burger footage
- Absolutely zero footage of Sherry driving (because it never happened)
- Fast-food inspired decorating ideas (we didn’t say they’re good)
- Sherry with her hair down (yes, for all you why-don’t-you-lose-the-ponytail peeps)
- Visiting cultural attractions – scratch that, visiting a Pottery Barn Outlet
- A preview of our adventures with the Bowers and my cousin’s wedding, which we’ll share more of soon.
So, without further ado, please enjoy the virtual road trip below…
And while we’re on the subject, tell us where we can get a sneak peek at some of your summer travels. Got any good road trip stories to share? Photos posted somewhere to view? If anyone else has iMovied a little road trip video, we’d love to see it. Long live long drives!
jen says
Awesome roadtrip video! I have to admit I didn’t get to watch the whole thing (because I’m “working“) but I enjoyed the mini-trip with you!
Is it bad that your Taco Bell run made me hungry so early in the morning?!!?
Cecilie says
Thank you for taking us along – what a GREAT video. Having move to Germany from Denmark we go on road trips regularly and just took one this week-end. 1300 miles in 2 days… Maybe we ought to film it to make it more fun.
Donita says
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!! What a great video………LOVE TRAVELING!!! I’m tired just from watching your video. You guys make my mornings. ;-) I can’t wait to see the wedding pics, the couple are gorgeous. :-D Thanks again. We live in Wa state, so your video is probably the closest I will ever be to those states. :-P
Chelsea says
AAAHHH Road Trips!! My husband and I made it from Williamsburg, VA to Los Angeles in 2 and half days…we were on a serious time crunch!! We didnt get it on film, or have a furry companion like you youngsters! We met interesting people in the middle of no where, New Mexico, survived wind storms in Oklahoma (where the winds go sweeping down the plains), hit almost all the dairy queens for a blizzard, and saw the sunset on the Mississippi River while crossing into Arkansas! We lived on pure exhaustion, but we made it to tell the tale that there is almost nothing down I-40!! Next time for sure we will have to video it like you guys!
Heather says
I watched the WHOLE thing and it was awesome!! You guys have some editing skillz. This is gonna be so fun to look back on when you’re old and wrinkly lol Miss you guys xo
Rebekah says
So fun — great video!
I spotted a shot of an XXX store? Eek!
Mia says
I’ve been following you guys for almost a year. I really enjoyed seeing this video b/c it showcased your every day quick-witted, silly personalities.
Not only are you super talented, but you truly love life and each other as friends and spouses. Kudos and viva la road trips!
On a side note, I just finished painting my 1950s knotty pine kitchen white and used your step-by-step, hoping to send pics when it’s completed…
Martha says
Great video! But you guys HAVE to eat healthier on your road trips LOL!!
Blair says
Love it! You witnessed first-hand the giant peach of Gaffney! I have seen that on a road trip in the past, and, like you, I have no idea why it is in SC instead of GA!
Tashia says
That was cute! Don’t you just love your flip video? We got one to take video of our new baby. It’s so easy to use! But I wish we had the new HD version! Can’t wait to see more!
Laura says
Love the video! And we’re big fans of road trips, even with 5 kiddos in tow! Yes, it can be done but somewhat insanely… We’re on the East coast and family is on the West coast and in Texas- with best friends in SC and Florida, so that makes for some crazy, marathon driving.
Can’t wait to see the wedding!
marianne says
You two are so much fun! Love the video, thanks for taking us along!
caro says
love that you guys did the video . . . looks like you have so much fun together! but didn’t you get on each others’ nerves at all during the 41 hours?!
thanks for sharing your trip!
Jenni says
I loved the song you used. What was it?
YoungHouseLove says
Jenni- So glad you love the song. We do too (in fact it’s been in our head for days). There’s a url where you can find the song at the end of the video (we love musicians who allow anyone to use their songs as long as you credit them!). Hope it helps!
Kelly- I have only driven for 6 months of my life. Crazy, eh? I moved to NYC for college right after getting my license (and there’s no need to drive there with the subway and all that). Because I stayed there for over 6 years without driving I got a little rusty. Then we moved to Virginia and I slowly started to drive here and there (I have always had a license, I just rarely actually drive). But since we only have one car and John uses it most of the time he’s still the primary driver (we love being a one car household and save tons of money since I work from home and don’t need one on a daily basis). I always say I’d be happy to drive to relieve John on road trips but we always both say soon and go back to singing/dancing/license plate spotting and before we know it we’re at our destination. Maybe next time…
Oh and Burger only pants when we’re both sitting in the sun (when the sun shines through onto our side we both get pretty overheated so he pants a bit and then I blast the air) so I don’t think it’s car sickness. He’s been going on long road trips with us for years so he’s pretty good at being in the car- and usually just sleeps most of the way. We feel very blessed that he’s such a good traveler. Here’s hoping our future kids are the same!
Abigail- Love the state lion joke. We’ll definitely give you a roar next time!
Laura- We actually don’t use the WordPress app when it comes to our iPhone and just manually log into the dashboard of our site as we would on any other computer (entering the url and the password) and publish posts the same way we do on our MacBook at home (click the publish button and hold our breath). Hope it helps!
xo,

Kelly says
I love road trips!! Great video. Sherry, why didn’t you do any driving??
Our dog pants just like Burger when she is in the car. I asked the vet about it and it’s a sign of nausea… I hope poor lil’ Burger wasn’t carsick!!
Thanks for sharing! Love your blog!
casey k. says
Awe! Great road trip. I’m jealous some *other* casey got to see you guys while you were here though. hahaha.
Kristen says
Haha – this was too much fun! Great road trip video! It makes me want to go on another road trip with friends! :)
I can’t wait to see pictures of the wedding and cool things you found in PB!
Abigail says
Every time y’all crossed through into a new state, I wanted y’all to roar!
When I was little, my grandfather always called it the state LION instead of the state line so it was obligatory that we roar–and I somehow forgot that the rest of the world doesn’t do that too!
But I totally recommend roaring the next time you go through a state LION–I have a feeling Burger would like it too.
Laura says
Great video, thanks for documenting your roadtrip — it was much comfier to watch from my desk than to sit in the car for 40+ hours! :) Do you guys use the WordPress app for the iPhone, or something else?
Jen Z. says
What a great video. Thanks for taking us along your trip. Can’t wait to see your other videos and pictures from your trip. And love your great find at Pottery Barn Outlet. ;-)
Coco says
haha, my favorite part was the Georgia peach song and the arrow. Fabulous!
Wendy says
Holy friggin cuteness! Love, love, love the hair down Sherry and John’s pretty cute rockin the stubble. You guys need to teach us how you put together these crazy creative videos – love them!
Katie says
Love your video guys…especially the part where I maul Sherry with my booger wipes :) I can’t imagine how much work it took to edit that thing! Can’t wait to see the white charger station in action :)
XO – KayBee
YoungHouseLove says
Aww Katie B we miss you mucho! John and I laughed for about ten minutes watching the bad takes of you itching your nose. The best was you saying “you can’t even see it- nobody will notice” while it was totally obvious and funny. You don’t even know how hysterical you are. We were dying!
xo,

Amy @ Renovation Innovation says
Great video guys! I have to say that my favorite part was seeing Burger in action. He is such a cute and well-behaved dog! We have two chihuahuas – T-Rex is great at traveling (he will sit on your leg and peacefully go to sleep), but our newest chihuahua puppy, Arriba has too much energy to be quiet!
CarMaj says
Loved it! Thanks for sharing your awesome road trip!!
Sherry says
This summer I took part of the longest road trip I have ever been on. My husband and I drove from Tulsa, Oklahoma all the way to San Francisco, California. We had a good reason, which was my first nephew was just born and we went to visit him. I am not a HUGE fan of road trips but it was still fun. We tried to keep ourselves from being bored. Unfortunatly my husband was in the same position and I didn’t really drive much. Leave it to the man to drive and the women can keep them entertained.
Liz @ It's Great To Be Home says
Holy moly, that was awesome peeps! What a cute idea – and yay for Dallas!!!
Alicia says
We couldn’t believe we saw the Walhalla, SC sign…that’s where we live! The Gaffney peach is known as “the butt” to our family. ha ha.
I love your blog. Keep those ideas coming.
Kristi W says
It’s so funny that you didn’t see any North Dakota license plates. I grew up in ND, and when we tried to play the license plate game driving on road trips there, we wouldn’t see anything BUT North Dakota plates. Hence it wasn’t a very fun game. Haha. Cute video! I enjoyed it.
Courtenay says
You guys are too cute and the video was great. I have to say that I am a HUGE Burger fan! He’s adorable:-)
Amanda says
If a major TV network doesn’t pick you guys up in the next 6 months my head might just explode.
I wanted to be bored by this video. But I couldn’t. You guys are adorable. Even my 2 and 4 year old watched and danced along and copied all the poses John made.
PS Were all the still shots captured by the Flip as well?
YoungHouseLove says
Amanda, you’re too kind! And glad to hear we got the kiddos busting a move! The flip only does video, so the still photos were taken on our little Canon Powershot (which you can sort of see when when Sherry’s snapping that Hour #4 pic of me in Arkansas). Though a few of the Nashville ones were from Katie Bower’s fancy schmancy big camera, which is why they’re crazy amazing.
Christen L, we don’t mind sharing at all. We’ve been doing all of our video editing in iMovie 09. And we’ve been using http://www.creativecommons.org to search for free songs. You can use their search feature to access artists on Jamendo who make their music available for use, and most just ask that you give them credit. Hope that helps!
-John
christen L says
You guys are so creative! What a great way to record your travels!! :) If you don’t mind sharing, what program do you use to edit the videos? Also, where do you recommend looking to find great free songs? I have about 3 trip videos I need to edit. I foresee a fun little project in my future…
ps – Love the Pottery Barn score. Aren’t outlets the best!? Even more impressive, though, that John let you go in without him. My hubby would have tied our dog to a tree before he risked sending me in alone. ;)
kelly says
How do you track what states you have traveled to? Do you use a website or do you have a map at home?
I am looking to do the same thing!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kelly,
Besides our noggins, we’ve kept track of all the cities and states we’ve visited together on this vintage map that hangs above Sherry’s desk. We haven’t put our latest road trip pins in yet, but we’re planning to add one for each of the major cities we drove through – at least one in each state. We’ll be sure to share an updated pic of it once we’re done.
-John
Penney says
Love the video. Yall are too cute as usual. Thanks for bringing us along. Yall are on my list of blogs to check frequently. And believe me I do…
Jenny @ Words On Wendhurst says
We’ve never played the license plate game, but we do play the ABC game where you race to find all the letters in the alphabet. It’s great fun and a great time waster. :-)
Morgan says
You two are so freaking adorable it kills me!
Mandy says
Great video, too fun! Glad you enjoyed your stay in my current city – Nashville! When you are trying to figure out where you ate, if it was in Nashville then it was Rippy’s (bbq place on Broadway). : )
Torey says
How is it possible that you guys spend 41 hours in the car and still looked amazing? You both have the most incredible skin. Maybe you could start a beauty tips blog as well. :)
Christen L says
Thanks John! Btw, the Hotel Preston looked like it was super cool. How do you find great hotels that also allow animals?
Val says
The entire video was great, but I have to say that my favorite part was John with the 2 up, 2 down reppin’ the state. Hilarious!
And you’ve inspired me to start taking pictures on my own road trips. What a creative way to pass the time! :)
Dee says
You guys are the best blogginy blog bloggers in the blogosphere! Videos, photos, music and 9 posts published remotely! Talk about dedicated. And how do you keep looking so darn cute hour after hour for over 40 hours in a car?
Thanks for another peek into your life. You are a sweet, sweet couple, I mean trio.
Stephanie says
Okay, that was fun! I’m from Virginia but went to college in Texas, where I also happen to have lots of family. My husband’s from Atlanta, where he also still has lots of family. Since we live in Virginia now, we’ve made this exact drive many times. It’s lots more fun when it’s distilled into 15 minutes!
juliana says
I love the Hotel Preston — I stay there whenever I go to Nashville. It’s so wacky and fun. :)
Sheena says
Awesome video, guys! Makes me want to take a road trip!
Lisa says
This was so much fun! Thanks for publishing it. And just out of curiosity, where is that Pottery Barn outlet? We are headed to Atlanta to visit my husband’s extended family next month, and then to the Raleigh/Durham area around new year’s (basketball game at hubby’s alma mater, Duke)… so if I can sneak in a side trip to a PB (or Williams-Sonoma) outlet, I would be psyched!
Autumn says
I sooo want to go on a road trip with my husband! We’ve always wanted to and now I’m convinced more than ever that we should. Cuuuute video and looking forward to seeing more about that gorgeous wedding!
Kt says
hope y’all enjoyed Nashville! I didn’t realize your blogger friends lived here in town (I’m a NashVegas resident myself). In fact, I did the opposite drive on Friday & Sunday by driving home to VA & back this weekend! I40 is soooooo long, maybe I should try the video thing to keep me occupied.
Lisa says
P.S. The lacquer charging station you got for $19.99 is still on the PB Web site for $34.99!!
Mary Beth (Cats, Books, Life is Good) says
That was so much fun to watch – I’m all set to go out and get a flip video camera of my own. Thanks so much for sharing it with us:)
Jeannine @ Small & Chic says
What a great video! I have to echo the comment about the editing. I love iMovie, but I know how long it can take to edit something so long. The result is fantastic!
Our big road trip of the year is always around Christmas, when we go to Hampton for a birthday and Christmas #1, then spend two days in NYC, then two days in NJ (Christmas #2), then two day in DC before getting back home to Charlottesville. At some point, we may add Asheville and Boston to the loop. It’ll be crazy, but it’ll be a lot of fun!
We always travel with our dog, too (I travel for work and miss him too much to leave him behind any other time that I’m on the road). We have fallen in love with Kimpton hotels as a result because they have beautiful interiors (I thought your Nashville hotel was a Kimpton for a second) and they aren’t just dog friendly, they are dog fanatics!
Maybe we’ll have to take some videos of our next road trip. All I have are pictures. :)
