Like every good bedroom, our now office/playroom/guest bedroom has a closet. In fact, it’s the one I used to keep all of my clothes in before we installed the built-in wardrobes in the bedroom and I earned a spot to keep clothes in the same room that I slept in (upgrade!).
But what was once my closet, and later became a bonus storage space (full of nothing but Burger’s crate) has recently turned into this:
The reason for its current state can best be described as (1) it’s now required to hold a lot more stuff and (2) it’s not doing a very good job of it. Besides being a catch-all for miscellaneous items like winter coats and extra books, its main two functions were actually to still house Burger’s chihuahua sized dog crate and to contain all of the bedding for the fold-out guest bed hidden in the sleeper sofa (that stuff used to reside on the guest bed itself, thereby freeing up a lot more of the closet). And those two functions were constantly at war because every time we traveled with Burger’s crate, we’d slide it out and the pile of linens would fall to the floor and progressively get shoved back on top of his crate when we returned (less and less tidily each time). I know, excuses excuses…
But since that closet door actually remains open most of the time, except when we have guests in there (Burger loves chilling in his crate) we knew that it was time to conquer the mess. And the first step was to create a shelf to keep the linens from toppling every time we slipped the dog create in and out. So first we cleared out most of the mess and then it was solution time.
Inspired by the lower shelf that had once been in that closet before (see the white board on the left wall of the closet above?), we decided we just wanted to build a simple system with two rails on either side of the closet that would support a large plank of wood. So off to Home Depot we went, where we picked up one 1 x 2 and two 1 x 8 planks, all of which I had cut to size at Home Depot.
The two 1 x 8s would sit side-by-side to create a 16″ shelf while resting on the 1 x 2 side rails that I would install. Plus I cut an extra 1 x 2 for the back wall, just in case I needed a little more shelf support (I didn’t end up needing it though – hooray for spare wood).
Then, with Burger’s crate still in the closet, I measured the height of my shelf – leaving a bit of breathing room. Note: Burger’s crate is taller than 12 inches, I was measuring from the top of the baseboards in the picture below. I know he’s small, but he’s not that small.
Then after making the level marks along the two sidewalls I position my rails and screwed them each in, using three screws per rail. I didn’t do anything particularly heavy duty with the screws since it’s not going to hold very heavy items (although one on each side definitely went into a stud) but if you’re doing this to hold books or gold bricks, be sure to find a few more studs or use anchors. Once each side was attached I set my planks on top of the newly installed rails and made sure everything looked level. Luckily it did.
You’ll see my rail is a bit longer than the plank. I did this just to have some wiggle room if I needed it (we could always grab a 1 x 3 and lay it across to further extend the shelf to the edge of the ledge). You’ll also notice that the shelf isn’t as deep as the closet itself. That’s because the pipe for our radon mitigation system runs up the other side of the closet wall (see the white tube on the left in the photo below, which emerges from the floor and looks a lot like molding from that angle). This large plastic pipe prevents me from making the left rail any deeper. I could’ve tried to cut the shelf around the pipe in that corner, but it honestly wasn’t important enough for me to bother.
Oh, and of course I double checked to make sure Burger’s crate actually fit under it:
Next came painting. As you’ve probably noticed in the before pictures above, the closet walls were less than pristine themselves, so I took this as an opportunity to not only paint the shelf semi-gloss white, but to actually put a fresh coat on the whole closet, hanging bar, and the back of the door. That was probably the most time intensive part of this whole process (we used Freshaire off-the-shelf white semi-gloss paint since it’s no-VOC for the beanette).
With the whole space “freshened up” it was time to put everything back in and call this project complete. Well… not everything.
We were able to pare down the guest bedroom linens by just storing the sheets on the mattress, folded up in the sofa bed and only keeping two pillows in this closet (the other two – in case our guests need extra – now live atop Sherry’s wardrobe in our bedroom). Then we were finally able to store the remaining bed-stuff a bit more stylishly on the newly constructed shelf to make the whole area look more appealing. So much better, right?
Of course, the best part of the set-up is that we can now easily remove Burger’s crate to travel without all the guest bedding tumbling down into a heap. Don’t you just love some order in the court closet?
We also cut down on the number of hanging items. All unused/old winter coats and bags got donated and the remaining few coats/jackets were moved into my bedroom wardrobe since I was able to open up some space by ditching some past-their-prime work shirts. What we’re left with is a lot of free space for guests to hang their clothes up when they arrive (and two bags that Sherry decided to keep on hand- which actually look kind of sweet in the closet, thankfully).
We also straightened things up top a bit while we were at it. We pulled out a few good reads to donate to our local book store, wrangled the scarves and gloves that had been crawling out of the basket and wrapped up some spare surge protectors (tip: keep extension cords and surge protectors from coming unraveled by wrapping the wire and then plugging them into themselves to keep them tightly bundled). Oh, and then there’s Sherry’s stack of mailing envelopes for YHL shop orders.
The last update to the closet was more of a fun one. Stacy at Name Your Design had recently sent Clara this personalized growth chart as a baby gift, so we thought the inside of this closet door was the perfect spot to hang it. And we broke out a whimsical ceramic pig hook (purchased locally at Mongrel for $5) to do the job. You know how Sherry is about ceramic animals…
So all-in-all we’d say that we made our closet a much more pleasant space to look at and live with. Honestly, you have no idea how much we’re looking forward to being able to pull out Burger’s crate for our next road trip and not have pillows and blankets crash down on top of us.
Most importantly, Burger approves of the changes too. Phew. He can be a tough critic.
Have you guys done any closet wrangling recently? Or do you have any other tricks up your sleeve when it comes to storing linens or guest bedding? We realize our situation of linen closet/dog house is fairly unique, so throw in your closet uses (especially if they’re on the unusual side like ours).

Love the little pig hooks. And those fun pillowcases. Does Burger ever sleep in the crate at night or is he always with you guys?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jenny,
Burger still has sleepover parties with us every night, which we think helps to remind him how much we love him, even with a new baby around. He’s such a good big brother so we love snuggling him after a long day while Clara snoozes in the nearby nursery.

I want/need to bundle bedding together with pretty ribbon to keep like items together. I have my husband build shelves/cubes to store shoes and smaller baby items: http://ourhumbleabowed.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/closet-case/ The shoe storage is definitely great in our small entry closet.

Hi youngsters,
Based on your positive experience, my hubby and I recently purchased some FreshAire off-the-shelf semi-gloss to paint trim and doors in our home (I am with bun). My husband painted our basement door two weeks ago and was very unimpressed with the results. He said it took three coats to cover a medium beige door (without primer), and it still looks streaky. For comparison, our usual Glidden covered medium sage green trim in two coats flat. Have you had similar issues, or do you have any thoughts on why the coverage seems to be worse? Thanks! (And I love the closet! Organized spaces make my heart happy.)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Julie,
There’s no doubt about it: Freshaire paint is not as amazing as other paint with VOCs. But it’s worth the trade for us, especially when repainting things that are already white (like the trim around our house, the doors, the closets, etc). For those jobs it doesn’t take as many coats as it might over a color or over raw wood. Hope it helps!

My husband made shelves in our nursery and linen closets a couple of years ago. He put them up exactly how you did. They’ve been really sturdy and I’ve enjoyed have the extra storage. It’s a much better use of space than just having a bar to hang stuff!
Sherri says
This may be a way too personal question, but I know that John had suggested not having a TV in the bedroom because of the distraction and losing the intimate feel of the bedroom and I agree, but my husband feels that a dog would do the same..did you both agree on having burger sleep with you?
YoungHouseLove says
No way! Burger makes us feel close, like a true family. We’ve had him over four years and can’t imagine not sleeping with him. I think we’d be so lonely! Without getting into TMI territory, nobody but John and I are in the bedroom when it’s mommy & daddy time.

In our 1930’s colonial we are very limited with closet space..no coat closet or linen closet. We turned the closet in our extra bedroom into a linen closet with a freestanding wire shelving unit. Of course we made the mistake of putting it together and then trying to put it in the closet…not so fast!….wouldn’t fit…We had to take it apart and put it together in the closet. Worth it!

Sigh. I love a good organization before and after. We recently dolled up our tiny bedroom closets with some amazing Ikea closet organization inserts. It makes a world of difference! PS. Where’d you get the adorable multi-colored pillow covers? Too cute!

My question really has to do with nursery decor, not so much with closets. I did recently pay a local carpenter to install some custom closets in our 1960s ranch, which was money well spent! My husband is not much of a DIY-er, and being pregnant myself, I wasn’t about to tackle something of this magnitude. I have attached the URL to my little blog (which is mostly for family and friends who live out of town) showing our newly built closets. The yellow bedroom closet is to be the nursery for our new addition, a baby boy expected to arrive around November 3.
I fear I have made a huge mistake. I am finding myself trying to decorate around baby blue “ABC toile” purchased for a steal at Pottery Barn Outlet. The crib we have purchased is white and we are repainting a white wicker dresser to go in there as well. I have purchased a rug that has both greens and blues in it for the room, but I can’t seem to pick a paint color! I know that pale blue would be the safe route, but our bedroom is already blue. Even though I’m working with toile, it doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy, does it? Could I go with a pale green? I feel like this is a silly question to ask, esp since you cannot see what I am talking about. I am so indecisive!!!
I would love your input, if you have time. No worries if this is a seemingly absurd request!
YoungHouseLove says
Absolutely go with pale green! It’ll work amazingly well with everything else in there and feel fresh instead of too blue and matchy matchy! Good luck!

Thanks, Sherry. It makes me feel better that you’ve had the same experience and we’re not just doing something wrong. You’re right — when we freshened up an already white door, the results were much better. And I agree that it’s worth it to be able to paint and not worry about VOCs, both now and once our little one arrives. Thanks again!

Hi guys, love the update. We did something similar in our guest room. The closet is SUPER deep, so we put shelving up the entire back, and left room for the hanging rod at the front. Best storage ever. Extra linens, extra towels, craft storage, printer paper, envelopes.. all organized! We still have to paint ours! We did framing on all three walls, so the weight of the stuff on the shelves wouldn’t sag the shelf.
As far as what we do with other linens for the guest bed, we have a blanket folded up and laid across the foot of the bed. We also have a large wicker basket that houses two additional pillows, and extra blanket and any other linens a guest could want.

I always love a good closet organizing post! We just organized our office closet too – now that I’m storing inventory for my online vintage shop, we needed some extra space. Ryan had some snap-together wire shelves from his college days, so he built up four levels of shelves. They hold boxes of extra wires/tech stuff, all the bedlinens, our sleeping bags, my shop stuff, and pillows. Plus we added some S hooks on the sides (the wire is in a grid) to hold a bag of giftwrap & bows. The closet also holds Ryan’s snowboard, boots, and winter gear, an air mattress, and my packing materials! Wow, now I’ll have to take pictures to prove it doesn’t look like a total disaster! It’s actually pretty organized and isn’t TOO much bigger than your closet :)

very nice as always!
my initial thought was that this would be another door removal project. your closet is definitely cute enough to go doorless (unlike the closets in my house).
did you guys have to reposition the sleeper sofa to leave room for the closet door to open and close?
i love how you used the inside of the door for Clara’s growth chart.
YoungHouseLove says
Bridget B – We didn’t have to move the sleeper at all. When we first measured for it and put it in the room we made sure that it left enough room to open the door fully. There’s even about five inches to spare!
Elaine – We actually made the clothespins with some of the leftover scrapbook paper. We’ll be posting a photo how-to next week on BabyCenter so stay tuned!

Sarah B says
So I have to ask – is the growth chart at the correct height to match the numbers? Should we be watching for a future post relating to that? :)
YoungHouseLove says
Sarah B,
Oh yeah, the growth chart is hung correctly so that the heights are accurate. We didn’t really take pictures of that process, but basically I marked the door for 24″ inches (the lowest mark on the chart) after measuring from the ground up. Then Sherry held up the chart and shifted it until I made sure the mark on the door lined up with the mark on the chart. Then it was just a matter of marking where the hook should go and attaching it as precisely as possible.
And come to think of it, Clara’s about 24″ long right now so maybe we should be marking her first date on the chart!

You don’t make your dog sleep in a crate in the closet right?
YoungHouseLove says
Dave,
Burger is crated every time we leave the house (and spends a lot of his free time in there by his own choice with the door open) but never with the closet door closed. The door is usually only closed when guests are over and we’re trying to make the room more presentable, but of course Burger isn’t in the crate then. Hope that helps!

Anyone have good recommendations regarding shoe storage?
I used to have an IKEA PAX with deep deep shelves, and those didn’t work too well due to the deepness. I now live in a house with actual closets (JOY!) and I am a bit, just a bit, of a shoe freak (in “active” shoes I’ll probably have 10 pairs of sneakers, 10 pairs of dress shoes, a few “fancy” shoes, and a shoebox where I stuff in flipflops and chinese slippers upright). Plus my gf and I share a closet now, and she is a sneaker fetishist.
I looked at the various IKEA solutions, but I’m wondering the best options for using the depth of the closet without losing/being able to see shoes, as well as how to go vertical under our clothes. Angled racks? Towers of the cheap IKEA shoe stands?
Any and all ideas, or links, are very welcome.

Too funny…we are in the process of organizing our hall closet. Since we live in a 2 bedroom apartment, we don’t have a lot of storage space. We want to be able to fit our coats (unless I can transfer them to our bedroom closet). We also have tools, shop vac, and other hand held power tools…board games and a mish mosh of other items. I really like the idea of adding shelves.
Another thing we are looking for is a good way to store dvd’s & cd’s without taking up a bunch of space. Any good ideas for that?
YoungHouseLove says
Hi-D,
If you can bear to part with the DVD and CD cases, a great way to reduce the footprint of your collection is to organize them in binders. That’s where we keep all of ours and the entire collection fits in one storage ottoman!

Great post! I am planning to tackle my master closet, and being that we live in a flat, our only closet. Your transformation is inspiring. Thank you.

Another perfectly-timed post. I’ve been meaning to turn a little used closet with just a rod into a fully-shelved version for extra linens. Then, the former linen closet (which is right outside our bedroom) will get a rod and some of my husband’s clothes. He currently uses the guest bedroom closet, plus a huge armoire, plus a rod in the basement, plus a dresser. I think its time to intervene!
On a related note, I’ve now added “paint inside of closets” to my everygrowing to-do list. (Though it’s at the very bottom!)
Emily says
Super job! I’ve also been going through our guest room/office/”extra” bedroom and relocated the pillows. I haven’t decided where to put the extra winter coats year but they aren’t staying in that closet. My husband also built some similar shelves in another closet and I might ask him to build a few more in this closet, after I decide what the best use of the space is. Thanks for the inspiration!

i NEED to do closet makeovers, and the first thing i need to decide is what kind of doors to have in our two guest bedrooms. our closets are typical tract house 2 sliding doors, and i guess my only other options are a) no doors b)swing out doors c) bi-fold doors d) ??
i have been hoping you’d do a poll or something about them so i could get some ideas!

I know you’re not putting anything heavy on top of that shelf, but if you theoretically were, how much weight do you think something like that could hold?
You guys did a great job of cleaning it up, I always head over to Container Store (do you have one near you?) when I think about great organization bins or boxes for closet clean-ups. They’re stuff is on the more expensive side, but a lot of it is not only good quality and functional, but nice to look at too.
Can’t wait to check out your other post!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Laura,
We love The Container Store! Sadly it’s not near us. But whenever we’re up near Ikea we pay a visit to that store. As for the shelf, since we went through a stud on each side it could probably hold about 30lbs but that’s a pretty vague guess. If you hit more studs and used more anchors it would be stronger and could hold more. There are similar shelves in our house that were installed by a previous owner that hold tons of heavy books and photo albums. Hope it helps!

Kim at Yellow Brick Home says
Whoa. My jaw about dropped as I read John’s tutorial on how you guys built that low shelf!
Due to some unexpected flooding on our building’s basement storage units, the hubs and I decided to build our own storage shelves – a few feet off the ground since the flood line hit 3-whoping-feet down there. Phew! Our system that we came up with is literally IDENTICAL to what John did, albeit ours is a little stronger (2x4s instead of 1×2 and thick pine reinforced with said 2x4s) since it needs to support a LOT of weight.
It’s just crazy because we’re in the middle of writing a post about it on our blog. Unfortunately, our time line is not working as planned since we’re dealing with insurance adjustors and most recently, we found out that we need to re-drywall as well.

Great job on the closet organizing! I recently just cleaned up my closets too, and it feels so much better to open a closet when I know things won’t fall on top of me. On the topic of wierd closet uses, people find it quite wierd that my coat closet also houses a 3-drawer rolling cart full of office supplies and my printer…I don’t have a desk because I feel it’d take up unnecessary space in my small apartment, so the closet works for me.

Nice closet makeover!
I actually just installed a pet door on my hall closet for my cat. I never found a good place for her litter box… I didn’t want it in the kitchen, living room, dining room, or bedrooms… and there was not enough space in the bathroom for it. I had considered making some sort of storage bench (or hacking an existing one) with a door on the side for her, but I finally decided to put her box in the bottom of the closet and store everything else on higher shelves. Has turned out to be a great solution!
(For those worried that it might cause the closet to smell: I clean it out quite often to control odor – plus all I keep in that closet is extra bathroom TP and cleaning supplies)
Amber says
Great idea guys!
In college, my room had 2 smallish closets in it, so I used the slightly bigger one to store my clothes and built a desk into the other one (similar to your shelf). It worked out great because I could leave a mess in there and just shut the door!

This is an eerie parallel to my home-improvement too. This weekend I built a shelf in my closet to make a new “room” for my pup and her crate.
Of course, she’s substantially larger than Burger and my closet is irregularly triangular, so I had different challenges.
