Yes, it’s yet another rambling rug post. What can I say- our old hardwood floors give us splinters (remember this episode when I got one in the badonkadonk while painting?). And rugs are definitely great building blocks for a room – so we lean towards introducing them on the early end whenever possible. And after dragging the ol’ 5 x 8′ yellow rug back out from the guest room for Clara to play on until we got a more appropriate sized rug for large & in charge Karl the Sectional, we finally found something that made us excited enough to whip out our credit card. Yup, we ordered this amazingly textured & bright rug for our living room from The O (yes I mean Overstock – I try to support those strange marketing campaigns where brands like Radio Shack try to relabel themselves as The Shack).
It’s cushy and bold and happy-go-lucky and supersized (just like Big Karl). And it’s family friendly thanks to pure wool materials and the nice soft surface that it’ll create for crawling and sprawling out. The description actually cracks me up. Here’s part of it verbatim: “Trip out on pure, green hand-spun felted New Zealand wool.” Hilarious. We can’t wait to trip out on it. Plus the 5 star reviews about everything from how great the color is to how plush the shag texture is had me at hello (each tuft is apparently as thick as a crayon or a stalk of celery- yes please).
At $424.99 it’s not cheap. At all. At least by our standards. But most things that we hunted down in that large of a size (it’s 8 x 11′) in pure super-thick wool (which is always what we prefer in a casual used-all-the-time living room for reasons of softness, quality, and no nasty off-gassing) were usually in the $600-$1200 range. Like this similar shag from West Elm that’s smaller for $700. So something in the low 400’s with $2.95 shipping (can’t beat Overstock shipping) was actually pretty appealing. Especially since we recently sold our slipcovered sofa from our last living room on craigslist for $600. Our grand total for El Rug came to $427.95.
In the end we just didn’t want to spend $300 on a cheaper rug that we felt “meh” about instead of investing a bit more into something we’d – fingers crossed – love and use for a long time (the color seems like the perfect balance of brightness without being too light and stain-show-off-y). Plus we’re still embarrassingly giddy to have snagged an 8 x 10′ jute rug for the bedroom at under $250 so that sort of created a little imaginary rug credit towards this one in our heads. Psst- Weird. The O must have just raised the price. Here’s a link to the rug now on sale for $499.99, but you can see from our screengrab below that it was $424.99 when we ordered it.
Now for the cleaning plan. Because we’re so not into high maintenance rugs. A friend of mine with three kids and a (giant) dog has a similar shaggy wool rug and she swears it holds up to stains and kiddos like nobody’s business. Crumbs, dirt, and dust supposedly come out with a quick vacuum so that’s definitely doable. And apparently you can subtly trim the long hairy tufts to “lift” a stain if anything catastrophic – like grape juice – happens. And it’s seemingly impossible to detect because I’ve stared at hers in search of the trimmed parts and can’t ever find anything.
As for how we chose the size, we just used green painters tape to tape out the dimensions on the floor of our 25 x 15′ living room to make sure it worked (should’ve snapped a pic of that- boo). And as for the color choice, it just felt like our dark sectional, pewter walls, and gray beams needed a nice bright rug to take the room for Cold Gray City to a Warmer And More Fun City. But we didn’t want something too light that would show off every “oops” moment that’s sure to occur over the next decade plus (thanks to one baby, one dog, and dreams of at least one more wee one of the human kind in a few years).
Now before we get any further I must declare that we’ll probably forever miss our too-small-for-the-sectional Favorite Rug Ever In The History Of The Universe (our old Moorish Tile Rug from Pottery Barn). Gray and yellow is such a sweet combination. We looked for other yellow rugs but they all seemed too thin or too light (or too expensive, therefore too precious for use) and we feared they just wouldn’t hold up to all that impending abuse.
But Old Yeller isn’t dying or anything. Because I totally couldn’t take that. Seriously. I love that rug like family. It’ll just be found hanging out in the guest room where it’s much more appropriately sized (a 5 x 8′ rug paired with a giant sectional like Karl in a cavernous 25′ long room just isn’t the best solution). Anyway, we can’t wait to meet Señor Shag-o when he arrives. Overstock is famous for fast shipping so we hope to share pics in a jiffy (wow, even typing that made me feel like my mom, who also says things like neato and dungarees).
Anyway, now that we have our living room rug pinned down (which will tie into our $5 art) we can start thinking about curtains and lamps for the console table that we’re planning to build for behind Karl. Plenty of light & dark gray + bold color + lots of texture + some pattern sounds like a good time to us. Have you guys ordered from The O lately?
Emily says
Whatever happened to the Clara rug?
YoungHouseLove says
That’s in the playroom (which will someday be Clara’s big girl room when baby #2 comes in a few years). It’s also 5 x 8′ so it’s way too tiny for Big Karl.

Not sure about Overstock’s sales tax policy, but many online retailers do not charge sales tax on out-of-state sales (that is, out of the state the retailer is based in). However, in the Empire State, tax forms have a section where payers are expected to declare any online purchases they did not pay sales tax on.
I’m not sure how many New Yorkers actually fess up to that, but it’s on all the forms.
YoungHouseLove says
Wow. Who knew? Better ask the ol’ accountant if that’s true in VA. Thanks!
xo,
s
Lindsey says
Same situation here in KS. Legally, you are supposed to pay use tax on any purchases you were not charged tax on when you file your taxes.
carole says
same here in OH, although we are the only one we know of who actually does this! we look at our end-of-the-year credit card summary and add up the non-taxed items.
we just got a rug from overstock, too, it’s really nice, so I hope yours is as cute as it looks, too!

I think that if an online retailer doesn’t have a bricks-and-mortar store anywhere then they are not required to charge sales tax (ever notice that you pay no sales tax on amazon?). However, in most states the purchaser is supposed to declare these purchases and pay the sales tax then. Most people do not pay the sales tax come tax time so states really want to force the online retailers to charge it at time of purchase.
lisa says
yep, it is called “use tax” that people are required to put on their taxes if they didn’t pay sales tax at the time on online purchases.
MS says
Totally how it works here in Ohio as well. We are supposed to claim any unpaid sales tax on internet purchases each year. My understanding is that the company selling doesn’t want to file sales tax in all 50 states, so they just file where they are based and push the responsibility onto the consumers.
I’m also not sure how many Ohioans actually fess up.
Cordia says
Whaaat?? Leave it to Ny to try to get every penny out of ya! I didnt know that and I have ordered things online (some recent chairs) that I dont think I was charged tax for and I live in NY. Forget that. I’ve never seen it and I am just playing dumb then,ha! We pay enough for high gas, utilities, and other taxes!
Anastasia says
This is the first thing I thought of when I read that you didn’t pay sales tax. The additional tax is called Use Tax, and individuals are expected to report all purchases made where the seller did not collect and remit sales tax and pay the sales tax themselves (most often on internet purchases). Some states are now trying to force companies to give up a list of their customers so that the state can go after individuals themselves. The courts will end up deciding if companies have to give up the information.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, turns out John knew all along and has been turning in an untaxed merch total for our accountant every year. Whew. This is probably why I don’t get near our tax stuff. Haha. I’m clueless!

Liz says
Sooooooooooooooooo glad I live in Oregon where we don’t have a sale’s tax!
Becky says
NYS has it built in to their return that you automatically claim a certain amount (I want to say like $22 or something equally random). You have to physically opt-out by checking a clearly defined box that says “I made no such purchases” or something… which clearly is a red-flag for an audit. You also have the option of itemizing your purchases and therefore posting a different amount than the default. Not an accountant, just lived in NYS too long ;-)
Lynn says
I have ordered three rugs now from Overstock and have been happy with them all. I only buy ones that have reviews since the difference in real life with color and quality can vary so much. I ordered one jute rug that upon receiving it wasnt quite what I wanted, and had to return it….THATS where they getcha!!! It cost me ALOT to return it…so now I really really scrutinize knowing that cheap shipping may bite me if I have to return it! I cant wait to see the new rug under Karl!
Katie says
Yes! The return fees are what will be outrageous if your item is a bit bulky. I ordered five bamboo blinds and when I got them, the color was not what I was expecting. I went onto overstock.com and did an online chat with an associate. The return shipping fees were going to cost almost $40!! Which was half of what I spend on the blinds themselves. The associate offered to waive the return shipping as a one-time courtesy. So I was able to return them for free! But from now on, if I order anything from Overstock, I always take into consideration how much it will cost to return it if I don’t like it.
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve definitely heard that about returns! We just figured that with all those good reviews and with taping off the size on the floor that we don’t expect to return it. But anything big/bulky that we’re on the fence about from Overstock never gets ordered because of the hefty return fee you mention! We were just 100% sold on this guy. Fingers crossed…

The console we’re planning to build will actually run along his back (between the back wall and the longest part of the sectional). That way we have a place to reach back and place a glass or turn on a light to read.

I just ordered from Overstock, and I could not be happier. My husband and I ordered a storage bench (like the one you currently have in your master bedroom) for under our bay window in our front room, and the quality is fantastic. We had our eye on it for a long time, but we held out until we got a 10% off coupon via an Overstock email. Maybe hold out for that.
We recently bought a rug from Home Depot, and we are pleased. Secret (or no so secret money saver tip): before we buy something at Home Depot, we register with them to say we are “moving” (http://www.homedepotmoving.com/)to get a 10% off coupon. So far, we have used just about every family member’s address, so we can get our coupon.
Anyway, I am loving reading about your new home – it looks fabulous!

How did you get a 10% off coupon from Overstock? There is a light fixture I want to purchase for our bathroom remodel and I’d love to have a coupon!

Katie, I don’t know of a 10% off coupon, but try this link out: http://www.overstock.com/coupons If the light fixture is more than $150 than you save at least a little! Beautiful rug!
I wouldn’t know about sales tax since I live in fabulous, tax-free Delaware!
I love your new rug and I’m a fan of shag, but I haven’t had good experiences with it. Our (well-trained) Pomeranian and Papillon destroyed our shag rug because they repeatedly mistaked it for grass and “marked” on it. We also have shag bath mats and I have to keep the bathroom doors closed all the time because for some reason our dogs love to mark on those rugs and nowhere else. I’m sure Burger is a well-trained pup, though. It killed me to roll up our shag rug after just 6 months and throw it away.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no! Thankfully Burger is really good about only going “potty” outside (we’ve had furry faux sheepskins and thick shaggy bathmats for years – even one that’s green) and he hasn’t tried to make anything. As for your guys, could it be that one of them marks things and then the other one tries to mark “over” it? Creating a battle of puppy wills? Good luck!

Hi guys! The rug looks great! I kinda m in love with shag…guilty pleasure! I want to ask you, as I have an absurdly large sectional as well (it never had an official “store” name, and oddly enough we enjoy naming out furniture/cars/house as well, so we dubbed this one Marge…i’m sure you get it). How did you decide how large the rug should be? I know you said you taped it off…but is there a rule of thumb on how much it should sit under the sofa….how far it should go out into the room…etc, etc, etc. Also, whats your opinion on rug on carpet? I always hear its a no-no…but our living room needs a lift and we can’t afford to do hardwood right now. I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice! Thank you!
YoungHouseLove says
We love area rugs on wall to wall carpet. They definitely add dimension and help to define a seating area and all that good stuff. As for the size, we knew a 5 x 8′ was way too small, so we just taped off an 8 x 10′ and an 8 x 11′ and a 9 x 12′ (some of the more standard larger sizes) and realized that 8 x 11′ visually just made the most sense, so we favored that size. Hope it helps!
xo,
s
Martha says
Fun! That’ll be a nice bright contrast to the sectional. Plus, that’s a seriously good deal. We just had to get an 8’x10′ for our living room, and I was shocked how much rugs are. It’s like diamonds – the bigger they are, the more exponentially expensive they become.
Farrah says
What kind of vacuum do you all have? We have Dyson Animal, and while I dig the look of this rug, I’m afraid that the Dyson would just annihilate it, despite what you said about your friend’s. Would love a “usability” update once you’ve had the rug awhile!
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s the vacuum we have: https://www.younghouselove.com/this-vacuum-sucks-part-two/
It has settings for carpet and hardwood (that one pulls less) so just to be safe we’ll start on a lower setting to see how it goes. Lots of people said it was easy to vacuum and care for in their reviews (no issues with pulling or unwinding, which is awesome). But we’ll definitely share a “how it’s going now” update a few months into ownership!

I love the new on-way- rug! Terrific color. I was curious about Old Yeller though–in some pictures it looks kind of dirty in spots. Maybe it’s not–and it just seems that way :) But I was wondering if you’ve had much experience cleaning rugs and how you’ve done it.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh that’s just the way it photographs when the pile isn’t all going the same direction (I’m not quite Type A enough to vacuum the rug every time we shoot it so I figure it’s no biggie if some of the pile goes in different directions). The funny thing is that it only shows up that way in photos (in real life you can’t tell which way the pile is going at all. And it’s actually really clean after years of use – we just regularly vacuum and spot treat anything like ice cream (John once dumped an entire bowl upside down on the rug). It’s definitely a personal preference thing, but we think deep cleaning rug shampoo can be really stinky and doesn’t feel very green with a baby and a dog playing on it, so we like to avoid it! But 100% wool is actually a great material to keep clean by vacuuming and spot treating. Hope it helps!

I’m a huge fan of Overstock rugs– I have them in my bedroom, my kids’ room, and my den– but yes, returns are the problem as someone else said, and also the color description often isn’t quite right. It shouldn’t matter for this, since that rug gone greener or yellower should still work with watcha got goin on.
Also, I have the PB moorish tile rug in orange in my living room and feel almost as crazy about it as you guys! I remember carrying around oversize swatches of the orange and yellow to decide which I wanted for WEEKS because it was such an investment. Then I figured out I could get it with Amex points for free. Then it went on sale! Sometimes it pays to deliberate for a looooong time.

To further clarify, no sales tax unless the retailer has a brick and mortar located in the state you live in. Ballard Designs (although pricey at times) is my favorite place to get this discount. They don’t have a store in Texas so no sales tax for me!
Jordan says
But good to learn about the declaration thing…that’s a new one on me. I will have to research because I don’t think Texas requires you to declare.
Amanda says
pretty sure that TX does require it
http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxforms/01-156.pdf
Most states that have sales tax do require it. It is quite a bit of revenue for the states. This is why states have fought hard to force retailers to charge it but since state sales tax laws vary so much the courts have determined that it would be too big of a burden for the merchants to figure out sales tax for states they don’t have a presence in.

I agree with other comments–I loved the yellow/gray combo as well, BUT updating is so much fun…we’re all so familiar with the yellow rug, so it’ll be nice to see something just as awesome and just as bright and fun, for a nice refreshing look in your new living room.
I’ve always wanted to purchase something from the O–especially around Christmas time when they have the awesome tv commercials. Now I just might have to since they have a bangin’ shipping price…
can’t wait to see pics of the rug under Karl!

Thanks Lisa! Turns out John knew about this all along (he puts our taxes together- well along with our accountant). Good thing I wasn’t in charge of that stuff since I’m apparently clueless. Haha.

the $5 looks great above your sectional! The frames are not centered on the couch intentionally???
YoungHouseLove says
They’re centered on the ceiling beams since we’ll be moving the sofa a smidge once we build a console table for behind the sofa. Hope it helps!

oh this is so exciting!!! (also, I’m excited that the comment feature works again @ work! Last week I couldn’t comment at work. boo! this is my 10:00 work break pretty much every day.) But anywho, I actually was looking for a rug fromt the O last month and the one I loved was just too pricey for us so we went out to the PB Outlet in Gaffney and found one we LOVE (8×10) jute for $299.99! BUT, I have a questionfor you, we’ve had the rug for about 3 weeks now and it sits in living room with 2 sofas on the outter edges and a coffe table on the middle of it and we had people over this weekend and noticed it shifting. Do you think placing a rug mat under it will stop the shifting of the rug. it bunches inthe middle? Do you all typically do that under a large rug? Will you do that under the new green one? Thanks!!! :-D
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, a rug pad should help a lot! We’ll definitely add one if our giant sectional doesn’t hold things in place!

This is off topic but I just have to say….I LOVE the color blocks above the sofa. It makes such a stunning statement in its simplicity! I just realized that would make a great way to incorporate other accent colors into the house easily.
The living room looks great!

As a super general rule, would you recommend nailing down a Rug before Curtains? I am needing to replace the rug and curtains in my living room. Part of me wants to jump all of over the curtains, but I know that the rug may be the trickier, more expensive purchase. I can always make curtains to match the rug. Rug making seems far less likely. Thoughts?
YoungHouseLove says
I think it could work either way. They’re both big building blocks of a room, so I guess just start with whichever one you find that you love love love! Don’t settle for something ‘ok’ though, hold out for The One!

I’d say get the rug first. If you can’t find curtains that you like, then you can always “sew” them like Sherry has demonstrated. I think there are thousands of more different fabrics out there to pick from that you can get to match a rug than the other way around.

Ah! We always go to Overstock for rugs – although their return shipping can be upwards of $50 for something so large and heavy. Actually, I think their rug returns are a bit strange, and they’ve changed over the years, BUT we did just order this rug from the O:

Shag, like yours. Great minds think alike. AND we love that it was a 7′ square, which is what we’d needed for so long, but just couldn’t fathom spending the $500+ for a “unique” shape.
Love the texture in yours!

We have the West Elm rug in white (8’x10′) and have been trying to sell it (for $300). It has some light use (very light: it was in our guest room for less than a year), but we’ve been having the hardest time! Do you think the price is too high?
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm it doesn’t seem too high because of how much you paid, but maybe if potential purchasers are finding new rugs for $100 more on places like Overstock or rugsusa.com they might not want to shell out $300 for something used? Maybe try saying “$300 or best offer” in your ad? Or picking a date to lower the price (ex: if it doesn’t sell by April 1st, lower it to $250)? Good luck!

So pretty! Such a great looking rug, can’t wait to see it “in action”! I’ve never purchased anything from the O and sometimes even forge to check there….like the bedding I’m still on the hunt for (which I asked for suggestions for on you FB and got some good ones)!

Wool is magic. It is naturally anti microbial and junk… you might find that some stains disappear without even doing a thing. I have a white wool rug that my brother ahem got sick on and I thought it was ruined and rolled it up til I decided what to do. A few months later I unrolled it and the stain was faded considerably and after leaving it in my sun room for a bit til I got up the courage to try a steam cleaner (heat and wool can mean shrinkage) it faded EVEN MORE. The sun is magic too :D I did steam clean it which helped a tiny bit and its back in my living room. My daughter got some pizza sauce on it (not thick, just lightly) and it was gone by the next day before I had a chance to do a thing. yes, pizza sauce disappeared on my white wool rug.
Wool is just super super absorbent and it dries clean because of its magical properties so its a pretty perfect option for a house. Its also why its so popular as a diaper cover in the cloth diapering community. I personally don’t feel a night time diaper is complete without a wool cover even if the diaper already has PUL. Wool will absorb SO MUCH! Wool is basically my most favorite thing in the whole world… soft and magic :D
YoungHouseLove says
Yay wool! We wondered why our wool rugs held up so well, even in light colors like yellow! Totally makes sense. So excited to meet our shaggiest wool friend yet!

Im glad Kari above asked about how to show you guys photos that we may want to share because I have accent pillows in our office that are siblings to your rug! Same color, same texture. Got them from Home Goods along with a fabulous multi-colored floral and butterfly motif handmade wool rug from which I pulled gray and green as accent colors. I started with that glorious rug and the room grew from there. But I bet you are going to tell the reader above that inspriration for a room can come from anywhere! Even a napkin named Sue!

So true! Where would we be without Sue?

Oh and I forgot to add… you said you can’t beat overstock shipping but did you know you can get free two day shipping through amazon? If you guys sign up for amazon mom, you get free prime shipping (two day) on tons of stuff and not just baby stuff. the free prime shipping doesn’t last forever but the more you buy with prime (I think it only counts on baby things) the more time you get added to having it. I love getting things in two days without paying a bunch for the hurried shipping! Plus, if you ever need to use disposables instead of your cloth, you can get diapers really cheap with subscribe and save. I bought 4 packs of seventh gen for the price of just over one! It was amazing.
YoungHouseLove says
Wow- never knew that! Thanks for the tip!

Yes, love Amazon Mom! I’ve saved tons signing up for this. I buy Seventh Generation diapers too. I used my Amazon mom savings plus 2 coupons I found in magazines for Amazon diapers and have had diapers shipped to my door for less than $2 before!
Jessica Z. says
I’ll second Amazon Mom. I was just about to bite the bullet and sign up for Amazon Prime when a friend recommended Amazon Mom. It’s actually pretty amazing how quickly you can earn additional months of free Prime by buying stuff in their baby store, even for someone who cloth diapers and tries hard to go minimalist with baby gear! And I don’t know if you guys have switched over to cloth wipes yet, but you do get a discount on wipes as well as diapers. You have to give them some information like when your baby was born and the pets you have in your house, but I was okay with that since I’m not too paranoid about sharing info with them (they probably already know way too much about me based on my browsing history on the site!).
