Just as we mentioned last week, Reader Redesigns are back y’all!! And we’re kicking things off with Michelle’s amazing bathroom renovation. She and her husband David gutted the crazy yellow bathroom, completely reconfigured the layout, and built it back up in beautiful greys and fresh sparkling whites. Here’s her letter:
Hi Sherry & John! Your bathroom at your first house sparked me and my hubs to renovate our 1952 en-suite bathroom. We followed soooo many of your tips (we ran into all of the same demolition problems, including the wire mesh). It was no bueno! But thank goodness all of the hard work is done. I shared the big final reveal of the bathroom here on my blog Ten June, and you can also look back at the entire renovation here. Anyways, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your insight! So excited that Reader Redesigns have returned! -Michelle
Um, it’s insane. Seriously, it doesn’t even look like the same room. Just check out these before pics:
And now for the holy-cow-that’s-amazing afters:
Not only is that shower – ahem – double shower awesome because it sits where the toilet and bathtub formerly were, but it also has these killer hex tiles….
…which Michelle and David smartly echoed as details elsewhere in the shower.
Sherry and I may or may not have gone nuts over that tile. And everything from the soft gray vanity to the glittering angled mirrors have us in a gorgeous-bathroom-induced haze. As Michelle said, there are more before, during, and after pics on her blog: Ten June (namely, here and here). Thanks for sharing your awesome project with us Michelle!
Got your own awesome before & after project? Send your story, pics, and related links to [email protected] to be considered for a possible Reader Redesign feature. You know we love any and all design eye candy!

What a gorgeous bathroom.
Elizabeth says
Yay so glad these are back! LOVE the makeover! :)
Emily @ Comfortable Home Life says
Oh my gahhhh!! It looks like someone lost control of their urine in the ‘before’ picture. That shade of yellow is a no-no for a bathroom, IMHO!
nikki says
Love that hex tile too! Definitely on the dream bathroom list :)
Shelby DeLong says
AHHHHH This is amazeballs! I love it! I’m just now getting around to commenting on your blog, even though I’ve been reading it for probably a year. I love you guys. Keep up the awesome work!
Stephanie says
Am I the only one who got excited about the yellow tub and toilet combo? Our neighbors have something similar in purple, and I’m kind of jealous…why?!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, there’s definitely something fun/smile-inducing about it. Maybe not every morning and night though…

Girl I am right there with you.. one of my first apartments was all baby blue tile– my boyfriends sister’s bathroom is all pink & brown – i LOVE it.
Shaina says
So excited for the yellow toliet!! The first thing that came to mind when I saw the photo was, “wow- I’ve never seen a yellow toliet”.
Rebecca says
I’m going to have to email you pictures of my kitchen remodel once it complete (finally….)!

OMG…I am in love with gray lately and this bathroom nearly made me pee my pants out of excitement. Sorry for the overshare…lol. Nice work Michelle & David! :)

Ooh, fabulous!
Jess @ Little House. Big Heart. says
Wow! That’s amazing. The hubs and I are in the beginning stages of planning/saving for our 1940’s bathroom remodel (it looks almost exactly the same except for mint green tile instead of yellow)! We’ve been poring over your reno and now have Ten June’s to help too!
Love you’ve brought this feature back!
Rachel says
Wow! That is an amazing change! The tiles are gorgeous!!!
Liz says
Wow. Just wow. What a great refiguration of the space.
I can’t imagine how fun it must have been when their original vanity didn’t work out.
Kim S says
Wow, that is an amazing transformation!
Anna-Lisa says
Awwwww, the before was kind of cute. I love 1950s bathrooms. But I can definitely see why they didn’t want to live with that tile every day. And I love love love love love the after shower. I’ve always wanted two shower heads so neither side of me has to be cold. Haha. PINTERESTING THIS NOW.
Elizabeth says
Love the bathroom and love that Reader Redesign is back! Happy Blogiversary, btw!!
Melissa says
Oh my gosh, this is incredible. I have a serious gray obsession. Amazing!
Amy says
So glad you brought these back. Love the huge shower.
miriam says
Oh, that’s gorgeous! Two sinks AND two shower heads… I would be in heaven! I love the unexpected shapes, like the hex tiles and the oval mirrors, and the soothing white and gray color scheme. This one is going in my someday-when-we-own-a-place file for sure!
And thanks for bringing back the reader redesigns! I love when you guys get into the down-and-dirty details of DIY but the instant gratification of a before and after is a nice change of pace :-)
Sugar Cookie says
Ha, this update was posted by Sherry, but later says, “Sherry and I may or may not have gone nuts over that tile.” I guess you guys did some collaborative writing work? Or was Sherry talking in third (and first) person? ;)
YoungHouseLove says
Sorry! Wrong tag on the post! The default is Sherry but this was all John. Just fixed it for him!

WOAH. The grey and white are lovely together and the little splash of pink goes perfectly.
Our hall bath was a nightmare… pink, peach, and mint colored tiles with yellow-y brown linoleum stick on tiles and a cream counter with GOLD GLITTER speckled throughout. Gross.

I’ve seen this makeover before and it still makes me drool!
Assorted Annie says
I’ve already pinned their vanity picture from somewhere else! I have LOTS of yellow tile bathroom issues at my house. Now I’m extra motivated to fix them!
Grazielle says
OMG!! Super duper jealous.. I have a 1950’s pink bathroom right now and am itching to tear it apart and renovate unfortunately my piggy bank is kinda empty right now. I love all the choices in tiles, colors and the layout. Great job !
Liz says
Love that bathroom! I’m kinda obsessed with carrara marble.
Briel K. says
Wow, that looks gorgeous! I love the insets in the shower with the tile background.
Rachael says
Wow! That is beautiful! Both of the bathrooms in my house need some MAJOR help! What a great inspiration!
Allison Jo says
Wow this looks great! This does remind me of a remodeling quesiton I have…Last year you posted this mood board http://moodboards.younghouselove.com/2010/09/bedroom-va-va-voom/ and I absolutely loved it! I ordered the headboard and the chandeliers. Then I went to order the bedding. Unfortunately they only had king size left. I have been looking for bedding to go with my headboard and chandeliers ever since and I just can’t seem to find anything that I like as much as that west elm bedding. Do you have any suggestions? This has been driving me nuts! I want it to be romantic and pretty like the mood board, but I can’t seem to find anything. I’m also wondering if anyone else ran into the same problem. If you have any ideas off the top of your head, please let me know. I’d love to finally get the bedroom I’ve always wanted!! Thanks so much (love your blog!)
Allison
YoungHouseLove says
Oh I loved that board! And I’d love to see how your room turns out! As for bedding, maybe try this? http://www.westelm.com/products/organic-painted-swirl-duvet-shams-b676/?pkey=call-bedding Or something white and fluffy with some soft plummy pillows? Good luck!

comes in gray OR a really pretty deep plum/purple. Okay, I will stop shopping for you now haha.

That really is a “holy-cow-that’s-amazing” set of after pictures. Having done several bathrooms I know how hard they are.
Angel Y. says
I love the gray! You don’t see many gray bathrooms but this is gorgeous. Good job!
Jennifer L says
A little sad to see the yellow go. Or at least the tile/tub could have been salvaged for someone wanting to restore. We have a ’56 pink bathroom and we’re embracing it & holding on until the floor cracks beyond reasonability. Just a tease : http://www.flickr.com/photos/neatlysliced/5856544685/

Jennifer L says
Of course the transformation is gorgeous and I’m drooling. We decorate our atomic ranch in mod 50s so pink makes more sense in my house. And pink/black is a bit more appealing than yellow… on yellow.. with more yellow!
Gorgeous shower too! Love!
Jessica says
Holy amazeballs!
Rachel says
Whoa! I cannot believe that’s the same room! Amazing! Love all their choices of stone and tile!
Ashley says
OMG! I love the yellow tile! I am so sad they got rid of it.
I do like what they did, but for some reason retro tiles just makes me so so happy.
SingleMama says
That looks great! Silly question…where is the toilet now?
YoungHouseLove says
Good question! I think if you click over to their blog you can see where it lives now!

Totally wondered the same thing, then I thought, hey, maybe a bathroom this gorgeous makes you forget you even had to go when you walked in….
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I love it. A bathroom not meant for using the bathroom. It’s just too beautiful. I bet someone has something like that! Maybe Cher? Or Prince?

Fabulous!
Lee says
Oh I am SOOOOO stealing that shower stall idea!!! We’re in a tiny ranch with one bathroom. I don’t care anything about resale value right now–I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of having a clean, new walk in shower!!! This is a keeper!!!
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
I love the way this turned out. The color of the vanity is amazing and I love those hex tiles!
Lauren says
That bathroom is gorgeous. I am seriously obsessed with the gray vanity.
We have double shower heads in our master bath which I thought was totally awesome but I feel too guilty about wasting water to ever use both of them at once. So now I just resent the second shower head and give it evil looks from the other side of the shower every morning.
Jeanne says
Love that bathroom! My husband and I are in the process of deciding what we want to do in our master bathroom for our reno this winter and I’m definitely loving those hex tiles. Thanks for the idea and sharing the pics!!
Carla says
That’s definitely a radical change. I love the soft gray paint on the vanity. But honestly I think the entire space is very washed out and way too monotone and flat. Also, I’m wondering how it will connect with the rest of the house. It seems ultra modern, and, as lovely as it is, more appropriate for a hotel than a home.
Erika says
Gorgeous!
Kristiina says
I’ve missed the reader redesigns—thrilled that they’re back! woohoo :) also: nice tiles!
Lauryn says
First- SO GLAD Reader Redesigns are back!! Makes the blog feel like were all in on something together! And Michelle!! That bathroom looks gorgeous! I love how light, and airy it is! Lovely.
Erica says
Love the reader redesign. So glad it’s back. This on is amazing. I’d like to see what she did with towels and the shower curtain though…
Stasi says
Did they relocate the toilet and it just didn’t get photographed or did they do away with it altogether?
YoungHouseLove says
I think if you click over to their blog you can see where the toilet lives now! Hope it helps!
xo,

Jennifer L says
I thought the same thing… they’ve moved it to the wall opposite the shower. Absolutely brilliant placement.
Michelle @ Ten June says
Thanks so much for the feature John & Sherry! And the sweet words from all of your readers, you guys are the bestest.
For those who asked- the toilet is now on the other side of the room (which is actually a rectangle- shower on one end, vanity, toilet area). We built in a pocket door wall so that we have a little private area for the john. Right John? Ha, sorry, had to. You can check out our little water closet (including our how-to-install-a-pocket-door spiel) in the links from the post!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, right. I’m an expert on all things John.
Thanks again for sharing your makeover!
