Before getting to the Reader Redesign goods, we have a quick Burger-related story. Yesterday was a very scary day for us. Burger was sitting on Sherry’s lap and Clara and I came home and Burger was so excited to see us that he jumped off her lap (as he’s done a million times before) and somehow lost his balance and flipped in the air and landed on the floor on his back and neck. He yelped and Sherry scooped him up to see if he was ok but he shook his head and acted fine. So we put him on the floor but he couldn’t walk. He had no balance and walked into the walls and wouldn’t put weight on either of his hind legs and kept falling over.
While rushing to get everyone in the car to get him to the vet, Sherry called them to tell them we were coming and while she was on the phone Burger had what we think was a small seizure (he was very rigid and his eyes were open but he wasn’t focusing on anything and he was shaking violently). It stopped after about twenty seconds and by the time we got to the vet he was acting completely normal. He could walk and all of his vitals checked out. They think the stumbling and loss of balance along with the possible seizure was from the shock of the impact but he restored all function and checked out all of their many tests so we’re just so thankful he’s ok. They said we had to watch him for the next 24 hours for any signs that something’s off, and we’re still a few hours shy of that mark but he’s acting just like his old self and is jumping and running around (as hyper as ever, haha). Whew. He scared the heck out of us, but we’re all so thankful he’s ok.
But back to the reader redesign! Now that we’re shifting from kitchen to bathroom brain, it should come as no surprise that we’re gravitating towards the bathroom makeovers popping up in our inbox these day. And we’re especially charmed by ones like Michelle’s – because it (like ours) isn’t a total gut job. Instead, it’s just a few manageable updates that go a long way. And for Michelle, those big impact changes are paint, pattern, and molding (I was this close to an alliteration there). Check out her note below.
As fellow stenciling survivors, I thought you might enjoy our powder room make-over!
We added some moldings and used the Nova Trellis stencil from Royal Design studios to transform our boring powder room into a quirky new space!
The white is Ultra White by Valspar. The black is Black Leather by Dutch Boy.
We still need to add crown molding and wall art. I might also switch out the mirror and window treatment. This room is a little bolder than my usual conservative style but I’m digging it! – Michelle
We are too, Michelle. Thanks for sending the pictures our way. We love a bold pattern in a small space like a bathroom (rooms like that will never look giant anyway, so embracing them and turning them into something special is such a great call). It really wakes up the room in a nice way. And the molding and trim adds tons of style too. To read more about this project, visit Michelle’s blog. But first let’s hear what you like best. Is it the crisp white molding? The rich wood floors? The pedestal sink? Or the brave stencil job?

I am soooo glad to hear that Burger is okay. I hope he is on the mend.
P.S. That bathroom is perfection.

Poor Burger :( Glad to hear he’s okay! LOVE the powder room makeover!

So glad to hear the Burger-meister is o.k. Scary!!
Love the bathroom. I wish I had the patience for stenciling, but I just may have to try it on a really small scale first.
Steph says
That Burger story made me tear up :( SO SO glad he’s okay! How scary for you guys, I’m so thankful that story had a happy ending!
I’m so in love with those walls! I would have never thought to do something like that, but it looks awesome!
Amber says
Poor Burger. I’m glad to hear that he seems to be acting normal.
emily @ go haus go says
Oh no! Poor Burger! I have a chihuahua too (Biggie) who experienced the same thing. He was playing on the bed and lost his balance. Seemed fine but had a seizure a few seconds later. Very, very scary. I cried! But as with Burger, he was back to 100% within the hour. Maybe it’s a chihuahua thing?
YoungHouseLove says
No way- so good to know Biggie was ok too!

Give Burger a cuddle and a treat for us! Those are such frightening moments when our furry family members are hurting! So happy the little guy’s back to his normal self. :)
kena says
The molding does add a little something special. That said, I actually I like the before better.
Ami says
I agree.
Krista says
I agree. It looks a little too much like something out of Clockwork Orange now, which doesn’t play well with the rich floors. If I were them I would have kept the green, and done the same stencil only in the sink area with a light gold paint. I do really like the moulding though!
Hannah says
Sad to say I agree to … something about the stenciling looks too … pixelated? Or something. To each his own!
Ellen says
So glad Burger was ok! We had a similar scare. Our dog jumped out of our second story window!! That drive to the vet can be so scary when you don’t know what could possibly be wrong. Thankfully, like Burger, she was ok.

Glad to hear Burger is okay! It is scary when pets are hurt… they can’t tell you what the problem is!
Also, love the stencil in that bathroom… one of my home goals this year is to use a stencil somewhere. Our powder room might be a good choice!
Mel Heth says
Yikes! I’m so glad Burger is okay! It’s so scary when stuff like that happens to our furry friends because they can’t tell us what’s wrong.
Kathy says
We have a 7 year toy poodle (Molly) on daily medication to prevent seizures. Seizures are so hard to watch and is usually took her about 12 hours to completely recover from one. No idea what caused them she had a few as a puppy but they got worse and more frequent as she got older. She is a different dog now with a much better appetite and energy. If he does have another one just put him in a soft place so he can’t hurt himself. Watch your fingers…they can clamp down on one and literally can’t let go until the seizure is over. Hope it was a one time thing.
Love your blog!! Thanks for all the tips!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no, that’s so scary! Burger sends Molly his love!

That is so scary! I once had to rush to the vet with my dog, and it was one of the scariest feelings in the world. I’m not a crier but tears were flowing. Glad to hear he is ok!

OMG! Good to hear Burger is OK. Love, love, love your bathroom as well as the reader redesign bathroom. I’m in the mood to redo our master bath and am still in the “let’s see, what about this” stage.

That story made my heart drop! So so so so so glad he is okay!!! I think he deserves a steak dinner tonight after all of that stress ;o)
Anyway, love the pattern in the powder room! The black and white is totally fun!

Oh no! My 9 yr old shitzu, Beaugart has had 2 seizures that were a little bit more vocal. But, he hasn’t had another one in almost a year. I’ve heard that it can just “happen” with the little guys. Glad to know sweet Burger is ok!

Poor Burger! Those are seriously scary moments. You guys must have been freak-ing out – glad to here his back to himself so far! These are the moments when I wish our animals could talk to us and tell us how they’re feeling/what’s wrong. Hugs and lots of petting to Burger.

So glad to hear Burger is doing okay!

So glad Burger is OK. We had a similar scary situation a few years ago with our dog. We got home, let her out of her crate, she was so excited to see us that she tried jumping onto the bed, but she missed. She didn’t seem bothered, so we thought she was OK at the time, it wasn’t until later that night when she started getting wobbly, my boyfriend joked that she was “dancing” when she was swaying back and forth, but we could tell something was wrong. We rushed her to the emergency vet (was late at night) and they kept her over night. She is a Pug and they are known for “Pug dog encephalitis”, which is swelling of the brain and they can have seizures and eventually end up dying because of it. HARD NEWS to take, but she was never actually diagnosed with it and we got to pick her up and take her home after 48 hours, we actually got her back on my bf’s birthday. Best. Gift. Ever. She’s been fine ever since, hasn’t had anymore issues (knock on wood), but it’s scary not being able to know where it hurts or what’s ailing our “fur babies”. She sends her love to Burger <3
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no, so glad your fur baby was ok!

The reader redesign looks great, but honestly, I’ll have to go back and reread that … after the Burger incident I really couldn’t focus. So glad to hear that he appears OK and I know you are watching the clock closely. Our 14 yr old pup, Beaver, also has seizures and they too started the first time from what appeared to be a clumsy accident. It’s amazing how quickly dogs can “reset” their system after a seizure and the vet has told me – and I believe it, that the seizure is worse for us watching than for the pup to experience. I’m sure you were scared crazy. The other thing we noticed is Beaver’s seizures come in clusters … over a couple of weeks to months he’ll have a few, then nothing for a long time, then they’re back. Hope this is the only one for Burger but I thought I’d share that info just in case.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh poor Beaver! Burger sends him lots of love!

Much love to the burger clan! :( No good. We put our senior lab down after she started seizing at camp in 2007 in the middle of the night and was still seizing more frequently the next morning. I let her eat whatever she wanted and we had to drive 15 miles down through the woods on logging roads, and then another hour 1/2 to the nearest emergency vets. We had to stop and pull her out of the truck once and pin her on the ground because we were all in a single cab truck (the two of us and two dogs) so she wouldn’t accidentally clamp on us or our puppy. Then we almost slammed into a momma moose and her baby. We got to the vets and had to euthanize her. It was one of the most traumatic things I had ever done. Weird story though – we knew she was getting on with age, and the week before that she almost drowned in the lake swimming and my husband had to jump in full clothes, wallet, everything to get her out. That’s when we realized she had nerve damage. I was going away for work and I looked at her and told her to hang on while I was gone because I wanted to be there for her. She died the weekend after I got back.
We watched Marley and Me like 6 months later and I was a mess because in the movie he’s on a walk and says “You let me know when you’re ready to go” and I had said the same thing to her while walking with her one day not long before she died.
It’s still wicked sad to think about and hands down one of the worst days of my life (she was my first dog – even though my husbands mom had her and we only had her at our house for about 8 months, I had known her for years and years). We had to let our puppy see her after being euthanized and she tried to play with her and then she realized it, laid down face to face and touched noses and licked her and pressed her face to the ground. It was about a month before she was herself again, and she didn’t come fully around until we got Primrose about 4 months later. Now I have two labs only 6 months apart. I can’t even think about “down the line”.
heather says
(we look back now and realize she had been seizing in the night for at least a month, but she slept downstairs and a few times around 4am she would be whine/barking and we’d yell at her to stop. We only realized afterwards that it was her coming out of a painful seizure that made her whole body contorted. Talk about guilt.)
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, so sorry Heather! That must have been so hard!

Thanks. As you know though, life goes on and good things come out of it. We ADORE our doggies now, and we never would have had Primrose otherwise. Run also would have had to of been givin up as a senior months earlier had we not taken her in and been able to afford her medicine which my husbands Mom couldn’t. Runway is buried under a tree in our yard so we always refer to it as “Runways Tree” as opposed to the other trees in the yard. There’s even a gorgeous lilac bush and wild raspberries around it (which only started blooming after we buried her there).
Brittnee L says
I just read your comment and cried in public. My pup is close to a dog who is getting quite old. We know our pup will be that way when the old dog does die. It will be soooo sad for us too because we would hate to see him like that. I hope your wounds heal and your family becomes complete again
heather says
Aww thanks Brit. I’m happy to say that our family is whole again and we are super happy. My two girls now are the BEST friends and are wonderful.
Carrie says
Oh my, that broke my heart. Thank you for giving her a good 8 months and for for saving her from the shelter.

Just cried. That’s the saddest real pet story ever!
So glad Burger’s ok! Were you freaking out in the car?! Seizures scare the crap out of me. My cat fell off the 1/2 wall down into the front room (prob 8-9′), but only suffered from embarrasement :).
lyndsay @ that 70s house says
poor burger! i would have had a mini panic attack if one of our cats had a seizure :(. so glad he is OK!
i love michelle’s powder room makeover. graphic stencils= amazing
Kim says
Poor Burger. Similar thing happened to Kirby, though without the seizure, recently. We’re pretty sure he strained his shoulder and he was limpy for a few days.
I love that bathroom. Makes me want to tear out the beadboard in our half bath and replace it with… I don’t even know what to call that lol
Caitlin @ Hardly Housewives says
Poor Burger! I hope everything stays okay with the little guy. My dog is getting older (& fatter – I just posted on this today) and I HATE having to worry about age-related stuff with him.
I love the makeover… the paint job makes me think of pixels. Nerd alert!
Kim says
My heart was in my throat reading that! So glad he seems to be on the mend!!
Love the redesign! :)

I had goosebumps as soon as I started reading about burger, so glad the story had a happy ending since it would be awkward to explain crying at work.
That little bathroom packs a punch I’m loving the moldings! Not sure I’ll ever have the patience to stencil a whole wall, it would probably just end up half done and mocking me every time I saw it.
heather says
I had to read the end before the story to see if he was ok or not. Then I sort of just breezed over the reader re-design..which was good but phew – dog people are pulling for burger!
Allen says
What I liked best is the part were you said Burger was ok!
(Sorry we paranoid pup people have such petite, pinpointed perception, Michelle)

I almost teared up reading that story about Burger! So so glad he’s ok!

Poor Burger! I’m so glad he’s okay.
I love that stencil in that bathroom. Definitely my favorite part. It’s simple but really graphic and interesting too.
Janelle D says
Poor Burgs. So happy he’s back to his hyper little self. Now onto the redo, I am definitely digging the dark wood contrasted with the stark white walls. (My Pinterest is ALL OVER this combo of wood & white.) When I used to think of black and white bathrooms I would picture those ugly dated diner-style ones with white tiles and black border tile, but now instead I’ll think of this. Thanks for sharing, Michelle! It looks fabulous.
Melissa says
Noooooo! Not Burger! I care more about him than the reader redesign ;)
Carli says
Aw poor Burger!! So relieved to hear he’s doing better now. That must have been a real scare though.
Janice says
OK – you sacred me there with little Burger’s scare. Thank goodness he is OK. We had to put our sweet 17.5 year old Jack Russell down 13 days ago. We are heart broken. They are such an important part of our lives. How a 12 pound dog can rule the roost, I don’t know, but they sure do.
Anyway – glad Burger is OK, and love that powder room makeover. Inspiring!
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry to hear about your Jack Russell. But so glad to hear you had over 17 wonderful years with him. Burger sends his love.

So glad Burger is doing well! Our furry friend had to have dental surgery, so they gave him something that knocked him out for a few hours. When he came to, he was really distressed by how weird he felt from the lingering drugs. He spent the whole night staring at nothing and whining almost constantly, but varying from very low to low volume so it wasn’t irritating, just heartbreaking. Poor guy! As painful as that experience was for us, at least we knew he wasn’t in danger. I can’t even imagine how you guys were feeling.
I love the new stencil in Michelle’s bathroom, but what I’m really jonesing for is that awesome wood floor. Our rental house bathroom has a beat up white tile floor with dark grey grout. Ugh it always looks so gross and dirty.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, that’s so sad about how your pup dealt with the drugs – I hate when Burger is whining and I can’t console him!
-John
Erin says
So glad to hear your little man is okay. My best friend’s little dog (Chihuahua mix, I think) lived most of his adult life with intermittent seizures. The vet always said that as scary as they looked, they did not hurt him at all. Still frightening as heck, though! Give that Burger a hug and a treat for us. :)
YoungHouseLove says
That’s good to hear, Erin – I like the reassurance that it doesn’t hurt them as much as it looks!

OMG Burger! I can’t focus on the bathroom because I can only imagine how scared you and he must have been! I too have a chi-chi (Rocky). He was sitting on my bf’s lap, heard a nosie, jumped and hit his eye on the corner of the desk. We too rushed to the vet – the whole time he was squinting and his eye was watery. The minute we get there, I am holding him and the tech asks me what is wrong with him? I’m hysterical thinking “Can’t you see?” When I turn him to look at Rocky BOTH EYES WERE WIDE OPEN. That little hairball knew he was at the vet and stopped acting sick for the attention. I think we might rename him Leo DiCaprio for that Oscar winning performance. :) Virtual hugs and treats for Burger from me!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, that’s hilarious! Rocky punked you! So glad he’s ok.
