Quick update: Today we’ll be getting cozy in Boston at the West Elm on 160 Brookline Avenue for cookies, cocoa, and a book signing at 6pm. More info here. We’d love to see ya there!
We shared a sneak peek of this House Crashing adventure in our post about Cincinnati, and we finally sifted through the 200+ photos that we took to get this post together for ya. So let’s let ourselves in, shall we?
Did you see the little welcome note right on that happy yellow door? So cute, eh? And I love the three glass panes in that door. As for who lives here, meet Rick and Jessie. They were literally the sweetest folks we met the entire time we were in Cincy. Not only did they wait for us for over an hour at our hotel when our plane was delayed (eeks!), but they were so nice for the entire few hours we spent with them (since we didn’t have a car in Cincinnati they drove us to their house, chatted me up while John shot the place, and then drove us back to our hotel). So we’re officially “real friends” since we spent so much time bonding. Haha. But enough chit-chat. Let’s get to their awesome casa.
There were lots of homemade touches around the house, like this cool mason jar vase hanging from a rustic wood coat hook next to the yellow front door (which is painted in Valspar’s Santa Monica Blvd).
As for their kitchen, you might recognize it from this Reader Redesign. It’s always fun when someone invites us to crash them after we’ve seen one of their room makeovers, and let’s just say the rest of the house was just as awesome as their amazing kitchen (which was so much fun to see in person).
The cabinets are Ikea and they hung them all themselves as well as selecting things like butcherblock for the island and gorgeous soapstone for the rest of the counters.
This picture doesn’t do it justice (it looks a lot more “loud and swirly” than it really was in person – it was very subtle and sophisticated). It’s this gorgeous dark stone that looks like honed black granite but they said it’s really easy to take care of (no issues with staining or scratching so far). We’ve heard dark honed granite can be a bit higher maintenance, so soapstone sounds like a great alternative.
Where they built in their fridge they also added a framed out chalkboard, which was so sweet. The funniest part was that it said “we love the sun in our house” but ironically we were shooting just after the sun went down thanks to that delayed flight (our first house crash ever without natural light) – but we’re so thankful that we still got a bunch of good shots. It’s kinda hard not to when a house is this charming. How sweet is that yellow stool?
Here’s a shot from the kitchen looking towards the dining space they’re working on. They’re going to build in a bench against the wall for sort of a banquette feeling and add some giant art on the wall between those floating shelves that they hung. And that sweet striped runner is from Dash & Albert.
They also had this awesome wood wall in their living area that John and I loved. And everything from the media cabinet that they painted themselves to the homemade art (where they showcased dates that were important to them) had us grinning like fools. It really was one of those awesomely personalized homes.
There’s also a little desk area across from the wood wall in the living room, with a cheerful green filing cabinet and some more handmade art.
I love that yellow glass lamp (from World Market) with the swirly canvas behind it.
In the hallway, their homemade ruler that they use to measure both of their girls had us smiling (which Jessie actually did as one of our Pinterest Challenges).
Rick and Jessie have two daughters, and their youngest one’s room was full homemade art (framed craft paper)…
… and a homemade mobile…
… while their other daughter’s room had things Clara would totally go nuts for (check out that amazing play kitchen!!!!).
This plastic animal art was especially awesome. Yup, I totally had a moment with it. Love. Jessie actually got the idea here and did her own spin here.
So there you have Jessie and Rick’s charming home. We are SO GRATEFUL to them for waiting for us and being such amazing hosts while we traipsed around taking photos and chatting their ears off. You can see more over on their blog, but first let’s play the favorite part game. We all know I’m crazy about the animal art but I also love love love that play kitchen and those dark soapstone counters. And John was especially enamored with the apron sink and the modern dark window trim above it in the kitchen.
Psst- Don’t wanna stop snooping around? You can check out dozens of House Crashing adventures right here.

First of all – LOVE this house crash.
Second of all – I was just scrolling along happily soaking up the awesomeness of this house until you put in the kitchen to dining room shot. And then I scrolled faster and realized, “Dude I totally follow this blog (Cape 27) already and LOVE IT.” Apparently DIY blogging is a small world! :D

It looks like they painted an IKEA Bekvam stool…for $19.99 and a pot of paint, you too could have this awesomeness.

I love their house. Your style is very similar! Someday I want a yellow front door!
Agnes says
Ya know, I REALLY love the YHL decorating style and how it has inspired others but I’m really getting sick of all these apparent YHL knock-offs on reader redesigns. Yellow door? White kitchen with mocha flooring? Moonshine-esque walls? Spray painted animals? Tons of yellow spray paint? DIY play kitchen? Right down to the white Parsons desk with the ottoman underneath it!
This isn’t meant to be a hurtful comment – I’m sure that these people are super sweet and I acknowledge that they’ve put a lot of hard work into their home, but this is just a replica of the YHL house. All I’m saying is, I’d love to see more reader redesigns that, while are inspired by YHL, contain more originality and personality.
YoungHouseLove says
We just love to share what inspires us (and what we think might inspire others) so whether it’s an intricately painted media cabinet, or a new countertop material that we’ve never seen, or starched fabric that acts like wallpaper, we’re excited to pass it on! We’re drawn to a ton of different types of homes (we love having a wide range of them on our House Crashing page). For example, the house we crashed last week had lots of natural elements (a stone wall, a wood ottoman made from a tree, a wood pergola over an outdoor kitchen) and we have an awesome old farmhouse with high ceilings along with a mid-century home with retro details (like unpainted wood paneling that actually looks cool!) on the agenda for the coming weeks. We love switching things up, and of course welcome any and all submissions! Hope it helps:)

Rebecca says
I just wrote a similar comment (down below, you beat me to it!) I totally agree with you Agnes! I thought the same thing about last week’s house crash too.
anna see says
I want to move into this house! So cheery and delightful!
Maureen says
When I see people that have small children and STILL manage to keep their house clean as well as having their home completely finished, I can’t help but feel jealous. But in a good way. :) I love this house. And most of all the kitchen and the craftsman style front door.
Chelsea @ two twenty one says
Uh oh. We crashed their blog.
Beautiful home! I love all the handmade art– especially in the nursery. And hel-lo gorgeous kitchen! Can’t wait to check out their blog when it’s back up.
Robin @ our semi organic life says
Dorky but I noticed the interior doors. Just plain awesome! Love the style and the ORB accents. Also I love all the yellow. It inspires me to put more of it in our place!
John says
Nice pictures of the house and the cover of Richmond Home magazine.

Christine says
I love this awesome house! It has great vibes. If I were their friend, I’d want to hang out there. My favorite parts are the giant ruler and, of course, the hot pink plastic animals. And overall clean and colorful look!
Christine says
…also, did they take down walls to open up the main living area? Or was it just built that way?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes they knocked down a huge wall to open things up! It was really amazing to see in person!

Kim @ Yellow Brick Home says
Good gracious, that animal art is ridiculous!
Janice says
The oversized ruler! Love that. And the little “Hello.” on the door. Very sweet and subtle.
Karen F says
cute house! love the pallet wall. I’ve decided I need more yellow in my home – such a happy color!
Megan H says
Question about the oven… When we moved into our current home, there was an oven under the counter with the stovetop in a different location — which is what it looks like they have done. In our kitchen, there was granite over the oven, and we found that anytime we used the oven, the counter became so hot you could have fried an egg on it. Okay, maybe not quite that hot, but in a very small kitchen where every inch of counter space mattered, it did make it unusable for food prep. I’m wondering if having the butcherblock counter (rather than stone) above the oven alleviates this problem?? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s hoping Jessie stops in with that info!
xo,
s
Jessie @ Cape 27 says
Hi Megan,
The appliance that you’re actually seeing in the butcher block island is a microwave. Fools a lot of people! No problems so far :) The oven is part of the range further down the kitchen. Hope that clears things up!
Jessie
Megan H says
Ah hah! Thanks, Jessie!
Jessica @ The Desert Abode says
I love the happy pops of yellow! And I’m totally taking notes on the nursery … :)
Ashley @ LibertyBelles says
Love love love it! Love how they put hello on their door. Too cute! But that wood wall is amazing.
Vanessa Gasca says
Love this house, so stylish and cozy.
Rebecca says
This one and the one last week seem like the shots could be from your own home. Do you ever see that resemblance? Do you feel like people “copy” you? Or is this just what is trending now? Just seeing so many dark mocha flooring with while trim, white kitchen cabs with pops of yellow and green, industrial stools at a kitchen bar, yellow front doors, everything ORB’d, big leaning mirrors,, white frames on the wall, gray and yellow color palette with lots of white ceramic type stuff, etc. I love all these things, but am seeing them so much lately. (Not just on YHL, in other design blogs too.) Just wondered what your take on it is?
YoungHouseLove says
I just think things come in and out of design, and blogs and mags and design books all seem to go with the flow. Everything old is new again, etc… although I hope avocado green appliances never come back! Haha.

Michele Ament says
I felt like I needed to respond to this. I am the homeowner of the house that was crashed last week. I would like to say that everything that we did in our home was a collaboration between only my husband and I. While we do gain inspiration from YHL and other design blogs there is never an attempt to “copy” anything (except for the yellow area rug, I drooled over that ever since seeing it on YHL and knew that I had to have it!). We, and I am sure most homeowners, make their space their own, and while they gather ideas and inspiration from others, it is truly their design, heart, and soul that makes it their home. Just my thoughts :)
Heather says
YHL is amazing and it is no surprise that John and Sherry inspire others with their design decisions. And just because they have a white kitchen with dark floors and bright colored accents does not mean that they own the idea, my husband and I have had a white kitchen with dark flooring and bright green and yellow accents for 5 years now. So my point to you Rebecca is: WHO CARES! Be nice, if you are not interested in this house crashing post, then move on, skim it, suggest a different style, but please don’t be rude as no one made you read this blog – you read it because you like it.
So often people say things on the internet that they would never say in real life and it’s time to tell those people to back off and move on to something else.
John and Sherry ignore this kind of comment please, these kinds of people can find a negative in anything they see and it hurts them so much to just be positive.
rebecca says
Heather, I think you took what I said the wrong way. I do not think what I said was mean or hurtful to John and Sherry, and their response to me did not indicate they took it as such. I have noticed this trending for awhile now, and wanted to ask their thoughts on it. This house crash lined up perfectly with my questions. From where I sit, John and Sherry are pros at interior design and I wanted their take on this trend. I asked if they “ever see that resemblance” because we only see a snapshot of the homes in the crash photos, and maybe when they are in the home it takes on a whole other vibe? I know having white cabinets and mocha flooring is not trademarked and it’s like saying “hey, I painted my walls gray first” which I agree is silly. That is why I used the quotes around the word copy. I also said that I love all those things that I described. I see this look a lot and wanted to know if they thought it was trending. With the book coming out, this type of design will perhaps be popping up in more places and I wanted their take on that. And your statement that my comment was something people write on the internet but wouldn’t say in person isn’t how I feel about it. I would totally have this conversation about this trend in real life. Love YHL and am not being a meanie. Just wanted to clarify as this sort of went a weird direction that I wasn’t expecting. I just wanted to talk trends. :-)
