You’ve heard of rolling out the red carpet, but what about the pink one? It’s Clara’s favorite color, and a nice warm tone (after filling most of the house with cool blues, greens, and grays, it’s nice to bring in some warm tones to balance things out). Plus the way the playful dots in the rug mix with the bold colors in Clara’s big girl bedding = almost more fun than my brain can handle. In person it’s even more happy! Seriously. Come over right now.
As for the price? Pretty darn hard to beat. We’ve had our eyes peeled for a while for something that would work with the blanket and general color scheme that we’re doing in there (red + pink with a lot of other pops like navy, yellow, teal, etc) but everywhere we looked (local decorating outlet, Overstock.com, Target, etc) was selling larger 7 x 9′ rugs for around $400-700, which was a little more than we wanted to spend. We even tried craigslist and ebay to no avail.
So we held out and kept looking and finally spotted this 7′ x 9′ guy for $236.95 (marked down from $629) on Joss & Main. It’s 100% wool, hand tufted, and the gradated color and fun imperfect dots that appear to be drawn on just felt so “Clara” to us. So we went for it. Not gonna lie, I was giddy when we clicked that order button. Especially since they were running a free shipping special (shipping fees can really add up on a big item like a rug).
Then after clicking that order button all giddiness subsided and we did that thing where we silently freak out about ordering a rug sight unseen. But since it worked out so well with our living room rug, we just tried to hope for the best.
Then it arrived and this happened:
Apparently rugs are fun even before they’re unrolled in the room.
Then when Clara was napping we finally got to see it in her big girl room/playroom. This space definitely started out super tame with very soft milky-tea colored walls…
… and now it’s looking pretty crazy-pink thanks to the bedding and the rug…
… but we think once we add in the art, curtains, new light fixture and other items that will break the pink up and balance things out (there will definitely be a large object or two on the rug and we’re thinking about navy for some of the frames and maybe even the light fixture). Remember how the middle makes no sense? Well I’m crazy impatient. Haha. Can’t wait to see it after a few more steps!
In the meantime we’re soaking up some of the plushness and pattern (polka dots + a gradient!) that the rug adds. Most of our rugs are the same tone throughout, so we’ve never had one that gets darker as you step into the room.
The polka dots are definitely my favorite part though. No doubt.
Are you guys ordering any rugs online and holding your breath until they come? Are you working on a room that’s only about 20% done so you’re in that giddy-can’t-wait-for-this-to-come-together stage like us? It’s so funny how this room has been a pretty even combination of paint, furniture we already had, craigslist finds, and now there’s a new rug in the mix. Gotta love a smorgasbord…
Mary | lemongroveblog says
Ordering rugs online is SOO hard! I’ve found if I snag a good enough deal online that I can unload them on craigslist, if it turns out I really just don’t like it…
I think this one is super cute for Clara’s space though, ya nailed it! I bet she is super pumped about her big girl room! Can’t wait to see it all put together. :)

The rug looks great! I love how the room is coming together. :)

I always want to order one on-line, especially when I see such good prices. I just get worried about the quality and not being able to feel it for myself. I also owrry about the no return policy at alot of places or the high cost of return. You will have to let us know how you like the quality of this rug as time goes on.
YoungHouseLove says
Will do! We have had our living room one over a year and its great! My tip is natural fibers (100% cotton, 100% wool) tend to hold up really well!

Love the rug!
And John, I think you should paint all your book tour stops onto the map. Kinda like a visual of how far and how many places you guys go to show the love, eh???
heather says
i think that’s a great idea for a map! or even do it with string connecting each place.
YoungHouseLove says
We have a cork backed map in our frame hall, so we are planning to add red pins for all of our tour stops. Can’t wait!

Love how it’s different on each side!
I actually just unrolled a sight unseen rug in my living room this weekend and I gaze at it lovingly everytime I walk by. And I’ve already ordered another one online with a groupon I had…still holding my breath on that one.

My dad used to work for an interior decorator and as kids my sister and I loved to visit him at his work. There were rolls and rolls of carpet that were perfect “balance beams” for little girls!

I have the hardest time shopping for rugs, I just never know what size, or how much to spend… they always seem so expensive! online would be the hardest for me!

One trick I like is to tape it off on the floor with painter’s tape to try to picture it :)

I have also found that if you can’t decide between two sizes, you are usually better off going bigger. Nothing looks worse than a rug that is too small for a room.

This is great advice!!

Oh I love it!!! I am looking for a nice rug for our kitchen but have had absolutely no luck. I get a little antsy ordering off the web but you have renewed my faith. :-)

that is an amazing rug!!! fun! if i could, i would totally have that in my house. but alas it wouldn’t work =)

The “OCD” side of me wishes the pinks matched a little more closely. It appears that the pink in the comforter is a little more “red/orange pink” and the rug is a little more “blue pink.” Then again, I’m one of those matchy-matchy types, and I definitely don’t have a blog or a best-selling book about my home improvement. So what do I know?! Ha! :)
YoungHouseLove says
In person it’s pretty close and I think once we layer more stuff in there will be many tones of pink and red and other colors (like teal, yellow, and navy) so it’ll all just mesh, ya know? Can’t wait for it to come together :)

What a fun carpet! It would be super for my guest bedroom! I snatched up a great fuchsia colored one at an awesome price, but it is not quite as big as I’d love it to. “How to grow your rugs” would be a great tutorial you guys could post ;-)

The only scary thing for me about ordering rugs online is worrying about how you would ship it back if you hate it! We ordered our living room rug from RugsUSA. I was so nervous about it but it was so easy to order (scarily easy!) and thankfully, we ended up loving it :)
Elizabeth says
We ordered a rug from there, too! So inexpensive and probably my favorite thing in our house
Samantha says
I have to admit it’s a little too much pink for me :) But it sounds like you guys love it, and I’m sure you’re right… once the rest of the room is put together it will balance out better. And even if it doesn’t, I love that you’re building this room around what Clara wants!
Lizzie says
The price for a 100% wool rug that size is awesome! I have been ogling a few Joss & Main rugs that I might have to pull the trigger on.
The dresser would look awesome in a metallic. Taupe with some gold brushed over it. Her Big Girl room is definitely going to make some teenagers jealous!
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh metallic is a fun idea!

Stacey says
I saw a dresser very similar to Clara’s painted with metallic paint on pinterest and it is stunning! I would love a metallic paint tutorial. . . No pressure!
I don’t often comment on something I don’t like because it seems so negative on a blog full of positive. . . But here goes. I really love the rug but I would rotate it so that the daybed side of the room doesn’t look so busy?
Otherwise. . . I’m nearly 28 and I’m envious of Clara’s lady-pink room!

Great rug, for sure! I’m getting geared up to put the finishing touches on my boys’ shared bedroom. They’re 6 and 4 and they love bunking together. Their room has been in “process” for the last 6 months, so I’ll be happy to have it completely put together and done.

Oooh I LOVE IT!!! The gradient is so cool and kind of gives it a painterly touch!! Can’t wait to see the room progress! I’m simultaneously loving and hating doing my guest room. I love the process, but I’m so antsy to get it done!

Gosh, you guys are amazing. I’m not the biggest fan of pink but I must say you guys do pink right! Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Have to say that I like the matching mommy-daughter toenail polish best of all. (Not a fan of pink myself, except in its strongest raspberry tones, but what a fun room for a pink-loving girl that’s shaping up to be!)

I love that you are selecting things that Clara loves now, but easily can grow with her. I’m 26 and would love that rug in my room!! When you guys try out different patterns and styles, it gives me confidence to do the same AND you have me addicted to daily “window-shopping” on Joss & Main! One day I’ll actually buy something haha.

Seriously you guys? I *just* yesterday was agonizing over my first online rug purchase. I have wall-to-wall beige carpet in my house, but I’m looking to branch out with a bold round rug in my baby-on-the-way’s nursery. So tough to commit to such a large purchase sight-unseen, but free shipping is a big plus when you can find it!
Sarah says
Is it kind of weird that I would have put the light side under the bed? I think I may have a little OCD and I keep thinking the the highest traffic area being the lightest will show so much more wear and tear.
YoungHouseLove says
Hahaha that was totally my inclination too! We tried it both ways and John convinced me that walking into the room and seeing it get darker was cool, so it’s this way for now. I love the polka dots with the bedding as well, but I’ll totally spin it if I want to hide a stain under the bed :)
xo,
s
Charity says
Does it fit going the other way? So you can have it graduating across the length of the bed and not from underneath? Either way I LOVE it.
YoungHouseLove says
The room is longer than it is wide, so it works best with the rug going in the same direction :)
xo
s
JG says
Yeah, I thought that too – especially since it would graduate towards the white of the bed, which would be cool!
YoungHouseLove says
We tried it both ways – I promise :) John and I just both liked it better with the polka dots playing with the chevron blanket. And this way when you walk into the room, you walk towards the party. Hahah!

I’m hoping to score a great deal like you guys did!

What a great find! How perfect! It really adds the splash of color to bump up the color factor in there! Did you guys try the dots on the other side of the room near her dresser? I think that might be fun, it would also be like the dots would gradiate into the chevron on her bedding. Just a thought to spread out the pattern side of the room a bit. It looks great as is though!!!
YoungHouseLove says
We actually tried it both ways and like the dots with the bedding and the gradient near the door (so it gets brighter as you walk into the room) but who knows where we’ll end up as the room continues to come together :)

Where did you get the C pillow? I saw a similar one on sale at Joss and Main but it’s $60!

It was from Joss & Main back during Christmas sales (many prices on their site fluctuate a lot so I’d recommend checking back and watching the price go up or down – and pouncing when it gets low enough!).

Clara’s room is looking great. Joss & Main grabbed my attention at the end of 2012, and I ordered the Fisher in 8 x 10, and we couldn’t be happier. The stripes are happy, the colors are perfect, the size has created a cozy space for us to nestle
Patty says
Is the back of Clara’s bedspread knitted? Or is that a throw gracing the last photo? Or is it just a knit-inspired print?
YoungHouseLove says
It’s a knit throw I think!

Beautiful!
I’ve never been a pink fan til our daughter was born, but her coloring is perfect for pink clothes. She just shines in it.
We’re looking for a rug for our living room as she’s eager to move and groove. Yet, we’ll be moving in the summer, so it’s hard to spend money temporarily. We’ve thought about a carpet remnant, too.
Any thoughts are welcome from anyone!
Thanks!

I just love that dresser.

Looks so good! We recently decided to convert a former-bachelor’s second-living-room/cigar-room into a dining room (his idea, I swear). We have a dining room table we inherited but its small for the space and we’re at a loss with how to utilize the whole room. Last night I told him I was going to pray John and Sherry would announce that they are again doing mood-boards for blog-followers! haha. Best thing i’ve learned from you guys is not to rush into buying ‘stuff’ to fill a room, but rather to be patient and only get something if you LOVE it!

Asymmetrical rugs are so fun. The dots are cool. I wish Joss & Main shipped to Canada. They have some real gems up right now. The rugs here in Halifax seem to all be overpriced. We need a pretty big one, so to get it full-price would be a bit of a stretch. I’m on the hunt!
Lisha says
I just bought a rug off RugsUSA – it was the only place I could find reasonable shipping to Canada after extensive internet research. They also have crazy sales on regular basis. I paid under $200 for an 8×10 cotton rug including shipping! Hasn’t come yet, so I can’t speak to the quality, but I’m excited.

Hello, there! I loved this rug not only because of its size but also because of its color. I love pink and magenda color just like my two daughters. Unfortunatelly I cannot put any rug in my kids room because of their trundle bed. We can’t have everything, right?

Could you describe how plush it is? I’ve been eyeing rugs on Joss & Main and on Zulily whenever they have sales, but am so nervous about buying a rug online! It would be for our son’s nursery so I want something he can crawl/sit/play on when that time comes (he’s currently still a 4 1/2 month lump, haha!)
Also, I saw a rug on Joss & Main a couple weeks ago that was called the “Clara” rug and made me think of you guys. it was a teal-ish (hard to tell on computer) rug that had die cut details at the corners, was so cute!
YoungHouseLove says
It’s as thick as any other 100% wool rug we’ve bought, so u assume its pretty standard. Maybe an inch and a half to two inches? Very nice and plush. Shedded a lot at first but after a few vacuumings it has calmed down :)

Loving your posts about this. It’s bringing me back to when we did our daughter’s big girl room when she was almost 3. We are now in the process of redoing her room since she is almost 11 and tired of all the pink :-(.
