After recently revealing that John would be coming on as a full time blogger here on the home front (and mentioning that we had a full scale guest bedroom to office-slash-guest-bedroom-slash-playroom makeover in the cards) we’re back to spill more details about that space’s big switcheroo. Spoiler alert: we need a sleeper sofa, STAT.
Let’s take a look back – waaaaay back – at what the room looked like when we moved in.
It was actually a pretty blank slate to begin with, so replacing the ceiling fan with a flush mount fixture (like this- basic and cheap, but still an improvement) seemed to raise the ceiling about a foot. Then we just painted the walls a neutral tone, added some crown molding, stained the floor a richer mocha color (which we also did to the rest of the existing hardwoods), switched out the valances for some clean-lined (and super cheap) roman shades from Ikea, and brought in a hand-me-down bed from a family member with some fun linens and a DIY headboard that we whipped up. Even the wall art was made on a budget.
We loved our little guest bedroom and it served us well for years. In fact we were pretty sad when we realized that we’d have to make some major changes to the room when it came to accommodating an office for two along with a spot for a wee one to play without losing the can-sleep-two-people function that it always provided. Being use-what-we-have kind of people, our first thought was that maybe we could reposition the bed against two walls to create a daybed type feeling and free up some floor space. So we rotated it into the corner and came up with the idea to upholster another headboard panel (which we drew in thanks to Photoshop below, see the arrow?) to demonstrate the idea:
And remember the rug we snagged on super clearance from the Pottery Barn Outlet for $300 off a while back (with every intention of working it into the guest bedroom for some added softness)?
Well, we laid it out under the bed in an attempt to further ground that daybed/sleeping corner of the room. Burger seemed to like it (ten points if you find him), but we weren’t convinced.
The problem? The full sized bed still took up a huge portion of the extremely small 10′ x 10.5′ room… leaving Clara zero floor space to play on while one or both of us worked (and speaking of working, we really had no clue how we’d fit two desk spaces into this plan as it was). So we decided that we had to pull the plug on the full sized bed and come up with an alternate sleeping solution for our guests (preferably one that could be tucked away or minimized during the rest of our time in that room so it could more easily accommodate two bloggers and a baby most of the time.
Which meant that it was time to hit up Craigslist to see who would cough up $60 for our full sized bed frame and hand-me-down Sealy mattress & boxspring. The craziest thing was that by the time we had the bed disassembled we already had a buyer in route to our house! And within two hours of listing our bed we’d sold it (for our full $60 asking price). Pretty sweet, eh? Here’s the mattress waiting for pick-up in the nursery.
And you can tell this part of the makeover actually occurred a while back because there’s no skirt on the crib and the nursery art wall hasn’t been altered yet. We just like to do one project at a time, so after taking a quick nursery hiatus to sell the mattress we were back on baby-room duty while the office waited its turn.
Oh and because we know that you guys like seeing our house all torn up, here’s the master bedroom with our guest bedroom linens piled high on the bed while we waited for our new Craigslist friend to come cart the bed away. Burger seems to sneak into every bed photo that he can, doesn’t he?
So anyway, once the ol’ full sized bed was sold and the rest of the things in the space were cleared out, we were actually able to give the green bench and the bedside table that used to live in the guest bedroom a second life in the nursery (we love repurposing everything that we can so that was a thrill and a half for us).
And we were left with a blissfully bare space to analyze every which way…
… to see how we could possibly squeeze a double office and a play area for Clara-Bean into the 10′ x 10.5′ room (along with maintaining the can-sleep-two function that we’d grown so accustomed to over the years).
First we seriously considered a murphy bed. You know, those fold-out-from-the-wall options that we’ve seen popping up all over the place lately. The downside was that many traditional murphy beds were not only extremely pricey, but the layout of the room wouldn’t accommodate the fold-up function since two walls had windows which would have been obscured when the bed was folded up (not a good idea in such a small space since we need all the light we can get). And the other two walls wouldn’t work thanks to the doorway into the room and a closet that we needed to maintain access to. Even if the layout could have accommodated a murphy bed, the one thing we didn’t like about it was the fact that when it was tucked up and away it didn’t provide a place to sit (which we knew would come in handy for everything from nursing to relaxing with Baby P while the other 50% of YHL blogs away at their desk). So we wondered if we could bring in a piece that would provide functional seating space all the time, just with a much smaller footprint when it wasn’t serving as a full sized bed. Yup, we’re talking about a sleeper sofa.
But we had some serious reservations about how comfy a sleeper would really be for our guests. Almost everyone has had the ol’ rollbar-dented-back experience when crashing on an archaic sleeper sofa, and we definitely want our visitors to be 100% comfy (as opposed to stiff and sore in the am). But we’ve actually slept on some just-as-comfortable-as-a-normal-bed sleeper sofas on occasion, so we knew that if we didn’t skimp on the quality we could probably find something that would meet our needs when it came to providing some nice seating by day and sleeping by night when it was all folded out and fluffed up with linens and pillows. So our next step was to do some internet trolling to see what was out there online- just to test the waters. Here’s what we dug up:
1. This $689 Target option
2. This $899 Ikea option
3. This $1400 Crate & Barrel option
But the issue that we had with online options were that we couldn’t really lay on them to see how they felt with the mattress all folded out. And of course the $1400 Crate and Barrel option (which we could check out in stores for comfort-factor) was a bit more than we were hoping to spend. Heck the $899 Ikea version felt expensive to two cheap-os like us. And blindly ordering the $689 option (which was only available online and not something we could experience for ourselves to ensure that it was soft and easy to sleep on) felt a bit too risky to super cautious sofa-sissies like us. Besides, that honey wood was a bit too futon-ish for us, so the fact that we’d have to paint it or somehow make it over after paying full price and not being able to try it out felt like a bit much. And we decided we preferred upholstered arms for the higher end look and for the comfort factor when it’s being used as a sofa (for nursing, reading stories to Clara, etc).
So after exhausting our online sleeper sofa search, we decided to hit up our favorite local furniture dealer where we could actually fold out the sleeper sofas and take them for a spin instead of blindly ordering them and hoping for the best. Sofa Design is actually where we got our beloved living room sofa (read how we saved $400 more than our Pottery Barn couch right here) and when we pulled into the parking lot to be greeted by a Floor Clearance Sample sign we couldn’t help but get all hyper and excited that we might just find the deal we were hoping for…
JACKPOT! We scored a full sized sleeper sofa made by Rowe (one of our favorite sofa manufacturers, in fact they made our aforementioned living room sofa) for just $699- thanks to the fact that it was a floor model. So it was just ten dollars steeper than the futon-ish Target version but a lot more plush and posh looking (and feeling! there’s even a comfort guarantee that you can’t feel the bar under the mattress unless you’re over 350 lbs). Like nerds we totally pulled it out in the store and laid on it for a while as we thanked our lucky stars and then popped up to sign on the dotted line. And although we’re usually neutral-sofa-people, we actually really like the subtle blue-green color of the cushions since they work pretty seamlessly with the rest of our whole-house color palette while injecting some fun (and stain hiding durability) into our future office/guest room/playroom.
We placed it right under the higher window which really opened up the room and allowed so much more of our lovely Pottery Barn rug to be seen.
And you know what that means: waaaaay more floor space to accommodate a desk or two along with plenty of Baby P play area to spare.
But that’s just the beginning of our multifunctional office transformation. Stay tuned as we tackle more floor-plan maximization, paperwork and file storage, desks and chairs for two, art and accessories, toy storage, and even a new DIY light fixture makeover. Whew. And feel free to tell us all about any sleeper sofa or murphy bed victories that you guys have experienced. Have you built your own pull down bed? Or stumbled upon a super comfortable sleeper sofa on sale? Spill the beans.

I am so excited for another Petersik room re-do! You guys already have me hooked! I can’t wait for more details!!

I’m so excited to see this room come together!! We’re trying to pick new paint colors for our kitchen, dining and living rooms (all one big room and all in Chatham Tan right now) with windows on the east and west walls. It’s sooo hard to pic a color that looks good all day long. Is that Water Chestnut on the walls in your office?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Liz,
It’s actually Sand White by Glidden- one of our favorite sandy tans with a cool grey undertone… so it’s almost greige in certain lights. We love it so much we won’t be repainting- especially with a brighter sofa (we love the idea of a neutral wall to temper things).

Looking forward to seeing how you handle a richly colored piece of furniture – it’s a pretty big contrast to the light neutrals you typically choose!

Great Idea for a sleeper… I was wondering how you guys planned on fitting everything in there! Funny, all the way from Sarasota, Florida I know exactly where that furniture store is… Sometimes your photos make me feel like I am back in my hometown ;)
Lisa says
What a steal! I can’t wait to see more. We’d love to do something similar to our office, but we have lots of Geek Stuff. Think big computers with multiple large monitors (just wait, this is what happens when you’ve been bitten by the photography bug!)

Love the idea…don’t love the couch. It feels very 90s to me but maybe that’s the color and the pillow you have on there. Can’t wait to see how it ties in with the rest of the room though – maybe you’ll change my mind. :)

It’s ridiculous how excited I am by this play by play. New room at YHL! Furniture hunting! Bargain spotting! Storage options! STATIONERY!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO, it’s coming along really nice and what a sweet deal on the sleeper! I just love seeing your house a mess too! Does that make me a bad person? Hope not. Can’t wait to see the desk situation you came up with.

This remake is close to my heart, since we’re planning on doing the exact same thing in our new house! I am glad to see that y’all made it work, stylishly too.
Laura in LA says
Question….how come you aren’t using your newly re-done basement as an office space for two? Is it a little too detached to make a convenient full time office space?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Laura,
Alas, our basement isn’t heated or cooled, and since it’s a separate entry space (we need to walk outside and down some stairs to get to it) it’s not the most convenient thing in the world- especially if we have a sleeping baby that we need to check on. Plus the concrete floors aren’t exactly Clara-friendly, but we’re so glad we have that space for added storage (especially since babies = tons of stuff!). We just added that desk area so when we’re down there we can sort through boxes without squatting on the floor- it really does come in handy.

Great timing!
I have the exact same issue with my tiny guest bedroom.
There is a double bed that takes up all space, so I’ve ended up with a room that is rarely used.
I can’t wait to follow the room’s progress! And I’ll be sure to copy most of your ideas, so when you come to Greece, come and pay a visit…! You’ll feel right at home!

Love all your cute wall groupings. Esp. in the nursery. Do you frame the stuff yourselves?? Ideas please. Not neccessarily for a nursery, but just in wall groupings in general, with photos, and the other stuff that you have framed.Like, do you use scrapbooking papers?? Ideas please. I never can find the things I want to add to photo groupings. I love your blog.

Hey Nancy,
We do frame everything ourselves, with Target and Ikea frames (so it’s super affordable). Here’s a video full of art grouping ideas: https://www.younghouselove.com/getting-the-hang-of-it/

Cool! Can’t wait to see this. It’s going to be sooo helpful for me. I’ll be working from home in T-minus 20 days and will be doing an office makeover. We have a 3 bedroom right now too (no kiddos yet) but may purchase some furniture/other elements to plan for a guest bedroom/office one day when we do start a fam.
Briana says
I’m very excited to see this project. Once we have our own little bean we’ll need to transform our current guest bedroom into a nursery and make the office an dual space office/guest room for 2/play room. And the office is about the same size as yours.
Laurie says
can’t wait for another room redo, but I’m wondering about the source info on the larger of the two pillows (the multi-green droppy one).
Maddie E says
We have a sleeper in our living room that does the same job (we have a one bedroom apartment, so a guest bed in general was never an option). It was a hand-me-down (and free!) so we’re happy to have it, but it’s not so comfortable. Guests say the bed is quite nice, but the couch itself isn’t the greatest to sit on. We’re saving our pennies for a new one, and will definitely make sure to go your route and sit/lay test them at the store!

I am so excited that you all have begun to post about this re-do! I have halted all work on my office (in new house) anticipating the views into your progress. I’d kick myself if I continue on, knowing that you will have some great ideas I’ll want to incorporate into my own home office. Can’t wait to see more!!

Ahh, I can’t wait to see the rest of this room redo!! How long have you guys been working on this project (I know you mentioned the unfinished nursery, and it looks like snow in the Sofa Design picture)? How long does it usually take you to plan/work/finish a room redo? Just curious :)
I just found and started reading your site about a month ago, but wish I had found you earlier. My husband and I moved into our first house about a year ago and, in reaction to living in can’t-paint-the-walls apartments for years, we went a little color crazy and chose a lot of bold colors for our walls. I still love the colors, but I’m finding that sometimes they can limit our other decorating options. Anyway, I guess that’s my long way of telling you two that I love how fresh and bright your house is! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and congratulations on Clara–she is beautiful!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Emily,
We actually just took a one day hiatus on the nursery to sell the bed and pick up that sofa (we actually completed both tasks in an afternoon) and then we were right back to the nursery makeover. It just gets too crazy when we try to take on two rooms at a time, but we wanted to take advantage of the end of season sale at Sofa Design so we went for it. The room has pretty much been empty except for the new sofa since then though, until about a few weeks ago when we finished the nursery and picked up the office makeover again. Our room redos usually take us around a month and a half of weekly updates to get them completed. Of course if we could work on them for a solid week we could probably complete them a lot faster, but with the blog to attend to (and now a bambino!) we do things at a pretty conservative pace. And that seems to work out because we find that we have some good ideas along the way when we don’t rush or have crazy deadlines. Hope it helps!

I have been waiting for this post!!
We are having the same issue now that we have to turn our guest bedroom into a nursery. We have been looking everywhere for something that meets our standards as far as sofa beds/futons go. We did come across the IKEA Ektorp Sofa Bed (and could actually lay on it and everything in the store – Hooray!!)- you can see here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19840969
It’s actually pretty decent for only $649 (in white) and I was surprised at how comfortable it was (we bought the Ektorp chair for the nursery and love that). I think adding a feather bed would make it even more plush… the only problem is that we really have no place to put it! So that’s our dilemma as of today… dun dun dunnnn
I can’t wait to see how your office/guest room progresses so I can get some more ideas!! Good luck!!!
Ris says
I have a pretty nice futon (that magically doesn’t look too much like a futon) that I scored from Wal-Mart of all places. It has comfortably slept many friends and family members and I feel like I’ve definitely gotten my $150 worth out of it! I had to search high and low for several months but playing the waiting game really worked out in my favor!
Kate says
I like the sofa you picked out, and what a great deal! We also bought our (normal) couch as a floor model (we weren’t happy with any other choices in our budget range, but the floor model brought it down in price enough) and have been very happy with it. I can’t wait to see more!
I also wanted to say that I like your initial plan of putting the bed in the corner and putting a headboard on the side as well. It’s a good thing to file away in my head in case I need to do something similar in the future.
Kate @ Domesticating Kate says
We’re probably getting a new sofa for our living room to replace our huge, overstuffed sofa set and I’ve been considering getting a sleeper. You’re lucky to have a sofa superstore near you, and the one you picked looks great!
Has anyone tried that Ikea one you pictured? I love the look of that one.

Please, oh please, as you keep us updated on your home office transformation can you give us as many details as possible about your method for organizing all the bits and pieces that overwhelm a work space. The endless papers and files, the receipts, the tax records, the office supplies, the just-in-case-I’ll-need-it-one-day items that take up space. I am a writer who works from home (and is currently procrastinating by reading your great blog) and taming the disorganization beast is always a challenge. You had an earlier post sort-of touching on the subject (showing where you stack your magazines, keep paint samples inside the footstools etc., use three-ring binders for design ideas, etc.). But we need more….
Congrats on the bundle of joy, by the way. She’s beautiful.

Wow. Seems like we’re in sync. I’ve been looking online for a sleeper sofa so we’d have more room in the soon-to-be baby’s room! Thanks for sharing your story. I’ve pretty much concluded the same thing – need to look at local stores to get a good deal and a good feel for the right sofa bed. Hope it works out!

We experienced the same thing with our 2nd bedroom. We tried to make a full bed work plus our desk, but there just wasn’t enough room. My parent’s took my “old” bed back to their house and it looks great in their guest bedroom.

Looks like it’s coming together!
I’d like to make a similar space in our next place (will be moving this summer) We’d also like to be able to sleep 2 while still having space for office/crafting and play. I’ve been on the lookout for a trundle style daybed!
Amanda @geekdetails says
I found a very neat wood cabinet that had a twin sized fold out bed in it. It’s vintage and awesome. Looks like a normal cabinet and just has the bed right up in it. I thought it was so cool. I want to paint “guest room” on the doors!
I love your little green couch though. It looks great in your room.

Looks great! I love the patterned pillow on the new sofa – where did you find that? The fabric looks vaguely familiar…

We actually got that pillow on clearance at our local West Elm before it (sniffle) went out of business. Maybe you can find it on ebay?

Unfortunately, I’ve never, ever slept on a comfortable sofa bed. And I have friends who spent a great deal of money on them. I’ve actually gotten up in the middle of the night and slept on the floor rather than spend another minute in a sofa bed.
I wonder if a twin daybed with a trundle would have worked?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Carrie,
It definitely could have worked except that we wanted to allow our coupled friends and family members (married or dating pairs are by far our most common visitors) the opportunity to sleep next to each other instead of on two different tiers so a comfy tested-by-us sleeper seemed like the best bet. And we’re happy to say that more than a few couples have crashed on it since we got it (especially since we have a cute little newborn that everyone loves to visit) and they have nothing but sweet things to say about it. No floor sleepers yet! Hope it helps.

Susan says
I love your idea of the ‘daybed’ full size bed. Can you tell me some of your pros/cons to the corner headboard?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Susan,
Hmm, we don’t really know about pros and cons- it’s just all about personal preference. We thought it would look more intentionally nestled in the corner (instead of shoved there like an afterthought) if we continued the headboard across the other side of the bed so both edges that touch the wall would have a bit of padding to lean back on. Sadly it still didn’t free up enough floor space so we didn’t get to try it out!

Great sofa! I can’t wait to see the transformation. We have a sleeper sofa from Crate & Barrel and it still feels like a sleeper sofa to me…The absolute best sleeper sofa, I mean absolute best – is a Comfort Sleeper from American Leather. But with a $2000 (or more) price tag, it made it just out of reach for us. But seriously, if you have the money – it is definitely the way to go. One of our furniture stores carries them and I have slept on them a few times. They really are unbelievable. Check it out:

I love that you wrote this just as I was searching craigslist for sleeper sofas. We have a 3 bedroom house, and with the grown-ups in one room, toddler in the other, and baby #2 on the way, we’re losing our guest room and have no idea what to do about the grandparents (who visit often and need a place to crash). Don’t want to put them in with the kiddos, so sleeper sofa in the living room is looking like the only real option. Only real problem is we’re looking to budget less than a third of what the couch you guys bought cost (2 kids are definitely more expensive than one). Oh well, we’ll make it work somehow!

We’re in the exact same spot — need a sleeper sofa that is great for guests and good for sitting on, without spending a fortune. I’ve done TONS of research — possibly one of the better ones on the market is the AU furniture line sold at Macy’s (Named the Alexis sofa)–$2200 smackeroo’s! This sofa/sleeper will go in our den so it has to ‘hold up’ to regular sitting, be clean-lined, neutral color. I have tested it out, very comfortable. BUT that price is high. A Rowe model is possible for us and I’ll drive the two hours to try one out. And I’m going to look locally as well but our choices are few in this area. We have a fair amount of guests and I want them to be super comfortable.
Julia says
I’m wondering whether you guys hope to have more kids in the future and where baby #2 would sleep. We have a 3 bedroom house as well, 1 toddler, 1 parent working from home full-time and the other parent working from home 50% of the time. Our guest bedroom has a full size bed and I’d love to get rid of it and turn the room into an office, but what will I do if I have another baby in the next couple years? I wouldn’t want to put so much money into an office makeover only to have to redo it again in a short while for a new baby. Have you considered any future baby plans in deciding to makeover this room? Would you put a new baby in the same room with Clara? Would you convert the sunroom into a nursery somehow? Just curious to see if this is something you’ve considered bc I have not figured out a good solution for it in my own home. Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Julia,
We definitely plan to have at least one more child and it really depends on the sex of that baby when it comes to figuring out where he or she will sleep. If we have another girl we would probably create a shared room in the office/guest room and move the office/guest room into the slightly smaller nursery (just to give the kids more room to cohabitate). And if we had a boy next time around, we’d probably keep Clara in the nursery or convert it for the new baby and move her into the second bedroom. Then the office/guest bedroom would have to be moved into one of our common areas (thankfully our house has a ton of them: a large living room, den, and sunroom!). We’ve actually toyed with the idea of finishing the sunroom (it’s not currently heated or cooled so it’s a 3-season room for now) so it can someday become an office/guest space along with a room with great views of the backyard that we use for reading and relaxing. We’re all about adapting our house as we go. And only time will tell what changes we’ll be making in the future- but that’s the fun of it!

I’ve slept on my fair share of not-too-comfy couches, so when I had a similar space issue in one of my bedrooms, I opted for the daybed/trundle route. Seating area by day, super-comfortable bed by night.
I also have some suggestions for desks in tight spaces if you haven’t solved that matter already. Check out this desk from Target:

It’s a dead ringer for the Crate and Barrel version, only $40 cheaper. Or you might consider this IKEA one:

It’s got a glass top, and being able to see the floor is important in small spaces.
Best of luck! I know it will wind up beautiful – it always does.

Hi again. Thanks for your response on the groupings. I think I have the general info on the designs. Just need some inspiration, that I lost. I am over 50. So, I went from a very traditional style, to a more casual one. Do you have any favorite websites, that sell photography pics?? And other fun things that maybe I could purchase framed?? I get lost on Etsy and Ebay. I can waste a whole day searching. I would like a grouping of things going down my stairs or up?? Thanks again! I know your time is also limited with your new little one. We’re having a similar dilemma because we’re changing our only guest room into our daughter’s “big girl” room. We want to give her room to play, which means a twin sized bed, but we want to have a place for adult guests when they visit, which requires a full sized bed or more. Our solution was to get this awesome day bed from Ikea (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30080316). It has big storage drawers below and pulls out to create a king bed. The extra mattress just goes right on top of the drawers. Score!
Ashley says
You can’t have a toooo comfy guest room, or the guests won’t leave. Or if you have in-laws like mine, you do away with a guest room all together!!! Three bedrooms: master bedroom, nursery & the 3rd bedroom is home to all my husbands musical equipment aka “the rock room”. Lord only knows what we’ll do with baby #2 comes (way down the road).
Congrats on Clara!
Juliette says
I will say the high end mattress that Ikea sells for its PS line of sofas is insanely comfortable. We had to sleep on ours for weeks during our move and actually prefer it to our real mattress!
Also – most pullout mattress sins are (literally) covered when you throw a Tempur-pedic type topper on before putting on the sheets. Toppers are great and usually roll up small enough to store in the back of a closet or deep dresser drawer.
