Nothing like a little weekend chaos. Guess what we did this weekend? Here’s a hint:
And another hint:
And another hint:
And one last hint:
Um yeah, all that house insanity was for this:
Specifically, to paint Clara’s closet.
See, whilst standing on a chair in there hanging the little ribbon chandelier that I made last week (you know, right before John asked me how it was hanging), I decided it was high time we painted that little future-reading nook for the bean (we envision a big cushy beanbag and a ton of books in there for her to dive into). Isn’t it funny how one small project can snowball? One minute you’re standing on a chair hanging a ring o’ ribbons and the next minute you’re tossing a ton of stuff into the guest room, stashing shelves in the guest bathroom, setting up a pack & play in your bedroom (to allow for painting while Clara naps in there), and rolling back the ol’ nursery rug to keep it paint-free.
As you can see in the picture above and below, there are already some pretty sweet adjustable shelves for books and toys and all that hoopla when we turn this closet into a closet slash reading nook (Clara’s nursery was the former owners’ office, so the shelves were used for all of their paper and file storage- but it definitely works for board books and blocks too):
But it could definitely use some freshening up. Check out the grody baseboards:
And the hanging bar that appears to be gnawed on:
So out came those already white shelves with the silver brackets (and into the guest bathroom they went)…
… so I could paint all the trim and that hanging bar with some slick semi-gloss white paint (Olympic No-VOC paint in off-the-shelf-white).
It was already a huuuge improvement. John and I went back and forth about what color we should paint the inside of the closet. In our first house’s nursery, the walls were soft pear and the closet was a fun light aqua color along with the ceiling. And we loved that. But since we went with a soft gray-pink in this room we didn’t want to do the same blue closet and ceiling thing all over again. So we decided that we should try something with texture instead of a new color. Like a pink tone-on-tone stencil. That way it’ll feel connected to the nursery while having a little somethin’ extra in the pattern department – maybe even something subtly metallic. But nothing too loud or crazy since there’s a bright floral curtain that hangs at the closet entry as well as on the windows across the room.
You know that fine line you walk between fun & playful and crazy & chaotic? Yeah, we figure if we have plans to add crown molding along with paint and possibly a stencil to the nursery ceiling we shouldn’t go too nutso on the closet – especially if it’s for quiet book reading/baby chillaxing. So for zero dollars and zero cents we opted to paint the closet the same soft gray-pink tone as the nursery walls (Proposal by Benjamin Moore color matched to Olympic No-VOC paint). Thankfully we still had some left from painting those walls back in December (<– cutest Clara pic ever in that post, bee tee dubs). But back to the painted closet. It’s a nice clean start.
Even before it was dry I got into one of those moods (you know, when $herdog comes out and she decides to fly by the seat of her saggy gangsta pants). So I dragged the whole family to Ben Franklin (weekend family time = clearing rooms to paint, painting while the bean sleeps in a pack and play in your bedroom, hitting up the craft store) where I grabbed some 99 cent water-based metallic craft paint in pearl white and champagne (all the metallic paint at the paint store is $20+ and not quite VOC free yet- but this stuff should hold/wear as well as latex paint unless Clara takes a pressure washer or some sandpaper to it – and it’s a lot less fumey). I also grabbed a cute little $1 rubber stamper with a girlie medallion on it.
Do you see where this is going?
I decided it might be cool to apply some sort of hand-stamped pattern to the wall with that rubber stamper instead of a traditional stencil so it looked kind of irregular and imperfect like handmade wallpaper. And I loved the idea of layering the soft champagne color over the light pink walls so it would be subtle enough not to take over the whole nursery or anything (I also grabbed the pearl white paint in case the champagne was a bust). I envisioned it being this little glittering magical world for Clara to duck into and get lost in a book.
So instead of focusing on how long hand stamping the entire closet would take I thought about how much Clara would love it. And crossed my fingers that it would work. Oh and it bears mentioning that John predicted that it would not work at all because rubber stampers are for paper & ink and not walls & craft paint. Who brought the killjoy to the craft store? I did. But I also had the inspiration with me (El Beano). So I walked out semi-confident in my spur-of-the-moment idea.
As for application, I learned by experimenting with some paper first that the best way to get the paint applied nice and evenly (and not too gloppily) was to lightly brush it onto the stamper with a paintbrush. I used a completely out-of-the-way corner that can’t be seen from the doorway of the closet for experimentation (it would also be covered in shelving and could be repainted with pink paint if all h-e-double-hockey-sticks broke loose and my little stamp method was a bust).
Behold, tiny champagne medallions:
I loved them but they were way too subtle and finely-detailed in person. It almost looked like someone with gold lipstick kissed the wall since you couldn’t quite make out the medallion shape (and from the side they looked kind of bumpy and odd). They actually photograph a lot better than they “read” in real life, which is a shame because I didn’t want John to be right. But alas, it wasn’t the right answer for the closet. So it was back to the drawing board. Literally.
That’s right, in a serendipitous turn of events I tried wiping down the still-wet paint with a wet paper towel and it lifted right out. Well, not right out. I had to put some muscle into it and really scrub, but it came out with a little elbow grease so I could start over. And I was mighty impressed with my painted-earlier-that-day wall for holding up to all the manhandling going on so soon after the paint went up.
And yes I did say “so I could start over” a few sentences back. That’s right. I wasn’t done with my crazy craft paint yet. This time I was wondering if I could freehand some sort of fun painted pattern with the same champagne paint (using a wider brush than the rubber stamp so it would hopefully be easier to make out and less detailed/muddled).
First I experimented with imperfect horizontal lines…
… then I moved onto a bunch of x’s in a row (kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss)…
… then I played around with some sweetly imperfect dots that I made by squishing the paint brush against the wall…
Before wiping anything away I called Killjoy John and Happy Happy Joy Joy Clara in for a consult. Clara wanted to kiss the x’s (I kid you not – I think the girl’s smarter than a fifth grader) and John and I both liked the horizontal stripes best. But we weren’t sold enough to slap them all over the walls quite yet. Sometimes holding back is hard for me, but it’s easier for John. He pointed out that we never regret thinking things through just a little bit before rushing in and doing something we might not love as much as something else in the long run. Especially when said project could potentially take five days and make you see stripes when you close your eyes for three more days after that. Bah, voice of reason = annoying, but right. Point taken.
So because I was incapable of getting off the stamped/painted/stenciled train, to the internet my fingers flew, where I found this cute stamp that I love. John is also (miraculously) down with it – maybe because I joked that it looked like wi-fi to him.
It reminds me of the scalloped fish-scale-like piñata that I made for the bean’s birthday. And since Royal Design Studio offers 10% off to YHLers (including us, haha) with the code YHL10, we’re definitely considering springing for this guy. Especially since we didn’t have to pay for wall paint since it was already on hand and we found metallic paint for $1 a tube at the craft store. I haven’t ordered the stencil just yet, but I’m definitely thinking about it. And now that the ribbon chandelier snowballed into a closet painting project, I guess I should mention that I’m also thinking about:
- sewing a beanbag for the whole reading nook thing
- papering or painting the shelves for a little more “happy surprise!” when Clara sneaks in there
- maybe even finding a rug to soften up the floor?
Oh and speaking of the ribbon chandelier, I still haven’t ironed that guy (girl?) yet. Maybe I should add that to my bulleted list so I’m inspired to get ‘er done (you know I love to cross things off). Or not. Oddly enough, the windblown look is still doing it for me. I know, I’m a strange and mysterious creature.
Speaking of which, we only have one True Blood Season 3 DVD left (with two episodes on it) and we’re sad and excited all at the same time. Since I had fun with the Sookie sidechat on Friday I thought we could discuss teams. I’m Team Eric. Is anyone on the Bill trolley? What about that Alcide guy? I’d get on that before the Bill boat for sure, but Eric is definitely mah man. Oh and I forgot about Jason Stackhouse. He might be above Alcide for me. Hmm. Anyone else painting or stenciling a room? A closet? Let’s chat about home stuff or tv or something else entirely. Anything. Does that sound desperate? Sorry. I’m just a chatty lady who has been stuck in a closet all weekend…

I love that champagne color! I think that stamp will look really cute too, even if it does look a bit liek the wifi symbol!
Amanda @ Our Humble A{Bowe}d says
I really like the scallop design. I wonder if you could cut a medallion looking stencil for a larger, more bold look? I think that would look really great…
YoungHouseLove says
That could be fun too! We might play around with stuff before committing to the scallop guy…

How cute that you’re sprucing up the closet! I love that it’s the same soft pink color as her room. I think that “wi-fi” pattern will look great in there! It’ll look so cute when it’s all done.
For the bean bag, do you think you’ll go with a pattern or a solid color??
As for True Blood, I’m team Eric. I just do not trust that Bill Compton, no matter how well he says “Sookie”. I have a huge crush on Alcide though and sort of hope that they get together but who knows! And poor Sam – never had a chance!!
YoungHouseLove says
Not sure about the beanbag fabric. Maybe something softly patterned (subtly crosshatched or covered in tiny dots). We’ll have to see what we find!
And I agree- poor Sam! He really did never have a chance. Oh and I forgot about Jason Stackhouse. He might be above Alcide for me. Hmm…

I totally agree! Team Eric all the way! I’ve read all the books and am so excited for each new season!

Urgh, Bill, noooo, Team Eric all the way!
I was so happy to see these pics, because our flat was holy mess yesterday as we sweated to reorganise the bedroom and sitting room. It was hard work moving an extra-long-extra-wide iron bed but waking up this morning in our new bed nook it was so worth it.
Love the stencil, it’s going to be so cute.
Crystal says
What up $herdog – I love that you are experimenting with stencils and fun graphics in Clara’s closet. I’ve been painting our dining room which I’m turning into a home office. You might recognize the curtain fabric: http://theweekendhomemaker.com/office-progress-the-wall-color
YoungHouseLove says
OOOOh I can’t wait to see how that turns out!

I just painted my bathroom! Which is snowballing into replacing the 70 year old medicine cabinet and light, finding a new shower curtain, buying a shade for the window (or possibly trying to fix up the ancient wooden slat shade that was in there), buying/making a new valence, and getting a new shower curtain rod. Oh, and I still have the trim to paint. So much for a weekend project :)
Heather says
I’m also trying not to think about my closet, which is the only space in the house that still has the house’s (very ugly) original wallpaper… stripping and painting that might happen some day, but for now I pretend like it’s not there :p
Kel says
Heather, buy more clothes to hang them you won’t have to ever see the wall paper. :)
Alisa says
I’m team Eric! :)
We are finishing up painting our master bathroom today then getting to work on the guest bath. Last night, we ripped down a huge wall vanity and found some icky wallpaper behind it so we are going to remove that, retexture the walls then paint. I saw a super cute circle stencil project that I’m going to get cracking on as soon as we have a blank slate again. Have you thought of doing a potato stencil? That would be easy/cheap (free if you have gobs of potatoes all the time like we do) and would add a little quirk to your project.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh that could be really fun. Seriously considering it!

How about the celery stamp? I think you have it pinned on Pinterest.

Oh yeah I love that project! Not sure they would show up that well with the paint we got but it might be worth a try!

How timely. I just hit “published” on my stenciling-action weekend post. And I used the exact same champagne paint. I went with a different stencil from Royal Design Studios and I stenciled my hallway. Check it out!

My first time commenting but just wanted to say that I Love reading your DIY adventures! I also wanted to let you know that I once tried the exact same thing on a wall a few years ago. I used silver metallic acrylic paint and tried to get a subtle shimmering star effect (using a star stamp) and it just ended up looking messy and gloopy (is that a word?). I am Looking forward to seeing the finished reading nook! Good luck.
PS: your house is beautiful…and I am totally team Eric! He is beautiful too….

Sigh. All of our baseboards are grody like that. It’s such an un-fun project that I have put off redoing them, but I need to!

do the stencil, do the stencil! Wifi it up in that reading/play nook!

Definitely Team Eric. He’s so, so yummy. So far I think Season 4 may be the best one yet. Is it just me or did Tara get prettier since last season?

Haven’t seen Season 4 yet- but now I can’t wait to watch Tara for signs of change!

Love the stencil… Kind of reminds me of a stylized cloud (or a fishscale if you prefer…)

Hey guys, i just wanted to let you know – I can not view any of the photos on your website, ever since your site was overloaded last week and you had to fix something. Anyway, I’m running on Windows7 – any one else out there with the same issue?
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry, how annoying! We didn’t change anything on our end, but perhaps clearing the cache on your browser (I think it’s up under preferences) might help. You also could try viewing our site in a different browser (Internet Explorer instead of Safari, etc). Hope it helps!

I am having the same problem. It is very annoying. I have cleared my cache and everything else. Any other suggestions? I have no trouble viewing any of the other blogs I follow.
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry- it could definitely be some conflict with your computer and our blog for sure- there’s just sadly nothing we can do on our end since we didn’t change anything and it all looks good to us and many others who can still see them. Totally annoying though because we definitely want everyone to be able to view the pics! We wish we could do something to fix it! Anyone have ideas for Ellen (or us) to try to get those pics back for her?
Oh one other idea would be if you’re viewing our blog from work, your office might have started to block our pics (they’re hosted on amazon cloud to keep our site loading faster/not crashing, so if your office blocks amazon cloud pics assuming they’re not work-related that could be it).

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be my antivirus (Avira AntiVir) thinking the images were a problem.
If you use AnitVir, here are the steps to fix it (other antivirus programs should have a similar setting, but I don’t have exact steps):
1. Open AntiVir using the icon in your system
2. Choose the “Configuration” option under the “Extras” menu at the top of the window (or press F8)
3. Check the box for “Expert mode” if it’s not already checked
4. Expand the “WebGuard” item in the left navigation
5. Expand the “Scan” item under WebGuard
6. Click on “Exceptions”
7. Enter this URL in the “URLs skipped by WebGuard” box:
http://images.younghouselove.com.s3.amazonaws.com
8. Click the “Add >>” Button (now the URL should show in the box on the right)
9. Click “OK”
10. You’re done! Try refreshing the page (or restarting your browser) to see the images.

I love the soft pink gray colour. The closet is going to be so cute. Even when she’s 16 and she’s kissing boys on the posters she puts up on the walls in the closet!
I was thinking as reading, it would be cute if you put all the pattern on the shelving and then frame a few cute art pieces for the walls. Yes art on the walls in a closet.
I like the stripes idea. I think it would look lovely if the stripes went up the wall in different widths, and different width from each other. Wait, does that make sense? || | | <<< like that, but with thicker lines and thinner lines. I have it envisioned in my head. If only I could take a picture for you to see ! :P

Do you have a hair straightener, $herdog? If so, I would totally recommend using that on the ribbon chandy. That way you don’t have to take it down and set up the ironing board (even though the new cover is totes snazztastic). You can just stand on a footstool and run each ribbon through your straightener. I do it all the time with sashes for dresses and such when I’m getting ready in the morning. It’s way easier than having to make an ironing production of it. Good luck!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah- we got that tip a lot on that post. Love it! Just didn’t take the time to straighten my hair this weekend though. Too busy tearing up the house and painting- haha.

I’m definately Team Eric!! And Team Edward – for the record.
No paint stenciling, but I recently applied floor to ceiling vinyl decals (white birch trees with brown leaves on top of Martha Stewart Living “Enamalware”). I like the statement it makes, wasn’t too expensive and the room doesn’t need any other artwork.
Britt says
love the color you picked for the stencils! also, as a college student, i didn’t own an iron, so for quick fixes i would use my straightening iron! haha. Sherry, you could iron that chandelier without even taking it down if you have a straightening iron. but if you do i totally wanna see pics.

Haha- we’ll have to see if I get ‘er done someday. It’s sort of like a science experiment for me. I don’t understand why it doesn’t bother me more. I’m usually so anal.

Loving the stencil idea, can’t wait to see how it turns out. Slightly off-topic, but related to ways to make rooms a little extra special, I saw these hinge toppers on pinterest and thought about you guys. There’s a bee one: http://hingeheads.com/bee-jive and I think it would be really sweet on a bedroom door, sort of as a special inside joke. They are too expensive to practical for every door, but one or two could be cool. If only they had a squirrel, I’d be all over it!
YoungHouseLove says
Cute! They have a giraffe too- which is Clara’s favorite animal!

Was just going to suggest the potato stamp, but see someone beat me too it! Great minds think alike. I think that would totally work and you could make it look pretty close to the wi-fi stamp. Good luck!

Love that champagne with the pink. Another thing that looks great if you want some subtle glamour is to stencil with polyurethane so it catches the light but isn’t distracting. You can go with a big bold or detailed pattern that way, without your head spinning. A little surprise when it catches the light. I wonder if there is a low VOC medium that could pull off that effect…
Can’t wait to see it finished!
YoungHouseLove says
We love Safecoat Acrylacq (a non-toxic and low VOC version) so that might work too!

Speaking of decorating rooms, we’re in the process of finishing our little girl’s room before she makes her grand entrance into the world. My SIL gave me the most amazing custom art from this Etsy store, and I wanted to show you guys (I don’t know how your features work for the Monday drawings, but I thought it would be a cool possibility). Ooooooh, I like the color. I am also digging the ‘wifi’ stamp. I really would like to do something similar on one wall in our family room…I am a fan of introducing the ‘unexpected’ into a room.

Ditto on the scallop stencil!
Just wait until you catch up to last night’s episode… there will be no doubt whose team to choose! Season one and two certainly had me smitten over Bill and Sookie’s True Love, but things are going a fabulously delightful direction at the moment and I have definately switched teams. Bill and Eric are truly different characters this season, and it’s brought a freshness to the show making it more enjoyable each episode!! Go Eric & Sookie!
But Alcide is a hunk (which I admit to myself when Andrew is out of the room).

I think the rubber stamper just made the wrong texture (it pulled away from the wall making sort of bumps and bubbles – so nothing laid flat and looked odd form the side). Here’s hoping we can figure something out with a foam stamp or a potato stamp or a stencil though….

I don’t know that this would work, but what about mixing the gold craft paint with some of the pink wall paint? Maybe that would give it less texture when stamping.

Sorry, Sherry. I don’t mean to cause a stir, but I just don’t see what in the world having a reading nook in a closet has to do with “going the other way.” Strikes me as ignorant, and pretty rude of her to even ask a question like that.

My sweet man started stenciling the wall in our office a few days ago. I patiently reminded him that while I’m all for the stencil, and love that he’s so willing to work on it, we’re getting married in 12 days, will have people staying in our house in 9 days, so maybe, just maybe, we should put off any big projects until after our honeymoon. Just a thought.
I don’t watch the show since it’s too bloody, but I’ve read all the books (yes, still bloody. I’m weird.), and I’m team Eric all the way. Dude is smokin hot, and he and Sookie have wayyyyyyyyy more chemistry. Swoon.
Stefanie says
Team Eric 100% – ohmigawd. Blonds don’t usually do it for me but dayum…
What about cute little hand-drawn hearts (maybe spaced out a little more, one up, one down)? I think that would be sweet with the pink. The “wi-fi” stamp is cute too – looks like little monochromatic rainbows. Or seashells. Do you plan on stenciling the entire closet or just sections? I think it’s great you’re doing this – every kid needs a little hide-out. :)
YoungHouseLove says
That’s funny- I was looking for a heart stamp when I found that little medallion one- so it’s always a possibility! As for the pattern, I plan to do the whole thing, but perhaps a bit spaced out and in sections so I don’t lose my mind. Haha.

We actually *just* ordered some stencils from Royal Design Studio last week!! We used your 10% off code, and they arrived super fast – like in 3 days. Awesome customer service!
I was having a hard time figuring out what to do with the window treatments in our kitchen. We wanted a pattern but did not want to pay tons of money for something custom. I ended up getting some pretty inexpensive white roman shades from JC Penny and a sweet morrocan inspired stencil from RDS … we’ll see what happens!!
Unfortunately 2 of the 3 shades are on backorder, so I might have to start stenciling something else in the meantime. You know, just for practice. :)

Love the idea of a gold stencil. I did the same thing with a trunk the other day, but I washed in it olive green over a pink then did a gold stencil. I got the stencil from Micheal’s. Here’s how mine came out:http://thefirstapartment.blogspot.com/2011/06/50-dollar-fix-trunk-love.html
Also, I picked up a gold paint pen and use that instead of traditional paint, it was so much easier to apply. It made stenciling a breeze.
Good luck!

Who brought the killjoy to the craft store? I did.
Hilarious. Wish you had proved him wrong! Love the stencil.

I love the idea of having a little nook in the closet just for Clara. One little thing to keep in mind is that it will be a few years before 1) she wants to run off and hide and play by herself and 2) before you’re comfortable not having her within eyesight. So, just be sure that you are coming up with something that will work for like 4 years +, and I would think the target age for this hideaway will be like 6-8. I have a 2 & 5 year old and the 5year old still doesn’t really play alone, but will do so when we send him to his room (y’know – for “quiet” time or when he’s driving me bonkers!).
Good luck!

I love the stencil idea. The little shimmer in the closet will be add to the fun of the reading room.
On to True Blood, I think I am definitely on Team Alcide. I’ve read all of the books too and I fell in love with Alcide on paper. Shirtless Alcide is my favorite on the show. Eric is a very close second, however.

You might also consider layering colors or stencils on top of each other too, if you go with the medalian stencil. In our dining room, I got a big wall stencil from hobby lobby, and stenciled dimands from the chair rail down (in white, on a light blue wall). Then I went through and added some cream to the center of each diamond (yes, each and every one). Then I stenciled a dark blue flur-de-lis in the corner of each diamond. (yes, each diamond–I was about 7 months prego at the time, so I guess I was fueled by extra hormones or somerhing). It really didn’t take all that long–the diamond wall stencil goes quickly, since you can use a roller. And a closet is a pretty small space, so…I’m sure whatever you come up with will be great! :)

You should check out what I did with that same paint you grabbed. I think it would be cute for her closet…

Team Eric.
I am so anti Bill that it’s strange for me to believe that they (Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer) are married in real life! I mean, come on Anna! Alcide is shirtless looker but oh Eric, you are the man.
And no spoiler but just wait until you start Season 4, oh my.
