Psst- Thanks SO MUCH for the love with our little announcement this morning guys. You rock our socks. For reals.
Well, we aren’t going to make 2,013 resolutions, but here are five of them. You guys know that every year we like to broadcast them to the world to light a fire under our arse in the hopes of accomplishing them (you can check out last year’s here, 2011’s here, and 2010’s here). So let’s get cracking…
#1. Hold On. Let’s just say that for anyone who worries we’ll run out of things to do or rooms to makeover or projects to tackle… this is going to be our busiest year yet. Chock fulla new DIY undertakings. We can’t reveal everything yet (there are some pretty big cats in some pretty big bags) but we can’t wait to free the kitties! So beyond having a ton of untouched spaces to tend to here (like Clara’s big girl room, the front porch, the carport, the guest bathroom, etc) let’s just say we’re not going to stop there. We have some other MAJOR things, and we can’t wait to over-share every detail with you guys. And no Mom, I’m not pregnant.
#2. Chat Things Up. Without a doubt, you guys put the “you” in Young House Love, and we’ve mentioned that we’d like to work more of “you” into our little DIY diary. We’ve actually heard from a lot of you who’d love to see forums over here as a friendly and helpful way to share photos, advice, ideas, inspiration, and all that good stuff. So we’ve been researching how to get those going without crashing our site or spending hours each day maintaining them. We’d really love to give it a try, so our goal is to focus even more on making that happen in the spring (after we’re done with book tour craziness). Cross your fingers and whisper “no crashies, no crashies, no crashies” (that’s our equivalent to “no whammies”).
#3. Be Realistic. As much as we like to avoid blog stage fright by pretending that we’re just talking to 10 readers, the truth is that there are a lot more people dropping in. And most sites with over 5 million hits a month tend to be coded, written, and run by a team of people. Meanwhile, we’re just a guy and a gal with a toddler running around who are juggling DIY projects, post writing, an in-progress book tour, site coding, and a bunch of secret-project balls (wait, that sounds wrong). So this resolution is just about reminding ourselves that we’re only two people. Two highly dedicated folks who love what we do, but two people who can’t do the work of ten people, no matter how hard we try. And this year we’re gonna stop beating ourselves up about it.
Since we like our grass roots approach (we have no desire to hire people to answer comments, write posts, or program the site) that means that we need to be as efficient and realistic as possible and stop pressuring ourselves. We’re not HGTV or BHG, we’re John and Sherry from the block blog. And amazingly, you guys tell us that’s a big reason that you like YHL, so it’s about time we embraced it.
#4. Reclaim Our Lives. This sort of connects to resolution #3, but we’ve publicly struggled with finding balance for a few years now (here, here, here, and here) and answered “how do you do it all?” questions with “we just don’t sleep – maybe we’ll sleep next year.” Well, it’s officially next year, so it would be nice not to be up until 1am finishing projects and writing posts and juggling book stuff along with keeping up with normal things like laundry and cleaning and grocery shopping. We never aspired to be people who work on nights, weekends, and even on vacation (in fact we moved from NYC to Virginia back in 2005 to escape that lifestyle) so the irony isn’t lost on us.
But although many of you chimed in during our blogiversary to say that you’d be happy with one post a day, we aren’t quite ready to scale things back that much, so we’ve decided to go from 8 posts a week down to 7 posts a week (along with 2 more over on Young House Life as usual of course). At the end of the month whenever we glance back at our monthly roundups we’re always surprised at how much we’ve done, and this change shouldn’t affect that very much at all. It mostly means we’ll space out posts like Window Shoppings, House Crashings, Budget Blooms, or Reader Redesigns a bit more so there’s one less of those posts to write, photograph, edit, proofread, and answer questions about each week.
Hopefully you won’t notice the shift very much (we think we’ll post twice on Monday, once on Tuesday, twice on Wednesday, once on Thursday, and once on Friday along with two more posts each week over on Young House Life). And that pace will allow us to spend more time brainstorming ideas, actually doing projects, and recharging with the family – three things that add up to happier bloggers, which will hopefully lead to even more thought-out projects and creative ideas. It also means we’re less likely to throw in the blogging towel. We definitely want to play the long game and not burn out since we truly love this strange little career we’ve built, especially when we’re balanced and smart about how we run this little two person ship of ours.
#5. Be Free. You guys never fail to surprise us by responding to the most random of posts (like this one I wrote about breast feeding and this one John wrote about running). They both got hundreds of comments more than any other DIY related post around it, and they remind us that sharing more than just painting and sawing and gluing and sanding is as fun for you guys as it is for us. Heck, even a random Friday post like this one about five weird things about me elicited over 1,000 comments – and they’re without a doubt the funniest comments on our entire site. Seriously, take ten minutes to scroll through a page or two and I guarantee you’ll be giggling. This blog is our happy place and these spontaneous posts keep it light and fun. And we think blogs that are more stream-of-consciousness than polished-and-perfect are the most fun to read anyway.
So those are our five putting-them-out-there resolutions for the coming year. What are you guys resolving? Any personal ones? Personally I’m resolving to simplify things like crazy (something I’ve said before, but I’m feeling even more determined to master it this year). I have too many gadgets and decorative objects and pillows and gift bags and pens and about a million other things that add up to a whole lotta clutter, so I can’t wait to pare down and attempt to live as simply as John and I did back in NYC when we each had tiny studios without attics and basements to hoard clutter. Less really is more, in so many ways.

You guys are Amaze-balls! I have been a HUGE fan for years. I love how much you interact with your fans. At the risk of sounding stalker-ish I still have an email Sherry wrote me back in 2010 answering a question about your wedding decor. Not everyone is as dedicated as you are and it makes a HUGE difference. That being said I am so happy you guys are taking more time for your selves!! You SO deserve it!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, you’re so sweet Amber!

Love your resolutions and am intrigued by your hints in # 1. Could this be a deal about designing your own line of children’s furniture & toys? Can’t wait for the beans to be spilled!

you guys are awesome with the resolutions! i keep it simple. 2012 resolution: floss every day. :) (i said it was simple.) it worked and i bounced into both dentist appointment’s this year ready for my Gold Flossing Stars.
this year i’ll be having my 3rd kid in February, so my goal is to just keep my feet under me while parenting a 3 year old, a 1.5 year old and a newborn. yipes.

Haha, you can do it! Love the flossing one!

I’ve always thought you two were Superhuman. I’m glad to see resolution #4 on your list – we want you around for the long haul too! Burnout is horrific – I’m still recovering from my episode in 2012. Don’t let ANYONE guilt you into doing more posts a week. My resolution for 2013 is not to let myself get to the point of burnout ever again – I need to learn to say ‘no’ more often while streamlining my office work and not being bullied into allowing one file to jump the queue. (PS: I’ve been doing a lot of DIY while during business shut down and it’s given me such a sense of accomplishment! Thank you again for being an inspiration.)
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Stacey! That’s great advice!

I love you guys! Seriously, I have come to depend on your posts to get me through the school/work day haha! No pressure or anything ;) Just kidding of course.
I’ve been reading the blog since summer ’09 (the same week you had to make the name switcheroo). I have been a daily reader ever since. Keep on doing what you love, and we’ll always be here :)

Ditto all the remarks preceding. Best wishes for 2013–may you achieve even a smidgen of your marvelous resolutions.
While I join those who worry about your burn-out, I totally admire your work ethic too, and it’s a great source of inspiration. Just find the balance! For as long as the ride lasts, I’m on board.
Just wondering, are you speed-readers? How can you possibly keep up with all these comments?
Love your happy lights, by the way. Proof of your on-going creativity. Bises!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Shauna! I guess we’ve gotten to be pretty fast reader and pretty fast typers! We definitely read every single comment that rolls in and do our best to respond to every singe comment that’s a question!

I love the photography in this post. Did you do something different? Love the color!
YoungHouseLove says
John had some fun with a color wash while putting the type on it. He basically desaturated them 80%, lowered the contrast, and then he put a solid color in a new layer over them and put that layer on “multiply” which makes it an opacity.

Hey guys…I LOVE your blog and your work ethic. Don’t beat yourself up too much, I don’t know how you do it.
I work 40+ hours a week in corporate America and blogs are a way to de-stress for me (and give me ideas so I don’t spend hours searching myself!).
I can honestly say on one hand I can’t wait for your next post, but other times it’s like OMG, I can’t keep up with them. EEEK!!! I abandoned a favorite blog of mine because I couldn’t keep up, it became too splintered (several tabs on different subjects) and then I felt the blogger had too many things going on outside of the blog that the blog suffered.
So…that being said, I appreciate how you are evaluating what is going to work for you in the new year. Give yourselves some slack though! Your daughter is more important than giving me ideas on how to brighten my living room!
xxoo

Aw thanks Laura, you’re so sweet!

I just wanted to say that I love you guys! Seriously, my family thinks I’m crazy when I talk about my blog friends- Sherry and John – but I just love everything you do! The way you write, your photos, sharing about life, your projects, its all mixed with a little comedy and I laugh everyday reading your blog. I love what you guys do!!! I love your book too! I was So happy when I got it for Christmas!
Watch out world here I come with projects!
I’m so excited and truly happy for you both- Cheers to a happy and healthy New Year!

Great resolutions!! I love your double post days, but everyone needs balance in their life. Hopefully you can find that this year! :)

HAHAHAHAHA! Those comments on the John post ARE hysterical! Who knew there were so many people terrified that their “your face” habit was too weird. Killing me.
YAY to relaxing in 2013! Do your thing! We’ll still read!

I love your resolutions!! Can’t wait to hear about everything you have in store for 2013! I just had to say that one thing I love so much about you guys is that you really interact with your readers! I love that you respond to people’s comments and on instagram…. thats awesome and shows how much you care =)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Aw thanks Emily! We love you guys! Happy New Year!

I’m totally on board with the “simplify” resolution. We spent New Year’s day filling bags to unload our clutter. We took a carload over to our favorite thrift store donation bin. Along with the “simplify” resolution, we are going to spend more of our evenings and weekends having family games, picnics, going for walks/hikes at some of our local treasures, and generally spending more quality time with our friends and family. Replace shopping and “perfecting” our house with caring about the people who matter most.
Happy 2013!

Such a great resolution!

Congrats to you guys on your new lighting line! I just wanted to say that, and say that I am sorry that you always have to share that you’re not pregnant. I hope that if and when that time comes, you can enjoy it yourselves without feeling any pressure to share/not share/etc. with the interwebs. Enjoy your success and your family and the wonderful life you’ve built in 2013! Cheers!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Steph! It just seems like family and blog readers alike all hear “we have big things coming up” and guess that first, so we like to say “nope” if that’s not what’s going on – just so our family (and readers) don’t get their hopes up :)

Wonderful resolutions! And kudos to you two for taking more time for yourselves and your adorable fam- after all that’s what really matters. 2012 had a lot of really great highs (living through a bathroom remodel, fun trips/weddings/celebrations) and super bad lows (losing loved ones) for us- so this year our resolution is to just live our lives to the fullest and enjoy every moment possible, even the sweet little moments! :)
Kudos to you and best wishes for continued awesomeness in 2013! You two totally rock! Can’t wait to see what the new year will bring!!! :)

Here it’s a day later and I am still trying to guess what are the big cats in the big bags! Are you doing makeovers with Nate? With Oprah? With Ellen? Are you designing furniture for Mitchell Gold? Or CB2? Or Room & Board? Can you give us a tiny, cryptic hint??? Purdy please?
YoungHouseLove says
Hahaha, the hint is just that we’re not allowed to tell. Haha! But there will be a ton of new room makeovers and projects that get added to our roster around spring/summer and a fun announcement in the fall too (assuming everything stays on schedule) :)

Christine says
Ooooo, you are killing me here! I know— A Target celebrity collection for kids, right? Or… is Martha involved here? Or The Donald? It’s The Donald, isn’t it? Throw us a tiny little pinky bone, please???
In a totally unrelated thing, have you ever seen the makeover projects at the Swell vacation rentals in the UK/Paris/Italy? They are a young couple that makeover cottages & apartments in their favorite places and then rent them to travelers, with great before and after photos. Kind of like you guys, but mobile. The woman also has a little online design journal. http://www.swell-group.co.uk/ if you are interested. Maybe you could do a “virtual” long-distance house crash of them.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, maybe you guys will be let down. There’s no Martha or Donald going on. Just more surprise projects and makeovers along with one or two more fun announcements like yesterday’s. Oh and as for Swell, amazing!!! Thanks for the link!

I think it’s so great you guys are scaling back and cutting yourselves some slack! You deserve it! Honestly if y’all cut back even more I’d still be lurking around here everyday like I tend to do :) I love reading your site and am so glad you want to continue to keep it “you”. It’s always so genuine and I seriously feel like most of your readers feel like they are friends with y’all, however weird that may sound.
I’m actually in a similar boat with needing to give myself a break. I work full time in an office and do photography on the side and by the end of this past year I was just exhausted. I’ve decided to only do a max of two photo shoots a month which will continue to give me the creative outlet I enjoy without overworking myself into a zombie like stupor.
P.S. I FINALLY got my hands on your book. I walked into Barnes and Noble after Christmas and I found the very last one in the whole store on a high up shelf. I snatched that sucker up faster than you could say Sherdog!
YoungHouseLove says
Wahooo! So glad you got one. Hope you love it.

YoungHouseLove says
Yes, it’s so crazy! Couldn’t have done it without you guys!

My New Year’s resolution last year and this year is to say “thank you” more. If I have a good experience with someone at a restaurant, store, or other place of business, I call the manager and tell them about it and say thank you. I called our dog food delivery company yesterday to thank them for their great prices and speedy service. They were thrilled to hear good feedback.
I don’t think that anyone hears about the good stuff as much as they should, so when it happens, I’m making a point to say “thanks. that was awesome.”
YoungHouseLove says
I LOVE THAT! So awesome.

I would like to start a campaign to stop bag lickers. You know… the people who lick their fingers before they open your plastic bag. Then they hand you a bag full of eggs, bread, and cheese along with a healthy helping of free germs and general grossness.
If everyone in this country started licking their cash and credit cards before handing it to the guilty cashiers, imagine the difference we could make in unsanitary retail practices. Sometimes all it takes is a bit perspective (or unwanted foreign saliva) to make us see the err in our ways.
You guys should probably get involved. Imagine how many bag lickers sold your book. You sort of owe it to the cause.
YoungHouseLove says
Ha! I haven’t seen much bag licking! Does that still go on?

Definitely hadn’t seen your earlier post, so I automatically thought you all were announcing a family addition :-) But I’m sure the Shades of Light Collection is pretty much similar to that!
Love your resolutions – many of those stick with me, especially the “Be Realistic”! I’ve got a lot of goals – like run a 5K before I turn 28 (15 months away), go to Italy, make a career jump and buy a house…. the last two are the most realistic, but the other things are nice add-ons. Here’s to 2013 being the best year for all of us!
Lauren Nicole says
I give my full and loving permission for you to do less. You guys are my one consistent spot of “me” time every day, so I would hate for you to give up on this crazy little career you’ve built because it has stolen your life. Gobs and gobs of awesome content lives on this site, so if I (or anyone else) needs a little more YHL in their day we can always peruse the archives! Take care of yourselves, guys! We love you!

Aw thanks so much Lauren!

For 2013, I want to take every opportunity to laugh out loud, learn something new, and make something. My approach will be to make it up as I go along and do better every day.
Sherry, at Apartment Therapy you can sign up for “The January Cure” – they’ll send you a daily email through the month of January to help you tackle areas around your house.
The first topic is “Make a list of projects” – might be right up your alley! Haha!
Go to http://www.apartmenttherapy.com
then in the left column under their logo you will see
“The January Cure” (in orange)
click on that link and you can sign up and view the few posts that have gone out so far.
Hope that helps! Maybe you can blog about the changes you make at your house.
‘Cause we all know being a human and dealing with our living space can be challenging – thanks for all the wonderful & positive vibes you send out to DIY land :)

Thanks Koliti! Love it!

Hey Sherry,
I love your resolutions. I’m sure you’ve thought about (and may resisted?) this, but what about a house cleaner? My husband has suggested this to me about 234820348 times and it always led to an argument, with me feeling like “less of a wife” etc. if I didn’t do all that on my own. I work full time and do my blog and freelance writing part time, and there weren’t enough hours in the day to everything. We hired a nice lady to come once every two weeks for just 2 hours. She sweeps and mops which is the biggest time suck for us with the dog hair, and the house smells great, and I’m kicking myself for getting into so many tiffs about it before. Plus, I get to man my own blog ship and do my own writing and my house is clean too.

YoungHouseLove says
We’ve learned to never say never! John’s sister got a house cleaner and then had to let her go because she thought she did a great job at first and then sort of slacked off (she felt frustrated paying her when she was still cleaning up after her). I’m sure not everyone’s like that, but for now we don’t mind sharing the task (John chips in a lot and Clara even helps to clean up her toys and play-doh) so I think we’re at that “it doesn’t appeal right now” stage… but you never know where we’ll end up!

You guys are absolutely amazing! I’m glad to see you are scaling back a bit. What about finding a contributor to post once a week? It’d give you a whole day to tackle some projects during the day instead of staying up late, or it would give you guys time to enjoy each other in non-working duties =)
I can’t wait to hear about your big projects! You two are such an inspiration! and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me see all of your success.
YoungHouseLove says
I think for now we like the simplicity of being just a two-person thing, so hiring a contributor sounds complicated to grass roots people like us. Who knows where we’ll end up though!

I agree with your resolutions! My resolutions this year are to pare down less important things (websites, social media, stuff…), re-invest in myself (health and education), and stress less (just breathe). My husband reminds me every now and then to live in the moment and be present. You can’t plan for every little things, it’ll make you crazy.
Good luck in 2013!

Oh I love the video of Clara seeing her fridge/food for the first time. So adorable. Thank you for sharing. One quibble. I think that such a fancy fridge would have the freezer on the bottom…..haha!

Bravo!!! I’ve told y’all before how I worry about you burning out (how weird is it that I worry about you like I do people I actually KNOW? Haha) and I think tangible things you write down to pare back some is an excellent move. Here’s to one less post a week, I for one will miss it but will be glad to do so:)
Sherry in BC says
You have some great resolutions there. I can’t wait for the cats to be let out of the bag. I do think you need to hire some staff to help….may I suggest a lovely young lady that would be great for some diy videos…..She is blonde, adorable and funny….. and she lives in your house. I think it would be cool to see Clara doing some videos of craft ideas now that she is getting older…..her comments are priceless but she might be pricy?
Tiffany H. says
Oh my goodness. You guys are seriously amazing and I can’t wait to meet you in Atlanta! On another note, though. It is TOTALLY okay to hire in some extra help. There is no shame in hiring a maid to come clean once a month or send your laundry out for service. Even us “regular” people do that (my husband just gifted me a maid once a month this Christmas. Whoot!). Please just don’t burn out, because nothing is worth that. Love y’all and see you at FLOR!

I’m a daily reader (multiple hits to try and get my fix!!), but rarely comment. I loved this post…from the graphics to the content. You are both some genuine and awesome–you deserve every bit of your success. I’m happy you’ll be paring down a bit for your sakes (I don’t want you to burn out!)…and it’ll make each post all the more sweeter!
Thank you for all your hard work.
Susan says
Not that it really matters (I mean, that I be right), but just for the record, I’m guessing that on top of blogging, parenting, housekeeping, writing a book, sleeping on planes, and designing lighting, you also bought another house.
And if I’m wrong, I’m sure whatever you’ve got up your sleeve will be amazing.
Susan says
And sorry to clutter your com box but none of us would think any less of you if you had housekeeping help. I would in a heartbeat if I could afford it. No shame at all. It would free up time for important things–scrubbing your own toilet does not make you a better parent or a better blogger.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Susan! I think since John is awesome about pitching in so far we’re happy with doing that stuff ourselves (DIYers to the core! haha!) but we’ve learned to never say never!

Love the collection! Great resolutions… I always wondered how you all did it? Always blogging, DIY stuff, keeping a clean and organized home, running all while trying to be great parents and a couple. I LOVE that you guys run such a major blog and it’s only you two. I think that’s what keeps most of us coming back. You are my super hero’s and I will continue to look forward to your daily posts. If you only wanted to do 1 post a day, we all would be ok with it, especially if that means more time with family :) Thank you for all you do and for your awesomeness :P
Betsy says
You know I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you guys! And LOVE LOVE your resolutions! (And FINALLY just got your book too!) Anyway, I think you are COMPLETELY on the right track with being realistic and not taking on too much. I was just going back in your archives to find a little tutorial about how to make a really easy frame (found it, btw! under your pintrest challenge – and I re-loved it all over again). Anyway, it make me really nostalgic for the “seemingly” less busy time for you guys with no book signings, etc!! Sometimes I do worry about you guys! Less is more! We will be totally fine and will totally still love you and keep reading!!! Promise!
And, one thing to keep in mind and give you a sanity check… I know there are lots of folks who check you guys out every day and that probably is your goal, but remember there are lots of us who can only check in a few times a week, and for us it is helpful to not have too many posts to weed through too! So, that is to say, don’t feel bad if you can’t post as much! :-) You are doing awesome and will still do awesome if you do less!!!!
XOXO

Hi! I read a lot of blogs, and of course, yours is one of my definite favorites. I want to thank you both for one thing. You NEVER (or hardly ever) have any typos! It is SO refreshing. I really appreciate bloggers, who have so many readers, who take the time to check for typos. Just thought I would give you that little compliment. You guys are great!

Yesssss!!! Sleep!!! :) So many of us care about you guys, so I’d hate for you to experience what I did when my health took a big hit as a result of prolonged stress and sleep-deprivation… I had to learn the hard way. :( Thankfully on the mend now, and purposely sleeping lots more these days. :)

The best thing about YHL is the “over sharing” as you guys call it. What I love most about this blog is that your success came from showing the realness of John and Sherry. That is why I really appreciate posts like this where you guys just lay it all out, admit there are areas in your lives that need attention, and never, for one second, make readers feel like you guys think you’re better than anyone. You are especially cool in real life! (Met you both at a book signing) I really love this blog! Thanks for the entertaining, quality posts!

Seriously…y’all are just the coolest. Thanks for keeping it real on here, and sharing the ‘extras’ along with the DIY. Part of why I love reading this blog is because it feels like a lively chat with a friend as it does a DIY resource. And a happy you means a happy blog, so if y’all only post 5x a week, then do it!
And I just can.not.wait. to see you two in Austin Tuesday!! You would love Uncommon Objects on South Congress (massively large, very well curated used goods store), which is just down the street from Kendra Scott. I appreciate what you guys do and that you do it yourself, BUT I really wouldn’t have a problem if you hired someone to help with your blog. Like putting post though or what ever I think the blog would still have the same feel, and your family would have more time. Maybe look into a student for the summer, they always need jobs to save money for school and you could see if it would work on a short term bases.

Thanks Kimb! If ever that feels like the right thing to do we’ll definitely consider it :)

I like #3 the best. You guys work so hard and do get a lot of readers, but this is your blog and it wouldn’t be the same if you hired people just to keep up with us readers. I love it how it is and always come back for more :)
Thanks for all the laughs and inspiration!

The last picture of John reminds me of Tarzan! Maybe it’s the toes? :D
