Since I’m Genetically One-Quarter Egg Chair… (John described me that way in this post, and it made me laugh because let’s face it, it’s true). I’m also one-quarter dog fur (it’s always all over me) and one-quarter ceramic animal (no further explanation required).
How quickly this post got off track.
Anyway, now that we have a sofa and a coffee table on our back porch, the next thing on our list was a little more seating to round out that side of the room in the form of a comfy chair. Our first option was just to buy the $749 chair that matches our sofa. We liked that it would definitely tie into the color/look of the woven sofa without us having to worry that it would clash or look off. But we wondered if we would wish we went for something a little more fun and a little less matchy down the line, and it did take up a pretty big rectangular footprint, which might crowd the corner where we wanted to put it.
Another contender was a hanging egg chair like this $498 one from Anthropologie, just because we thought it could be fun in a lounge-y outdoor space. But we questioned the comfort factor (without plush seat and back cushions, would it get much use?) and we worried a little about the kid-stunt factor (some of Clara’s friends are a bit more… acrobatic). Didn’t want any broken wrists on our watch – especially with the hard tile below. We also worried about the logistics of it holding enough weight to be safe since John the Builder actually had to reinforce the overhead beams on the showhouse’s front porch to accommodate the porch swing.
Then we talked about an egg chair that hung from a stand instead of the ceiling, like this $590 option from Joss & Main, but still didn’t fully trust that we’d want to constantly enforce the whole “do not swing on this” rule (would kids try to twist it around and ride it like a tire swing?). We also thought the futuristic silhouette might not go as well with our outdoor sofa. Although we did remark that Nuni & Nooni would love it.
We also saw this one on Pinterest from World Market, which might have gone better with our sofa, but when we clicked over to see the price it was sold out. Oh well, it still had that hanging-on-a-chain-probably-isn’t-ideal thing going on.
Then there was this one from Joss & Main, which was more like a boat than a chair, but it did look pretty cozy. It was too big for our space, and the $1500+ price tag was more than we wanted to spend, but if we ever have a spare house in Bali to our name we wouldn’t be mad at a few of these out by the pool.
We kept saying things like “I wish we could find something that sits on the ground like the egg chair at the showhouse.” We loved everything about that chair (the color was great, it swiveled, it was super comfortable, etc). And although we checked every shop we could think of, as well as just doing some random googling, we didn’t come up with anything that really compared.
It kind of reminded us of this one that Pottery Barn used to sell for $1300 a few years back, except that one was a little too warm to go with our cool brown/gray sofa, and it didn’t swivel.
Then we realized we could try buying an identical egg chair to the one from the showhouse directly from GreenFront. We just had to see if they had another one in their store. And as we were telling one of the folks from the showhouse this story they said “why don’t you check with John (the Builder) to see if the showhouse egg chair is one of the borrowed pieces that he’s planning to return, because if so I bet you can buy it over the phone from GreenFront (around 50% of the GreenFront furniture we got was on loan and they were picking it back up after the show).
So we called John the Builder to ask about it, held our breath, and… he said we couldn’t buy the chair. Sad clown. But the reason he wouldn’t let us buy it was because the whole team wanted to go in on it as a thank you to us for working on the showhouse with them over the past year! We couldn’t believe it. We’re still doing that “no way just take our money” thing, so we’ll have to report back if we can sneak them the cash somehow (my mom is a fan of the “hide-it-in-their-purse” method, but most of the team is purse-less…).
Doesn’t the wicker look like it was meant to be paired with the sofa? We’re so glad they work so well together. We also appreciate that the seat is Sunbrella fabric, so it should hold up to Clara’s bubble-solution-covered hands and Burger’s muddy paws. As for the side table, we decided it was a little too much wicker for us (you know my love of ceramic garden stools – especially to add color outside) so we sent it back to GreenFront with the rest of the borrowed pieces that they came back to collect instead of purchasing it – but it was nice to take a look at it first to be sure.
Now it looks more like this in that corner (we took this photo after the others in this post, so ignore the wicker side table’s presence and pretend you see this shiny red beacon of garden stool love):
But back to the chair. It has already been getting a LOT of use from this guy…
… and even some lounge-time from this guy…
I’m getting in on the action too. Sometimes I find myself out there, just gently rocking with the baby in my arms while Clara plays with her water table (swivel action FTW). Definitely one of my favorite new spots.
So that’s the Great Egg Chair Hunt of 2014. Although when you pan out it’s clear that we still have the other side of the sunroom to furnish. I’m thinking a little bistro table under that second fan would be nice since there’s still room to walk around something like that. And of course we still need to build a box to cover those ugly wires that snake down the brick wall.
Here’s a wider shot from further back. You might notice that we parked our dining chairs around the table just because we thought they’d get more use out here in the nicer weather (they’re outdoor chairs so they ain’t afraid of no ghost rain). The jury’s still out whether it’s a temporary move for them, but Burger has already been found lounging on their plush seat cushions, so that’s one vote for them staying outside over the folding chairs that were there before.
Are you guys shopping for any outdoor stuff lately? Are you one-quarter garden stool? I might be too. Hey, maybe we’re related.
Psst- For more what-we-considered rundowns like this one, here’s one about doorknobs, one about kitchen lights, one about rugs, one about dining tables, one about sectionals, one about washers & dryers, and one about our outdoor sofa.

I’m thinking you probably left it behind, but that iron bistro set you spray painted for your last deck might have been nice on the other side. Then again, it might not have matched the look you were going for. Thanks for sharing!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, I was thinking that too! Bummer we didn’t bring it. Although I don’t know if all the swirly iron might feel too ornate with the cleaner lines of the sofa and chair. Hope the new owners of our last house are enjoying them though!

That looks AWESOME! And how sweet of him to give it to you. You offered to pay, he insisted you take it so that’s where you can gracefully bow out and accept it for a job well done! (Two offers to pay is usually my guideline, then all bets are off. HA!)
As far as the payment goes, I have a friend who would return our cash so I began getting cashiers checks from the bank and then say “you can’t give it back because we can’t cash it, it’s not made out to us, so we’d have wasted $XX.” We gave him cash last weekend for putting in our floors and when he tried to refuse it, I threatened cashiers check and he took it because he knew I’d follow through! ;-)
YoungHouseLove says
So funny! I learned that checks could just be ripped up and not cashed when I sent them with insistent letters to too-kind friends and family, so that’s a much better idea!

Sherry you crack me up with all your little obsessions. I loved everything you guys did outside at the show house – I even took screen grabs from my phone and sent them to the hubs. I generally dont lean towards warm colors, but absolutely loved the red garden stool as well. Warm colors seem to pop so well outdoors. Speaking of the hubs, I planted this little seed in his head about a sectional on the other side of our patio and since we couldn’t swallow the thought of spending $1500+ to buy one, we made one and finished it up the weekend before fathers day. Perfect for my man and his outdoor oasis. He keeps sitting out there and pointing at the back of our house with his imaginary remote for his imaginary outdoor tv :) We’re pretty happy with the outcome:

Sarah @ Sarah's Daybook says
Perks of commenting with your phone. Stupid auto correct. I think that since it is under a protective roof it won’t get too moldy, maybe? I think that it will be kinda like a big doormat. Huh, who knows.
YoungHouseLove says
Yeah I thought the covered part would be the best spot for one, although John thinks without sunlight hitting it to dry it out as much it could get moldier than something out in the sun. Anyone try it?
xo
s
Isabel says
I’ve had an outdoor rug in our screened porch for over a year now and if there is one spot were it would get moldy it would be there given all the shade we have and humidity in the summer. So far so good. Despite the foot traffic (and let me tell you my husband is a master at tracking dirt), dog traffic and being outside all winter, it looks as good as new with just the occasional sweeping and a good hosing down this spring. The other bonus of outdoor rugs is that they tend to be pretty cheap (mine was around $50 for a 5×7), so if it does get moldy, it’s a relatively low risk investment.
YoungHouseLove says
Love that!

Porches says
We’ve had two outdoor rugs on our partially screened in porch since last summer. One is a synthetic colorful rug and the other is sisal/jute. Despite the snow, ice and rain that hits them with the wind, there is no visible fading or damage. And even though they may get rained on or snowed on, I’ve never noticed them being wet… so they must dry up pretty quickly.
In addition to that porch, our other screened-in porch is covered with outdoor carpeting. The deep blue carpet is from the previous previous owners, 7+ years old and in great shape, better than the carpet inside the house.
We get bad weather up here, north of you, but these rugs/carpet hold up surprisingly well.
Hilary says
At our previous house we put an inexpensive outdoor rug on our brand new composite deck. At the end of the summer the rug still looked the same, but the deck under the rug looked pretty terrible. The rug seemed to dry quickly, but still trapped or held water on the decking . The mark faded, but we couldn’t get rid of it completely. After that experience the only place I would use an outdoor rug is on a brick patio. But we didn’t have any problems with mould… (As an FYI, the deck was not covered and it was north facing)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks! Anyone have a rug damage tile? I would think that might fare better?

Your outdoor rooms are really coming together! I love the wicker-look– it never really goes out of style. So classic. Isn’t it funny how pets will “claim” new furniture? Whenever we get a new chair or rug, our cat is like “ooh, thanks for the new bed!” :)
kates says
Have you considered putting your table under the covered part and purchasing two chaise style loungy like pieces to go on opposite sides of the umbrella. That way you can lounge out in the sun and when you sit down and eat you can be covered fully by the covered part.
didn’t know how big the covered part is and if it would work at all.
YoungHouseLove says
We did consider that, but we think once we add french doors from the kitchen we’ll love walking right out to the table and the grill. We usually eat dinner at that big table in the evening so it’s not too sunny at that time of day (and the umbrella helps for sunny lunches) but who knows where we’ll end up!

We tried to find a link for you guys but couldn’t (GreenFront is really one of those go-walk-around-and-see-what-they-have places). Love that chair! Your porch is looking so great!
Best Buy has TV cord covers. The back screws into the wall and the covers slides on. You feed the cords through and paint the cover to match your wall. Would that work to cover the cords high up on your wall? It would be an easy quick fix for you guys if so.

My grandmother had one of those hanging egg chairs when I was growing up, and I can attest that I tried every which way to swing in it (usually settling for spinning while reading old comic books, since it was tucked into a corner next to a bookcase full of them.) It was strictly an indoor chair though, as evidenced by how quickly it fell to pieces on my uncle’s porch when he inherited it.
And as a ginger, I appreciate the protective shade you must enjoy from the back of that chair. Time to find a good spot for an egg chair…
Lauren says
Aww this post got such a big smile! The building team clearly got to know your egg-cellent taste (zing!)
I have had this question for awhile- how are you able to so readily link back to old posts? The reference to John’s joke about genetic make up is recent, but I marvel at how often you write things like “you may recall this obscure shade of green paint from this projet in 2011 *link*) How are you able to easily link current posts to refereces made years ago when you’d have thousands of posts to comb through?

I just use the ol’ search bar on the side. So in this case I searched “genetically egg chair.” Sometimes it takes a few more searches for the more obscure posts, but thank goodness for that search bar!

Wow!! The space looks so great and what a fun space for the family to hang. Question (and apologies if it’s been asked before) – what do you do when the weather isn’t so great? Do you bring the pillows, cushions inside? or leave them out and wipe down as needed?

We use outdoor pillows so they’re ok to be out in the rain – but we do bring them in over the winter most years just so they don’t get too beat up by snow/cold.

I LOVE your enormous (covered) porch setup. Porches/decks are common here in Central Florida, but it’s so hot and humid most of the year that they can be hard to really use. The best ones are screened in, covered, and have overhead fans. Ours is…none of the above. Still, we have just gotten patio furniture and we look forward to using it when the weather’s good!
Meredith says
Love it. Wish I had that kind of outdoor space. I’m dealing with the Tennessee heat, and my back porch has no shade. So I enjoy it for about 20 minutes a day before I’m done. Or maybe I should say “well done.”
Maybe an outdoor rug would help with the slip/slide issue that Clara or her friends might face. Plus, if you pick a good one – and we all know you would – it could pull all the textures and colors together.
Just a thought. Happy Thursday!

My parents have had one on their back porch for years. Never got moldy, plus the lack of direct sunlight means less fading.
The only problem my parents had is that their three dogs are potty pad trained, so when they get to go on the porch with Mom and Dad, they think the outdoor rug is their giant potty pad. The funniest part is how proud they are when they hit their target. :)

Love the chair and I think you should accept the gift, because it is just that, a gift and nobody wants to be paid for a gift. ;) You do so much, graciously not accepting anything, it would be ok to accept this. So sweet of them to do it, too.
Those dining chairs look nice, outside! It’s all coming together.
As for the outdoor rug, I have one on a covered porch, which does get partially wet when the rain is intense. I’ve had it for three summers now and so far so good. No mold. It’s just a cheapy ($17) from Lowe’s and very lightweight. It does drive me crazy as the wind always blows it up. I’d like to buy a better quality rug with more weight to it.
Speaking of wind….are those ceramic stools heavy? I’d like to get one, but I’m always having to pick up pillows off of the floor from our sectional and have lost some pretty ceramic pots to the wind on our covered porch. Wondered if you think they would blow over.

Thanks for the rug info Lisa! So good to know! As for the ceramic stools, they’re pretty sturdy. I would be surprised if they blew over (we have them outside year round and they don’t move).

I might be the only one to say this, but I think you should just let them gift you the chair. I know you have the “no free swag” policy, but I think you guys really worked for this one, and it can sometimes come across as rude to not accept a gift from someone (not saying you’re rude!!). It is a gesture from them to you to thank you. If people get upset that you got “free” stuff then they are just unhappy people.

Can I just say how envious I am of your weather, that you can actually have an open sunroom and use it so much of the year? Here in the Midwest, something like that would go to waste, I think. It’s more practical to furnish/design the inside of houses since that’s where we spend at least half the year.
Looking lovely so far!

Yes I’m shopping for outdoor furniture: a sofa that I want to use in my living room. I’m going for that beach, cottage feeling. I want floating shelves in reclaimed whitewashed wood, a sisal rug and a rugged or unique coffee table. I have the Catalina Deep Bench from World Market in mind (ok – really in my dreams – not my mind). The nearest store is 4 hours from me and I’m reluctant to buy it without sitting on it first. So I’ll just continue to dream… Your set looks lovely but my cats would scratch it up in seconds.

Have you considered getting a nice wide bench with a cushy top to put on the other end of the sunroom? It could be used from both sides, easily moved to where the action is, and act as extra seating for a table when you have lots of company.

Looks so good y’all! That chair looks like a plushy hug. What if John built a really cool serving buffet (straight or in an L-shape) for the other side of the porch for when you entertain? You can have a mini freezer underneath for popsicles, maybe a flat top for a tablescape, some open shelving for your outdoor serveware, or set a big galvanized bin on top for drinks… the possibilities are endless! Would especially helpful if you wanted to serve family style at your big table. That way you don’t have two places to sit and eat but no place to put the cupcake stand/sodas!
