In the breaking news department (that’s an overstatement if I’ve ever made one), although it’s the weekend I thought I’d stop in to share this super quick probably-interesting-to-no-one-but-me dining room update. Remember a few days back when I made our new curtains?
And the table looked like this?
Well, now it looks like this:
Can you already tell the difference? Here, I’ll get a little closer.
Yeah, the branches died. Probably because I didn’t even put water in the vase. Oops. How quickly the dream dies. Well, at least when the dream is lush leafy green branches that survive on love alone. And not water.
So in mini keeping-it-real news, our table is substantially less cute. But our curtains still make me want to kiss them. Passionately.
And we needed one of the plates (and a cup) so those got yoinked from the table. So the place settings (for no one) are a little wonky now. Guess it’s a sign that it’s time to un-set my nobody’s-coming-to-dinner table.
Maybe tomorrow.

Just want you to know how much joy it brought me to see a new post when I checked the site even though I KNEW (or thought I knew) there wouldn’t be anything new until Monday. Although this will just fuel my justification for checking back constantly, hoping for a new post! :)
Kelly says
Ha! The nobody’s-coming-to-dinner table could be just about the saddest phrase I’ve ever heard!
Care says
I love Saturday posts! Yay!
Your dining room looks awesome!!
Tiffany says
The bookcases are killing it with those curtains!!! Love it.
Shauna says
Beautiful room. Somehow you put together colours, textures, forms that I’d never think of in a million years, and they all look fabulous together! The photo I’m looking forward to is this room filled with your family, enjoying a feast (when someone IS coming to dinner)! Keep up the great work, kiddos!

Those curtains are In. Sane! I am in awe.

Sherry, you made my day :). Although I’m an uni and I should look forward to the weekends (extra sleeping hours), I grew to not like them as much cause I can’t perform my little morning ritual – drinking coffee and reading your blog.
This was a nice surprise. For me, not so much for the branches :P.

I was reading your blog a few days ago and saw the fabric you were using for your curtains (loved it, by the way!). That same day I was watching a rerun of “Divine Design” with my favorite, Candice Olsen, when I noticed the curtain panels she was making were the exact same fabric! She had a momentary panic when they couldn’t get enough to make the panels, but her assistants came to the rescue and added a coordinating color to the bottom to make them long enough. Just thought you’d like to know that you have “divine” taste!
YoungHouseLove says
I just caught that episode too. So glad they made those panels work- it was so genius to band them on the bottom!

I woke up in the middle of the night to breastfeed, saw this post, and thought I must have been dreaming the whole thing up. I rechecked it this morning to see if you really posted this, hahaha.
Shelly says
Love your room! I thought of you the other day when I saw someone on Richmond Craigslist was offering window treatments made with this exact same fabric.
Autumn @ Fallfordesign.com says
I love what you did with the curtains/table cloth!
Pam the Goatherd says
The table setting looks gorgeous even with a few pieces missing! I don’t know how the chairs look in real life, but in the pics they look like they are covered with soft suede. Your decision to go with the brown rather than the apple green was a good one! The whole room looks so beautiful.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks! They actually look pretty suede-like in real life too! Partially due to the white thread I think. We got so lucky that it didn’t dye because it’s such a sweet little detail in person (hard to see in pics). Hooray for happy accidents!

I love that you all are part of the “open windows” club. My parents also live in a ranch (that they’ve owned 22 years now), and also leave our huge front window open, and only close the curtains right before we all go to bed. When did it become the norm to keep windows closed all day long?
Liz A. says
you know, the thing I was drawn to in the initial photos were those branches…I know that your goal was us to be OOohed and AAAHHHed by the curtins, but since I live in the desert, anything green and lush looking (who are we kidding, anything without spines sticking out of them) catches my eye.
So sorry for your loss…

Funny! I just had a similar experience! I’m a teacher and one of my adorable students brought me a potted flower on Monday. By the last day of school, it was a little crunchy and brownish. Her response was, “Well Mrs. D, it would look like that if you don’t water it!”. Ah, such intelligent kiddos!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, cute.

Hey- I was on a home and garden tour last week and saw a great idea I wanted to pass along, especially in light of your latest centerpiece issue…one of the decorators used hosta leaves/”branches” in a vase similar to yours. They looked gorgeous! I have them on my kitchen table now (with water in the bottom) and they look beautiful. I never thought of using hostas as arrangements but they look so fresh and clean :)
YoungHouseLove says
Never heard of that either! Love it!

With or without dead leaves… the room still looks fabulous. And a Saturday post feels good. Thanks!
Melissa says
I love your blog. It is a favorite! I have made curtains myself for the living room/dining room, the boys’ room (a flat sheet from my 1 son’s comforter/sheet set), & my daughter’s room. I can never find curtains I like in the store & making them is a way I get what I want!!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Ha! They probably would’ve died quickly without water anyway. Branches never stay alive for me in water for some reason. Oh well, the curtains are still fab!
Linda says
I would never be able to keep up with “fresh” greenery. I have a glass container similar to yours on my dining table and just use white silk tulips. They go with everything and they stay the same day after day!!

It reminds me of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland…you know…you can’t sit there because that is where the people who aren’t coming are going to sit….well, can I sit here until the people who won’t come don’t come? Guess I’ve seen the play waaayyy too many times since my kids have acted in it twice at a local theatre. Just thought I’d share that your table-for-dinner-with-nobody took me straight to Wonderland!
Heather says
Beautiful you guys! I love the way the green changes shade with the sunlight. So RAD!
Blair says
Hahaha, sadly they always do die. You should get a ceramic animal to place the branches in! And/or get some fake branches?

It sucks when plants die (even though your leaves weren’t *exactly* alive). I tried to make some terrariums with moss and other ground cover and they’re ALL dead. How depressing. Silver lining? The room looks great!

Clara must be a total angel, because a table runner hanging off the edge of the table in my house would be an invitation for a bazillion “NO! Don’t pull!” run-ins with my toddler. Consider yourselves quite blessed for having gotten an easy-going child. :)

Oh Sherry! This makes me so sad, not the branches, though that is sad. But that fabric. It reminds me how I can’t find a fabric to use for my bedroom for curtains / for a headboard. (not sure which I want to be the “pop” in a bedroom that I can’t paint (apartment of course!) and has white bedding.
So not really sad … just jealous. :P Jealous that it looks so good. Oh hum.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man I don’t want to make you sad. That makes me sad! Haha. Maybe try googling around for a dscount fabric outlet or just a not-a-chain fabric store in your area? Sometimes they have more/different stuff than chains. And there’s always fabric.com. Good luck!

Hey Sherry!! I watched the video of you and Katie and y’all are too freaking cute!! I posted on her site and now I am on yours. I am a faithful reader, and because of you (and Katie) I decided to begin my own blog and document my adventures in home decorating. Thanks for the inspiration girl!!

Sherry, I saw your curtain fabric at JoAnn today for $47 a yard. You got a deal, girl!

LOVE the room and really really love the curtains! Great find on the fabric. As far as the dead plants go, get yourself some Hasta and plant it in your yard. It grows pretty much anywhere and you barely need to do anything to it. It spreads on its own and can be easily separated so a neighbor or friend may be able to just give you some. Anyway, they have these big, shapely leaves that look very elegant in a glass vase on their own and you’ll never run out! Plus with a little water, they’ll look good in your dining room for a couple of weeks.
YoungHouseLove says
You’re the second one to recommend that. Love it!

That’s hilarious! I have a cute set of small vases I keep in the kitchen window. I was tired of them being empty, but I have never been one for fake flowers. I did picked some up when they were on sale and I had a coupon though. A couple dollars for gerbera daisies that don’t die…and don’t need water!
carolinaheartstrings says
Those curtains are just sensational. I totally see why want to kiss them!!!!!
Lori @ Richmond, BABY! says

This post made me have a big belly laugh when I scrolled down to the dead plant photo!!
I have been reading your blog for about 2 weeks now and you guys are great!! Such great decorating ideas and such a cute family!
Marie says
What a cute post. You’ve inspired me to make my own dining room curtains! It’s so hard to find the right length!!
Kristina says
I don’t think it was the lack of water…I tried to bring in branches and they didn’t last 12 hours before they looked exactly the same.
libbie says
I’m LOVING your curtains too! Just so happens that I followed your DIY curtain tutorial (love the heat n bond!) a few months age and made curtains for our slider door out of the same Robert Allen Khandjali fabric but ours was the glacier color. I’m just as obsessed with my curtains too. That print is just so great!
Colleen says
hahaha, I love it. It’s like my half alive roses on our dining room table. They were an anniversary gift from my husband on June 2nd! lol
Glad to see I’m not the only person ignores the minor details in seldom used rooms.
Noel says
I love surprise Saturday posts! Your dining room is gorgeous. The curtains look AMAZING and so does the table- even with dead branches and “wonky” place settings it’s a million times more beautiful than my table! Haha
Susan says
Before you unset it, link it to Tablescape Thursday party this Thursday. :) I love your draperies/curtains, too. They are awesome and amazing how they just totally cozied up that room. :)

I use branches ALL THE TIME. Specifically magnolia branches, and they stay alive for two weeks but you must use water. You can see it here (http://bit.ly/kaE7KS) and here (http://bit.ly/loXeGv). And I know you guys have a magnolia tree!
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh I love that idea too!

You should invest in some faux flowers/leaves. We have a few here and they’re low-maintenance (actually no-maintenance) pops of color. Michaels is always having sales on them!

Haha…nice to see that real life goes on at the Petersik house :o) Your curtains turned out beautifully, BTW!

Sherry: The dining room looks really great. I really like the bright, bold curtain panels. The brown slip covers on the chairs work great, too, now that you are rocking that green and drawing on teal. The room is well on its way to being fabulous! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for this space.
Momlady says
Love the fabric! Really ties the bookcase, table, chair thing all together. One question..are you really all that about the wall color now that you’ve got the rest going on? Maybe it’s just the photos…but the grey really seems to fall flat as far as a flattering neutral goes. And if you weren’t going for grey as a neutral, well, maybe it’s the photos again…but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything for the room.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, we love the subtle gray walls. They’re really like a soft platinum. Very very neutral and sweet and moonlit-night-ish. It’s also in our hallway and our living room, so once we blow open a doorway into the kitchen we’ll see the same soft gray tone in the living room beyond that space, so it’ll all flow really well!

i’m the plant-loving geek who noticed in the first post that the branches had no water. i actually thought a few times, “Gee, I hope Sherry gives those some water!” i’m such a dork.
Tracey Bartula says
Sherry,
Where did you get your Bottleneck Vases…like the one on the table, and the taller one in the hallway? I have been looking all over and cannot seem to find one quite like those and for a reasonable price! And by reasonable, I mean not $80, bc that is all I seem to be finding. Maybe that’s just the going rate? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Those were from ZGallerie a while back (maybe $25 each?) but I’ve seen them at places like HomeGoods and TJ Maxx and Marshall’s for similar prices too. Hope it helps!
