The closet in the spare room used to be packed with things like luggage, wrapping paper, gift bags, and a bunch of other clutter that had to be dealt with in order to free up space for actual playing and Clara-storage (since this is now the playroom/big girl room instead of a room full o’ junk).
So we took everything out (except for the photo albums & yearbooks up top) and it magically disappeared.
Just kidding, it ended up in the guest room closet.
Which actually seems ok since we’re on year three of living here (CRAZY!) and we haven’t noticed any guests using the guest closet at all, so it made sense for us to put that valuable real estate to work for us. There’s actually still a little room for hanging things on the bar if we shove all the bags to the left or the right, so we might do that if we’re expecting company, just in case. But for the rest of the time it’s more functional to see my gift bags all spread out so I can grab one nice and fast.
And the good news is that once the door is shut, our guests don’t have to be subjected to all of the items that lurk behind it.
And after the addition of a few Clara-things, the closet in her big girl room is now nice and useful – both for games and for storing a few not-her-size yet items of clothing (get it? they’re her big girl clothes in her big girl room). It would be fun to paint the closet walls a playful color (coral? teal?) so maybe we’ll get to that sometime.
In the meantime, we just added a friend or two. You know for closet ambiance. Like her monkey (he likes to hang out).
The addition of a few toys essentially creates another play-zone in the house (Clara already plays a lot in her big girl room thanks to her play kitchen and her little table for stuffed animal tea parties, (not to mention fake naps on the daybed) but the closet is yet another little spot that she can sneak into and enjoy.
Down on the floor we have a few things that I picked up for the Macklemore Challenge. Remember the $1 chair that used to be a faded old yellow-brown color? And the cradle that had some burns and scratches along with a pretty musty odor?
Well they’re looking (and smelling) nice and fresh now…
They were both easily revived thanks to some cleaning, priming, and fresh paint. For the chair I used Valspar’s Gloss in Classic Red (which is a paint and primer in one). And for the cradle I used Rustoleum’s Universal All-Surface spray paint in gloss white (which also has a built-in primer).
I actually have some more plans for the cradle (rhymes with bom bom bringe) so I promise I’ll keep you posted! It definitely won’t just be all basic and white for long…
But even though the cradle is only half done, the newly cleared-out closet is getting lots of play.
I’m actually learning that as Clara grows it’s nice to have a few zones throughout the house for her to “discover things to do” instead of plopping every toy in one basket in the living room. It seems like the change of scenery from room to room holds her interest more, and I like that there aren’t ten million jumbled toys in one spot to clean up (by delegating them to different areas, most of the time they stay in those new zones so there’s just a little picking up in a few rooms instead of a giant pile of mixed toys on the living room rug).
So that’s the story of our quick little closet overhaul. What have you guys been transferring and organizing? Any other closet clear-outs going on? If you have a guest room do you keep the closet completely bare in case someone wants to hang something? Or do you use it since most of the time you’re not housing guests and it’s valuable storage space? We just realized the other day that we only have five closets in this entire four bedroom house (our 800 square foot one-bedroom apartment here in Richmond had four) so it’s a wonder we ever had an empty one at all!

I know I’ve been a little quiet on here lately, but I’m still reading every day! Just busy! I have watched this whole room transformation and I love every single detail. Clara is such a lucky little lady to have such a cool room. It is still charming and kid like, but will easily grow with her. Amazing!

How fun to start moving things into Clara’s closet! Our baby girl has that same car track … but the cars always get wedged sideways, leading her to yell “STUCK!” over and over, haha.
Also, thanks for always keeping it real with the small projects too. I always like to hear about the little improvements as well. I love the cradle in white … so clean and pretty. While I like wood-tones as much as the next girl, I can’t complain about covering up yucky burn marks! it looks very nice, Sherry … excited to see the pom poms!

The room is really coming along. And I love the bright colors and bold patterns – perfect for a “big” girl! I have always wondered when looking at Clara’s toys – where is all the plastic stuff? I have been overwhelmed with plastic toys since I had my first baby 5 years ago. I have never purchased it but my kids always receive a lot of it as gifts. Clara’s toys all look so cute and handmade. How did you manage that? It sure looks better that’s for sure!

We’ve been so lucky that both my parents and John’s parents ask us what she might want from “Santa” every year (and for her birthday) so if we have seen some cute little wood car thing or some sweet dollhouse furniture for her we can just send a link. We definitely have some plastic blocks (those big Duplo ones) and I’m sure she’ll love Legos someday (she also loves those tiny plastic animals that come in a tube) but we try to keep them contained in cute pouches and boxes so she can access them but we don’t have to see them all over when they’re not in use :)

I totally agree and am so jealous about this! Our guest room closet has NEVER been a “guest’s closet”. We store all of our sports gear there (tennis rackets, balls bike helmets, life jackets, softball bats) and call it our “sports closet”. Sad thing is we never use any of the items in there, except maybe the child’s life jacket, since our sports life these days is comprised of chasing after our 3 and 1 year old daughters!

I know y’all have talked about maybe painting the ceiling a fun color in Clara’s new room – have you considered doing stripes. Quick question –
What is the blue color on the walls in the guest room (if you remember)?
We are hoping to paint our downstairs family room a navy/dark blue and I really that color. When we are done it will be a fun room re-do that is sort of an ironic “man-cave” complete with some old advertisements/posters for wrestling matches courtesy of e-bay. They are so fun and colorful, it’s hard to choose just one!

LOVE what you are doing with this room !! It is so perfect – can I move in ?!? :)
We had no choice – when we moved my (at the time) 3 1/2yo into her big girl room, I let her pick the colors of the walls… And she picked….waitforit… PINK AND PURPLE ! Yup. In like Bubblegum Pink and Barney-the-Dinosaur-Purple… Well, I toned the exact colors down a bit (of course, eek!) but she so proudly announces to everyone that SHE picked the colors. So I can live with the overly Cotton Candy room since it makes her so happy… Ah the things we do for our kids. <3
ps – LOVE seeing a peek of the SuperHero cape in there again ! I really love that fabric…
ps2 – I also love how you are so classy with the comments you leave for your readers. I would have been all D-Money on them (yup, that's MY rapper moniker…). Guess that why you have the successful blog, and I am just a stalker… hahaha

Here’s a question for you (and possible future post topic?) regarding Clara’s toys. I’ve noticed that most of Clara’s toys seem to lean on the classic, wooden, homemade side which I love and has been my goal when selecting toys for my almost one (in less than a week, ahhh!) year old. So does Clara have those big, bright plastic toy monstrosities but you just store them out of sight? If not, how have you managed to avoid your well-meaning relatives gifting her with these items? My in-laws never ask us what we would like our daughter to have, they just go to Target and pick out the bulkiest plastic toy they can find with the most bells and whistles. And we can’t get rid of it, because we know they’ll ask about it. I even went as far as to ask for no gifts at her birthday party for this reason, but of course my in laws still brought something. How do I give them the hint that we want “classic, not plastic”? Help, I don’t want my home to start looking like Toyland!

So… Jonathon Adler’s following you on Instagram. No biggie. (!!!)
Anyway, I just love that cradle and doll chair. They make me smile. And speaking of rotating toys so they seem new and aren’t a crazy mass explosion – I just gave in and chucked all Jason’s “rotating” toy boxes in the playroom. I had been stashing them in my closet, and he’d always get into them in there and dump them out in my room. Now I have a really spacious closet again! And a really messy play room…
Oh and guess what! I just ordered a bunch of fabric to make curtains for my living room! Pretty excited. It’s this one:

I have been slowly weeding my way through my girls’ clothes, which is hard because they share a closet and because of the size similarities and differences. One is growing out of 3T and into 4T (So I have 3Ts that still “kinda fit” and some 4Ts that “kinda fit” and some 4Ts that are too big still but should fit soon) and my other daughter is in 18-24mo, so I have those and SOME 24mo/2T stuff that is still too big… Then I have to decide from the 3T stuff that’s too small for my oldest what I want to save for the younger, save for a friend, and donate.

Hi there! First of all, I enjoy your blog. Thank you very much. I just have a quick question about spray paint. I know y’all are VOC conscious and I was just wondering what your take is on spray paint VOCs. I’m 8 months preggo and want to spray paint but maybe I should stay away from it? Also, will it off-gas after application? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Argh, I wish they made no-VOC spray paint! They make new paint developments all the time, so hopefully it’s right around the corner. When I was prego with Clara I didn’t spray paint at all (even with a hardcore mask I just worried about the mist somehow being absorbed in my skin if I got a light dusting on my arms or something) so I’d recommend getting someone else to do the dirty work for ya if you can! Haha. As for off-gassing, I definitely notice that things that I spray paint have a very noticeable odor afterwards, so my method is to leave them outside all day (baking in the sun speeds up off-gasing) and then I leave them sealed in the sunroom for a nice long time (that room is closed off from the house, so things in there can off-gas for days and I can pop in and check for when the odor dissipates. Usually after about a week of being sealed in there, even if I put my nose right next to them they don’t smell anymore (and most paint off-gasses the most as it dries/cures) but if I’m worried I can use a coat of clear poly called SafeCoat Acrylacq, which is used to seal in lead (so it can also seal in VOCs to keep them from continuing to off-gas). Hope it helps!

Sherry– Just wanted to say that I sincerely admire your graciousness in responding to critical comments.
(I’m definitely not trying to give negative comments on here, or elsewhere related to your blog, any more weight than they deserve. Clearly, the vast majority of YHL readers think, like I do, that you and your site are wonderful!!!) Criticism is just a topic that interests me (in that I’m always trying to learn to develop a thicker skin), and I know you’ve posted about it before.
As corny as it sounds, not letting my self-worth be influenced by others is a life lesson that I try to remind myself of whenever I get a comment that stings. (I’m not a blogger, but clearly criticism is part of all walks of life.) I like to please people but have realized, like you, that I simply cannot please all people all of the time (and trying to do so causes much anxiety).
You are a wonderful example of dealing with criticism in a healthy way.
I love your attitude of doing what you do with love and having faith in your decisions (while also being okay with and respecting the fact that not everyone will agree with you). I know it must sometimes be easier said than done (at least for me it is), but it is inspiring to see. (I especially love how you mentioned that this attitude can be freeing — you are so right.) Thanks for providing such a great blog that, for me, is inspirational and thought-provoking even beyond the design fun. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks SC! You’re so sweet! It has definitely been a journey to get where we are when it comes to gaining the confidence to blog & decorate for ourselves. Sometimes I think it’s confusing to people because they believe that if you do this for a living you should listen to every “customer” and they should always be right, but we learned a long time ago that for everyone who wants more of something (ex: more heavy duty DIY posts!) there’s someone else requesting the exact opposite (ex: more easy little cheap projects!). On the very same post someone can say “more Clara and Burger!” while someone else says “less!” So if we listened to everyone’s suggestions for running our blog, we wouldn’t have a thing to write about! Haha! It’s freeing to get to a place where we can say “writing about everything in our little world, both big and small, random and home related, is what go us here – so let’s just stick with that!” :)

I love all the random things in her closet! Our son actually has the same little counting beads board on his bookshelves here: http://managingthemanor.blogspot.com/2013/02/distressed-for-less.html
When we were designing our new house, one of our “musts” was big closets (along with lots of storage space in general). We have massive closets in each bedroom, so much that we don’t even need dressers, chest of drawers, etc. to store clothes in the actual rooms. One of the BEST decisions we made.
Paula Kennedy says
Seems like a couple of inexpensive closet organizers might give you much more storage in those closets. There’s a lot of empty space right now.

Oh how I have missed you guys! We are so limited in closet space in our home and I am sorting through things that are worthy of our limited real estate for storage. I noticed that Clara does not have an over-loaded amount of stuff animals that might take up too much space. I wonder if you have a way that you keep the toys to a reasonable number so that it does not look too cluttered?
YoungHouseLove says
Aw you’re so sweet Cappy! Congrats on the baby! So glad you made it in time, whew! As for stuffed animals, she actually has a ton! Well, not 100 or anything, but maybe 20? The funny thing is that she keep most of them in her crib! I’ve instagramed a shot of her in her crib with them saying how she insists on sleeping with all of them and thankfully lots of other parents said their kiddo does the same thing, so I guess it’s just a phase? Perhaps once she transitions to a bed we’ll get a cute little woven basket for them next to the daybed? Will keep you posted!

With so many comments helping you try to pick paint colors/sheets/organization/etc, have you ever considered doing one of those “reader designed” experiments? I do realize, this was the last seriously untouched room in your house. I think, esp for a DIY blog, there are a lot of type A personanalities in the blogospere, so lots of opinions! I want to second (or third) that I am always amazed at how gracious you are when responding to criticism. I am actually pleasantly suprised you reply to them at all, in some instances.
Sometimes you post things I enjoy, other times not so much. On days where I want more, thats what the archives are for!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Cathy! We actually did a “vote what color we paint our bookcase” thing a while back (here) and it was fun! I don’t think we’d ever do a whole room that way (since we live here we love that it feels like us, even if it’s not what the masses might choose) but for smaller projects it’s a fun way to see what folks out there would do!

I love the idea of painting the interior of the closet. I also think I’m going to steal the idea of putting a few toy “stations” in each room. Right now, all our toys are in the living room but my 11 month old is more into exploring the house than staying in just the one room. Great idea!

My spare room has multiple uses. I don’t have guests often, so the room is primarily my workout space. But I have a young grandson and my son and DIL are trying to conceive, so I’m expecting more little ones in the near future. So I keep my free weights, bar bell, workout mat and stability ball in the spare room closet.
That closet is situation directly over the basement stairs, so the right hand side of it has a bench-like area and then the wall slants out (to create the slant down for the basement stair well). I used closet organizing cubes on the bench seat to create a stack of shelves. On the shelves I keep some camping gear and also the seasonal kitchen things (like decorative plates for Christmas) in there. It makes it easily accessible during the holidays, but out of the way when I don’t need them. And with a 7×11′ kitchen, I need to be ruthless when it comes to what gets to live in the kitchen full time :)
I’ve also been using that closet to hold the supplies that I’m gathering for my eventual bathroom reno–there’s an Ikea bathroom sink in there right now and will soon be some tiles for the floor :)
I still need to install a hook and eye latch high up on the door to keep curious toddlers out of the free weights and other breakables :) That’s on my list for this weekend, in fact.
