Last weekend my cousin got married in Brevard, North Carolina. Translation: weekend road trip!
Okay, so it wasn’t on the scale of our road trip to Texas for my cousin’s wedding two years ago (different cousin, btw – I’ve got lots of ’em) but it was still a good time. Brevard is in southwestern NC somewhere between Asheville and the South Carolina border (so close actually, the rehearsal dinner was in SC). It’s about a seven hour drive from Richmond, though we broke up our ride with a stop in Charlotte to see our pals Matt and Kristin. The wedding was obviously the highlight of the trip (you can see some pics over on Young House Life), but Brevard did offer some other fun “adventures” too.
The Antique Mall downtown was one of the coolest (and cleanest!) antique stores we’ve been to in a long time. It also had a really great architectural salvage place next door. So of course we had to share some of the fun stuff we spotted, like this awesome collection of wooden printing press letters. At two bucks each, I can’t believe we didn’t come home with a full alphabet – but somehow we managed to appreciate them without buying any (check out the ones we already have here).
Similarly tempting was this rack of old skeleton keys for $3 each. Again, it’s a shock we didn’t buy anything. Sherry did mention something about buying a ton of them and making an amazing chandelier- like a giant one for over the dining room. How fun would that be? Maybe next time.
Actually, the thing we contemplated purchasing most were some charming paintings by local artists – like this quaint little covered bridge. It was an original watercolor, but the $49 price tag was a bit more than we planned on spending that day (Why are we so cheap? Now we look back and wish we grabbed it).
And definitely out of our vacation budget ($200+) was this weirdly cool painting of a ram-type creature. Sherry was into it, but for some reason I was even more head over heels in love. Or should I say head over hooves. Miss you, man ram.
Raise your hand if these guys remind you of Jonathan Adler pottery (picture me and the wife raising ours).
Like always, there was plenty of stuff that erred on the side of quirky. Who wouldn’t pay $40 for an inexplicably naked KISS action figure? Or $45 for a light-up stained glass chicken Beyoncé?
I’ve got a soft spot for the look and texture of potato sacks, but I just wasn’t quite sure if this one was for potatoes. If only it had been labelled better… (please tell me the sarcasm isn’t lost). Sherry thought it could make a fun pillow or ottoman (heck people even cover chairs with potato sack fabric these days).
Across the street from the Antique Mall was a thrift store run by the local Humane Society (Brevard is in Transylvania County, no joke). I didn’t get to see much of this store because Clara was obsessed with looking at the kittens so Sherry poked around the back while Clara and I hung out with her new furry friends. Everyone in the store probably got sick of hearing “Hi kittycat. Hi kittycatkittycatkittycat! Buh-bye kittycat! Hi kittycat!”
But Sherry was able to locate a few entertaining items, coincidentally both chihuahua themed. Too bad Burger wasn’t with us to enjoy them (he was back at the pet-friendly rental cottage that we stayed in for the weekend with the rest of our family).
Of all the shops we strolled through, the only place that we bought anything was the local Habitat For Humanity ReStore. This isn’t the store, obviously, it’s just their delivery truck.
Though Sherry thought it would’ve looked better like this (she wants me to note that Edward is on the other side). Women and their vampires… this husband will never understand.
Anyways, back to our purchase. For $5 we picked up the frame on the right, with an intricate paper cut design inside. We didn’t know quite where we’d hang it but figured we’d find a place. Once we got back home we found the perfect spot for it – in a frame in our hallway gallery in lieu of a generic picture of apples (which used to live in our first kitchen).
We had to trim the paper cutting a bit to fit top-to-bottom, but it looks great. We love that it livened up that corner of the wall with some stronger color and an interesting pattern. Plus we got an extra frame out of the deal, which I’m sure will get painted and hung somewhere else.
We feel mildly accomplished for not coming home totally empty handed (you know we love snagging stuff for our house when we’re on the road to keep the memory of our trip alive). But since we barely got a taste of Brevard while there (and even less of a taste of Asheville – we just drove through on the highway) we’re hoping we can make it back there for a longer visit sometime. Maybe when another cousin gets married…
Has anyone else hit the road for a trip lately? Or gone to any beautiful fall weddings? Oh, and if anyone has any Asheville area suggestions for us (or anyone else) we’d love to hear them since it looked like such a cool place.
Psst- Check out some of the cute and creative touches from the wedding (along with some family pics) here on Young House Life.

Rezaz and Zambras are two of our favorite restaurants in Asheville… both are Mediterranean style food and and just amazing! We’re blessed to only live about an hour away from Asheville, so we try to visit often. There’s so much to do and see… River Arts District, Biltmore, NC Arboretum, shopping in downtown, enjoying the nightlife, and so on…

I was so excited when I saw Brevard in this post today. I grew up in the spectacularly small town (it’s grown since I’ve moved away) and also got married there 3 years ago. Transylvania county is known at “The Land Of Waterfalls” so if you ever go back you must visit the Pisgah National Forest. Activities include scenic hikes, camping, tubing, swimming (in the river) and the infamous Sliding Rock, a natural rock water slide. And yes, one of those shops sells ceramic white squirrels, I just know it. Having grown up there I never thought to shop in the antique mall, but you better believe I will stop in next time I’m in town. Asheville was a big city to me when I was young, but the biggest attraction aside from the amazing restaurants, shops and art galleries, is The Biltmore House. And may I suggest a Christmas visit, I think they have upwards of 50 decorated trees throughout. It’s just beautiful! Sorry to be so long winded but I felt like a celebrity stopped by our little town last weekend, wish I could have been around to spot you (not stalk you), ha!

Haha- love all the suggestions!

I live in Greer, SC which is a little over an hour away from Asheville. I would definitely recommend Pisagah National Park when Clara is older! It’s the land of the waterfalls and the hiking is beautiful! Hendersonville also has a really cute downtown with a lot of good shops/food. I also laughed about Transylvania County the first time I went there. Glad y’all had fun!

Asheville is one of my favorite places to visit! When I was there with my boyfriend in the spring, we stayed at A Bed of Roses bed and breakfast. It was absolutely gorgeous inside and the owners were such friendly people- and fabulous chefs. There are tons of great restaurants to choose from.
Plus the art is to die for. It’s a major artisan hotspot, so you can find everything form handmade jewelry to pottery to paintings. Save your money to go, because you’ll definitely fall in love with a bunch of things to take home.

I live in Asheville…and I can’t believe no one has yet mentioned all the amazing breweries! Highland Brewing and the Wedge are fun places to drink beer. The food scene here is also great – my favorites are Salsa, Nine Mile and Rosetta’s Kitchen. (FYI- I’ve been to Tupelo Honey twice and have not been impressed. Very touristy)
And yes – there’s good antiquing for sure! Tobacco Barn is chock full of good stuff!

The Tobacco Barn Antique Mall in Asheville is amazing. They have everything from furniture to clothes ranging in pricing & dates. I once saw a bed from the Civil War era there & they def have some great stuff from the 80s.
The area where it is located is pretty awesome in itself, called the Biltmore Antiques District and has many great shops but if you want the feel of Asheville but fewer crowds & an even smaller town try Hendersonville. They’ve got some really great one-of-a-kind restaurants as well as some great apple picking farms open in the fall with all types of fun activities for kids.
Irregardless if you follow Hwy 25 from Hendersonville down toward North Greenville you will find a ton of fabulous antique stores with great prices lining the road :)

I worked for a summer in Brevard! If Clara’s so inclined when she’s older, Brevard is summer camp central. I’m biased towards the all-girls Camp Keystone I worked at many moons ago, but they’re all good. And next time you’re in the area, Brevard is home to the BEST ice cream I’ve ever had, Dolly’s.
And when I was in Brevard, I spent a lot of time in Asheville, so next time you’re back, I echo Tupelo Honey (I saw that up there) and if you’re digging vegetarian food, definitely try the Laughing Seed Cafe. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. I also really like Salsa’s Mexican restaurant, and the Chocolate Fetish. Can you tell I like to eat?
In non-eating Asheville, I have a family connection to this place so it’s another biased recommendation, but the Health Adventure is a super-fun health and science based museum that’s great for families:

Very cool, I love it when you find something old and make it new-to-you. I was on a hunt for some chihuahua related decorum for my entryway credenza on the last trip we took to Austin (with no luck bringing anything chihuahua realted home) but did run into an amazingly huge chihuahua skeleton with attached skeleton owner priced somewhere in the thousands. Needless to say it didn’t make it home with us.

Asheville is a great place. UNCA (University of North Carolina-Asheville for those not in the know) is located there, so there are tons of cool shops and funky places to eat. And if you’re in the Blue Ridge Mountains you must visit Boone (I may be biased after 6 years of college and grad school there). The highest point east of the Missippi and the Eastern Continental Divide. There are tons of great shops downtown like the Mast General Store with vintage toys. Visit Appalachian State University’s campus (my alma mater) and take a picture with Yosef. So much fun stuff to do and the leaves are beautiful in the fall. Clara would love the bears and other animals at Grandfather Mountain.

I’ve actually spent a weirdly large amount of time in Brevard – it’s on the outskirts of Pisgah Nat’l Forest, where my college hiking group ran backpacking trips. Occasionally I would have to evac people to the local hospital, AKA Transylvania Hospital. Not the most inspiring name to tell a freshman’s parents while trying to reassure them that they’re getting really great care for that sprained ankle!

You have to go to the Grove Park Inn and Biltmore when in Asheville. Downtown Asheville is great, Tupelo Honey Cafe is my favorite place for brunch. There are lots of hiking trails and driving the Blue Ridge Highway in the fall is gorgeous.

The Grove Park Inn in Ashville is the most relaxing place I’ve ever been! Next time you need a couple’s retreat (5 year anniversary??) please go for the weekend. The scenery is breath-taking and it has the best spa on earth! All you need is one treatment (pedicure or whatever if you don’t want to spend too much) to enjoy the whole facility and it’s amazing. I’m not even much of a spa girl and that place left a lasting impression on me!

Hey! Looks like this was a fun trip! I look antiquing, especially at the show we occasionally get here.
I was going to say that I think the ram is actually an American Pronghorn Antelope. I live in Wyoming and there are more antelope here than people, and the town that I grew up in actually had the largest population of pronghorns in the world. Maybe the mountains in the back are the Tetons?
I could be wrong, but the animal, though a bit distorted, looks like a pronghorn to me.

Awe, reading your blog today brought back some memories…I moved to Brevard right after college to “make it on my own” until I moved back to the Charlotte area two years ago (Belmont, actually. About 10 minutes from your favorite cloth store, Mary Jo’s). My two favorite stores are Main Street Limited, which is connected to the coffee shop, and Gravy, which is down by the 2 screen movie theatre. Main Street Ltd has cute knick knacks, some small furniture pieces, and neat jewelry. Gravy has various booths from people in the area with art, refinished furniture, pottery, jewelry, etc. and 15% of the profits go to the Boy & Girls Club there. So you give when you get! I think you’d both enjoy browsing there. Also, heading out of Brevard towards Greenville, SC there are some great pottery shops. And it never hurts to see a few waterfalls. Looking Glass Falls is a short trip into Pisgah Forest on the way to ASheville and if you go in the summer you can stop by Dolly’s ice cream afterwards for Clara…Gah, I could keep going!

First – I love those keys. Second, a glass Beyonce is hilarious. After that post I will *never* drive by another chicken again. In fact, we’re getting chickens next year and as an ode I may have to name one Beyonce.
Third, I have a total nerdy technical question for John. How did you get your main site not to post your blog posts to your subdomain as well during testing? I.E. Separate posts for each the main domain and the subdomain. For whatever reason anytime I put a blog post up on my main site it automatically also publishes to my test sub. Que? If it’s way hard I’ll just as my host, if it’s way easy I thought you might know.
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
We actually have them set up as two different WordPress blogs, so they’re actually not connected in any way – they just share the same theme. Actually, our test site doesn’t have any real posts on it, just some random gibberish! But if you’ve got yours connected to the same databases, there may not be a way to keep your posts from going to your test sub. Perhaps your host will have an idea though!
-John
heather says
Hrm, that makes sense. Yeah, I figured because you had a test sub domain that didn’t have your main sites post on them it might be the same idea as what I have going on. I’ll have to chat it up with my guys! Thanks :)

Oh my gosh! I’m from NC (Raleigh) and I actually applied to go to Brevard College! I didn’t go there (heck, I didn’t even get accepted – it’s a small, private college)but I ended up at NCSU in Raleigh, where I met my Yankee husband from NJ. Stuff you have to see in Ashville: Grandfather MT and the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, the Biltmore Estate (GORGEOUS castle-like vacation home of George Vanderbilt with incredible gardens, tours of the house itself and the surrounding Pisgah National Forest (of which ‘ole George owned a pretty large chunk), and their winery. and Inn.If you go during Christmas, they have candlelight tours in the evenings (soooo pretty) More: my husband and I honeymooned at Blowing Rock, where it snowed in April!, there’s all kinds of places to hike on the Appalachian Trail along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and of course great old timey stores, there’s an old steam train and theme park with petting zoo going through the mountains called the Tweetsie Railroad (does Clara like trains yet?). In Gatlinburg, there’s even Dollywood (Dolly Pardon’s theme park. Whew! Sorry this post is so long, I got carried away! I do love the area though, and my husband has even talked about retiring there. We live in Raleigh, and love to visit Brevard (we have friends there) and Asheville (family there)! It is such a great getaway. Biltmore Estate is a really fun visit. The house is amazing, and the gardens are great. There are summer concerts, or Christmas decorations and events depending on the season, plus wine tastings, a B&B on the grounds, hiking, biking, jeep excursions, all sorts of stuff. There is also a great farmer’s market in Asheville, nearby to Biltmore. Big, big local food movement- try Corner Kitchen, Tupelo Honey, and Early Girl Eatery. There is an “arcade’ downtown with more locally owned shops – everything from jewelry to art galleries to artisan chocolates. Screen Door is my favorite consignment/antique/thrift store. There are also tons of craft guild shops and museums highlighting the local craft traditions. Plus, a totally random spot – an uber nice McDonald’s with a piano and a fireplace. Funny you should mention Asheville! We live about two miles from the Antique Tobacco Barn, which I know a few other people also mentioned, as well as the Screen Door. They’re both within about two miles of our place. Both absolutely awesome. You would LOVE them. The Antique Tobacco Barn claims 77,000 square feet of antiques! It’s epic, let me tell you. Also, I agree with the recommendation of Tupelo Honey Cafe – southern home cookin’ with an uptown twist. Awesome. You should also check out Mast General Store while you’re wandering downtown. It’s a family owned general store (the original is in Valle Crucis, NC up near Boone) with lots of fun stuff for decorating your house (small animal figurines, fun signs that have an antique feel to them, kitchen stuff) and old fashioned candy barrels full of yummy candy, and an outdoors shop downstairs (you should come say hi to me – I work down there). So yeah, Asheville is awesome – you should definitely come visit sometime!

I had, had, had to comment on the Kiss dolls. I was terrified of Kiss as a kid (early 80’s), and they were HUGE then. I was staying w/ family friends while my mom was in the hospital having my “baby sister” (who just turned 30 on 10/5- most popular b-day in the world, which about 40 wks out from NYE). The children of that family friend would chase me around the house with their Kiss dolls, and when I was at their house for Halloween, every other trick-or-treater was dressed like a member of Kiss. To this day, NOT a fan.
