Last weekend my cousin got married in Brevard, North Carolina. Translation: weekend road trip!
Okay, so it wasn’t on the scale of our road trip to Texas for my cousin’s wedding two years ago (different cousin, btw – I’ve got lots of ’em) but it was still a good time. Brevard is in southwestern NC somewhere between Asheville and the South Carolina border (so close actually, the rehearsal dinner was in SC). It’s about a seven hour drive from Richmond, though we broke up our ride with a stop in Charlotte to see our pals Matt and Kristin. The wedding was obviously the highlight of the trip (you can see some pics over on Young House Life), but Brevard did offer some other fun “adventures” too.
The Antique Mall downtown was one of the coolest (and cleanest!) antique stores we’ve been to in a long time. It also had a really great architectural salvage place next door. So of course we had to share some of the fun stuff we spotted, like this awesome collection of wooden printing press letters. At two bucks each, I can’t believe we didn’t come home with a full alphabet – but somehow we managed to appreciate them without buying any (check out the ones we already have here).
Similarly tempting was this rack of old skeleton keys for $3 each. Again, it’s a shock we didn’t buy anything. Sherry did mention something about buying a ton of them and making an amazing chandelier- like a giant one for over the dining room. How fun would that be? Maybe next time.
Actually, the thing we contemplated purchasing most were some charming paintings by local artists – like this quaint little covered bridge. It was an original watercolor, but the $49 price tag was a bit more than we planned on spending that day (Why are we so cheap? Now we look back and wish we grabbed it).
And definitely out of our vacation budget ($200+) was this weirdly cool painting of a ram-type creature. Sherry was into it, but for some reason I was even more head over heels in love. Or should I say head over hooves. Miss you, man ram.
Raise your hand if these guys remind you of Jonathan Adler pottery (picture me and the wife raising ours).
Like always, there was plenty of stuff that erred on the side of quirky. Who wouldn’t pay $40 for an inexplicably naked KISS action figure? Or $45 for a light-up stained glass chicken Beyoncé?
I’ve got a soft spot for the look and texture of potato sacks, but I just wasn’t quite sure if this one was for potatoes. If only it had been labelled better… (please tell me the sarcasm isn’t lost). Sherry thought it could make a fun pillow or ottoman (heck people even cover chairs with potato sack fabric these days).
Across the street from the Antique Mall was a thrift store run by the local Humane Society (Brevard is in Transylvania County, no joke). I didn’t get to see much of this store because Clara was obsessed with looking at the kittens so Sherry poked around the back while Clara and I hung out with her new furry friends. Everyone in the store probably got sick of hearing “Hi kittycat. Hi kittycatkittycatkittycat! Buh-bye kittycat! Hi kittycat!”
But Sherry was able to locate a few entertaining items, coincidentally both chihuahua themed. Too bad Burger wasn’t with us to enjoy them (he was back at the pet-friendly rental cottage that we stayed in for the weekend with the rest of our family).
Of all the shops we strolled through, the only place that we bought anything was the local Habitat For Humanity ReStore. This isn’t the store, obviously, it’s just their delivery truck.
Though Sherry thought it would’ve looked better like this (she wants me to note that Edward is on the other side). Women and their vampires… this husband will never understand.
Anyways, back to our purchase. For $5 we picked up the frame on the right, with an intricate paper cut design inside. We didn’t know quite where we’d hang it but figured we’d find a place. Once we got back home we found the perfect spot for it – in a frame in our hallway gallery in lieu of a generic picture of apples (which used to live in our first kitchen).
We had to trim the paper cutting a bit to fit top-to-bottom, but it looks great. We love that it livened up that corner of the wall with some stronger color and an interesting pattern. Plus we got an extra frame out of the deal, which I’m sure will get painted and hung somewhere else.
We feel mildly accomplished for not coming home totally empty handed (you know we love snagging stuff for our house when we’re on the road to keep the memory of our trip alive). But since we barely got a taste of Brevard while there (and even less of a taste of Asheville – we just drove through on the highway) we’re hoping we can make it back there for a longer visit sometime. Maybe when another cousin gets married…
Has anyone else hit the road for a trip lately? Or gone to any beautiful fall weddings? Oh, and if anyone has any Asheville area suggestions for us (or anyone else) we’d love to hear them since it looked like such a cool place.
Psst- Check out some of the cute and creative touches from the wedding (along with some family pics) here on Young House Life.

Just arrived late to this post and after scanning the responses, I think it’s ok to add that the “ram” is actually a chamois (we have a fair amount of those around here in the Southern Alps). I’m amazed at all the sweet places people have mentioned; sounds like I’ll have to spend some time in the southern USA. Glad you guys had some vacation time, although it sounds like it was not necessarily relaxing!

Asheville is amazing!!!
The Chocolate Fetish is pretty much one of my favorite places on earth.
Biltmore is a little pricey, but fun to do at least once. And the gardens are amazing and you can buy some of the gorgeous plants.
The Grove park Inn is stunning. I had a birthday dinner their once, and our table had the most incredible view.
Definitely spend some time there next time you get the chance. There are tons of cute shops in downtown Ashville and in Biltmore Village, and the best Thai place in the whole world (at least IMO) is there.
I’m so jealous! I miss my home state *sigh*

I would love to be your Asheville tour guide! I know I have commented at least twice before suggesting you go there, but I will give one more plug here for my mom’s antique store, Bryant Antiques in Biltmore. It is very close to the Biltmore House (hence the name), which is a must for any visit to Asheville. My godmother is very connected with the Asheville Art Museum as well, and the Blue Spiral art gallery, which you would enjoy just perusing. The downtown is fun, definitely hippy-quirky with all walks of life, and my mom used to have a store there. We moved away in 1996, and when she moved back in 2004, she decided to set up shop in the Biltmore area. October is her busiest month because of all the ‘leafers’ coming through to see the beautiful mountains, but spring and summer are also great times to go, with the wonderful outdoor activities – hiking, etc. The Hunger Games was just filmed there! As was Last of the Mohicans, so just lots of beautiful things to look at. But please go to my mom’s store, you will love it!! (She is actually from Brevard and I spent summers going to the music center.) Thank you for visiting WNC!!

I just read through the comments and see how many suggestions are up for the Tobacco Barn. While that is a really well-known and great place, please please please go to Bryant Antiques too, which is just literally right next door to the barn. Bryant Antiques! Bryant Antiques! Bryant Antiques! I will tell my mom to give YHL a discount! 7000 square feet, 70 dealers! It will be the cleanest antiques store you’ve ever been in!

Oh I loooooove Asheville. We like the Broad St. co-op for picking up food items if needed. We enjoyed eating at Salsa’s (affordable, fresh, seasonal, creative food). Out toward Biltmore there were some shops that included an indy toy store (always fun). We love Mast General too. I swear, one year we did like 95% of our holiday shopping in one place. Very cool…they have outdoorsy clothing, toys, housewares, you name it. Fun. I never got to hit the antique stores there but I’ve heard there are some awesome ones. Great little art galleries and booths selling artists’ work…tons of fun and unique stuff. Pottery, paintings, you name it.

Check out this amazing Ewok inspired dog hat. I think Burger would love it–or maybe not…hats might not be his thing. But, it sure made me giggle and I felt the need to share.

That is such a cool store that you found! Mountain towns are the best for hidden treasures. Every year my family (hubs, kiddo and myself) go to the Asheville area for vacation. If you ever want to splurge, staying at the Biltmore Inn is amazing! We did that for our 2nd honeymoon. Usually, though, we stay in a friends “cabin” on a lovely lake. There are many rental houses to choose from…most homes are closed up for the winter so it is peaceful and quiet with a long walking trail around the lake. It is 30 south of Asheville. It is in a town called Waynesville and the lake area is Lake Junaluska…a lot of people rent the houses with relatives, since the “cabins” might have up to 11 bedrooms. http://www.lakejunaluska.com/default.aspx

Haha, it’s just a canvas I hung backwards since I liked the idea of switching things up so the wall had some texture. Now the wood on the back of the canvas faces out and my little horseshoe can hang out in there. Haha.

Asheville is great! If you go to the Grove Park Inn, request a room in the old part of the hotel or request to stay on the concierge floor. The food in town is great, there are lots of organic, vegetarian, unique, locally owned places to eat.
Decorating a light fixture with skeleton keys made me smile! My mother has started a collection of Jefferson Bowls – large ones, small ones, whatever. If she sees one at a thrift shop, she will buy it. So, now she has quite a few in assorted sizes and also happens to be in need of a large light fixture for her entryway. I told her she should take all her Jefferson Bowls and make a fixture out of them, but she wasn’t amused by that idea. I think it could work, but Mom’s no DIY’er.

My husbands parents bought a vacation home just outside of Asheville, in Weaverville, last year. We visited last March and the area is so beautiful! We drove from Ontario, Canada and it took us 2 days but it was fun to see since neither of us had never been to that area before! We got a hotel and took our time driving there. I’m sure someone has already mentioned it but definitely check out The Biltmore Estates and go on the scenic drive through Blue Ridge Parkway? I think that’s what it’s called. We’re planning on visiting again in the Spring :)

So close to my house, yet so far away. I might take a quick trip to Brevard to get some of those keys! Great deal.
Anyway wanted to chime in that that covered bridge looks just like one I visited in the Virginia Area this summer…along the Parkway. Isn’t that ironic?

I went to the most amazing wedding in August. The bride’s family definitly knows how to throw a party. It was in NYC at http://583parkave.com/ The place was beautiful…the website doesn’t do it justice. The food was out of this world…we ate like royalty. The bar was stocked with top shelf booze and it flowed all night long. And the 14 member band rocked it and kept the party going for hours into the morning. I attended with my family (the hubby, son, my parents, siblings and their spouses/dates) After seeing the pictures of the venue, we expected a stuffy wedding. We were pleasantly surprised….it was hands down one of the best nights of our lives!

I believe the “ram type animal” you reference in your Brevard browsing might be a pronghorn (aka antelope) since the background looks kinda like the Teton mountains of northwestern Wyoming. Pronghorns do still roam the prairies, but there are not as many as there used to be, as there is less prairie untouched by human activity. My niece saw some this summer, hanging around with some cattle, while driving through wyoming. Love your cut paper art!

My husband and I recently visited my parents in Peachtree City, Georgia. We loved it! They had an awesome farmers market every Saturday and Weds. We got to meet so many great people, and even picked up some great dog soaps and fresh foods. Also the whole town basically operates on golf carts, over 90 miles of paths through every neighborhood. We pretty much are dreaming of moving there in a few years. We visited the thrift stores there too. Ended up with a Queen Anne wingback chair for $10 and an awesome silverware set from 1932. It is worth much more than I paid for it. Also in reading some of the comments above, I have to agree that when you find a piece for YOUR home, it is for you to enjoy now. I have found and been gifted so many pieces of older furniture and art that I fix to fit our home. I have gotten many disagreements with painting things or re-building so to speak. But I figure I am keeping it forever, or what I think of as forever, and I want it to fit in with my home. I feel like I am showing it love and it will be loved for years. Those are the things in my home that make me smile when I walk by them, not the generic store art. Kudos to you guys for sticking to your guns, and happy hunting in all of your trips to come!

I also loved the five and dime since they had vintage style candy boxes and so many old fashioned toys.

I have a random question. I was looking through the “Where’d We Get It?” section and noticed that compared to the size of everything else in the living room (including the living room itself) the TV seems dwarfed. Were you planning on updating later, or is that TV plenty big enough?
What’s your guys’ take on this?
I have a smaller TV too, and have been told by several people that it doesn’t fit the scale of my living room.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes! Haha. It’s way too small (as is the cabinet it’s on). We hope to upgrade someday (and possibly build a nice big media cabinet just like we built the console table on the other side of the room).

About Asheville- I live just down the road & have THE BEST things to share about it. Just park somewhere downtown & walk around as your numbero uno priority.
Restaurants:
EVERYONE will tell you to eat at Tupelo Honey. It’s good, yes – but trendy and mostly food you can get at tons of places right now (fried green tomatoes, goat cheese this & that, etc). MUST go to Sunny Point Cafe for brunch. Also, Early Girl Cafe is right downtown & amazing. Both Sunny Point & Early Girl use range-free local organic eggs, all meats without hormones/antibiotics & mostly locally raised, etc. Also good for vegetarian meals is the Laughing Seed. 9 Mile is an amazing Carribean restaurant in the historic Montford community.
-Fancy-schmancy hotel/resort/spa is Grove Park Inn. Antique shopping is amazing.
-The Antique Tobacco Barn is good & so is French Broad Antiques (my fav & they have two mid-century booths there).
-During the last weekend of July there’s a festival in all of downtown called Bele Chere, it’s fun too. Oh! And the Blue Ridge Parkway runs thru Asheville & will give you some amazing scenic views.
ps. Sherry -you MUST go to Minx boutique downtown

Sorry to comment on the weekend (I always feel like you feel pressured to respond even though you should take the time off!), but.. Asheville is the bestest place EVER. We honeymooned in Asheville and stayed at the Beaufort House B&B; we even went back several year ago as a little parents getaway before the AF moved us to the other side of the country. We enjoyed the Biltmore; they’ve added a lot over the years that’s interesting and fun- lots of beautiful land to walk on, too. You can go canoeing, walk around the old main square where various museums are, drive to Chimney Rock and hike… we were married in October, so we enjoyed the peak of the trees, too.

I’m a little late, but I just read Bob’s comment about destroying art. I don’t understand why some people have to “speak their mind” about everything. What good did it do? As I see it, anything that is 2nd hand is fair game to any kind of makeover. You brought life back to that artwork and hung it somewhere where you can enjoy it. I get negative comments from my MIL every time I want to paint something that doesn’t “need” a paint job(like I’m ruining it somehow). Meanwhile, her basement is full of treasured stuff that sits and rots never to be seen or used again. There are plenty of other made-over things in your house that could be considered someone’s “art”. Sounds like Bob should find a new blog to read if re-purposing things bothers him so much.
Rodosee says
You know, I’m usually in the camp of ‘don’t say anything if you can’t say nice’… but in this case my reaction was sharp enough that I’m still going to try and say the ‘negative’ thing as nicely as I know how, rather than biting my tongue.
See, I follow your blog because of your creativity and dedication and can-do attitude. it’s not because I necessarily share your aesthetics in any way. There are ideas I love, there are choices I would never make — but like you pointed out, hey, it’s your house with your stuff and you do what works for you.
BUT… that poor cut-up cutout really shocked me, I have to say. It’s not just a stencil or cookie-cutter art. It looks like a one-off, painstaking piece. And I think it’s sad to hack it off when it is obviously a single organic whole — so I just wish you’d found a way to keep it all together.
So what if it was in ReStore? If a forgotten Dali were in a dump and I cut it up to fit my headboard, I’m sure the word used by art aficionados would still be ‘vandalism’. I’m not calling it that, but I do call it a sad, sad waste of beauty and effort and someone’s skill. It’s not like painted over teak, you know; it’s like a functional handmade teak bed hacked to bits to make a flat headboard. It’s rather painful to watch.
(And I understand creative reuse and the essence of the ephemeral, trust me, coming from a culture that weaves new garments and bed linens from old as a matter of course; makes houses of worship that are exquisitely crafted over months but dismantled and discarded after a day’s use or so; and believes in refinished hand-me-downs for all children. But you don’t cut up what can be conserved; you don’t carve it up to fit your space, in my culture and in my understanding of art aesthetics and simple functional living — you find a space for it or leave it to someone else who can.)
YoungHouseLove says
We absolutely understand there are things that we do in our house that others would do differently! Making a house a home is just such a personal thing. For us, rescuing that secondhand cast-off art and giving it a place of honor on our walls warranted a trim. Now we can appreciate it every day! If it makes you feel any better, it looks as if it’s a student project (perhaps for an art class) which the student then outgrew and donated. Sure, up close it’s imperfect (so it doesn’t appear to be from an expert artisan and looks more like someone who was trying out a technique and later grew tired of it – aka: donated it) but we love it and wanted to make it ours. Which meant tweaking it to fit our space (we often paint furniture and alter things that we bring home to work for our house). We definitely understand that others might not trim it though – it’s just one of those personal decisions.
