Ok, so this random Friday post is 25% about a quick little project, 25% about some house crashing-ish shots, 25% about general Clara cuteness, and 25% about Jewel. Yes, the singer. Who’s ready?
It all began with a weekend trip to DC to visit my BFF Cat (who John and I set up with John’s cousin Travis and then they got married and had two kiddos- so yes I’m now related to my BFF). She, Travis, and their cute kiddos Elsa and Edison live in Arlington, Virginia and took us into the city to check out the National Aquarium in DC (John’s sister Katie along with her two sons John and Ben and her hubby Martin came too). The aquarium was definitely a hit with the kiddos. The baby alligators might have been the highlight…
No wait, it was the exhibit with a Nemo and a Dory fish (they looked just like them). Clara and Elsa were especially enamored.
Bam! Then we saw Jewel. She was doing this book signing thing a block or two away from the aquarium, so we were just walking by and we’re all “wait, isn’t that Jewel?” and then I had to use everything in me not to start singing “Whooooo willll saaaayyyaaayyaayyyyve your soul?” – but I successfully resisted. Whew. I just snapped this picture and we kept moving. But it was pretty funny and random. She looked sweet, btw.
Then we went to Gravely Point, which is this awesome spot where giant planes fly right. over. you (they land within eyeshot at the airport, so they’re really low and loud). Yes, the kids went wild for it.
As in – all out crazy every time. It was adorable. There was fist pumping.
Elsa and Clara are BFFs. Which completely melts my heart. I mean, my kid is going to marry my other BFF’s son (yes, we’re talking about Will Bower here) and she has a for-life bestie in Elsa. Life is good. And completely unpredictable. Who woulda thought we’d successfully set up John’s cousin with my best friend and then I’d meet another real-deal-holyfield friend through blogging. Random, I tell ya. In the best possible way.
And then there’s the fact that Clara is here on this earth (miracle!) and that John and I randomly met in NYC at a job I loved and John loathed (he had actually applied to go back to school – so I’m forever grateful that he didn’t leave NYC forever before I got my mitts on him).
Sorry, this post is especially meandering today. Like a long dirt road in the country. And I might have some dirt in my eye. Sniffle. Anyway, back to the house related stuff. Tangent over.
Check out this awesome chalkboard wall that Cat has in their playroom. She added magnetic paint before the chalkboard paint, so magnets also work on the wall. Clara was in animal-magnet heaven.
And this was a cute Craigslist find that Cat picked up for Edison’s room. One of those expensive Pottery Barn book racks, except it was cheap-o thanks to being scored secondhand through sir Craig and his list. All hail craig and his list.
Is this post getting weirder? Wait, don’t answer that.
Look at this pretty original chandelier that they inherited in their dining room. The best part? Cat’s not that into it. So once they buy a new chandelier I get it. Picture me rubbing my hands together maniacally. So excited about that…
You can see more sneak peeks of her house here from this older BFF-visiting post. We really need to properly House Crash her, but there are always a million kids running around (oops they’re ours). Haha. Someday!
And in organizing news… look at Cat’s photo albums. Doesn’t that make you green with envy slash “want-to-go-to-there”-ness? I want my family albums to be that organized. Cat said all it took was grabbing a bunch of the same type of album and pulling out all of her pics from mismatched piles, boxes, and old tattered albums and loading them in with some idea of chronology (but not being too anal, which is key so this doesn’t take five million years). Update: due to a bunch of folks asking, Cat clued me in on where she gets her albums: Target!
Ok, now here’s the mini-project portion of this post. See this fireplace in Cat’s living room? Cat called me up a few weeks ago and said “Darn you Petersik!” Seriously, I answered the phone and that was her first sentence. Turns out she was staring up at the wall, realized she wanted some candle sconces to beef up the mirror over the mantel and to fill that blank space on either side of it, and then did some googling and found the exact sconces she wanted. Only problem? They were on our site and were now sold out. Haha. Seriously, her google search took her to this image in this old post of ours.
So she was calling to lament the sconces that got away. But then I revealed that we never found a spot for them in our new house and they were just sitting in our piles-o-stuff playroom and I insisted that we bring them up to her house and hang them for her during the aquarium-trip weekend. Of course she refused my birthday sconces a few times, but $herdog is a stubborn girl. She always wins…
We even packed anchors and screws and our drill with the sconces in the car. Haha. No excuses for not getting those on the wall while we were there. Only thing I didn’t pack? Two matching candles. Oops. Pretend there’s not a shorter one on the left and a taller one on the right.
Oh and isn’t that little leaf wreath cute? Cat’s a crafty gal. She DIYed that baby. She told me where she got the kit but I forget. Maybe she’ll stop in with the info. I did a homemade leaf thing for our cousin’s bridal shower last fall though, so this post might help anyone who wants to make a whole mess o’ paper leaves. And speaking of DIY, Cat had some pretty leftover wrapping paper and decided to use it to cover those stacks of books on the mantel. I was in love. The paper was so soft and glow-ey. Just imagine that candle sconce all lit and flickering. Pretty, right?
Then after a marathon fun-fest weekend full of fish-watching and Jewel-watching and plane-watching and sconce-hanging we loaded ourselves into the car and drove back to Richmond. The kiddos were sufficiently exhausted.
So there you have one of those random Friday posts full of smorgasbord and stream of consciousness. Hope it was as good for you as it was for me. Do you guys have any road trips planned? Have you ever seen a famous singer while out on a walk and said “wait a minute isn’t that ____?” and then wanted to sing their song to them? Have you ever packed things like screws and a drill into the car in the hopes of hanging something in someone else’s house? Isn’t it weird to drill into someone else’s wall? It’s kind of like driving someone else’s car or wearing someone else’s clothes. It’s thrilling but a little scary since you don’t want to ruin anything. Haha.

oh that fist pumping did make me grin! :) i’d like to say two things – one, magnetic paint?! GENIUS i love that, didn’t even know it existed… two, your BFF Cat – does she have a crystal ball on her mantel? if so I must have one, it looks lovely there
oh, and three (i know, i said 2 things lol) This Craig fella, who is he? and does anyone know if we have a UK version, I think he sounds like my kinda guy!
loved this post Sherry, it was a good ‘un!

It’s this cool glass orb in a metal stand. So cool right! I think she got it years ago on the job (she worked for Country Home Magazine and got all sorts of treasures while working there). Haha- and craigslist needs to get to the UK if he’s not there yet! Haha.

Speaking of rockin’ Pottery Barn find via “secondhand”, my mother is a self-proclaimed “curb-finder”. She lives in a really nice old neighborhood that have a ton of people with expensive tastes that always seem to place their in-really-good-condition-should-have-Goodwill’d-it stuff right on the curb!
So longer story short, I had told my mom a few weeks ago that I was looking for a large rug to put under our dining room table. Last week, she drove by a neighbors house and there was a huge rug, rolled-up, with plastic under the end of it to keep it clean, standing up at the end of the driveway with some other stuff. My mom decided to just grab it without even looking to see if anything was wrong with it and loaded it into the back of my dad’s pickup and brought it over. We unrolled it to find a mint condition 8×10′ Pottery Barn rug that looks like Berber. It is perfect for what we were needing and FREE!

So OF COURSE I love this post for the aquarium reference :)
I also love the book covers and I will now put a variation of that on my to do list. I just hate that my books arent cohesive at all….they just look a hot mess.
And lastly, seeing Jewel at her book signing….did that get you giddy thinking thats what you will be doing so soon?

P.S. – I totally convinced my BF to take a mini vaca w/ me to MN to get your book signed…he doesn’t see what the big deal is, but I’m uber excited, not like I’m counting down the days or anything ;)

Yes, I want to do a fall little mantel thing soon! Woot! Can’t wait to see you at the signing.

Out in L.A. I see random celebs from time to time. Met Brad Pitt when he was filming some little joke for the Tonight Show (which is down the street from my office.) I can say he was short, but I also looked kind of schlubby. Also, I’ve seen Wayne Knight (Newman from Seinfeld) at the grocery store and made a complete idiot of myself when I saw Kristin S from the Daily Show at the grocery store too.
Hope you had fun in D.C.! And at this point, my daughter has a couple guys thru the family that she might be “engaged” to. We’ll see how it all works out.

Kids or no kids, your day in DC was my ideal day in DC…my parents used to take us to Gravely Point with a picnic and some baseball gloves and frisbees and let us run wild…I can’t wait to have kids just so that I can take them there and to the aquarium. This is one of my favorite posts you’ve written in a while…I love all your posts but this one just…love! :)

Love this post! I saw Matt Czuchry (Logan on Gilmore Girls and now I think he is on The Good Wife) while in line for the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland. My friend didn’t believe it was him at first, but I was positive. So then we managed to be creepy stalkers and followed him and his group (I think it was his sister and her cute little family) over to the Dumbo ride. They got on the ride before our turn, so when we got to go I ran to the Dumbo he had been sitting in. Just so my butt could sit where he sat. Ridiculous, right?

Although I’ve never hung anything on anyone else’s wall, I did rearrange and restyle my sister’s living room while housesitting for her a few years ago. She and her family came back from vacation and were only slightly weirded out.
It really did look and function better.
And while flying back from NYC to Portland this summer, I noticed that Carrie Brownstein of “Portlandia” was sitting up in first class. And the next day she and Fred Armisen were sitting right next to us in a restaurant. I felt like a total stalker, but I took a picture of my father and son making sure they were visible in the background.
And lastly, nice Liz Lemon reference.

We did something similar with organizing our photos but I have been struggling with what to do with the albums that are floating all over the living room! A basket! What a genius idea – why didn’t I think of that?! Off to buy one after work!
Also, hoping your BFF drops in to share more infomrationa bout the albums (brand, where she bought them, etc). I could use more and I think they discontinued the ones I had been using.

No singers, but since Denver has like 5 professional sports teams we randomly see athletes here and there. Well be we, I mean my bf sees them and then points them out. Fun fact, I’ve cut Ed McCaffrey’s hair a few times, and my bf sat just two seats away from Birdman (the recently released basketball player whose undercurrent ly involved in a child porn investigation, not the rapper). I’m just glad the circus that is Tim Tebow has left town.

I need to take Cat’s advice about not being too anal about my photos being in exact chronological order. I have about 5 photo boxes to go through and put in albums but it is taking me forever because they are mixed up and I get frustrated fast when I can’t figure out which year a photo is from. Ahhh! I should just generally sort them and put them in albums and be done with it! :P

We’re going to the Oregon Coast Aquarium for my son’s 3rd birthday this weekend, which is about 2 1/2 hours away and next weekend we’re driving 1 1/2hrs to go apple picking! I haven’t seen famous singers, but just this Monday, I saw Julia Stiles (!!!!) in Copley Square (Boston) when I was heading to meet my in-laws for dinner after work (she’s in town filming The Makeover). I was at a convention in Verona, NY a few years ago. Alice Cooper was playing there at the time. During the day I got into the elevator and there was a gentleman in there who started talking to me about slot machines (we were in a casino). I answered and then asked if he was Alice Cooper (he was sans makeup). He was and he ended up inviting me to his concert that night…not really but I did end up running into him a couple more times over the next 24 hours.

Steven Tyler = perpetual old man crush. Him and Richard Gere. I don’t get it, don’t try. This comment made me smile though. A neighbor where I grew up (who is British and Sri Lankan and gorgeous) and her family just ran into him in Hawaii. He told her husband, “Good job, your wife is hot.” She’s glowing because he called her hot. Haha. (she is).

When I was younger, our family used to go to Toronto airport, take a picnic, watch planes take-off and land from the roof of old Terminal 1, people watch inside, check every phone for forgotten change, and hope to see some dogs arriving (not sure why seeing a dog in a crate at the airport was cool – I guess it was just unusual). When I tell people about this, some give me a pity look because obviously we were too poor to afford other real entertainment. But they were great times and something that my brothers and I remember very fondly. Years later, my brother and I went to pick up my parents, and went early with a picnic for the roof!
YoungHouseLove says
That sounds like tons of fun! We used to go feed the ducks old crackers and stale bread and skip rocks at the lake and watch smaller planes take off and land in an old field in NJ. Quality time with the family!

I once sold socks to a woman who was accompanied by Lyle Lovett. I was very excited but this was pre-Julia Roberts, so no one else in the store knew who he was.
And I locked eyes with Julia Louis Dreyfuss at the farmer’s market in Santa Barbara. I was waiting for my sister when I noticed her. I kept staring at her until she turned around and saw me. I guess she was waiting for me to say something or ask for an autograph, but I was so embarrassed that I gave her what was probably a really sickly grin and ran off to find my sister. She is a tiny little person.
Oh, and I saw the guy who played Hercules, Kevin Sorbo, once in a Target parking lot in Henderson, NV and Evander Holyfield waiting to cross the street on the Strip in Las Vegas (neither of them are tiny little people). For some reason, I never think of Hercules needing to shop at Target. I was working in Las Vegas temporarily and it was when they were filming Ocean’s Eleven (oh, I’m old), but I never saw Matt, George or Brad.

The hub finished *The Sound and the Fury* for grad school last week and wrote a lovely stream of consciousness piece. He shared with me, a bit uncertain, as it wasn’t his usual style. I loved it. I prefer it.
Today’s post was great!
It makes me want to write a DIY Year One- of our lives complete with photos for our one year anniversary. (Yes, I’ll give you an inspiration credit citing if you feel it’s best :-)
In one year since we met (on 10/03) we’ve: become engaged and married within 30 days of meeting, combined houses, donated more than we can count, become a “family” (his son was almost 13 when we met-engaged-married), taken five major trips, moved across the country, quit a job (me), started grad school (him), become pregnant (almost 33.5 weeks!), dealt with insane amounts of paperwork and would-you-believe-it realities (thanks to life after being-hit-by-car and having a Trust that guides parts of finances), and more.
As he said last night, “we’ve gotten closer where others might have been blown apart” to which I responded, “like confetti!”
Made me think of you both. DIYing through life. How things can bring us closer or tear us apart, depending on what we choose, how we communicate, etc.
Oh…and our road trip is short.. just down to SLC for the City Creek Bike Sprint tomorrow morning (with a way cushy start of 10 am!).

We inherited a similar chandelier from my MIL and I hated it (it is just way too opulent for our open formal dining room that you see right when you walk in our door). My bf doesn’t want to sell it. I did some research and found out it’s actually Waterford and worth around 10k…so it looks like it’s staying for awhile. Haha. I’m at least trying to convince him that we should put it in our foyer instead. 20 ft entryway ceiling and current builder grade fixture is begging for an upgrade! BTW, Baltimore and Camden (Philly) aquariums are both worth checking out as well!

I heart this post! Sure it’s random and nomadic, but that’s life! In college my friends and I wanted to meet Viggo Mortensen (we were all about LOTR) at his art opening and were disappointed when he wasn’t there. Once when I was leaving a bar I literally ran smack into Henry Rollins. He was really short. It’s funny how much smaller famous people are in real life.
Also, not a personal celeb spotting story, but my aunt and my cousin ran into Lil’ Jon at a coffee shop in Paris. Super random!
