Ah, the rugs in our kitchen. They were $34 from The Company Store ages ago (maybe 2008?). They originally lived in our first house’s kitchen and third bedroom, and they’re awesomely durable and neutral – but they don’t really do anything for the new kitchen (in person they’re a little too small and sort of clash with the avocado walls since they’re so honey-oak-colored). So “find a new kitchen rug (or rugs)” has been on our lingering kitchen to-do list for the last couple of months.
We decided to tackle this rug situation – well, more like it decided to tackle us – on a recent stop at HomeGoods. Sherry found a pile of awesome 5 x 7′ flat weave options for just $49 each. We saw potential in a lot of them so we lugged them home for what Sherry cheerily dubbed our “kitchen rug fashion show.” As for me, I prepared myself for lots of rug moving – so a disclaimer upfront that the rugs in the pics to follow aren’t perfectly placed, nor are they wrinkle or tag-free (we just threw them down, gauged our reactions, and snapped pics for ya).
In an attempt to spare myself a lot of work, I suggested we start with what I thought was guaranteed to work: a bold black and white stripe. In my head this was the perfect solution. It became quickly clear that I was wrong.
Even though the pattern was simple, the high contrast black versus white was very visually demanding. We thought that eliminating one of them (in the cooking area) might help, since we’d been leaning towards just having a rug on the fireplace half of the room anyways (to define that area is the cozy living spot in the room). But…
… that change wasn’t enough to save the black & white rug as an option. In person it was even crazier/more chaotic to look at. But it did confirm that we wanted just one rug in the room (in the living part) since they would have to run different directions to make the most sense – and almost any rug would look odd running length-wise in the cooking area and width-wise in the casual fireplace zone. Eliminating the competing pattern (since they’d be oriented in different directions) also helped to reinforce that the fireplace side was a living / relaxing space.
Our next try was with a similar option HomeGoods had – a more subdued gray on white stripe (I wasn’t ready to give up on stripes).
We did like the gray because it sort of carried the gray backsplash over from the other side of the room. But I think it put the nail in the coffin for large stripes. It was still too high contrast for the space and felt sort of cheap and just plain wrong in person.
With my theory about the stripes sufficiently proved wrong, Sherry suggested that we try her favorite rug. It was an ikat-ish diamond pattern that was made up of some of our favorite colors. She also thought the dark colors would keep it from being too jarring against the dark floor.
It did seem to work very nicely with the dining room curtains, which are visible from one view (check out Sherry’s hastily draped dishcloth pillow cover in the corner to help tie things in) and it helped her visualize the potential color scheme of that side of the room.
But ultimately this rug got the axe too. The pattern felt too distracting – perhaps because it was still relatively large scale – and the colors felt a bit circus-y in real life (it actually photographs better here than it looked in person). Sherry was bummed, especially because she had found a matching runner for the laundry room (which also has the same color scheme as the kitchen and is attached to the other side of the room).
By this point we had tried our entire bounty of HomeGoods rugs (which all got returned), and were starting to be convinced that a bold pattern was not the way to go. So we turned to our stash of existing rugs that are not currently “in service” around our house (aka: shoved in the playroom to use either in rooms we haven’t touched like the sunroom or playroom – or to be yard saled/craigslisted eventually) to see if any of them might work – even though we knew that would be a long shot. For instance, here’s the Pottery Barn rug that used to live in our office:
Meh. We deemed it too light – and the off-white color just looked dirty in comparison to the white counters and cabinets in the room. Back to the closet for you!
And even though we were over the in-your-face patterns, we also gave the old Pottery Barn “Clara” rug from our old den a shot – just to be sure.
We still love it as a rug, but the pattern and color are totally wrong for our kitchen. Once again (like the original jute rugs from The Company Store) the honey-wheat tones were all wrong with the soft avocado walls (which we hear can read differently on many monitors, so our apologis if they look yellow or neon green – they’re really the color of the inside of an avocado- very light and subtle). Sorry Clara rug.
At this point we started pilfering things from other rooms, like our all time favorite yellow moorish Pottery Barn rug from the guest room.
We were actually feeling this one a little bit. We liked that the sophisticated pattern wasn’t too high contrast. It didn’t scream for attention like a lot of the other larger-scale rugs had.
Our only hang up was that the yellow clashed with the walls. Even though we love the other yellow accents around the room, it just wasn’t working (it was a little too orange in person while the walls have green undertones). Of all of the colors we tried, we actually thought that something gray could be the most natural for the space (it’s not clashy with the walls, it would tie into the wall of tile on the other side of the room, etc).
The yellow rug is still living in the kitchen just-for-now, but we’ve both agreed it’s not permanent. So I guess we still have more rug shuffling in our future, but at least all the shuffling in our past wasn’t a waste. We learned some important things about what we’re looking for: mainly a light, subtle not-too-large-scale pattern – possibly in gray to reference the backsplash and bring that over into the fireplace side of the room. We actually used this criteria to hunt down another rug that we think will be perfect. Cue the choir of angels. The only sad thing is that it’s on order – but once it arrives and we have photos to share, we’ll be able to tell you whether or not we were on the right track. Fingers crossed!
In the meantime, what did you guys do this weekend? Any rug shopping? I hope there was lots of family time too. We got to log some of that – and although four children under the age of three sounds like a recipe for disaster, it was great to have everyone together.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the black and white stripes and the grey and white! I’m going to see if my local Home Goods has them!!!
Kris says
I’m also unsure about the rug shape/scale. The space seems to want a wider rug. I know that you already ordered but if it doesn’t work maybe a square rug? I think that a square, round or rectangular rug placed long edge against the fireplace would look cozier than the current orientation. Maybe square or round would help you avoid the bar stool issue.
YoungHouseLove says
Sadly anything wider would interfere with the stools at the counter (pulling them out to snag them on the rug would be super annoying) but here’s hoping the one on the way works!

I’m having the same problem right now, choosing a rug. We want one in our living room and in our dining room, which are one long room with nothing to break it up. I have been rug shopping and kicking around the idea of a solid color for the living room and a bold design for the dining room to sort of separate the two…I love that Pottery Barn rug you guys nixed – it would be perfect against our oak floors and peachy-beige walls! I also really like the yellow rug you have down now…I think it might grow on you!
Laura says
I remember an older post (about curtains I think?) where you shared that you buy a bunch of options, test them out, and return what you don’t like. I hate to return things, so I’m slow to do this, but have to change my thinking.
I used to think that other people (those famous “other people” out there) just could look at a rug/curtain/accessory in the store and just “know” it was right. Thanks for sharing your process …. it reallys changes my way of thinking!
And I agree…I love the look of the ikat-ish rug in the picture. Too bad it doesn’t look good in person.
Karen F says
the ikat rug was so pretty – I’m sorry it didn’t work out! Can’t wait to see what you end up with. I love John’s expression in the Home Goods picture – I’m pretty sure my husband would be wearing the same expression (if I managed to get him to come with me in the first place!)

Haha- he had a total case of “husband shopping” face!

Not sure this will be a popular opinion but I don’t think you really need rugs at all! There’s enough texture and colour in the floor to keep it interesting. Obviously it’s nicer on the feet but in terms of aesthetics I don’t think rugs add anything. Maybe that’s why you can’t find anything to feel ‘right’!
YoungHouseLove says
I think for Clara playing on the floor, she seems to gravitate towards a rug, so adding one to the seating area makes a little zone for her to run her little cars and play her drums, haha.

I’m currently on the hunt for a 5X7 rug for my much-used, family room and I’m having the hardest time. Maybe I need to go to Home Goods. How do you get these types of rugs to stay on the floor & not move around? Rug tape? One of those no-slip mats?
YoungHouseLove says
Just a rug pad (Target sells them) and putting something on them (ex: chair and ottoman) seems to work for us!

I’m trying to figure out if that would be sufficient for my two, active, often-running full-force boys.

I love all of your choices and have used so many as inspiration in my own home
. with that said what about a round rug in that area to break up some of the hard lines?
YoungHouseLove says
We’d love that but a round one would either look too small (like a round bath mat in the middle) or would interfere with the stools (we don’t want to pull them out and snag them on the rug, so since a round one is longer in the middle it wouldn’t work very well for the stool function).

I kind of need that grey and white stripe one in my life. LOVE.

I did get to go into a PA TJMAXX and look at rugs because I’m currently on the hunt for a living room rug. :)

This is my most recent mission. I even did a search on this website for help. I’ve been looking for a runner for my island (5 feet) with no luck. I think I like the “Geneve” indoor/outdoor rug at Ballard Designs but the sizes arent quite right and I need to see it in person. Plus I tried an outdoor rug from Lowe’s and it slips. Did you see Target’s ad this week? They have a chevron-ish rug in blue (and tan) on sale. I’ve decided to buy another gel-pro mat bc it fits perfectly and is so comfortable. Not so stylish but serves its purpose and
will not make my kids and husband slip.
YoungHouseLove says
We haven’t seen the Target one but it sounds pretty! I just worry chevron will be the same issue as stripes, a bit too busy for all the other stuff going on (open shelves, stools, tile to the ceiling, oversized pendants, etc).

Why actually yes…I did do some rug shopping this weekend! It kind of kicked off with my mom giving me her almost new yellow Alvine rug from Ikea that I have been drooling over for a long time but didn’t want to spend $250 for. For FREE?!? Can’t beat it! It lives in my bedroom now and feels perfect. So then I was on a rug kick and found an amazing deal on rugsusa.com for an 8×10 charcoal Moroccan trellis rug for my living room that will be perfect! And at 60% off with no tax or shipping charges…woohoo! Score! Here’s the link:

I have that ikat/diamond rug in my kitchen!!! I love it to pieces but I agree its a bit intense for your light and bright kitchen – I think that maybe it works in my kitchen since its a bit darker (chocolate milk colored walls, white cabinets, tin backsplash and dark countertops with green and blue accents.)
I actually liked the grey stripe the best for your kitchen – mayeb because of the light color and the way the grey picked up your stools and backslash colors.
Good luck finding something perfect!!!

On a related note, I think it’d be really fun if you replaced the chair in the corner with a comfy corner banquette. It might make more sense of the somewhat random living area in the kitchen and provide seating for more than one. Something like this –

YoungHouseLove says
We actually considered a banquette, but with seating for eight in the dining room (three steps away) and seating for four at the peninsula, any more seating/tables was too much for that corner for us. We love having a spot on the floor for Clara to play while we make dinner!

Oh, yes! An irregular rug shape may be the key for your rug dilemma (if the one you ordered doesn’t work). Sherry, perhaps you could buy the material & cut it into a personalized shape (or buy a rug & customize the shape)? I love how you customized some of your smaller rugs into faux-hide shapes (from your 1st house, I believe?). Flokati-type material would be gorgeous, or on the flip side, a thinner faux-hide material…either would tie in with a fireplace-area/relaxing-area vibe. Flor has something you may have seen, although a softer material may be more appealing in the look & feel for your room (but love the irregular shape concept):

Oh, just clarification – my “flip side” wording wasn’t meant literally (not flip side of the rug – sooo not cool, bro), but was a thick vs. thin/furry vs. sleek reference. Haha. :)

I will be in VA for a training for work. I am ALSO on the search for a living room rug!! My LO is only 6 months old, and soon will be wiggling his way around…and we have wood floors everywhere…since our living room is small, we are searching for a 5 x7 (I tried the 4×6 it’s just TOO small)…and we are thinking of going to the outlet by you. Where is the outlet’s that you go to for your RUG SHOPPING? Is there a pottery barn one by you? ALSO, I’VE BEEN SEARCHING HIGH AND LOW FOR THE POTTERY BARN MOORISH TILE RUG, EVERY-SINGLE-WHERE…AND CAN’T SEEM TO LOCATE ONE! I’ve been getting the itch to replace the rug in our kitchen as well. I’m glad you haven’t settled on any of the ones you have chosen… keep looking for the perfect one. Maybe something with a little blue or green in it. I think it needs a little yellow undertone in it to work with the color of the cork flooring… which is probably why the black and white rug didn’t look so hot in there. I do love that y’all have a sitting area in the kitchen. That area is just begging for someone to sit down in the chair and read a good book.
YoungHouseLove says
I totally agree about the undertone thing! That’s what we’re trying to pay a lot of attention to- we want the rug to just slip right in and look right at home!
xo,

Meagan says
You guys might want to consider a blue color rug that would bring out the accent color in some of the glasses on the open shelves as well as the print with the swimmer. The blue would make the white look brighter and would go with the green walls. =)
YoungHouseLove says
John actually mentioned that originally and we tried it in photoshop but it was a little too look-down-here-at-me. Ya know? With so much else going on (open shelves, penny tile to the ceiling, oversized pendants, stools, etc) we didn’t want the rug to steal the show- although we’re definitely open to painting the stools a bright poppy color, so that’s possibly in the cards too!
xo,

Hannah Deutsch says
Ooo, all cool rugs, but I agree that they didn’t really work with what’s there.
I do have a question though: you’ve had a lot of different rugs, from low-pile to woven, in all the rooms in your new and old houses, so do you have a preference on which you like best? I’m trying to find a rug for my living room, and in my mind for whatever reason it should be a low-pile rug (which is proving hard to find). The rug in your living room now looks woven, so I guess I’m wondering why you switched. Or your opinions about one over the other. Or do you buy with what you like the look of, and the pile doesn’t really matter? Sorry it’s sooo long! I can’t wait to see the rug you ordered!!
YoungHouseLove says
I think we like them all in different situations. We definitely prefer something jute or flat weave in the kitchen for easier cleaning (nothing to get mashed into a high pile surface) and tend to like cozy thick wool ones for bedrooms (our guest room, our master, etc) just because they’re nice and soft underfoot – although since we like them all, we do tend to play a bit loose (if we found a jute rug we loved for a bedroom, we’d totally be down).

Oh! I’m so glad we’re talking kitchen rugs today!
So I have a safety/fashion dilemma that I’m really scratching my head about. We recently moved to a house with a backyard pool. Our kids are older, on the tween/teen end of things. So while my bigger pool concerns of accidents *in* the pool are gone, I now have a rug problem on my hands!(And yes, I do know accidents can still happen- they are very supervised, have no fear.)
Yesterday we had three other families over for memorial day fun. Read: lots of kids in and out of the pool & in and out of the house. I can’t tell you how many times I held my breath. (And how many towels were thrown down in an effort to avoid potential mishaps.) I felt SO lucky nobody broke a bone walking into the kitchen. The kitchen has a back door that leads to the backyard/pool area.
This is getting lengthy- so sorry. Does anyone know what type of rug I should be placing at the back door for maximum water absorption? I had planned on a wool runner in front of the sink as I have a long stretch, but now I’m thinking for the sake of continuity the runner should match a 3×5, 4×6, 2×3(?)at the back door. But I am really stumped as to what the best material would be. I’ve been googling all morning to no avail. Help?
YoungHouseLove says
Anyone have ideas for Christa?! Sounds like a wool one wouldn’t be a bad choice (natural fibers are generally ok with water and tend to dry fairly well) but maybe there’s something better out there?
xo,
s
Kandace says
I would go with a wool rug. Wool is very good for water absorption and shouldn’t get a musty smell to it :)
