In what can only be described as a one-two punch of home-ownership havoc, our washer officially died right on the heels of the big plumbing debacle that we detailed for you guys yesterday. Yup, remember when we mentioned that we hoped it would be a simple and inexpensive fix here? Well, the appliance gods must have been softly giggling as we typed that.
The repair guy took one look at the corroded interior of our old machine (rusted bolts, a broken belt, etc) and said “I could attempt to band-aid this for $200, but I don’t think it would run for very long – honestly, I wouldn’t put another dollar into this machine.” And that was coming from the man who would be taking said money… so… not a good sign. But we definitely appreciated his honesty.
And that’s how we suddenly found ourselves digging back into our “emergency fund” just days after writing a plumbing check to go laundry appliance shopping. We briefly considered trying to get something secondhand (from the ReStore, Craigslist, etc) but we decided that to spend once on something for the long haul would be more settling than getting another “in the meantime” fix and hoping it held out. So after checking out a few online appliance outlets, as well as some mainstream big box stores to see what was on the market, we hit the streets to check things out in person.
We had actually been looking forward to the eventual laundry appliance hunt, because we knew someday we’d get to upgrade these guys (the repairman guessed our washer was over twenty years old, so that’s a pretty good run!) but it was certainly nothing we expected to be embarking on so close to our little plumbing snafu.
When we moved in, we’d daydream about getting what I affectionately call “mac daddy appliances” someday (both in the kitchen and the laundry area) all of which would be pretty and sparkly and have all of the features we’d ever wanted (like projecting laser shows on the ceiling and making us waffles). Okay, maybe those last two are a stretch, but this sudden rush to get a working washer while our laundry piled up wasn’t the scenario we originally pictured ourselves shopping under (“what do you mean I can’t wait for a Presidents Day sale???”).
Luckily John’s parents welcomed us into their laundry room to do a couple of loads to tide us over while we researched and price-compared (and you better believe I asked John to do those loads so that if something broke he would be the one answering for it). Thankfully, we were able to catch up to our quickly-growing piles, and nothing broke on our watch.
We have sort of a new appliance mantra in this house, which is essentially that this time around we don’t want to just chase a deal. We want to do more research, be open to spending a bit more than before, and really think about the features we’ll enjoy and use, because we plan to be here for decades.
We got one of the best deals of our life on our last washer/dryer purchase because we selected the most heavily discounted models on the showroom floor (they were the same brand as our first set, which we liked, so it seemed like a no-brainer). But while we don’t regret the savings (nearly 50% off!), or the quality of them (they worked great for us), we did sacrifice some features in those heavily-discounted models that we ended up missing over time – like a digital display that showed the amount of time left in the cycle, for example. A little thing, yes, but something in retrospect that we would’ve paid extra for – especially since we had it in our first home’s washer & dryer, so we knew what we were missing.
After a ton of discussion and research, we narrowed our search criteria to the following:
- A Top-Loading washer. We liked our last two front-loaders a lot, but with our existing set-up we’ve both enjoyed not bending over as much. And we didn’t like having to keep up with mildew maintenance on our two previous front-loaders (we’d take time to wipe it down, leave the door open to air it out, and occasionally run Affresh tablets through it) which we understand is a persistent problem in front loaders. Plus, top-loaders now come in high efficiency versions which minimize front-loaders’ previous advantages of load size, spin speed, and water usage.
- Whirlpool or Maytag. Both brands are made by the same folks who made our last two washers & dryers, which worked really well for us (Whirlpool Corp). We also heard from lots of you that brands like GE and LG can be expensive to repair (and boy did we have repair costs on the brain!) while many of you agreed that Whirlpool/Maytag did you right (like on this comment thread for example). Plus, we liked our last two Whirlpool Duets and the top loading washer in this house that we’re replacing is a Maytag (that thing lasted 20+ years, so it definitely was reassuring).
- The ability to silence the buzzer. Again, it’s a little detail, but our current dryer doesn’t let us disable the crazy loud and annoying buzzer that shouts at us three times as a cycle comes to an end. So we couldn’t run it during Clara’s nap for fear that it would jolt her awake since it’s just down the hall from her door.
- A digital display. Mainly for the cycle time countdown mentioned above. What can I say, we’re divas for the
are-we-there-yethow-much-longer details. - A dryer with steam. We just heard good things about that throughout our research and it sounded like a feature we might actually enjoy and use.
Our search first lead us to this model (here’s the washer & the dryer) because it’s a Whirlpool and actually very similar to what we used at John’s parents house (they’ve had theirs around a year and have really enjoyed them so far). They each earned a 4.5 star review on Home Depot’s website too, so that was reassuring.
We narrowed our shopping zone down to Home Depot and Lowe’s, since we’ve had success there in our previous appliance hunts (prices from other vendors like Best Buy, HH Gregg, and sites like Whirlpool Outlet didn’t get as low as theirs for the same models) and both of our previous laundry sets were from Lowe’s.
The sale prices shown above and below are from both stores who each had them marked down 10% below MSRP and were running a 10%-off-all appliances promotion, which could be stacked. They also both were offering free delivery and haul away, and would honor 5% off if we used our store credit card (the Lowe’s card does it automatically, and if you ask Home Depot to do it at the register they should be able to manually apply that in the interest of “price matching” their competition).
Initially we were torn between the Whirlpool above and this extremely similar model from Maytag (here’s the washer & the dryer).
After hunting for some reason or review that would sway us towards one or the other (they both were very highly rated, had similar capacities, similar Energy Star ratings, and identical price tags), this third option appeared to us at Home Depot (here’s the washer & the dryer). It was just a slight step-down from the ones above (the washer capacity is .3 cubic feet less – oh the sacrifice!) and the front is designed differently (no gray trim, and no window into the dryer). But the price tag promised to save us over $130 between the pair and their online review boasted a nearly 5 star rating – which was better than the other two we had been weighing!
Home Depot carried it in stock (the display price of $724 was before the 10% off promotion was applied) but Lowe’s didn’t. They offered to special order it for us, but they’d only be able to apply one of the 10% discounts. We showed them the printout that Home Depot had given us that showed $651 as the final price (before the additional 5% credit card discount was applied at checkout) and they said they’d price match it. But ultimately we gave our sale to Home Depot, since they were the ones to show us this option first, as well as having it in stock (truth be told, we liked that salesperson better there too, so we wanted him to get the credit).
In case all of those words make your brain hurt and you like images and arrows, here’s a cost breakdown (mostly because John takes great pleasure in making them).
We’re glad that we weren’t forced to pay full price due to being under the gun and needing to replace them rightthissecond instead of waiting for a special holiday sale, but it also felt good to take the time and make a detailed list of what we really wanted this time (and check out a bunch of reviews) instead of jumping on the “this one’s the cheapest” bandwagon. Honestly, even if these were less discounted, the features and reviews probably would have tipped the scales in their favor.
They’re set for delivery a little later today (WAHOOOOOO!) so we should have an update for you next week once they’re here and we’ve taken them for a spin.
We also have some plans for the floor under them in the laundry nook (there are actually small scraps of old carpet hiding under the ones we have now). So just cross your fingers that we don’t peel back those carpet scraps under the old washer and dryer to find a giant hole/huge leak/live animal/other debacle lurking. Don’t they say these things happen in threes? Le yipes.

I just wanted to thank you guys for keeping these posts about model comparison, price comparison, and store negotiations a regular feature on this blog. Not only do they give us great tips on what features to consider before purchasing (I’m the girl who assumes all blue cars are the same haha) but that it’s ok to negotiate and work with the stores to ensure you are getting the best possible price. That process can be so intimidating and awkward and nobody wants to feel cheap or poor, so these posts are a huge confidence boost and remind us that saving a buck is nothing to feel awkward about!!

You’re so sweet Lauren! We’re so happy to share the details!

So sorry to hear that. We got the same pair and the washer broke after 18 months (it was only covered for 1 year). Had the replace the entire thing, the recommeded (service pro) repairman couldnt fix it.

I believe that Home Depot will price match themselves if they are even more discounted. You may not have missed out on the President’s Day sale after all! I can’t remember if it is within 14 days or 30 days. If you see the price goes down, take your receipt in and they should credit you back the difference. Does that make any sense at all?!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Tara! That’s an awesome idea! I’ll keep an eye out for deeper sales – I forgot they do price adjustments, but you’re right!

My sister and I both have cabrios. No problems. The kids love to watch the machine run throughout the window. LOL. But my 15 yr old dryer is still going strong. Why did you choose to replace yours?
YoungHouseLove says
Mostly, we just wanted a matching set. Also, the hookup for our old dryer came up as “not to code” in the inspection, so we thought upgrading them together would make us feel more settled, so we could mentally cross that off too.

If it makes you feel any better we have been having the same kind of luck around our humble abode. The beginning of January the furnace decided to go on the fritz. Then Tuesday I went downstairs to find our water heater had turned into a fountain. Luckily it happened after I got home, otherwise we would have had a HUGE mess. In any case, a new water heater was installed. This also happened to be the month my car needed new tires. Oh and our washer is not sounding well right now either. Somedays I really think being a homeowner is not all it’s cracked up to be!

Congrats on the big purchase- new appliances are so fun! We’ve been using our Cabrio series washer for 5 years now and still going strong (so hopefully I didn’t just jinx it!)- love the HE top-loaders! I will just give you a heads up though- you may find you still want to prop open the lid a bit sometimes to air it out. Even though it’s not a front loading HE, there is still a smell that accumulates sometimes. Otherwise, they’re great- enjoy!!

Ours are super old and ugly and will probably die soon, but they work pretty ok! :) We got them for $50 each on Craigslist.
Literally, am so sad about Rob leaving Parks and Rec…sad!!

and for anyone dealing with a stinking front loader.. I have four dogs, so hair (and stink) is something I deal with on the daily. I tried everything from those tides HE packets to everything pinterest suggested.. what works best FOR ME is putting bleach in the detergent cartridge and running my washer on the hottest cycle (sanitary for me) once a week. its been a miracle! I haven’t noticed the smell come back in over a year since I’ve been doing it! and I def don’t keep the door open anymore.
just a little FYI if anyone is dealing with a stinky front-loader :)

My parents had that EXACT same washing machine. They bought it new the year they built their house…1986! That thing was 28 years old!! I’m impressed that it lasted that long.

Yikes! So glad your washer broke now instead of with a full load of dirty cloth diapers inside, like mine did!!
We replaced ours with LG front loaders from Sears since my sister worked there at the time. I like them, but secretly can’t wait til they die so I can get. HE top-loaders, which didn’t exist then.
I’ve heard how much better top-loaders are for washing diapers, too, so I’m jealous! Enjoy!!

What a bummer! So exciting to “have” to get new appliances though. Hope you enjoy them. I know it’s a bit more personal, but would love to hear how you guys save for projects. I can imagine a budget where the line-item “house projects” also includes your job is different than the usual, but I wonder if you could do a general post (someday) about how you save for such a variety of projects. It is sometimes hard to think that saving $20 here and there can ever become enough for a bigger project.

We’d love to write a post like that! Thanks for the suggestion.

Out of curiosity, have you taken to the internet to find out how this washer works on cloth diapers? I had nothing but trouble with my top loading HE washing machine getting diapers clean…
YoungHouseLove says
I’ve heard from someone else who has had the same one for 8 months and says it’s awesome on her cloth diapers (right here in the comments), so I have my fingers crossed!
xo
s
Leah says
Brooke, do you have a “bulky” or “heavy duty” setting? On our top loading HE, that’s the setting we have to use to get extra water beyond what the machine has measured for us. I’m not doing diapers (yet — I have a few more months to go), but this has worked well for heavily soiled clothes and for cleaning sheets.
Sue says
Congrats Guys. I went with the top loader washer for the same reason you did. People with front loaders kept telling me about the smell that would occur. I got the Kenmore versions, and I love them. I love having the see through doors to check things out. Never thought I would enjoy doing laundry this much!
Neely Brown says
My boss has this set and the glass lid on the washer broke twice (he repaired it once) and the second time it completely shattered- and Maytag told him he just needed a new machine and it wasn’t covered by the warranty. Hopefully you won’t have this problem, but I will be gentle with the lid!
Annette says
Just a little FYI, we got a brand new sparkly fancy front loader about 6 months ago (I too was waiting for my old one to keel over, which he finally did, RIP), and it has this cool feature where the door has 2 “closed” positions, one completely closed for washing and the other slightly open for airing out. I was concerned about mildew because that seemed to be everyone’s complaint with front loaders, but so far this seems to have solved the problem.

Congrats on the new appliances. Why did you decide to get a new dryer, too? The old one was still working, right?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we mostly just liked the idea of a matched set, and also the dryer hookup was listed as “not to code” in our inspection, so it felt settling to deal with that at the same time, and then mentally cross off all laundry issues from the list. Hopefully for the long haul!
xo
s
Kelly says
Obviously too late now, but did you look into using the front loaders with the optional bases/drawers underneath? In our townhouse, we had our front loaders stacked like yours were. When we upgraded our laundry appliances (Whirpool Duets) in our new house, we opted for them. They really make a difference with reaching in and having to bend over. And I’m pregnant and due at the end of March, so I am very aware of how much bending over is possibly the worst thing. Ever.
YoungHouseLove says
We thought about that for a little while, but still worried about the mildew maintenance that front loaders require along with hearing that top loaders are awesome with cloth diapers, so that tipped the scales.
xo
s
Leah says
Is that $651 each? I’m guessing so, or else we got swindled on our washer and dryer. We got something a little bit less fancy for $1200 (including delivery) for the set. We did go with a local place, but I don’t think that increases the price 2x.
We went with a top loader too, but I wanted an agitator, so we didn’t get all of the same features you got. We did get an HE with an agitator, which I hear is pretty rare. I think we have a Whirlpool — I don’t quite recall, as we got it last summer. The only feature I do miss is the ability to soak. Maybe I can do that, but I haven’t figured out how yet. I’ll need to do some research.
After having a stacked laundry “unit” where we could only use the washer OR the dryer, I feel downright giddy every time we use our new machines. Hope you feel the same!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, $618 each!

We just bought the same washer a few weeks ago and we love it! We’re the opposite about the buzzer though – we wish it was louder because ours is in the basement. Other than that, we are very pleased with our purchase! And it’s Made in America so we feel really good about that.
Cindy Matthews says
I’ve had the Whirlpool Cabrio toploader and while it did an excellent job, it sprang a leak and the drum split. I’ve now got an LG top loader with digital display and energy star and love it – a Consumer’s Report Best Buy. I bought Maytag years ago because my mother had one that literally lasted forever but the newer models are not as good (I got about 10 years out of it and hers lasted almost 40! with 5 kids). They will probably tell you it will void the warranty if you don’t use the hoses that come with it but you really should use the reinforced no-burst hoses especially since it’s upstairs and you may want a drain try with it since it is inside and upstairs. And you should replace the hoses every 5 years to be sate.
YoungHouseLove says
Great tips Cindy!

I *love* the title of this post!
Just wanted to chime in that although I have a front-loader, I don’t have a mildew problem, because it also has two temperature levels above regular “Hot” — aka “Temp Boost” and “Power Temp Boost — that are hot enough to disinfect the laundry and kill any mildew. I don’t use the upper temperatures all that often, but they sure came in handy last year during a family bout with pinkeye.
I didn’t buy the washer for that feature, though. I bought a schmancier set than I would have normally, because I needed a dryer that didn’t need a vent and a washer I could stack on top of such a dryer. Instead of a vent, a “condenser dryer” funnels the damp air back through the machine and condenses the moisture, which drains out through a pipe shared with the washer. It takes a little longer for things to dry, but it’s a good option if you need to put a dryer where there isn’t any vent (e.g., very old houses).

Sounds cool!

Maybe you already answered this question, but why did you decide to replace both the washer and the dryer, instead of just the washer? Is it because you just like to have a “matching set?” I know some people see them as a pair, but I’ve always just replaced the washer and dryer one at a time when either one breaks, and made sure that the two models looked OK with each other. Inquiring minds want to know :-)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, it’s mostly because we liked the idea of a matching set, and also because the dryer hookup was listed as “not to code” during our inspection, so we thought while we were updating the washer it would mentally be nice to deal with the dryer issue too, and have them both up to date and hopefully good for the long haul. (she says as she knocks on wood and crosses all appendages).

heyruthie says
Awesome! At least I know that it’s more of a preference issue, and I’m not making a huge boo-boo if I can only afford to replace one at a time! (Which seems to always be the case, with four kids running around. Sheesh, these lil’ people are expensive!)

You guys are going to love hat washer and dryer set, we bought ours about 5 years ago (same line, slightly older model number). And they are amazing, we had a super junky set before as well and let me just say it wa like a miracle how much easier it was to wash everything. And the steam option… I die :). I rarely have to pull out an iron! One thing to watch for since I know you two are expecting, the only problem we have ever had was that a couple of tiny infant socks managed together their way under the drum, and successfully jammed up the filter. It was an inexpensive fix.

We ended up with the Bravos after our inherited washer broke and after a year I am in LOVE with the machine. We have the see through top and its so great to be able to see what’s going on in there. Will you Craigslist or Freecycle the old dryer since it still works?
An old appliance guy I knew told me that when he sees both a washer and dryer out for the trash man, he picks both up because he KNOWS that at least one of them still works. He has a nice little business selling older machines to folks who just can’t afford new ones at any price.
Keeps usable things out of the landfills, too.

Ooof, the joys of home ownership.
Question, since I know you guys love Craig’s good ol list and thrift/antique stores… did you think about trying to find one used? Or do you automatically think it’s worth it to buy new, to get exactly what you want and something that’s not worn at all?
I’ve never bought a brand-new large appliance, and I think of it similarly to cars… I’d never buy a new car cause you can get such a good deal on gently used ones. But I’m not sure that same logic applies to appliances! Thanks for any insight.
YoungHouseLove says
I think in this case we liked the “insurance” of buying them new since they come with a one year warranty and would be delivered and installed for us – but for things that are easier to haul and a little less scary in the “could these break in a month” arena (like a nice range hood for example), we love Craigslist. We got an awesome chef-grade one for our last house that way.

This is a weird sort of FYI thing—and maybe you knew before you bought them. My dad was a GE guy and did appliance design in their plastics division for years. I learned a lot about appliance manufacture and am super picky about them based on the things I learned from him.
Whirlpool bought out Maytag–and both brands are manufactured in the same facilities at the same time. I believe they have a facility in Iowa, a facility somehwere Illinois and another in Arkansas. The parts are made in one facility, moved to the next and then assembled on a shared line in Iowa.
So the differences in quality probably aren’t that great. Not to say certain models don’t have different design features that make them different/more funcational. But they are made by the same hands.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, my understanding is it’s essentially the same company (we were very happy with our previous Whirlpool appliances, so it tipped us towards sticking with Whirlpool/Maytag this time).
