Sure we hate ’em on the internet, but we also don’t like unpleasant surprises popping up in our yard either. That means you giant crazy mushroom clump:
When we left for our daily walk yesterday evening I noticed what I thought was a pile of dead leaves knocked down by that morning’s rains. Nope, instead it was this mass o’ mushrooms that literally appeared out of nowhere in less than 24 hours. Not really the “buy my house” look we’re going for these days.
Now I consider myself to be a fun guy and I can appreciate the miracle that is nature (wow, that much mushroomage grew in just a day!) but this bloom of ‘shroom had to go. Good thing those suckers are easy to knock out (although there was a fair amount of slug-like slime involved). Here’s hoping they don’t pull a David Copperfield and reappear again anytime soon.
Pssst- Sherry here, ten points to those who can find the hidden mushroom pun that my cheesy hubby stealthily worked into this post.
Ali says
I TOTALLY caught the fun guy as I was reading it and was laughing – you guys are a hoot!
Kate (Southern-Belle-Simple) says
fun guy….fungi! love it! sorry about the pop up though!
Amy says
Fun guy. Ha ha ha!
I have some of those in my yard too. Yuck.
niki says
fungi
Kate says
i’ll take those 10 points for the “fun guy” comment. Oh, as a scientist, those really never get old. well, they do. but that’s neither here nor there.
and, that was a HUGE mushroom. Should have used the bambino for scale :)
YoungHouseLove says
Seriously. Although if we used Clara for scale it might have been frightening. That thing was huge.

Julie N says
Fun Guy. Ha ha. : )
Tera says
Fun guy = fungi… I chuckled when I first reaad the post and immediately wondered why there wasn’t a parenthetical sidenote. Alas, Sherry to the rescue!
Caroline Poter says
haha! Truly a fun guy!
kyle says
hahaha…fun guy…
Gina at Temporary Nest says
Fun Guy = fungi! :)
Kim says
Be thankful they’re not stinkhorns-they smell like a dead animal. We discovered our first stinkhorn right by the front door hiding amongst fallen Camilla blooms-not the welcome you want to give visitors! Turns out they feed or grow on decaying wood. No more free mulch from the city for us!
Melissa says
Fun Guy! You guys are too punny!
Lindsay says
Unrelated to this post (though I share your hatred of mushrooms in the yard), but your site is loading significantly slower for me lately – has something changed? While it’s loading, it claims to be “waiting for cetrk.com”, which looks likely to be a web tracking script you’re using. Maybe it’s just suddenly decided to start fighting with my work firewall? That does indeed happen occasionally. I’ll check from home later, but I’m just curious… :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lindsay,
So sorry about that! We haven’t changed anything on our end (and our site is showing an average load time that’s pretty much the same as we’ve always had). But we’d love to hear if anyone else is noticing the same thing (or if it is your work firewall). Anyone else having an issue?

E @ Oh! Apostrophe says
Fun guy! I need those ten points today! :)
kyla says
have not heard a good ‘fun-guy’ pun since middle schoold. well played.
Cait @ Hernando House says
Holy giant mushroom, Batman! Also, totally caught the fun guy pun and laughed in my cube at work.
Jenny says
Fun guy!! love it! One of my favorite jokes is: a mushroom walks into a bar, the bartender says we don’t serve your kind, mushroom says why not? I’m a fun-gi(guy)
Your reference made me giggle!! Nice one!
Sara says
Wow! Just wow! That thing grew overnight. So interesting!
Callie says
Your husband and my dad have the same sense of humor. Or maybe they are just both “fun guy”s. Hehe.
Patti says
omg, i read that post 10 times and didn’t get it … nice catch commenters!
JES says
FUN GUY!! I love it! I’m such a nerd..
Kristen says
Fun Guy! hahaha! I love the cheesiness! :)
Michelle @ Ten June says
HA! Cracking me up!
That mushroom is a little ridiculous on the size scale, though. How does it even grow so fast?! I’m pretty sure that all of the leaves in our lawn are covering up scary fungi like that!
Alicia says
Man, I missed it. I read it 3 times and still didn’t get it! I guess I’m having an off day. Y’all are so punny!
liz @ bontempsbeignet says
That was definitely a ‘Dad’ joke. Dads are fun guys too!
- Sarah :-) says
GOt it – fun guy… as in fungi. Reminds me of a joke my Dad told ALL growing up:
A mushroom walks into a bar, and the bartender says “Get outta here, we don’t serve you’re kind!” And the mushroom says “Why not?! I’m a fungi…”
Bah-dum-cchhh. Okay. Now I officially feel like a dweeb.
Carrie says
hha….I love it…I think the exact same thing when I see a “fungi” pop up in my yard and I just have to laugh every time I see them…Thanks for the laugh!
Loren says
Ahhh!! So cool! I understand why you pulled it up, but I love finding mushrooms growing in our back yard. We had a bona fide ‘fairy ring’ last year that kept getting larger and larger every time our land lady mowed.
Emily @ The Happy Home says
ugggh, we’ve been getting big old shroomies too! i’ve been using online databases to try to figure out what ours are, just so i don’t have to be SUPER paranoid about the puppies getting into something they shouldn’t. ours are round, half underground, and goooooey, like plastic bags filled with petroleum jelly. just thought i’d share that wonderful image with you!
Anna says
Fungi…ha ha. :) Used to love telling the “Why was the mushroom the life of the party?” joke when I worked in environmental education.
I’ve had the same issue in my backyard (just across the river in the West End). Mine are more like the round button type of mushrooms, but still huge clumps!
Liz says
We have some crazy mushrooms in our landscaping that look to be the normal tan-colored variety, but when you kick them they release neon green dust into the air that looks like smoke. Although slightly fun, it’s really a bit scary looking.
Melanie says
Sorry, fungi, but they do come back. Good pun!
Karla @ {TheClassyWoman} says
Fun guy = Fungi. ;)
Every year we get patches of them on our lawn too in the fall when everything begins to decay, which is when they are supposed to appear. Ours are white or bright fluorescent yellow. LOL.
I would always remove them with plastic gloves because I know they can be very poisonous. My mom’s two pups nearly died after eating such mushrooms years ago. Thanks be to the Milk Thistle capsules that saved their liver.
Anyway, I wanted to tell you that although they are ugly, they do one great thing-they suck up toxins from the earth, that’s one of the purposes of mushrooms. So every pesticide that may have ever lived on a lawn at some point can be pulled up via the roots and removed from the soil, so can heavy metals etc. As much as I love eating mushrooms that is one reason why I’m now avoiding them, especially if they are not organic because they are a magnet for toxic material.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so interesting Karla! Thanks for the tip!

Jessica @ How Sweet says
Fun guy… LOL! We have some too. It kills my husband.
Katherine says
Nicely done, John, sounds like the kind of pun my hubby would make (all men share a pun-ny gene? Pretty sure it’s related that whole XY thing).
Strange, I haven’t had any issues with the site loading.
nicole says
haha ‘fun guy’ hilarious!
That’s crazy that it grew that much in 24 hrs! I had no idea they could pop up like that!
Becky says
I caught it right away!! My husband has a t-shirt with a picture of a mushroom on it and caption that says “I’m a fun guy”. Gotta love it!!
Gena says
Fun guy! I kept reading waiting for the recognition of the pun, but when it didn’t happen I was happy to see the shout out at the bottom of the post!
Jenna says
I am so glad there aren’t any giant crazy mushrooms where I live! Although I do wish that I had seasons! (Las Vegas is my home)
Dawn says
We had a bunch of mushrooms in our yard in a month or so ago. We kept knocking them down and they kept coming back! But we found a natural remedy online-
Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 gallon of water and pour over the mushroom. It may take 2 or 3 days of doing this before it is completely gone.
It worked on ours and knock on wood they haven’t come back yet!
Kristina says
Well played sir. Just a note on mushrooms, they form a complex network under the surface of your soil and what you see in your yard is just the reproductive parts of the complex. Those little guys in the background? They are probably part of the big guy. Pick them as they poke up since you want your yard to look nice, however don’t be upset if they come back, especially when the soil is wet. Have you gotten a lot of rain lately? Overall they are good for your soil, they break down organic material and form symbiotic relationships with trees.
Snickrsnack Katie says
I have these “fun guys” all over my yard. They are hideous!
Cindy says
Fun Guy! haha
Sara @ House Bella says
Fun guy. Very nice. :)
Make sure to keep Burgs from nibbling on that beauty! I have a friend who just lost their pup from some innocent mushroom chowing.
jessica says
Did you ever see the t-shirt with the picture of a mushroom that says “Fun Guy” underneath?
YoungHouseLove says
I’ll have to keep an eye out for one of those for my punny guy.

I’ve always thought John was a really fun guy! As a matter of fact I think of you two as Sherry and Mr. Mushroom. LOL
Maddy @ Somewhere Splendid says
Hahah! Nice job with the pun ;)
We had a massive growth in our backyard that was the same way – a giant white mushroom patch that only took up this one foot wide by ten foot long area of the lawn. Some of them were much more “normal” sized, but I had a few that were easily the size of your head, and quite a few that were much, much larger. Ick.
Elaine says
On Linday’s comment earlier, I did also notice that the pages are taking longer than usual to load up. Not a big deal, but since someone else mentioned it…
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Elaine,
Thanks for the heads up! We’re hoping to figure it out soon!
