Just can’t get enough of them these days. I think it’s because of all the rectangles and squares that abound (from windows, doors, and beams, to things like beds, cribs, and fireplaces with right angles galore). It’s just nice to add some curves to break up the square-fest.
We got this guy at Hobby Lobby on sale (they were offering 50% off all wall hanging items, yesssss) for $65 – down from $130. Not bad for an ornate 30″ oil-rubbed bronze beauty, right?
We know it looks a smidge small for that big expanse of wall (see first pic), but once we hang curtains high and wide on the giant picture window – and scooch the mirror over a bit afterwards – it’ll hopefully be perfect.
Not sure if we’ll paint it down the line or leave it oil-rubbed bronze. Once we hang curtains we’ll make a final decision since the room is definitely still in progress and adding in some oil-rubbed bronze curtain rods might be a game changer. Can you handle the suspense? Haha. Although something fun like deep plum might be sweet. Or even white to tie in with the white frames over Karl – especially since this similar mirror (except for the fact that it’s $495 and the links are more oblong than circular) is pretty gorgeous in glossy white.

What is that next to Karl in the first picture? Is that a basket with Clara’s toys in it?

Yes! It’s not too deep, not too shallow, but just right. Planning a post about it for BabyCenter soon!

Any ideas for something round to hang above a toilet other than a mirror(hello awkward for my hubby who would have to face the mirror while doing you know what!) Way too many rectangles in our master bath with the mirrors, separate vanities, transom window… Everything I’ve thought of just seems odd for above a toilet.
YoungHouseLove says
Round plates or baskets might work! Maybe just google “round wall decor” and see what comes up that’s not a mirror? Good luck!

A large oval frame with this print ( http://www.keepcalmgallery.com/prints/hllovely.htm )would look nice in a bathroom…
LauraC says
If you want something silly, I found an antique (very heavy) metal plaque that read, “Please do not use the toilet while the train is standing in the station.” I found it on ebay for about $10 and thought it was the funniest thing ever. That was a year ago, and I don’t know if I’ll actually hang it once we redo that bathroom. But it sure was funny!

Lovely, as usual! I wish I could pay you to come accessorize my house (of course, I’d have to have the money to pay you and to buy the accessories, but you get the idea). I am SO bad at picking out things to hang on the walls, and then figuring out precisely where to hang them… it’s just too much! If I see something I like in the store, I have a terrible time visualizing whether it will look good in my house.
I wish you could bottle that instinct of yours and sell it!

The fact that they are opening a Home Goods at the Chesterfield Mall should save you some gas for these mirror finds.

nice find! forgive me if you’ve already mentioned it but do you know what kind of curtains you’re aiming for in this room? my hubby and 5 month old son are moving into a new house may 1st and can’t wait to renovate! you’re site is my go-to when looking for ideas on a budget! (ehhh, it also helps me pass the time in the stuffy office i’m stuck in 40 hours a week…)
YoungHouseLove says
We’re not sure at all what we’re gonna do in terms of curtains. Lately I’ve been thinking that light plum sheers or even textured white sheers might be sweet with the big bold green rug. Don’t want to get too busy with the panels since there will be six of them in the room. Should be interesting…

Yup, but he’s a long legged and long nosed chihuahua type called “deer headed” (as opposed to shorter bug-eyed “apple headed” chihuahuas). And yes, we’re dorks for knowing that.

I have been waiting VERY patiently for about a year now for Hobby Lobby to open. Not sure what the hold up is. I saw that exact same mirror at Home Goods the other day. Love it!

Hobby Lobby rocks my socks. Seriously, so many great deals in one store! Great find. Can’t wait to see the room come together.

were you able to find that West Elm parsons desk on sale anywhere? I haven’t had luck finding nay deals on it online.

Dang. I love that mirror.
Anyone know if they run that sale on wall hanging decor regularly? I really think I sorta need to have that.
YoungHouseLove says
It seems really frequent (every time we go tons of stuff is 50% off) so maybe call and ask if they have a shedule or know when the next wall decor sale will start?

Amanda @ Our Humble A{Bowe}d says
Their sales are usually Monday through Saturday. Depending when YHL picked it up, it might still be going on…
Megan says
Goodness…that white mirror is expensive! I like your Hobby Lobby find!
Mona Alicia says
I like yours better than the $400+ one because yours has a beveled edge. That’s something I always look for in a mirror because I think it looks more expensive. So one point for you guys and minus one for the pricey people!
Clare says
Love that mirror! I cant wait to see what you do with it!
Mona Alicia says
Just saw your comment about Hobby Lobby sales. A clerk in ours told me their sales cycle every three weeks. So I always wait until the item I want is on sale.

Meredith says
LOVE the mirror. I think it will be gorgeous with the new drapes.
But let’s talk discounts. I am SO TIRED of inflated prices and artificial sales – it drives me crazy! I am fairly certain you got a $65 mirror for $65. It seems EVERYTHING at Hobby Lobby is always 50% off! Same can be said for JoAnn’s or Michael’s and if it isn’t on sale this week, it will be next week. If you work their coupons you get items for 40% or 50% off then yay – you might be paying close to what it is worth. If you don’t have a coupon, then you are paying their overhead, sucka!
I observed this with a like item found at both Wal-Mart and JoAnn’s – just a plastic Sterylite brand storage basket. I love these and use them in every closet of my house. $1.67 at Wal-Mart. $3.99 at JoAnn’s. With a typical 40% off coupon, that makes it $2.39 – still way more than I would pay for the like item elsewhere.
I dunno – you guys like to shop for bargains – I bet you could bring some real attention to this kind of deception. Something in retail is broken when the seasonal items get unpacked, shelved, and prices START at a sale price.
YoungHouseLove says
I definitely see what you mean about Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. I try to never buy anything without 40-50% off. But sometimes awesome deals pop up, like a square woven storage ottoman that I got for $20 at Michael’s (anything similar I have seen since is $100+!). We just try to ask ourselves if something is worth the price to us before paying. And if it is we buy it, and we’re generally really happy with it. If it’s not, we don’t buy it and keep an eye out for a better deal!
xo,
s
Kristi says
It’s a high-low pricing strategy. I don’t know if I’d call it deception. Most department stores operate in the same way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pricing_strategies
Wal-mart just tells you flat out what their strategy is: everyday low pricing :). No one pays premium but no one gets a steal. Wal-mart still has a big ol mark up and makes tons of $. But I can see how this strategy seems more honest and consumer friendly.
But, I love coupons and deals, so I’m one of those people who likes the high-low. I’ll wait until something goes on sale, I get free shipping, etc!
Meredith says
I definitely think it is wrong to have those hang tags on seasonal (easter/halloween, etc.) decor items that says $14.99 but it never actually sells for that. I know there is psychology in it, the people who run in at the last minute for an easter wreath think “sweet – I am getting this %50 off” when in reality, everyone has paid that price since it hit the sales floor.
Remember when a clearance sale actually meant something at a department store? I used to shop Meier and Frank (now Macy’s) in Oregon when I was a kid with my mom when a 15 hour sale happened twice a year. The “biggest sale of the season” is now every other weekend it seems.
I just can’t buy into Kohl’s cash, Gym bucks, and all that loyalty promo stuff. And even stodgy Lands End is in on it now. I bought some things with the “hurry 25% off and free shipping sale over the weekend. “Hurry – only hours left!” And then the next day, what shows up in my inbox but “30% off and free shipping.”
It is all so maddening.
Christie says
I was just at Hobby Lobby this past weekend and fell in love with that same mirror. (swoon) Great choice! :)
Wendy says
Love it! I just bought a mirror for above my bed that is somewhere in between this one and the one you linked to. I found it at Home Goods for $39.99! I love it, and I desperately want to spray paint something thanks to you, but I’m waiting until I make my curtains and find a new rug to decide. Mine is a rustic silver/black/scratched up on purpose finish.

Just to offer a dissenting opinion…I can think of many colors your mirror would look FAB in if you are to paint it. I say that is the beauty of the mirror is that it can grow with your room.

I love round mirrors – last year we were redecorating our guest bedroom with board and batten and this beautiful deep blue wall color. Since it tended to be a bit nautical, I wanted a round mirror to make it resemble a big round porthole. Took me several months to find one that wasn’t $200. I was so frustrated when I was searching! Of course, as soon as I bought it I saw round mirrors in every store I went into :)
Paige says
ooo I LOVE the mirror. I scrolled down the other comments to see what people are saying–I’m shocked everyone wants you to keep it as is!
I say PAINT IT PLUM. I think that’s the best idea you’ve ever had {not really, but it’s close…}; especially if you tie the plum color into the curtains.
Obvi, glossy white would look amazing, as every glossy white accessory looks bangin’ and fresh. BUT I’d like to see a bold color–and PLUM is first on my list.
gemma@thesweetestdigs says
Wow- love it! I vote to leave it as is. Looks great against the grey walls.

I know this won’t make it past moderation but could you please do something other than shop? This post is pointless. Wow, you bought a mirror. Just like you bought a rug. And a table. And a shower curtain. And a bath mat.
I remember you used to do DIY projects many moons ago, before you went all hollywood on us.
YoungHouseLove says
Better get used to it, we have a whole house to fill! Haha, just kidding. Did you see this morning’s post? It was a zero dollar demo/DIY project. And here’s a $5 art project we shared a few posts before that. We’ll definitely admit that our new house has a few completely empty rooms/walls/bathrooms that we plan to shop for, which is why we’ve been saving our pennies for months (since announcing in September that we were house hunting). We even sold our sofas on craigslist for money to put towards new things (and also plan to build some stuff from scratch, like a sofa table for behind Karl). I guess that makes us really Hollywood huh? Haha. But feel free to skip a post (or even our blog as a whole) if it doesn’t do it for ya. This is just our home improvement “diary” full of all the mundane things that go on at our house (from shopping to painting and beyond) so there’s no pressure to follow along if we annoy you!

For what it’s worth, I really like the posts about the great shopping deals!
Steph says
Really, Morgan? If the post is so pointless, why bother wasting the time to reply?
I, for one, love reading these shopping posts. Can you believe I had never heard of West Elm before reading your blog??? I know, I know, insanity! Besides, you know if you didn’t post about where you bought these new items, you’d have 700 comments with inquiries about where the thing came from.
Great job as always (on handling snarky comments & finding awesome deals for the house)!
karen says
Oh my gosh…’Morgan’ has got to be a spam…because i don’t know how anyone can be so rude.
If ‘Morgan’ is a real person…than he/she should know jealously is the root of all evil.
Sara says
Sherry, I have to say thanks for acting human in reaction to that comment I’m often shocked by how well you do well with criticism on things. I’m not sure how a $65 mirror classifies as hollywood. Yes, I’ll be the first to admit I’m jealous you and your husband have parlayed remodeling your home into a full time career. But then I remember my husband doesn’t love remodeling the way I do. And I buy a mirror at HGs that I think (immediately looks like Clara’s mirror) and I run home to check out your site to see how to spray paint it……. My husband and I don’t have the design eye, even if we’re writers. Keep it up
Paige Jones says
I mean I love your DIY posts just as much as the next person, BUT I also love how thrifty you guys are. It’s not easy to decorate a house while trying to budget at the same time and I think some people have a hard time grasping the idea of shopping SALES and being patient and not always buying the most expensive thing. Not only do you guys teach awesome DIY projects, but you also expose your readers to the art of thrifting. Your house is gorgeous, but you aren’t breaking the bank to achieve it either, which is very challenging.
But yeah, if someone doesn’t enjoy these posts, then they can just look elsewhere.
JoDi says
Holy cow, don’t ever stop posting about your shopping excursions! I’ve discovered all kinds of new places to shop for home items because of you. And the things you find give me great ideas. Half (or more) of the work of decorating a house is hunting down the exact things you want to put in it, whether it’s online, in a retail store, yard sales, consignment shops . . .
Mary Ann says
You should have told whining Morgan to go elsewhere and not have wasted your verbage on her! The mirror is great-we have a 40’inch one, similar to yours, over the white dresser in our bedroom. Love the industrial look .Can’t wait to see this room develop – A+ so far.

Haha, must be those spy fantasies! That’s just our wonky parquet floor. Don’t worry, sometimes I have spy fantasies too. When I was little I wanted to start a band called Espionage and we’d all be rock stars with secret lives as spies. Covert name, right? Haha. No one would ever guess we were actually spies. Haha.
