I thought it might be fun to walk around the house with the Flip cam and show you guys how each room can look on an average day. You know, before we pick the clothes up off the floor, put away Clara’s toys, and fold the big blankets that we snuggle under on the sofa. So here’s an impromptu house tour (while John and Clara ducked out to the post office and grocery store) in all of its average everyday glory:
Things to note:
- Ugh, I have a cold. Sorry about my annoying voice. Who am I kidding, my voice annoys me even when I’m not crazy congested.
- I’m terrible at walking around, talking, and holding a camera (too much multitasking, pardon the Blair Witch Project-esque jolts).
- For those who requested updated office photos in this post, you can see it in 3-D (well, almost) in the vid.
- Burger is so cute. I love how he comes running in and steals the show (and is later seen relaxing in the window).
- I have no idea why I take the time to explain Clara’s music class kit. It’s so weird what you think is noteworthy.
- You can sneak a peek at John’s behind the sofa console project’s progress. Oh and when I say it’s not level and it slopes away from the wall, it’s because our floors are slanted, not because John’s work is shoddy (more pics and details on the big console build this afternoon).
- Yes, my ceramic pooch is still sitting on on the back patio. I just can’t bring myself to let go of him yet. But I’m working up to it. One day at a time.
- You can sneak a peek at the two 30 x 40″ canvases that we got super cheap at Michael’s (more details on our plans for them soon).
- I have no idea why at the end I’m talking about other rooms while walking back through the house and aiming the camera at the dining room and the kitchen (it’s just odd to show the kitchen and say “the messy playroom”). It’s official: I’m no Spielberg.
- My dramatic ending on my purse is beyond weird. What is wrong with me?
Here’s some bonus “ordinary day” behavior. We always tell people how Burger sleeps like a human (with his head on the pillow and his body tucked under the covers) but people rarely believe just how hilarious this is. So here’s some visual evidence that I snapped this morning. I promise this isn’t staged. John got up first today, so I reached over and took some pics after Burger crawled up from the bottom of the bed to “steal” John’s place and sleep in at least four more hours. What a life.
What about you guys. What would people see if you randomly shot photos (or a shaky nausea-inducing video) of your house before cleaning up? Anything embarrassing out there like a teddy bear in the bed or a man-thong on the floor? Thank goodness I put John’s leopard one away before filming that video. Haha. Kidding. Sorry honey. I know just reading that is gonna make you all flustered.

If someone shot a video of our flat without a quick tidy up, they would see “clothes mountain” in the bedroom and too many mugs all over the place.

This absolutely made my day. THANK YOU.
(and btw, everything still looks lovely.)
Cindy@Cinsarah says
Thanks for taking the time to show what your home looks like on a regular day, I completely relate to this video, my kids toys seem to live in our living room, I’m starting to think they walk by themselves at night and end up in the living room lol
Meghan Solberg says
Our dog, Finch, sleeps the same way! We love it, and usually tuck him in if the covers aren’t already up to his chin :)
Tracy says
Sherry and John, I love your blog! Glad to see you are “normal”. Thanks for keeping it real! :)
Jen @ The Decor Scene says
I love knowing that you guys don’t have a mess free house. Makes me feel a lot better about ours. Our mess is usually in the kitchen and in the spare bedroom where I drop my cloths at night and usually don’t pick them up until the weekend. I put them in there because I’m apparently too lazy to just fold or hang what doesn’t need to go into the hamper. LOL!!! And of course the office is still a mess, but I’m getting there. That is our “dump” room in our house. There is always one room that is the dump room. ;)
I’ve carried around small pieces of laminate flooring, paint chips, small material pieces….it helps when you are shopping. Love that you always have Sue the napkin in your pocketbook.
Love the pics of Burger in bed. Way too cute!!!
Stephanie says
LOVE this post. I love when people keep it real! I especially appreciated the clothes on the chair in your bedroom. It reminded me of the last time you posted pics of your bedroom, I was going to ask how you keep the chair so clean because I can never get the hubby to hang up anything! But now, maybe I’m just too hard on him…no, can’t be that :)As for my own video, it will never happen because I could never make it through the living room without breaking my neck on something laying on the floor!
Meagan says
My dog does the exact same thing… except she’s a 125 pound Great Dane, and sometimes she doesn’t wait for us to get out of bed. Some mornings I wake up nose to nose with her. Nothing like dog breath in the morning! :)
Now I really want to know what is planned for the canvases (canvi?) – I saw them at Michael’s for 60% off the other day and almost bought them. I now have saver’s remorse. :(
mhd says
Thank you, you just made me feel 100 times better about the typical state of my house. I have a little one about Clara’s age and I often look at your pictures and wonder how you manage to keep things so pristine. I appreciate knowing I’m not alone!
Carrie says
OMG – Is Sherry’s hair down?! Haha :-) Is that Method counter top cleaner in your kitchen? I love that brand – especially the Lavender scent.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, don’t even know why it was there. I think John used it for something and then didn’t stick it back under the sink yet. But later it had mysteriously been put away. Love when that happens! Haha.

Your poor ceramic dog–he looks good outside, like he is protecting the house. I seriously think he needs to be an outdoor planter with a fern or spider plant on his head. Almost like a big chia pet. :)
Karla @ {TheClassyWoman} says
Thanks for keepin’ it real!

Your family is so super cute! I love this post. And I love that you showed your computer with the comments up and reading them! It’s nice to see you enjoying how much your readers appreciate your site! :-)

Before picking up my home, you would see my 6 yr old son’s Legos scattered ALL OVER. I am not exaggerating…they are everywhere. I have bins and baskets strategically placed throughout the house to corral them each day. As for my 12 yr old daughter, she leaves a trail of books wherever she goes. If she’s not singing, she’s reading…at the dining table…at the kitchen table…on the couch…in the foyer…in the office…She goes through new ones then goes back to old favorites.
By the way…I am NOT complaining about either of these things! He wants to build robots for a living and she wants to teach engineering…and sing!
So we encourage these “messes”
Elizabeth says
You totally sound like Kunis!!! Feel better Sherry and I love seeing how real your house is everyday!
Christine says
My dog totally sleeps like your dog! He gets up with our alarm paws at me to burrow into the sheets during the snooze and then when my husband and I get up he stays in bed, head on pillow and watches us get ready, just like a little kid! Great post!
Liliana says
Love how real you are! I always felt bad for my house being ‘messy’. Its just my husband and I but we have 5 dogs! Now I don’t feel bad…I realize my house is actually pretty clean and ‘organized’ = )
Thanks for sharing!

Love this! Thanks for sharing. I was starting to think…you had a secret maid that we didnt’ know about. My kitchen looks like that on ANY GIVEN DAY! I need to find ways to keep the pesky mail off the counters and those darn keys. My counters usually are the first place i dump everything! :)
Stacey says
Ha! My chihuahua sleeps the same way! :D
Nicole says
Had another quick question. I’m really easily annoyed by frumpy sofas. You know, the kind where you stand up…and the sofa kind of sags where you were sitting. Is this happening with Karl? I kind of noticed it…when you shot the part of where you were sitting/laying last night…it seems a big, saggy. And…since you’ve had Karl for some time now…what are the reviews? I was considering getting a Karl….
YoungHouseLove says
We love Karl a ton! His slipcovers are about 100 times tighter and less baggy than our much pricier Pottery Barn sofa and whenever they get a bit loose (since I’ve been sick I’ve been laying on the sofa a bit more than normal- haha) I just pop them in the wash since they’re 100% washable. So easy! Keeps Karl looking nice and tight. Haha. Like a quick facelift.

You and the fam are just …..NORMAL!!!
Thank God!!!
Love this video as it shows the Petersik fam is really “just like the rest of us”!!!
Get well soon!

this may have been mentioned, or you have already considered it, but something you could do with your ceramic dog is break him into pieces for a mosaic… that way you can keep him around in a different form so you wouldn;t have to let go completely… just a thought!
and love the tour~ it’s always a plus to see other people’s messes! i like the earlier comment above comparing it to models in magazines vs real life.
Kate says
I’m on a quick break at work so can’t watch the video yet, but the Burger pictures actually had me laughing out loud. So funny and cute!
lindsay says
I think you should put a little top hat on the doggie (the ceramic one) to cover up the hole. He was already a distinguished dog, now he will be even more distinguished!

I seriously love the picture of Burger curled up under the covers. My fur baby (a 5 lb Yorkie) loves to snuggle with me in bed under the covers in the morning. It’s actually my excuse for not making the bed most days! =)

thanks for sharing…glad to see the house isn’t always in perfect condition! hope you feel better soon.

Love this. So great that you guys really do “keep it real.” Although I bet you won’t want to do this a couple kids down the road;). Haha!

That was a nice treat. Thanks for sharing your “real” world.

Hey… did you unpaint your crazy in the middle of nowhere light shade? I thought you painted it teal?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah we wiped it down with a damp cloth because it kept casting a blue haze on that corner of the room in photos. Thank goodness it was so easy to reverse!

We’re sick at our house today (and yesterday–stomach bug, ugh!), and I had been wondering if you guys ever get sick. Thanks for showing a glimpse of your humanity (which is something you’re always good at, by the way:)
If you came over to my house today, you would see various piles of outgrown/out-of-season clothing that I stopped sorting when our yuckiness started early yesterday. (In general, though, I DO have trouble making sure everyone (family of five) gets stuff mostly back where it goes (and that the stuff has a home in the first place.) Your everyday clutter is very minimal compared to mine:)
Hope you (and we) get to feeling better soon! Isn’t spring sickness the pits?
P.S. “Dramatic Purse Fade-Out” really made me smile!

Burger is so funny! Our chihuahua, Lulu sleeps exactly like that. Sometimes she sleeps on her back and her front paws are tucked over the blankets. It always cracks me up!
Ashley says
I can’t believe you call them boob lights too! I have been calling them that forever!! Anywho… we have a broken light in our kitchen, because I REFUSE to replace the light with a boob light, I hate them. I need good light in the kitchen though…. This is why I’m stuck with light bulbs sticking out of a hole. To me its better then boob.
jamie says
THANK GOODNESS!!! I feel so much better about myself and my home now. There are always blankets out on the couch and my husbands clothing in any given spot (socks on the dining table… REALLY?!?!)
hope you feel better soon!
Jacqueline says
Love your tour. Also, thank you for the info on the coupon for Michael’s. I got a bunch of white photo frames to fill up our empty walls and it was already 40% off and got the additional 25% off. What a great deal thanks to you!!
Ashley Ez says
Hehehehe.
Our 75lb greyhound would do the same thing if we let him. He is ALWAYS stealing pillows and blankets off of the couch to make his bed a little more human like. And yep, head on the pillow, body (mostly) covered up.
Katie says
Looks just like our house on a normal day! We’re not clean everything up at the end of each night people… More like major weekly cleanup & reset on the weekend..
Must add that my dog loves your voice, Sherry. He is glued to every video you make, and even cried when you showed your ceramic dog. He must have sensed your heartache. ;)

Haha. I love that your dog gets me.

Thanks for posting this, I’m encouraged! My mission today is to clean clean clean, but man, with a baby it’s a whole different animal. Your place still looks pretty good, even “average!” Mine = not. :) But it’ll get there!

I kinda love seeing your house ‘messy’. And is the counter top in your kitchen St. Cecilia?
YoungHouseLove says
We have no idea! Haha. We inherited it with the house so we sadly don’t know his proper name. It’s basically tan and cream with some brown flecks.
xo,

liz @ btb says
I’m pretty sure we have the same stuff in our kitchen. I’m not a fan of OUR coutertop piece. It’s seems to be a lot more speckly than yours. I let my hubby choose because I was tired of arguing with him about what color granite to purchase. THEN I read your post on ‘not compromising on big purchases together, because you don’t want to resent the other person for getting their way’. Now I tell all of our friends who are just purchasing houses (4 in the past 2 months!) to never give in because you’ll be stuck looking at something you hate every single day.
Sorry for the rant. I wish I had read your advice sooner!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw sorry Liz! Maybe it’ll grow on you! Or for some big anniversary he’ll surprise you with something new that you love. Seems fair. Haha.

Long time follower…first ever comment. My wife and I love your house and the pictures of Burger are hilarious. What personality!? Do you know if they have any more of those Parsons chairs available?
YoungHouseLove says
We have heard they pop up on craigslist now and again so definitely keep an eye out.

ah, love to know your normal! haha
okay, two questions…
1. what was in the left corner in the office? looked like fabric of some sort??
2. did i see an apple green parsons chair in the “play room”?
YoungHouseLove says
1. That’s a discount bolt of printed fabric that we got for the dining room windows. Haven’t done anything with it yet, but details when I do!
2. That’s a little in-progress thing going on. When it’s done we’ll definitely blog all about it!

I have a question that is a little off topic, and I’m sure you’ve answered before… But what kind of camera/photo programs do you use? We have our second baby due in a few weeks and I want to get something that takes great every day photos like you always show. Thanks so much!!
YoungHouseLove says
We use a Flip HD video camera (so simple and small) and a Nikon D3000 camera (with some photoshop help to crop things, brighten shots, etc).

My 55 pound bulldog loves to sleep on the bed with me and usually ends up along my back with his HEAVY head resting on the side of my face (I sleep on my side). When I get up he just stays there and shifts his head to my pillow. I must love that dog a lot because he snores like a freight train and it’s RIGHT IN MY EAR!
I know some people are grossed out by animals in the bed, but I figure that’s why God made washing machines. Nothing beats a nice snuggly sweet dog. LOL
Elizabeth says
Okay…I have now been forced to share photos of my own sleeping dog. Haha!
This one is on my old couch…pillow sleeping (told you that head was HEAVY!).

Then we have what I call “the baby pig”.
http://asso.in/url/31t
And the “I may be old but I still like to suck on a toy while I sleep” pose.

And for good measure…one of him awake…barely…and yes, I think that’s a McDonald’s cup on the counter in the background.

You are brave Sherry…not sure I could show people our house on an average day, haha! Great “keeping it real” tour! I also noticed that Clara is a “Melissa & Doug” fan…maybe you already know this, but I find a ton of their toys at the Marshalls on Broad (Merchant Walk Shopping Center) for cheap. Sometimes they have nothing, while others I hit the jackpot. The $17 toys are like $11 and the $12 puzzles are always around $7.
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! I recently learned that from John’s mom. So awesome.

This post gives me one more reason to *love* Sherry (not in a creepy way, I promise). So funny!

You are real people!
My dog sleeps with her head on the pillow but she doesn’t like to be under the covers. She has a double coat and I have an electric mattress pad so it’s probably a little warm for her. She also likes to put her head on my shoulder or spoon me or just share my pillow. It is cute now but she is pushing 45 pounds and is only 5 months old so in another 5 months it might not be so cute. :)
My house is just cluttery. Mail all over the table, clothes thrown around the bedroom, the chair in the bedroom has the throw pillows and the comforter on it right now because I was going to wash it Saturday and just never got around to it. Clean laundry all over the guest bed (although it is nicely laid out) and more clean laundry in the little bedroom. I need a laundry room! And the requisite dishes in the sink. I wish I had a dish hider- err- dishwasher. There are also paint cans randomly placed in the kitchen and hall. No storage. Good thing my house is charming!
Are you selling your duvet cover that you had in your master? I love it! Wish I lived close enough to buy it!
YoungHouseLove says
We’re not quite sure where that will land. If we ever craigslist it or ebay it we’ll post the link with everyone for sure!

Great thanks! I am pretty sure it wants to live in my guest room. :)

One of my cats sleeps like a human; head on pillow, body under covers. I’ve never caught him in the act, though. Have you thought about a jaunty little hat for your greyhound? It would hide the piece that’s still missing and would be tres chic!
Susan says
This is one of my fav posts. Always fun seeing how folks really live on a day-to-day basis. And your commentary was so cute. I love the ooooh over the finished picture wall….and, of course the “dramatic” end on the purse. :) Blame it on the cold medicine…you are taking cold Rx, right? Kidding.
Burger is hilarious! Feel better!
