So it’s been exactly a month since move-in day and it’s shameful to think that we haven’t shared a video tour of the place yet. We officially accept a virtual slap on the wrist. Or a noogie if you’re old school. But no indian burns. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
Anyway, after unpacking, list making, nursery painting, door frosting, bi-fold removing, duvet ordering, bed-assembling, washer & dryer hunting, shelf removing, Christmas tree decorating, playing with ceramic animals built-in bookcase arranging, built-in bookcase painting, dealing with a plethora of mirrors (some in very odd places), bedroom painting, Christmas tree dismantling, and waiting for our new washer & dryer to arrive (update: they’re here! more details later!) we finally broke out the Flip and took it for a quick spin around the new digs. Watch it below or here on YouTube (and if you’re at work, you can mute it and still get a pretty good idea of what we’re dealing with). Oh and I wholeheartedly apologize for Blair Witching you guys. I’m not exactly slow and steady with a camera:
Since it would take hours to discuss all of the half-baked projects on our to-do list, this tour is meant to give you a better sense of the layout and how each room connects (while providing some never before seen angles of rooms and shots of things like our closet, our kitchen sink, etc). When it comes to what we’ll do in the future (along with how we’ll do it and why we’ll do it) we honestly like to take those things one day at a time to keep from getting too overwhelmed.
So hopefully you’ll enjoy a look around our house without tossing out any “what are your plans for this sink/bed/wall/room/window?” or “are you keeping/painting/replacing those fill-in-the-blank” or “have you considered doing such & such?” questions. Not because we don’t love your inquisitive nature, but because in truth we’re most likely not set on anything yet and have tons of ideas swirling around in our heads. Which is why we’re so set on taking things as they come and blogging about each and every project & decision that we make as we tackle them in real-time (instead of doing a lot of future conjecturing). Things always change along the way anyway.
Oh and we figured we’d include the rough floor plan that we shared before moving in for easy cross reference. You know, if you’re the cross-referencing type (I’m not. Hubs is). Let the record state that some rooms are labeled differently in the pic below than they’re called in the video (ex: we labeled the future dining room as “living room” below, since that’s what it is now. But there’s more info over here (and another floor plan that reflects how we plan to change the layout/rooms as we go).
Maybe once we’re further along with the transformation, we’ll shoot a more formal house tour without me behind the wheel. Again I apologize for all of the spinning, shaking, and other nausea inducing maneuvers. Fingers crossed that nobody lost their lunch croissant/cheerio’s/pop tart/egg sandwich on the tour. But if you did, at least it was virtual. Which means no clean up on my end. Can’t complain.
Cait @ Hernando House says
Sweet, gotta love a video tour, especially when it’s easily cross-referencable!

I love a good video tour! Thanks for posting this!!

Love the new house….
Does Clara sleep without a blanket, isn’t she cold?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Amy,
Nope, we don’t have any blankets in the crib for suffocation risk. Doctor’s orders. But she’s an amazing sleeper (and we figure if she was cold she wouldn’t sleep like a little champ).

Thanks for the tour. I can’t wait to see what you do with that little guest bath. We have one just like it, although sadly it’s the master bath. Or should I say “baster” bath?
Amandelin says
It’s lovely! Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
katie @ k+b says
sherry youre so cute. you guys have been hard at work in a months time! nice work… can’t wait to see more projects!
Julie says
Love it! Sherry, you made my morning with the house tour. I especially like the sunroom, and Clara’s room. Can’t wait to see what you do with the house. Have a great day!
Micha says
Thank you for the walking tour – I loved it and I can’t wait to see what projects you and John will come up with over the next couple of years.
Quiana says
Thanks for the house tour! Totally put everything in perspective =) And about the no blanket thing on the comment above, yeah our 5mth old doesn’t sleep with a blanket either. We use sleepsacks for her though when it gets chilly and they work great!
Maya says
Such a cute house tour!! The house is looking great too :) I also really get a sense for the colors of everything on the tour, and I think I like that dark frame on the mirror in the bedroom window more now…
favorite moment of the tour: when you say that’s where a BIG tv will go some day and you pan ALL THE WAY up the wall… haha… how big are you planning to go? ;)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Maya,
Hahah, I realized that watching it back. Right now we’re envisioning some sort of media hutch (with shelving that surrounds the tv) so we’re definitely not planning to get a supersized floor to ceiling tv or anything. Haha.

Soooo….I want your house. :) Thanks for the tour!! You guys have it looking awesome already and it is going to be beyond fantastic when you’re done!
Krista says
Love it! We moved into a new apartment around the same time you guys moved into your new house. Our new place has cement floors (brr!) and we used the sheepskins on either side of our bed too. :)
Kim says
I’ve a question for you guys. I’ve noticed on each one of your videos you have music and you’re able to add photos into the video. How do yall do that? I’m not quit pro like yall, but I’d at least I’d like to know how to add music to my videos. The hubs got me a flip for xmas and I set up an account with Vimeo… whats next?
Thank you and love your blog.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kim,
We both work on macs, which come with a program called iMovie which is what we use to edit our videos and add music and captions and all that. We definitely recommend it if you have a mac!

Best last paragraph ever!
Hey, will you pay me a dime for every time someone asks a “what are your plans for this sink/bed/wall/room/window?” or “are you keeping/painting/replacing those fill-in-the-blank” or “have you considered doing such & such?” question?
heh heh
Was there a noise machine on in Clara’s room?
Love that you guys kept her aqua chandelier. It’s capiz, right? Do you know how they produce those in colors like that? Is capiz usually a light color? I have some capiz shell circles, but don’t like what they’re hanging on. I’m wondering if I could paint them somehow. Any thoughts?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Beth,
Yup, Clara loves her sound machine so much we even travel with it (it’s actually just an iPod dock and we play a white noise CD on a loop). As for how they produce colored capiz shells, we honestly have no idea. Maybe they dye them somehow? It’s a very translucent finish so we don’t think it’s paint. Unless it’s some sort of super thing watercolor application or something. Maybe try some sheer craft store paint and see what happens?

So much fun! Thanks for the tour and our little one didn’t get a blanket to sleep with until she was well over a year (hmm, maybe even almost 1 1/2?). Clara certainly does seem to be an awesome sleeper – I am very impressed that she didn’t wake up during the tour. That would not have worked on our end – go Clara!
Alyssa says
It seemed like there was a humming noise in Clara’s room. Does she sleep with some kind of white noise?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Alyssa,
Yup, Clara loves her sound machine so much we even travel with it (it’s actually just an iPod dock and we play a white noise CD on a loop). We figured getting a small iPod dock was more mulit-purpose than buying a large sound machine since as she grows up we can play kids music on it for her and all that good stuff.

Wonderful tour, Sherry! You guys inspired me to paint my bedroom sherwin Williams “reddened earth” over the holidays. I decided to go bolder on the paint colors this year. Enjoy the house!
Jennifer @ Milk & Honey Mommy says
Sherry,
Yes! That was a little weird watching it w/o volume (my speakers aren’t working), but the tour was so cool. I would ask some questions, but I figure you probably answered a lot and I just couldn’t hear it. Thanks for the views out of the windows (especially the kitchen) because I love windows and all that natural light stuff. I also love the fireplace in the kitchen. Three bathrooms…I use to hate cleaning them, but I miss the convenience of having three bathrooms; enjoy!
Melissa @ HOUSEography says
Wow! You certainly have your work cut out for you but the house is going to be awesome. Can’t wait to see how things look when you start ripping into walls and doorways!
Beth says
Loved the tour! I love all of the natural light you guys get. That’s one of those things that just *makes* a house for me!!
So much potential but it is already a wonderful place that you are starting with! Congrats and thanks for sharing.
We move in 2 weeks and this gets me excited to get in there and get to work.
Emily says
I can’t believe how big your house is! I can’t imagine having so much space. What will you do with it all?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Emily,
It’s definitely a lot more house than we’re used to, but our plan is to grow into it and make it our own as our family grows! And now John’s poor sister isn’t the only one who can host family gatherings – there are 16 of us in the primary family (not even counting cousins, just brothers and sisters and kiddos)!

Thanks for letting us in your house! The tour was great -shaking and all! LOL!
I saw where you commented on my “bathroom nook” picture on your FB page. After seeing your tour it really was like deja vu! I *almost* felt like I was in my own room! :)
Your house is great – I can see now why you guys are so in love!

Hi Sherry ~ Your vintage yellow tiled guest bathroom is exactly like ours. Same yellow tile and built in towel rack. I’m so curious to know your plans for that. We’re stuck with the tile at this point and actually, it’s kind of growing on me. Can’t wait to see your “magic” in that room.
With Admiration,

Love your sweet home! I can’t wait to see how you decorate it all up!
Stephanie says
Awesome house! One thing I could tell from the video is that the previous owners must have kept their house meticulously clean! Looks great, I can see why you fell in love with it instantly.
KarenC says
Great tour. The small things you’ve already done have made a great difference. My favorite so far is painting the backs of the bookcases. I can’t wait to see what else you do.
What do you think your first BIG project is going to be?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey KarenC,
Probably something with the kitchen and that opening between the future dining room. Not sure though!

Emily says
Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Natalie Portman, Sherry? As I listened to your voice I couldn’t get that out of my mind!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Emily,
Yes! In fact back when I lived in NYC and worked at Express during college someone came up to me and whispered “I know who you are” and, long story short, didn’t believe me when I said I wasn’t Natalie Portman. “You even sound just like her- I know it’s you!” she exclaimed. Weirdest moment of my life thus far. She could not be convinced otherwise.
And now three of my friends think I look like Mila Kunis (also from Black Swan). So funny!

You guys should totally …
Just kidding! ;)
JAG says
I probably missed this somewhere in your earlier posts, but what is the total square footage of your house? It looks awesome!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey JAG,
It’s around 2400. Totally huge for us (we’re used to our old 1300 square foot ranch) but we needed more space since we all work from home and plan to grow our family, so we’re hoping we’ll use more rooms and make it feel like ours as we grow/go!

Kimberly Bernhardt says
Thanks for the tour Sherry!
I cant wait to see all the fun projects. One I am really looking foward to is how you will create the feel of an entry way. I have the same problem so I have left my front room a formal living room for the past two years.
annabelvita says
Thanks for that Sherry! It looks great and the layout is a smidge different to how I’d imagined.
The pile of baskets and other small storage in the future playroom has me all jealous (as well as plenty of other things).
(My sort of sister in law uses an app on her iphone as a white noise machine when they travel, fyi).
Sarah says
Holy Cow Sherry — you are one brave woman!!!! I NEVER EVER go in my daughters’ rooms when they are sleeping. I did it once, on a really cold night to cover one with a blanket and she woke up and spazzed out and took forever to get back to sleep. At 10-months old they only recently started sleeping through the night (mostly) and not needing tons of rocking to get to sleep….so I guess I am a little scarred :) Great tour though!
Melissa @ HOUSEography says
Forgot to ask – How warm is your sunroom? Could you use it in the winter? I noticed you keep the slider from the living room closed so wondered if it is lacking in insulation. Would also love to see the basement in a future video! My hubby would be setting up a workshop down there before anything else could be touched!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Melissa,
It actually has it’s own heat pump in there so with the flick of a switch it can be used all year round (heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer). So far we haven’t used it much except for Clara’s weekly pics though. I bet we’ll live in there in the spring/summer/fall when we can open all the windows and doors!

What a great house!!!!! Thanks for the tour!
Andrea says
Thanks for the tour! Clara’s room was just darling. You definitely achieved that sense of a calm oasis for her. Makes me want to curl up and take a nap right now : )
Sarah says
Oh and on the non-baby side of things — I love the “alleyway” and can’t wait to see what you guys do with that area. I love little nooks and surprise places like that….could totally see it being a little secret garden for Clara!
Shannon says
Thanks for the tour!I check your blog every day to see what fun new project you might be into and ideas for my new house! Do you have any idea where to find an affordable capiz chandelier? I’m not sure if they are going out of style or something but I have looked everywhere for one to put in my new dining room and can hardly find any and the few I’ve seen are over $200. Just wondered if you had any ideas?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Shannon,
Yes! World Market has them very affordably! Around $60 I think. Hope it helps!

Wow! I am in love with the layout of the new house, seem so big! I think it is going to be such a fun project, cannot wait to see how it all goes. P.S. my 3 year old son decided to watch with me and commented on every room- he is in love with house tours (can you tell he is the son of a realtor??)

Wonderful house tour, precious sleeping baby, and a very brave mommy to enter said sleeping baby’s room :)
Thanks for sharing!

Wow. That was great!
Question: What is the site you used to create your floor plan?
I need to do that for our fixer-upper/blog… I’m not sure if the current blueprints I have posted are enough of a visual.
Thanks in advance!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Karen,
We created the floor plan for free on floorplanner.com.

Wow! I am so psyched for you both (all)! SO many wonderful possibilities there, and the best part it is so livable right now! Can’t wait to see more! Cheers!

Okay – I tried to make sure this wasn’t asked already and I am apolgie if I missed it. So was the family room, sunroom, and master bed/bath all added in the 70’s? And what exactly did that balcony used to be? So much space! And it has so much potential!
I also love, love the original bathrooms!
YoungHouseLove says
Hi Natalie,
The balcony didn’t use to be anything from what we know – it got added with the addition in the 70s. The previous owners said they had dreamed of putting a hot tub out there one day but never got around to it. It is sort of a weird space, but we have a few ideas for down the road…

i can already see how your style will mesh with your home! Such a nice house with a lot of charm!
Barb says
Your house tour was great and we anxiously await the coming projects as you make it your own space. You certainly should be commended for all that you have done thus far, what with having a baby to care for, holidays to get through, moving in DECEMBER…. It looks great so far, and I must say that the biggest project I am looking forward to seeing is the kitchen remake. I can’t wait to see what will become of the paneled walls and what color you will paint the area. I know it will look wonderful upon completion.
I think the thing I enjoy most is all the small things you do that of course are part of the big picture. BUT…its those little things that make it ROCK!!! Like the door removals, the mirrors…gone and the painting. It just is how you can make this into “YOUR” space and get rid of things you don’t like. Some of which are like….WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
Keep it up Sherry and John and thanks so much for letting us come into your house and see the progress. Look forward to your blog daily as it is my way to start my day!!!
B.
Beth says
Thanks for the tour, Sherry! You are too cute. :) I’m so excited to see how the house shapes up. I’m glad it’s so big and that we’ll be able to see how it changes as your family grows. Love it!
Kristina says
Having space to host your family is both a burden and a blessing. When we bought our house we became the “second” host house. Let me just say I’m glad they prefer my brother in law’s house still. My husband and I are both 1 of 5. His side has 13 grandchildren!
Angie @ The Country Chic Cottage says
Awesome tour!! I so need to do this one my blog…you may have just inspired me!! :)

Again! Again! *Applaud* Really, I’ll probably watch it again tonight when popcorn eating is more acceptable. Thanks for this morning treat.
