So it’s been exactly a month since move-in day and it’s shameful to think that we haven’t shared a video tour of the place yet. We officially accept a virtual slap on the wrist. Or a noogie if you’re old school. But no indian burns. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
Anyway, after unpacking, list making, nursery painting, door frosting, bi-fold removing, duvet ordering, bed-assembling, washer & dryer hunting, shelf removing, Christmas tree decorating, playing with ceramic animals built-in bookcase arranging, built-in bookcase painting, dealing with a plethora of mirrors (some in very odd places), bedroom painting, Christmas tree dismantling, and waiting for our new washer & dryer to arrive (update: they’re here! more details later!) we finally broke out the Flip and took it for a quick spin around the new digs. Watch it below or here on YouTube (and if you’re at work, you can mute it and still get a pretty good idea of what we’re dealing with). Oh and I wholeheartedly apologize for Blair Witching you guys. I’m not exactly slow and steady with a camera:
Since it would take hours to discuss all of the half-baked projects on our to-do list, this tour is meant to give you a better sense of the layout and how each room connects (while providing some never before seen angles of rooms and shots of things like our closet, our kitchen sink, etc). When it comes to what we’ll do in the future (along with how we’ll do it and why we’ll do it) we honestly like to take those things one day at a time to keep from getting too overwhelmed.
So hopefully you’ll enjoy a look around our house without tossing out any “what are your plans for this sink/bed/wall/room/window?” or “are you keeping/painting/replacing those fill-in-the-blank” or “have you considered doing such & such?” questions. Not because we don’t love your inquisitive nature, but because in truth we’re most likely not set on anything yet and have tons of ideas swirling around in our heads. Which is why we’re so set on taking things as they come and blogging about each and every project & decision that we make as we tackle them in real-time (instead of doing a lot of future conjecturing). Things always change along the way anyway.
Oh and we figured we’d include the rough floor plan that we shared before moving in for easy cross reference. You know, if you’re the cross-referencing type (I’m not. Hubs is). Let the record state that some rooms are labeled differently in the pic below than they’re called in the video (ex: we labeled the future dining room as “living room” below, since that’s what it is now. But there’s more info over here (and another floor plan that reflects how we plan to change the layout/rooms as we go).
Maybe once we’re further along with the transformation, we’ll shoot a more formal house tour without me behind the wheel. Again I apologize for all of the spinning, shaking, and other nausea inducing maneuvers. Fingers crossed that nobody lost their lunch croissant/cheerio’s/pop tart/egg sandwich on the tour. But if you did, at least it was virtual. Which means no clean up on my end. Can’t complain.

Thanks for sharing. That house has awesome bones! You all have done a lot in just one month. Just the inspiration I needed today to get busy painting my bathroom ~ and I’m closing in on 10 years in this house.

Sherry, that’s funny, my husband said you look like Mila Kunis, too!

Great tour!!

What was the noise as you entered Claire’s room? Do you have a white noise maker?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kim,
That’s Clara’s sound machine. She loves it so much we even travel with it (it’s actually just an iPod dock and we play a white noise CD on a loop). We figured getting a small iPod dock was more mulit-purpose than buying a large sound machine since as she grows up we can play kids music on it for her and all that good stuff.

Sherry, you are such an awesome blogger. I’ve attempted a blog, oh, lets say like four times now. I thought it would be cute for potential buyers to see everything done to the house when we go to sell (Summer 2012, C’mon Already!). But, I just don’t have the skills. Your video is adorable, and you and John make an amazing couple/ set-O-parents. I love knowing we get to share in your growth, and knowing you two will just keep growing! Good luck with all the projects in your new home & with the continued success of YHL.
Jenn says
First of all LOVE the new house and the fun tour. You guys have such great usable space to work with, I can’t wait to see what you do with it. And secondly, who in the world would think Natalie Portman was working at Express?! Too funny.
kim says
oh ya the house looks great….. so far so good.
Judy says
Love your new house! Can’t wait to see the transformations! I was wondering the day bed you have in the playroom where did you get that from? I absolutely love it!
Tnx

Thanks for showing us a video tour! I’m excited to see the house evolve as you make it more your own….and take us on the journey with you!
MichelleG says
love it! thanks so much for showing us around your new place! can’t wait to see that front room as a dining room with french doors and the open flow to the kitchen- genius!
ps: you guys have made me fall in love with brick ranches! my husband thanks you :o)
pps: are you guys budgeting for monthly supermarket flowers in 2011 or saving all your pennies for house projects? just being nosy (hehe for flower puns!)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey MichelleG,
So far we’re squirreling away all of our pennies for house projects (both big and small). We might get back into picking up some budget blooms when we feel a bit more settled and accomplished. Until then we’re gonna make ourselves work a little while longer before we give ourselves a nice floral reward!

Wow what a great house tour! It makes the whole thing make so much sense now! I am not always good at figuring out how something “feels” by looking at a picture or a layout, so this was awesome. Thanks!! I just totally adore your house. It is so beautiful!!
Hayley says
Holy moly – I had totally forgot about indian burns! Ouch. Man, I hated those.
Someone should add that to the “Ooh, burn!” comment that people say when you insult someone. It would be worse than a normal burn, “OOh, indian burn!”
I’m a nerd.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Hayley,
Haha, love it. Let’s start working it into our daily life and see if it catches on…

love it!!! Can’t wait to see all the great things you guys will do. Where did you get that cute chandy in Clara’s room?! It’s so elegant yet fun!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Leslie,
That’s from a local lighting store called The Decorating Outlet. Just 50 bucks for it!

i LOVE the house!! :) it seems so big. and you guys have so many cool projects to do. i’m pumped to see what’s next!
also the adorable sleeping baby shot in the video is just too cute.
bridget b. says
Clara is adorable! was there a white noise machine in her room? it sounded like there was some background noise.
As she gets older, do you think that she might try to pull on the curtains hanging near her bed? Is there a way to secure the rod so that it can’t be pulled down by little hands?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Bridget,
That’s Clara’s sound machine. She loves it so much we even travel with it (it’s actually just an iPod dock and we play a white noise CD on a loop). We figured getting a small iPod dock was more mulit-purpose than buying a large sound machine since as she grows up we can play kids music on it for her and all that good stuff.
As for the curtains, we’re not sure what kind of toddler Clara will be (we hear some kids don’t care to touch things like curtains and others hang on them like monkeys) but just in case we hung them using curtain clips, which would release just the fabric if they’re tugged on (so the clips and the rod will never come crashing down). Safety first!

Hey guys — The floor plan and the narration don’t match up! I got lost the second Sherry called it a “Dining room” and it’s marked as a “living room” on the plan.
…. I guess it would be just as confusing to put up the new plan, though… (architect here; I live on floor plans)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Caitlin,
If you click over to that post (we also linked to it) it should make more sense. We actually did a second floor plan over there of what it will look like someday, and that’s where we have the now-living-room labeled as a dining room (along with a ton of the other structural changes we want to make added in). Hope it helps!

I don’t know if you have already told this or not, but I couldn’t find the answer anywhere on your blog thus why I am asking…
Did you move far from your previous home?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jess,
Not very far at all. We did change neighborhoods, but we’re still in Bon Air (an area of Richmond with older homes and mature trees that we love).

Thanks for the tour! It looks great and you totally made the right call on making the old master into a guest room. Guests would definitely appreciate having their own bathroom.
Cheers!
Gretchen says
Great tour! Best part is the old master bedroom. It will be so great for your guests to have their own bath, b/c really, who likes to be staying at a friend’s house and have to do business in the hall bathroom? Ugh. Looking forward to all the updates!

Loved seeing this! Thanks for taking the time to film it!And I love that mini balcony, I can just imagine what I would do to it, can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Clara sleeps like I do, all twisted and sideways.

love the house tour, your home has such lovely spaces and great nooks. cant wait to see how it evolves…although i love the real time updates, as we are reno-ing too and it keeps it all in perspective.

Is it just me, or do you sound just like Natalie Portman on the tour video?

Wow! You guys have done so much in one month. I hadn’t realized just how busy you’ve been until you listed all the projects you’ve tackled since moving in. Awesome!
Heather @ REOlisticRenovation says
Love the white noise idea with the IPod dock. One of my hesitations on getting our baby hooked on a sound machine was I didn’t want to have to lug it around when we travel…or he enters his college dorm in 18 years…hey guys hope you don’t mind this thing…can’t sleep without it. :) Thank you for the tour!
Letty says
Just wanted to say I loved the tour :) And seeing Clara sleeping was such a cute surprise! Aww! Where was Burger, I wonder?…. The house looks great!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Letty,
We wondered that too, and then we rewatched it and spotted him! If you go back through and watch it, he’s actually sitting on the sleeper sofa in the office! Right on top of a pillow- all blended in!

Great video blog! My son (8 months too) watched some with me and let me just say, it’s a good thing Clara couldn’t hear all the noise on this end while she was sleeping so peacefully in her crib! Tell her happy 8 months on Friday from Dallas:) Thanks for the visual tour, great job Sherry!!

i have to say, i am a bit nauseous after watching that, but i had to sit in the blair witch project with my hand over my eyes because it was too much for this motion-sick prone girl.
but i stuck with it, because i had to see your space! it looks like you have some really, really great bones to work with and i’m looking forward to seeing the transformation in progress. i also have serious square footage envy! my apartment in queens is twice the size of my manhattan apartment, but your new house is still about three times larger than my current place! =)
carolinaheartstrings says
Great layout to that house. Cannot wait to see what you two come up with. Exciting.

everything looks so pretty!
we love audreys sound machine too!!! it drowns out every single loud noise going on in the house!
i would take your boxes of your hands but we are moving from baltimore TO richmond so we will already be there haha =)
Funnelcloud Rachel says
Love it – that house is huge! Feels like lots of room to stretch out! I can totally see why you upgraded to a larger place!
Barbara says
You have a lot of possibilities with that house! I can’t wait to see it once you start opening up stuff.
But I have to ask…you have TWO concrete dogs? In all of my travels, I’ve only managed to find ONE!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Barbara,
We have one concrete one (from a garden store) and one ceramic one (from HomeGoods). I just can’t say no. It’s a sickness.

Great tour! Thanks for all the details and bonus points for working in the adorable sleeping Clarea :) Can’t wait to see how you make it all “yours”.
Stacy says
Hahaha, I love the subtitles that clarify when your brain is going too fast for your words to catch up – I sometimes have that same problem! Must be a excited-about-projects-girl-thing.
Can’t wait to see the transformation as you guys tackle the projects! Love the house!
Melanie says
I’m glad others have mentioned the Natalie Portman soundalike because it threw me off a couple of times. Haha! I’m so glad I started reading this blog, it’s inspiring me to do something with my house (we stayed away from doing much because we thought we’d only live here for like 5 years; the economy has other plans). AND it opened me to Radon testing, which I had no idea about Radon. We tested our house and we’re good, so we’re still saving up for our living room redo. Anyway, that really had nothing to do with the video, I just wanted to see if I was the only one hearing the Natalie Portman voice as well.
Sue says
Thanks for the tour! The talk about Lars and Gina yesterday got me thinking about your last name. How do you pronounce it? Just like it sounds or is the accent on the middle syllable? I watched the re-air of your Nate Show episode and was hoping he was going to say your last name when he introduced you, but he used your first names (like the buds that you are).
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sue,
Just like the name “Peter” with the word “sick” at the end. Although people try to get really exotic with it (we get “pa-TURRR-sik” a lot, along with Petersilk or Petersnik). We just say “it’s like Peterson with “sik” at the end instead.” I always say my new last name was a lateral move, because my maiden name was Treitler (pronounced “trite- luhr”) which was just as confusing for everyone.

Loved the house tour but I am concerned that Clara was sleeping on her stomach!
Go here for more info:
http://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubs/safe_sleep_gen.cfm
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Bethany,
Fear not! We always always always always put her to bed on her back and know all about the “back to sleep” recommendation. She’s just almost 8 months now, so she rolls over on her own all the time. Pretty much as soon as we put her down. We cleared it with the doctor who declared it as perfectly safe and normal for her age (she started rolling around 6 months and preferred tummy sleep from around 7 months on). We definitely take SIDS very seriously (we also run a fan in her bedroom, don’t have bumpers, and don’t put blankets in her crib since they are also precautions against SIDS).

stacy says
Those bedrooms are soooo spacious…jealous! =)
Beth says
Oh my word. Some people are so ridiculous. What are you supposed to do, flip Clara over every time she rolls over onto her tummy? Talk about making you all crazy – she’d never sleep, so neither would you.
Helen says
Omigosh! We have the same granite in our kitchen! Still trying to figure out what accent color to do in there, but since we have stainless steel appliances we’re thinking about aluminum tile for a backsplash. No clue what to do for an accent color yet…
Oh, and Clara is crazy adorable!
laura says
Lovin’ the set up…can’t wait to see what you guys do with the kitchen!
Oh, and by the way…Clara is the cutest little gal! She looked so sweet sleeping in the video! I have baby girl fever (i have one son) if you can’t tell! :)

Great tour! Loved seeing the house and the layout! You guys have done a lot in only a month to make it your home! Great job!

I love the capiz shell chandelier in Clara’s room!! If you don’t mind me asking where did you get it from, did you DIY it or purchase it? I have been thinking about making one myself… I keep thinking that I can string together those beads myself and attach them to a metal ring and then the ceiling around an open light bulb. But then I second guess myself. I have not been able to find any picture of ones that I like so it is hard to get an idea of whether or not this is possible.
Love the house tour, everything makes more sense and feels more real now. Thanks for letting us enjoy the new place with you!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Chrissy,
We have seen a bunch of DIY capiz projects, so maybe google that to find some ideas?! It’s definitely doable. We got that chandelier a while back (for her first nursery, and took it with us) from a local lighting shop here in Richmond called The Decorating Outlet. It was on sale from $119 down to 50 bucks!

Great tour. It’s nice to know you ease into organizing the house – I tend to get into a mindset of having to do it all NOW, but am slowly realizing that’s just not realistic. :)
Is that just a fan running in Clara’s room or is it some kind of white noise machine? She’s adorable.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey JP,
It’s a noise machine (actually an iPod dock). Scroll back for that info!

I’m sorry, I can’t get past the “Indian Burn” part of your post. I hope you reconsider posting racist phrases (I’m sure you meant nothing by it, but still things like this really bother me as a Native person) in the future. The name is derived for the fact that the skin is left red = red skins. It has nothing to do with Indians and should not be used.
Just something to consider, Thanks.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Michelle,
Ack! We definitely didn’t mean any offense by the mention of an indian burn! It was just an old school reference that popped into my head after the word “noogie”! Again, so sorry if the use of that term turned you off or hurt your feelings in any way! That’s the last thing we intended!
