So it’s been exactly a month since move-in day and it’s shameful to think that we haven’t shared a video tour of the place yet. We officially accept a virtual slap on the wrist. Or a noogie if you’re old school. But no indian burns. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
Anyway, after unpacking, list making, nursery painting, door frosting, bi-fold removing, duvet ordering, bed-assembling, washer & dryer hunting, shelf removing, Christmas tree decorating, playing with ceramic animals built-in bookcase arranging, built-in bookcase painting, dealing with a plethora of mirrors (some in very odd places), bedroom painting, Christmas tree dismantling, and waiting for our new washer & dryer to arrive (update: they’re here! more details later!) we finally broke out the Flip and took it for a quick spin around the new digs. Watch it below or here on YouTube (and if you’re at work, you can mute it and still get a pretty good idea of what we’re dealing with). Oh and I wholeheartedly apologize for Blair Witching you guys. I’m not exactly slow and steady with a camera:
Since it would take hours to discuss all of the half-baked projects on our to-do list, this tour is meant to give you a better sense of the layout and how each room connects (while providing some never before seen angles of rooms and shots of things like our closet, our kitchen sink, etc). When it comes to what we’ll do in the future (along with how we’ll do it and why we’ll do it) we honestly like to take those things one day at a time to keep from getting too overwhelmed.
So hopefully you’ll enjoy a look around our house without tossing out any “what are your plans for this sink/bed/wall/room/window?” or “are you keeping/painting/replacing those fill-in-the-blank” or “have you considered doing such & such?” questions. Not because we don’t love your inquisitive nature, but because in truth we’re most likely not set on anything yet and have tons of ideas swirling around in our heads. Which is why we’re so set on taking things as they come and blogging about each and every project & decision that we make as we tackle them in real-time (instead of doing a lot of future conjecturing). Things always change along the way anyway.
Oh and we figured we’d include the rough floor plan that we shared before moving in for easy cross reference. You know, if you’re the cross-referencing type (I’m not. Hubs is). Let the record state that some rooms are labeled differently in the pic below than they’re called in the video (ex: we labeled the future dining room as “living room” below, since that’s what it is now. But there’s more info over here (and another floor plan that reflects how we plan to change the layout/rooms as we go).
Maybe once we’re further along with the transformation, we’ll shoot a more formal house tour without me behind the wheel. Again I apologize for all of the spinning, shaking, and other nausea inducing maneuvers. Fingers crossed that nobody lost their lunch croissant/cheerio’s/pop tart/egg sandwich on the tour. But if you did, at least it was virtual. Which means no clean up on my end. Can’t complain.
Brooke Buckingham says
I love the house! Thank you for doing the video tour, it really does help put things into perspective. And I just have to say you guys do such a wonderful job with this blog! You are so quick to answer everyone’s comments and that can’t be easy with a little one! You guys put your heart and soul into this blog and it shows! It’s really been a pleasure reading it. That said, I have yet another question for you guys! :) Any suggestions on how to attach pictures, or even a shelf on brick. I’m at a loss!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Brooke,
We use a masonry bit that can be attached to our drill and then we drill right into the mortar between bricks and sink a screw or two in there. But they also sell “brick clips” which can be clipped into the mortar (it the bricks stick out a bit more than the seams between them do) for easy picture hanging. Just check the hardware aisle at your local home improvement store. Hope it helps!

I see why you liked it so much! Good find, and lots of potential!

Sherry,
Not that the shaking is a big deal – but I just wanted to pass along a tip from my boyfriend. I bought him a hand-held camera like the Flip for X-mas. With it I bought him a mini tri-pod (like this http://store.theflip.com/en-us/products/Product.aspx?SKU=ATR1B)
He said that he will put the camera on the tri-pod even when shooting and walking. He just holds the tri-pod legs and he feels like it keeps the video a bit more stable.
Might look kind of funny but it’s worth a shot (haha I’m a sucker for puns)
P.S. Love the house tour.
Karla @ {TheClassyWoman} says
I loved your last home, but this one has a lot of potential and neat spaces, I love all those tall windows in the ‘sunnroom’ and even the alleyway can be turned into something charming which I know you’ll do. Looking forward to seeing all the progress!
Sami says
My link doesn’t work for the tripod. So go to Accessories – Tripods. thanks :)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip Sami! We’ll definitely have to check it out!

Love it. Your creativity always has me coming back for more tips and inspiration. Do you need a box spring for the Ed Bed or similar bed frames sold from that vendor? Their website does not specify. Though you might know since you just did the research for your new bed frame. Thanks
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Gina,
Nope! We don’t have a boxspring so we just purchased the wooden bed slats and the metal support beam that they recommended so we can just rest our mattress directly on those. Works like a charm! Try calling or asking in person about what you need- they’re usually super helpful!

I have a question completely off-track from this(I already commented earlier this morning) but I was wondering if you have continued your “Aquatober” thing. I just cut out my daily french vanilla cappucino and my beloved cherry dr. pepper a week ago today in hopes to cut calories and get healthy/thiner(I’m getting married this summer!) and was wondering if you were able to keep it up and how hard it was. I have gone out to eat a couple of times since then and it was very difficult to order lower calorie items and ordered water to drink for the first time ever at a restraunt lol. I am convinced I can do it but I long for my tasty drinks!
Sorry if I was rambling there. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hi Shannon,
Aquatober only lasts through October for me. I just love not-water beverages too much. But it’s always nice to demonstrate a little self control and try my hand at a detox for a month. It actually doesn’t get that hard after a week or two, so I could probably stick with it if I really wanted to. I’m just a man who hates to deny himself of the sweet bubbly pleasure that is the occasional soda or iced tea. But you can totally do it if you set your mind to it. Go tell that cherry dr. pepper who’s boss.

I had to sneak a few minutes during work to watch it, but I couldn’t wait. Thanks — that was a lot of fun to follow you around. It’s a big, beautiful house and now I totally have my sense of direction.
Ami @ beyondpeasandcarrots says
love it! Such good bones and layout! Can’t wait to see what you guys do with it :)

On a random note, I was looking at another blog and this made me think of y’all. Too bad it’s so expensive!

Hey Cait,
We’re so in love with that! Seriously, it’s gorgeous. So sad it’s mucho dinero.

Love the video! I actually laughed out loud when you toured Clara’s room because I recognized the sound–I use a humidifier in my daughter’s room (or right outside her door if the room doesn’t need extra humidifying) to buffer other noises while she sleeps. I really like the idea of using an iPod dock and white noise album, for obvious reasons–something I feel like a total dork for not thinking of myself already–and I will definitely be copying you guys and switching to that soon!
Christie says
Hi Sherry! First, I have to tell you that I LOVE the blog. It brings a big smile to my face when I see a new post. You and John are totally friends in my head. :-)
Okay, now that I have gotten my gushing out of the way, I have a quick question. While watching your house tour video I noticed what appears to be a lovely white platter sitting on top of your toilet. I have been looking for something similar like a tray but that platter is the perfect size for holding candles, soaps, etc. Where did you get it? It is the perfect shape and size!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Christie,
That’s just a serving dish from Target (from the dish aisle). Hope it helps!

I don’t know if you answered this before but how tall are your ceilings (specifically the master bedroom)? I have a little larger master bedroom but our ceilings are not very high so it seems a lot smaller for some reason. Not like ever lived anywhere with high ceilings but I feel cramped. Any ideas to make them appear higher?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jonel,
They’re all standard height (8 feet) but we like to hang curtains from the ceiling to the floor to add more vertical height and draw the eye up. Crown molding at the ceiling also seems to do the same thing!

Wow you house is big and you have lots to work with which is going to be so exciting for you all!! We just moved into our first house a little more than a month ago and have a boxes room as well as we slowly try to find a home for everything. Glad I am not the only one. Thanks for the tour!
Elaine says
Loved it. Thanks for taking the time to film and post Sherry. looks fantastic and so fun to follow your journey! :)

can’t wait to see the tour! I will be watching that tonight when I get home. Just checking in to see if your washer and dryer has arrived yet? We ordered our’s late last week, and they said it will be another week or so. Do you have yours yet?

Hey Katy,
Yes, they just arrived! Post about that coming up- hopefully this afternoon!

I love the house! Love it! This tour was great. I can really see the potential now. Actually this house would be perfect for me and my kids. :) I wish I could find something like it. Or I should say, I wish could afford something like it. lol
I can’t wait to see what you guys do.
Cait @ Hernando House says
I know! I was sad, too. Apparently it comes in turquoise, too. Some store or blogger needs to make a knock off, quick! Big thanks to Emily @ Merry Pad for posting that (not that my wallet shares the sentiments).
Ashley says
I seriously laughed at loud at your text on the video explaining how you called your master the “baster bedroom” and explained how the dining area was going to be your “future living room”. I was imagining a husband voice being dubbed over yours with the correct terms hehe.
I loved the video… it’s nice to see it all connected and get a better idea of how everything is related. I cannot wait to see how you open up the ‘future living room’ to the kitchen. :)
Chelsea in Richmond says
Someone asked where Burger was during filming but where was John? Haha
Thanks for the house tour, you have so much potential there!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Chelsea,
We has hiding in the playroom while I worked my way around the first half of the house and then he snuck into the office while I went down the hall to those bedrooms at the end. Stealthy guy. Although you can hear his cell phone ring while I’m in the kitchen.

Awesome tour! The house seems perfect for you all… with a lil work of course… but if there wasn’t any work, it wouldn’t be perfect for you! (did that make any sense?)
*love lil sleeping clara!*
If you’re ever in KY… totally hit me up! I’d love to go shopping with you all! :)
Bryanna S says
I recommend you check out the sectional sofa on organicgrace.com when you get around to doing that… its made with all natural materials so you don’t have the nasty offgassing and chemicals for everyone to breathe in while its sitting in your living room for years :) Its big and pretty :D
Jen says
Great job! Beautiful home! Precious sleeping baby! Thanks for sharing! Where was Burger, I didn’t see him under the covers! It’s so funny how utilitarian the bathrooms and kitchens were in the 60’s. My parents have a bathroom just like your guest bath – just the basics,it’s sad because it will probably be a hard sell in the future. Enjoy the adventure!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jen,
He’s actually sitting on the sleeper sofa in the office on top of a pillow. It’s so funny how he blends in- I didn’t even notice him there when I was filming!

I loved the house tour and your ideas are endless- so much space-
I also love that it is a ranch, I never thought I liked these homes, but if the rooms are on one side and the kitchen and other space is on the other it works out well-
Did you ever consider pocket doors off the formal dining room? That would be a great project for you both to tackle- they can be glass as well to let in light or frosted glass for privacy for a guest etc.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Noelle,
We did think about pocket doors for a bit, but I’ve always wanted big glass french doors somewhere, especially around those built-ins. Someday!

I have to wonder if the old owners are now big fans– not many people get to see what their house looks like after they sell it!

This was a perfect work break!! I actually had to watch twice b/c I was trying to spot Burger! Then I realized he and his sister take naps at the same time during the day!! (spotted him on the sofa in the office) too cute! and how nice for you and John!!
Lyndsey says
I thought you did a great job! My favorite part was seeing your cute baby napping–there’s nothing more peaceful to watch on earth.
Your house looks lovely. I can’t wait to see your completed family room with your new sectional and also what happens when you guys get your hands on your kitchen/eat-in area. So exciting! Are you feeling impatient to get the house “done” how you’d like? The hardest part for me would be having plans but having to wait to execute them all.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lyndsey,
We’re surprisingly “at peace” when it comes to all that we have to get done. We just keep trying to remind ourselves that our last house took 4.5 years to get where it was when we left, and this ones’ bigger and there’s more to do. So we better get excited about living “in progress” or we’ll be pretty miserable for the next few years!

Love.love.love.love (did I say that enough times) your house! It is looking great so far and I love seeing the “befores” since I know you guys will be making alot of changes throughout the year. I am really loving all your floors and the exposed brick. Also very curious what you’ll be doing with the alley–so neat!
Question: Where do you find all your sheepskin rugs? I have one but it is not as white or large as yours are and I can’t seem to find any in a different size.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jordan,
We get ours from Ikea. They’re actually faux sheepskin, which we love!

I LOVE that you can walk into Clara’s room while she is sleeping. My little one is such a light sleeper I can’t get with in 10ft of the room! Ha ha!
Can’t wait to see what you guys do with the house! I am SO jelous of that giant dinning room! It is my dream to host all our family for Thanksgiving dinners. I think the space will be perfect. =)
Roshni says
hahah!! I can understand that you gesticulate a lot when talking which was probably why the camera was shaky!! Thanks for the tour though! Even after you posted so many pics in your previous post, it was nice to see the video! The house looks nice as is, coz it looks so neat and clean…but I can’t wait for you to do something about the crazy flooring!!

My house has a master bath verrrrry similar to the one in your guest room. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of magic you can do in there!

LOVE IT! Isn’t it amazing what one extra bedroom offers?! My husband and I are thinking of “upgrading” to a 4-bedroom (old ranch) now that we have two kiddos (a 2-yr-old and 2 month-old) and three tiny 1955 bedrooms and mini-closets! Even if they do share a bedroom we’re out of space for office-guestroom-livingspace-etc, having only 1300 square feet for four of us and our love of having people over!
Hilary @ My So-Called Home says
This tour was worth the wait and it definitely cleared up a few layout questions for me. I love the potential that lay before you guys and can’t wait to see it all unfold!
Ericka says
Thanks for the tour! I can see why you chose that house – tons of potential and totally livable in the meantime! I have to say that I had to stop watching the video for a while since I got MAJOR motion sickness from it!:) Not your fault, just happens whenever I’m looking at something and there are a lot of twists and turns.
Cheryl Balmas says
Really enjoyed the tour and seeing the floor plan again. I like the additions on the house which gives you a big family room and master bedroom. They did a good job tying that into the rest of the house, even with the alley–there’s potential there for sure. I can totally see you paving that with some gorgeous stonework and setting out huge potted plants and a water feature of some sort. Love your ideas for the french doors to the office (love french doors and they go with that style of house so well), opening the wall to connect the kitchen and future dining room and having a two sided fireplace. Love it!
rachel says
Hey guys! Great tour… cant wait to see you two take sledgehammers to walls and transform this house! I’m definitely curious about your plans with the “Alleyway” a mini porch? another room? extend the master and make a ginormous walk in closet for Sherry?! (Personally, thats what i would do!)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Rachel,
We definitely aren’t sure what we’ll do, but we have lots of outdoor ideas for it (cutting garden, path with pergola, play area for kids, etc). We’ll post about whatever we decide when we get there. As we mentioned in this post, we’re just trying to take things one day at a time!

Cheryl Balmas says
Did I mention I love that your master bedroom is located in another area of the house. If we ever went back to a ranch someday (michigans economy just not condusive to selling our 2 story right now) I would love it if the master suite were on one side of the house and the other bedrooms on the other side of the house which is a common floorplan for florida and some other states but not so much in michigan. Also, the reason i suggested flagstone or some type of tile in the alley is for less maintenance, you could even extend the tile out a little beyond the alley a ways in a unique design. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
cheryl balmas says
Rachel…love that idea about extending the master and building a walk in closet. :)
Hanna says
That tour was soooo cute Sherry. :) I can’t wait to see all that you guys do and redo. Maybe when it is warmer a tour of the yard and porch as well? How-to landscaping is something that still scarifies and boggles me.
Again, thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Lisa in Seattle says
This was such a great video! I am terrible at figuring out where things are, so this really helped. Don’t laugh, but I printed out the floorplan and followed along while watching the video.
Your living room (which I keep thinking of as a “great room” is going to be such a great space for your family and friends. I love the different activity zones. I also love the cozy little nook in front of the kitchen fireplace, although it’s a bit head-scratch-y to me that a house in Virginia even needs a fireplace, because I think of you as being pretty much in “the tropics” (yes, even with snow on the ground!). I can’t wait to see what you end up doing with the little alley. For anybody else, it would be the place where old hibachis and tricycles go to die, but you are going to make something fantastic out of it.
Thanks for the tour!!!
Jen_nifer says
Thanks for the tour! It really solidifies the floor plan for me. And yes, I am one of those cross-referencing people. :)
