About a month ago we were walking around the park and Clara pointed to a dogwood tree and said “wow, that’s a big big tree in a big big world.” John and I cracked up. So now when I think of Clara’s playroom/big girl room, I also think of the big big tree and the big big world of ours. Hilarious. Anyway, back to the room that we have affectionately (and ironically) called the playroom. Remember that it looked like this when we moved in?
And then it got all cluttered up with junk and looked like this?
And then we organized it with the help of my mom and it looked like this?
And then in a Groundhog-Day-esque turn of events a year later it looked like this again (thanks to months of book insanity)?
So we cleaned it one last time and had a big yard sale and auctioned a bunch of book projects off for charity and finally we were left with this:
I may or may not have done a victory dance around the daybed that included some very painful-to-watch moonwalking. Gaining any actual use of this room will be ten times better than the junked up storage room that it has been for the past three Christmases (how are we on year three of living here without reclaiming this room sooner?!). So as we’ve mentioned a few times, it will serve as a nice little playroom for Clara and eventually will be her big girl room once she graduates from sleeping in her crib.
Why switch rooms? Well, the nursery is so small that adding a daybed basically sucks up all the floor space, so moving her into the larger spare room and keeping the nursery for a possible future kiddo makes the most sense for us). Of course we can always update the nursery for a boy bean if one should come our way someday (heck, kids rooms are our favorite things, so we’d jump at the chance). In fact here’s an old mood board we did a while back to show how Clara’s room could be adapted for a little dude:
Once all the extra stuff was cleared out and remaining items were pushed to the center of the room, it was time to paint (we had used the room as a secret-book-project backdrop so it was a hot mess). We’d repainted sections of the walls around ten times in there to create different colored backdrops for shooting – and had even painted the trim around one window a moody gray color and stenciled a good portion of another wall. Nothing was safe from the madness of book shots.
Here are a few other oddly-painted angles:
So yes, paint was definitely necessary. First I painted the book-project-window-shade from gray back to glossy white:
Before we pick a wall color we like to think about the other things that’ll be going on in the room. So we thought about that for a hot second or two. We actually wanted Clara to have some input, so we asked her what colors she wanted to see in her big girl room. Not surprisingly, she said “pink and red!” (her faves used to be pink and orange, but she moved to pink and red about a month ago).
It’ll be nice to have another room in the house with warmer touches in those red and pink tones (you know we love us some green & blue, so that’s prevalent in a lot of other areas). It was even cool with John since, in his words “as long as we’re not going hot pink all over the living room, I’m down with Clara getting to pick the colors that we use in her big girl room.” Mah man. He can build a deck and he’s cool with pink.
So just to give you an idea where we’re thinking of bringing in those pinks and reds (along with other hits of colors/textures that make a room feel layered and not-too-matchy-matchy) here’s a quick picture of some items we’ve been saving for Clara’s big girl room in a little floor-pile together. Floor-piles are the new mood board. Just kidding.
We don’t want the room to be red/pink overkill, so using tones like white and navy – along with hits of other colors like yellow and teal – to break things up is definitely on the agenda. And since we wanted the items in the photo above to stand out (instead of being the same color as the walls) we opted for a soft and pretty neutral that we know will be just as workable with any other accent colors down the line. Let’s face it, kids can change their favorite colors on a dime, so we don’t want our walls to be forever dependent on a red & pink scheme, ya know?
And this time instead of going with a gray-ish neutral (which we’ve done in a few other rooms) we dipped back into the warmer neutral palette and went for a super soft tan tone. Sort of like tea when you put in too much milk. Mmmm. It definitely still works within our whole house palette, but it’s a slightly warmer than some of the other grays.
We were between two extremely similar colors, so naturally, we picked the one with the better name. Totally reasonable tie-breaker move, right? The winner: Alaskan Skies by Benjamin Moore (we bought a gallon of their no-VOC Natura paint in an eggshell finish). The reason it won: we honeymooned in Alaska and took approximately 650,367 photos of the sky while we were there. The sweet little coincidence is that the paint in Clara’s nursery is Proposal (also by BM), so I guess we’re subconsciously drawn towards wedding/honeymoon related names.
Since I’m the cutter-inner and John’s the roller in this relationship (those sound like weird euphemisms) I was totally jealous about John’s big erase-the-past roller moves. Meanwhile I’m sitting on the floor painting above the baseboards. Look at me go! Just kidding. And now for a montage of John rolling over all of the randomly painted portions of the room (I wish it was a montage, it’s just this picture and the one above).
Not gonna lie, it felt pretty good to watch him go over all of those random colors and stencils on the walls and finally move towards a room that’s all one color again. Meanwhile I was inching my way around the room cutting in around the windows, doors and the ceiling. Speaking of which, we didn’t paint the ceiling (just left it white) but we’re debating adding some soft tone up there someday down the line after the room comes together more. Stay tuned…
I think we’re in love with the wall color though. Not too pink, gray, or tan. And not too white, so the window trim, molding (and future crown molding that we’d love to install) pop nicely against it. Just like extra milky tea against a clean white mug. Yum.
So we’re currently waiting for the paint to dry so we can move all of the furniture back into semi-normal spots.
Then we’ll share more photos along with planning/details/projects as we go! Back in 2010 Clara’s first nursery evolved over the course of about 20 posts and two or three months. Can’t wait to watch this bare little room take shape…
So that’s what we’ve been up to. What did you guys do this weekend?

We used Alaskan Skies in our living room and dining room! I love how the color changes in the different light through the day and night. IMO it’s the perfect neutral!!

Yes, I never thought I’d be so into a neutral but it’s awesome!

Woohoo pink and red! Love that it’s against a neutral backdrop. And I’m totes jealous of Clara’s moose lamp!
My weekend was busy running after my new pit bull puppy. She’s a lot of work and makes me realize I’m NOT ready for kids. Haha! But she sure is cute: http://instagram.com/p/UpqcCqEXDb/.

Such a cutie!!! If it helps I thought having Burger as a puppy rivaled having Clara as a baby. Puppies are hard!

As we speak, I’m also going through the painful process of sorting, clearing, emptying, painting, bringing everything back in our home office room (a.k.a junk room) so I have very vivid in my mind the feeling of despair first and excitement for getting it ready later that you might be experiencing. Can’t wait to see the end result!
Gabriella @ Our Life In Action says
Exciting. I am so interested on how she takes to her big girl room. My little man will play in his but then at night avoids it like the plague. Scared of the “monsters”. I am trying everything but so far it is a no go.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh I heard a cool tip which is to fill a spray bottle with water and call it monster spray. Just spray down the room at night and tell him it’s all clear. Maybe that will work?

Gabriella @ Our Life In Action says
AWESOME!!! Definately going to try that tonight. Thank’s for the tip. Breaks my heart to see him scared at night so I cave and let him climb in bed with us which doesn’t help matters of course. :-)
Thank you again – I’ll let you know how it works tomorrow.

Good luck Gabriella!

Just be careful- a friend of mine tried that and all it did was convince her daughter even more that the monsters were real. I guess it’s all about knowing your kid :)

This weekend marked the end of our live (and super dry) Christmas tree. It had already been emptied of all things Christmas but we lacked the time and ability to get it to our city dump. Then my dad took it home with him to be put on his burn pile and we’ll light it up when it gets warmer (it’s below freezing here). Gotta love bonfires! Along with the tree, we’re starting the same process as you (but have a much longer way to go) of taking our super messy room and turning it into my daughter’s big girl room. But not only do we have a ton of things to empty out, we then have an entire remodel ahead of us – ripping everything out, new windows, insulation, drywall, paint, everything but the hardwood floors. We’ll reuse the trim too, but it’ll be painted bright white not baby pink (yes, the room is currently a glittery chocolate brown, wallpaper, and pink trim and doors… NOT done by us!). You can see it here.. http://thebrickbungalow.blogspot.com/2013/01/2013.html I wish we were almost done like you guys!!! Can’t wait to see the finished room.. it’ll be insipration for us!
YoungHouseLove says
You can do it Megan! Good luck!

Aren’t you sad to abandon Clara’s cool closet?
I have to confess, the idea of turning the nursery over to a new baby because the room is small for a twin bed confuses me. Won’t you eventually put a bed in there when the baby isn’t a baby anymore anyway?
YoungHouseLove says
About Clara’s closet, yes! Although the one in the playroom is similar (built ins, larger than average, etc) so I’m hoping she can reclaim that little nook in her big girl room too. As for the nursery eventually evolving, we’ve thought that perhaps a lofted bed waaaay later (for a larger kid) would free up more floor space someday. It’s just a very modestly sized room, so plopping even a twin bed down in there pretty much clogs up the whole room, so we’ll have to get creative :)
xo
s
Wendy says
Love the idea of a loft bed in the will-be-old-one-day nursery.
We currently live in a small 2 BR home, and the kids room has a loft bed (for the teen boy) and crib (for the wee girl). Under the loft bed is a dresser for the boy and a glider for the adults plus wee girl.
The room also doubles as a fitness room with free weights, mats, etc. stashed in the closet.
It’s crazy how much diversity a small room can hold with the foundation of love, family, and creativity!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, that’s so sweet Wendy!

Love the color, I can’t wait to see the big reveal!!
I spent the weekend painting my basement family room, I went with BM moonshine and I love it!!!
Strange question, how do you get the paint out of your hair, do you have any tips?? haha
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah, I just scrub it in the shower and it seems to mostly come out (usually by the second wash if not by the first). Also wearing a ponytail helps keep hair back so it’s less painted!

Love the direction you guys are going in for her new room. The colors are really fun. Definitely seems like it will allow you to update and add other colors as she changes her mind later on. And hey, I think a pile on the floor works just as well as a mood board.

So great to see project come together. Iknow the room will be beautiful! Clara is such a doll and says the cutest things. And she will make an awesome big sister when the time comes!
Megan @ Rappsody in Rooms says
Ooo nice color pick. I have a color like that in a few rooms in our house and it really is a great backdrop. I am all about the pops of color in a room, so leaving the walls neutral definitely helps it not be explosively in your face. Can’t wait to see the rest of it come together!
KENDRA says
What will you do with the ceiling fan in that room? Do you like it enough that you will keep it? update to a different light fixture? We have an old one in our room – we will probably do a cute light fixture of some sort :)

Edgecomb Gray BM (color matched to a different paint) is the color of our kitchen and it’s really nice. It’s a little creamy though (is that a weird way of explaining paint?). It works though. My favorite is like a step down from that and it’s called Revere Pewter. It’s so pretty and a great neutral.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh yeah Revere Pewter is so pretty too!

It’s amazing and works really well in different light too. It’s *hopefully* going to be a mainstain in our house when we repaint and may end up our bedroom color. I’m a little unsure what to do about colors though downstairs since it’s open and the biggest focal point will be the cherry cabinets. Everyone puts yellow with cherry but since it’s so open I want most of our downstairs to be primarily the same color. I’m almost ready to just stick with a nice white and then use arts/accessories for the bursts of color.
Cait says
This weekend has consisted of watching my Ravens make it to the Superbowl (ahhh!!) and finally (I think) committing to a new paint color for our master bedroom. I’ve been staring at the samples for about two weeks now, I think it’s time to make some moves. We already painted this room once about 4 months ago, so let’s hope this new color is the winner!!

We are in the process of transitioning our just turned 10 years old daughter into her “tween” room. She wanted to move into a spare bedroom that is in the back of our house, vs. her current room which is in the front. Her current room is bright pink, like the Barbie Dream House threw up in it pink. After weeks of picking out every bright, vivid paint swatch at Home Depot, she finally decided neutral was the way to go in the new room. She picked “Gentle Fawn” (kind of a caramel color from Glidden). She got a new white bed and wardrobe from Ikea and in a surprising twist, picked blue and white toile bedding from Ikea with some other patterns mixed in for texture (her words!). She picked out a crystal chandelier, too. I love the room so much I may move into it as well. Still need to paint her closet doors and replace the hardware but almost done! This has been one of my very favorite projects ever in our house.

We are working on our Kenley’s big girl room and I was so excited when I read the beginning of this post when you mentioned the “big big tree” because we are planning on painting a tree in one of the corners of her room and hanging birdhouses on the “branches.” And I thought maybe you guys were thinking something “tree-related” too. Maybe you are? :)
YoungHouseLove says
That’s cute! We don’t have any trees planned, but there are some large objects that are somewhat bird related that I’ve been collecting (not birdhouses though) so those are going to be worked in down the line! How’s that for mysterious. Haha.

Can’t wait to see the finished product! We are starting to brainstorm for our daughter and we are thinking a pinky gray with pink and light teal accents….we will see!

New paint always makes a room feel so fresh!
I’m kind of a little sad that you no longer are going to have a “junk” room, since I just started piling stuff in our spare bedroom while we finish up our living room and get started on our bedroom. I really wanted to work on turning the spare room into my sewing room as my next project, but got outvoted by my hubby. Our bedroom has been THE junk room since we moved in here 15 years ago, so I guess it really IS time to clear it out and turn it into more of a sanctuary than a storeroom!
This weekend I cut and stained the wood to make a desk for my 27 year old son who just got a huge new computer with two large monitors for Christmas that won’t fit on his little bitty computer desk. This new desk is 8 ft long with bookcases at each end, somewhat along the lines of the desk in your home office. Today I’m putting the bookcases together before hauling the pieces over to his apartment.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, well if it makes you feel better I’m slightly jealous of anyone who still has a junk room. Haha! It’s nice to toss things in and close the door :)

After living in my house for almost three years, I am finally figuring out the way it works for me the best. So… this weekend I moved the dining room into the living room, the tv into what was an underused office so it can become a den, and I’m turning the dining room into awhat I’m calling a project room. (Mostly because I think I am too cool for a craft room. Ha. ) So today it’s off to IKEA for some shelving, maybe a couch, a tv stand. Wish me luck!

So wait. You’re NOT pregnant? ;o) This room is going to come out so pretty I can tell with your floor pile mood board. I grew up with 4 macho brothers that were all like “Pink? Nah…farts! Side note: saw a little 3rd grader with a hot pink t-shirt walking to the school pick up line and it said “DONT LAUGH, IT’S YOUR GIRLFRIENDS SHIRT”. Hmmmm…..future homewrecker?

Do you guys ever prime the walls first or is the BM paint good enough that you only have to use 1 coat. We get so tired of putting 2-3 coats on the walls (using either primer and behr paint or 2 coats behr paint). Painting advice, please.
YoungHouseLove says
We only prime walls if we’re going from a super dark color to a super light one or vice versa, so we primed before painting the guest room dark teal, but didn’t prime in here since most of the room was going from light to light (a few patches were a little darker but nothing too bad).

I have a question, can you ever put too many coats of paint on a wall or object? With all the layers of paint in this room are you worried it will get too clumpy or chip?
I’ve put three coats on our stairs’ kick plates and I think it actually needs another coat, but I’m afraid of adding too many.
Thanks for the help!

Thankfully as long as you keep your paint nice and smooth (and always wait for it to fully dry before repainting!) we haven’t had issues going over it. The parts that were painted tons of times look just as nice as others that were just painted once by us.

Hi! Lovely wall color…and a great description…milk tea against a white mug :)! For the ceiling…think about cutting the wall color in half…it will be a contrast with the wals andsoften the ceiling-white color. I often do that with ceilings for my projects. I like to take the trim (usually Ben Moore 912 Linen White) and cut the color in half for the ceiling color. Looks like a great start to a beautiful space! Cheers. Meredith

After seeing this I found myself going back and watching a few older “Baby Clara” videos this morning, “Clara’s Magic Ball”, anyone? Bueller?? Anywho, it left me with #1) a question for you, and #2) a decision I thought it only fair you guys know. 1. Do you guys ever get like even a half hour to go back and watch some of those oldie-but-goodie videos? It’s hard to stop! 2. If the Hubster and I are ever fortunate enough to be blessed with a little one, and that little one happens to be of female persuasion, her name will officially be Clara. In hopes that she would turn out even half as cute as “the original” Clara. (And yes, I’m telling you guys this before even discussing with him.) Oh! And I really like the paint color, perfect neutral back-drop for all things girly!

Haha, that’s so sweet! Re: the photo of the 3/4 painted wall, with the daybed in the bottom-right of the photo. Is that more than 1 color on the wall–or just the lighting & angle?? It looks ombre, with gray at top and light blue at the very bottom. It looks fantastic and now I’m a-feared that I will be obsessed with gradual, blended-in ombre wall paint (as opposed to well-defined stripes of darkening shades, like the most recent Reader Redesign/Kitchen nook [which I also loved]). Love the color you chose! We actually did the same thing this weekend. We had some construction done 3 years ago, and had our entire house painted at the time…we chose a bright pink color for my girls’ rooms. I’ve hated it since the moment it went up on the walls. Too pepto-bismol! It looked worse in the smaller of the 2 rooms. We finally repainted this weekend (stolen moments by BM), light neutral green and she wanted a light sky blue for the ceiling. It looks a million times better. I keep telling my daughter (whose favorite color is pink) that all her pink things will stand out more against the pale green walls. At the last minute I wanted to go for an off-white, but I couldn’t get her on board. Had this post come out last week, we might have been painting the walls Alaskan Skies :)
