Our house gets really nice sunlight – especially upstairs and especially in the afternoon when the sun hits the front of the house directly. We love it for everything from hanging out to taking photos. And Burger, well, he loves it for just about anything: napping, grooming, sniffing things, more napping.
But the beams of sunlight streaming in also highlighted a shortcoming of this house: no window blinds. I think we took it for granted that the bedrooms in our last house came with nice white faux wood blinds, so it was kind of a shock the first night when we realized we had nothing for privacy or to keep the light from creeping in early the next morning.
So after way too many nights of undressing in the dark and waking up at the crack of dawn, we finally went out and bought a stack of these puppies. They’re Home Depot’s in-stock faux wood blinds. We splurged slightly on the “premium” version because they had wider slats (which means less window obstruction when they’re open) and they also promised better light blocking and had a break-away cord for added kid safety (no loops, just pulls, and the pulls break away under the weight of a child). Fortunately it was only a small upcharge, since dressing 11 windows quickly added up to over $350 (and that was with a coupon). Gulp.
But they were a necessary evil that each room needed (especially the bedrooms and bathrooms where a certain amount of privacy is not just appreciated, it’s expected). I say “evil” because we don’t consider them to be exceptionally pretty – even if they are an upgrade from vinyl blinds – but the function trumps any gripes that we have about form. And once you layer in some curtains the windows end up looking pretty great.
Installation was a bit tedious, but straightforward thanks to some good instructions. Having to hang eleven blinds and then make a few adjustments turned into a bit of a time suck (this project took about 6 hours total, broken up over two days) but it’s beyond nice to have privacy and early-morning-darkness in the bedrooms and bathrooms again.
Hanging them basically involved screwing two brackets into the side of the window frame, and then sliding the blind into place.
We were lucky that our windows were all standard sizes, so Home Depot had them on the shelf (they offer free cutting services if needed – but we were glad we didn’t have to stand there while they cut down 11 blinds for us). I did get to customize them for our house by adjusting the length, which I did after each one was hung. I just removed the bottom slat, cut the strings that held all of the extraneous slats that we wanted to remove, and then reattached the base slat to the shortened strings and tied that to hold it in place (this post shows that step in more detail if you’d like extra photos/info).
One new issue that we never encountered when installing these before was that the side pieces of trim that came with each set of blinds needed to be shorter to fit against our window frames for some reason.
So I broke out my miter saw to give each of them (all 22!) a trim so they’d sit flush against the window and still attach correctly at the corner. The pieces of scrap wood in this picture are just blocking that I used to keep the trim in place without risking my fingers.
Much better.
They just snap together, so shortening them on the end didn’t interfere with how they attach.
Then all that was left was to enjoy some privacy and some light control. They’re still looking pretty basic because we don’t have curtains hung in most of our rooms yet.
Although we do have them in Clara’s room…
We also hung the curtains that Sherry sewed for our last dining room in the guest room.
We owe you guys photos of how each room is looking these days, so Sherry’s planning to shoot some pictures for you this weekend and write a “one month in” post for Monday. And speaking of the lady wife, we were just talking about how the first few months in a house always feel like you’re bleeding money. Seriously, someone get us a tourniquet. So although this is our third house and we should know how this goes by now (addressing all those do-this-first items just seem to add up) we still find ourselves walking out of Home Depot saying things like “Over $300?! Are these blinds made of gold?!”
P.S. Since Google Reader is breaking up with all of us in four short days (aka: closing down forever) we’ve been forced to find a new reader, so we’ve converted over to Feedly (it imported all of our favorite blogs really easily and we liked its clean layout) but we’ve also heard good things about Bloglovin. So this is just a little “remember the milk” reminder, except it’s “remember to switch readers because Google’s about to dump us all.”

I feel the pain!! :) I live in Alaska and as we all know summer time= bright all the time! In my 2 year old sons room I have black out shades, black out curtains, and regular heavy weight curtains. Yup. That is the ONLY way nap time and normal bed time are going to happen. Other wise he looks at me like, “Pffffffff! Ya right mom!” We have a similar set up in the other bedrooms, but his is of the utmost importance!

I just moved my bedroom to the refinished attic space in my house and currently have no blinds! I have been waking up at the crack of dawn for the past few weeks and it is super annoying. Also I am changing in my closet, haha.
I just posted a project on my blog involving curtains (http://rentalrevival.com/home/2013/6/26/diy-tribal-curtain) and MAN, I am having so much trouble with my new fancy camera and shooting windows. What the heck am I doing wrong?? Everything turns out super dark with a giant bright window in the middle of it. I know it has something to do with exposure but I have no clue how to fix it. Any tips? Your window pictures look beautiful!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, it’s really hard! It took us years to figure out our camera this much, and we still have a ton to learn! We like to shoot in A mode and adjust the exposure until it hopefully looks ok, and the pros actually shoot the room so it’s bright and then adjust the exposure and shoot the things out the window from the exact same spot so they’re clear (the room will be dark in this shot) and then combine them in photoshop!

Megan Poletti says
Good to know. I suppose am going to have to sift through my owner’s manual, because I don’t know how to adjust the exposure. It is a little overwhelming, especially when I’m in Auto mode and the pictures still look underexposed!

You can do it Megan! It takes time, but you’ll look back and see how much you’ve improved over the months/years that you use it!

I bought these exact blinds 3 years ago when I bought my first home! They are holding up great! I have extra large dogs (70 lb Standard Poodles)so I’m missing a few of the hanging do-dads that clip onto the adjustment strings because the dogs thought they were new chew toys, but other than that they still look great! I have them in every room and they are a chore to clean, but I do don’t do it regularly so its not too bad. I kept thinking I would put curtains up around them, but I haven’t. I like the simplicity of the bare windows and I’m nervous about dogs and dirty curtains. :)

UGH! We know what you mean about bleeding money. My husband and I are still renting, but we can never stand the condition some landlords leave their properties in (because, what do they care, they don’t have to live there!)
We are moving into another apartment this weekend and we’ve been there every night since we got the keys last week. Recaulking the bathroom and kitchen, painting the kitchen, installing quarter round in the living room to cover up the fact that the laminate floors don’t meet the baseboards. We’re doing pretty much every small project we can that costs just a few bucks but makes a big difference. It will all be worth it when we are living in a nice comfortable place that doesn’t have eyesores everywhere!

We’re a couple years into our house now, but I’d been making a list of some light bulbs we needed. Dimmable ones for overhead fixtures, 3-way for some lamps, covered CFLs for the exposed ones in the vanity fixture, and the long ones for some overhead fixtures in the basement and garage. Once I was done, I told my husband we needed to go spend hundreds of dollars on light bulbs. He thought I was joking. I was not. We didn’t even get extras for anything that wasn’t out. Amazing how much some of the little things cost.

I love your safavieh dhurrie rug in olive and ivory. I have been admiring it since you replaced the horrific solid green shag rug. I have been wanting to order it but have been skeptical as in your house it is beautiful and light green but the website shows it as a dark olive green. Would you mind clarifying which color is more accurate? Amazon currently has it for sale in this color and I would love to get it before it is gone, if it is a lighter green. thanks a million. love the new house.

So much $$$$ bleeding! I’m on my first home, so though I was warned; I laughed and said: ‘The place is in decent shape, and I’m doing it all myself, so it can’t be too expensive.’
Wrong was I. But now I’m on a first name basis with the evening paint gal at my local Home Depot, can (re,re,re) wire a fixture, and even have a stove that doesn’t fill my house with a faint gas smell anymore.
My tourniquet is trying to remind myself to not have too many projects going at once, look for free or cheap alternatives, and when in doubt; borrow Dad’s tools and expertise.

I found this post so ironic as I’m struggling to find the right blinds for our little beach cottage. Since I love the look of the dark bamboo so much, I was leaning more towards getting the dark faux wood blind (like an espresso color). Did you look at those at all, or were you pretty set on the white?

I think I’ll do those downstairs and white faux wood up here since they’re easier to open & close and fully block light.

just a thought–I think the dark wood blinds would show dust a lot more than the white.
Sharra says
Sorry, I wasn’t clear! I meant, since we know that you like the look of the dark bamboo, did you consider getting the faux wood blinds IN the darker color instead of white? I hope that makes sense.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh gotcha! I think we have always liked the white color better. Since we like bamboo blinds up just for texture at the top of a window they still feel light, but we worried dark wood blinds would feel heavy when open since they cover the whole window and even darker/heavier when closed. But it’s totally a personal preference thing!

Every day reader here, not a frequent comment-leaver! Can i just say how happy i am to see this?! perhaps b/c i have the exact same blinds in almost every window in my house. privacy is an issue, as my neighbors can see right into my house at night. I would look at your bamboo blinds in your 2nd home and be crazy jealous- but i really needed something functional. I landed on crisp white, faux wood blinds from the home depot. I even contemplated removing them in the bathroom and frosting the window like you did in your last house to let more light. In my kitchen, i do not have any fabric, instead i opted to frame the windows (they are your typical 1978 builder grade, no framing) and go strictly with the blinds. its very crisp and clean. i am so glad to see my head is where the almighty Petersik’s heads are at! #winning

So we had to replace all the disgusting/sticky mini blinds when we moved into our house. Since we moved in right before we got married, we didn’t have a ton of money to do house upgrades. So I bought sets of blinds for rooms as we had the cash since the mini blinds, though gross, “worked” for the time being. I had a TON of luck on overstock.com for blinds. Between there and Home Depot, we were able to get all honeycomb/energy efficient blinds for the three bedrooms, and faux wood blinds for the rest of the house for around $250. The faux wood blinds can vary from place to place (we had one set that had faint wood grain stamped into it), but as long as the dimensions are the same (ie. all 2″) then it’s not noticeable. I’m glad we replaced them as we could because we definitely couldn’t have afforded to buy the kind we wanted all at once!

Funny–in the three + years we’ve lived in our house I’ve been slowly taking DOWN the chunky white faux wood blinds that the previous owners put on every single window in the house. I don’t think they look bad; I just prefer to only have curtains. But as I take them down I think about how much $$ the previous owners probably spent on all of those blinds! Wish I could send them to you. :) (Although at this point I’m stashing them in the basement in case we ever move and I want to put the blinds up before listing the house so I can take the curtains with me….if at that point I can figure out which blinds went on which windows!)
I like the custom-looking mouldings at the top of your blinds. Ours have some but they don’t look as nice, have clear plastic corners, and break easily…

We bought very similar looking blinds from Lowes (for some reason they were way cheaper at Lowes than Home Depot), and although I love the way they look, they were a total pain to install. It took us three evenings to put up three blinds! Mostly because we don’t have standard size windows, and the size that was recommended to us ended up being too narrow, so we ended up having to rig some support structure to hang them up (which we plan to cover up with curtains). And our old house came with such beautiful trim around the windows, that the trim that came with the blinds looked so bad in comparison, we didn’t even bother installing it.
Anyway, I love how the blinds look in your windows! And as for the privacy thing, I hear ya. The first two weeks in our new house, we basically stuck old curtains and sheets into the window frame just so we could get some privacy (keeping it classy!).
Becky says
Love the blinds! Makes me slightly sad, as we have bought all pull down cordless cellular shades for our house. However, our cat eats blind strings (it’s like crack. He’s been to our in-laws and eaten all of theirs in like two days) so I basically had no choices as far as shades went. For those with a similar problem, I have found JC Penney to have some basic pull down shades for every room at very reasonable prices (of course more than typical vinyl blinds, but if you have to have no cords…) with black out options for bedrooms as well. We had Budget Blinds quote our house at I think $3000 (! What is budget about that?!) and I will be getting all from JC Penney for about a grand. (CHOKE. darn cat) Although, the cat can knock these shades up with his head to peak out so that saves me some trouble. :)It’s been a year, perhaps I’ll add curtains this year….

I am writing regarding child-safety concerns with these blinds. While break-apart cord joiners or break-apart tassels do provide one small aspect of child safety, there are still numerous accessible cord hazards for children on these blinds. There have been well over 500 window cord child strangulation incidents in the US and many of them would not have been prevented by these break apart tassels/cord joiners. Children can still wrap single cords around their necks, pull out loops from the cords that hold the slats together, and strangle in loops that form when the cords tangle or knot together. There is also a recognized hazard pattern of older toddlers climbing on toys or furniture to access cords that parents believe are out of reach. Additionally, there appears to be numerous accessible cords on the particular blinds you have selected – in addition to the standard pull cords to lift the blind, the traditional plastic tilt wand has been replaced with 2 cords to tilt the slats open and shut, plus rather than one support cord running through the slats to hold them together there is one cord running along the outside front of the slats and yet another running along the outside back. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified window coverings with cords as one of the top five hidden hazards in the home and recommends the use of cordless window coverings in all homes where children live or visit. About once a month a child between 7 months and 10 years old dies from window cord strangulation and another child suffers a near strangulation. Here are links to several CPSC information pages on the issue: http://www.cpsc.gov/PageFiles/116322/windowcover.pdf and

We just measured from one inset side of the trim to the other and used that exact measurement to buy blinds (blinds that say 25″ are meant for 25″ gaps, so they’re a bit shy of 25″, which means they’ll fit perfectly). Hope it helps!

we just put up these blinds and found putting the bottom rail back on after shortening them was close to impossible. Any secrets? For now we’re planning on leaving the rest as they are since it went so badly.
YoungHouseLove says
I agree that it was definitely not the most smooth process. I made my life sightly easier by basically attaching it right under the last slat – rather than trying to leave a precisely measured & level gap between the last slat and the bottom rail. That was a big help. I also skipped their suggestion to twist the excess string and just cut it a bit shorter so I had less to wad up in there, which made getting the plug back on easier. It was still a bit tricky though, so I feel ya.

We bought a dozen of those same blinds from Home Depot about 9 years ago. The covers that fit around the top are a bit different then yours, but 9 years later they still look exactly the same – still white (no yellowing), they’ve survived cats trying to climb through the slats, and work great.

$300 for 11 windows is awesome. We were too scared to do the installation ourselves (do you have a post somewhere on this?) when we moved into our house three years ago, so we opted to have Home Depot do it for us. I want to say it was $80/window and we have 11 windows in our ranch. To this day, we still haven’t been able to afford anything else on our windows, but we love that they block out light (we went with dark wood in our bedroom for maximum light blockage) and cool down the house.

Can I just say *thank you!* for hanging curtains in your still unpainted rooms! We’ve lived in our new/old house since last fall, and I’ve made very little progress, because when I look at a room I think “I can’t hang curtains or art until I paint/patch the walls/re-do these awful baseboards/replace this door…” I finally took your lead and started really moving in, and it is so much more pleasant.
