As our fifth blogiversary week comes to a close, we must first dole out a giant thank you to everyone for the sweetness (oh the humanity) and the laughs (oh the hilarity) and – well – for taking our little annual poll that we dropped into Monday’s post. This year we had over 30,000 entries. Wowza. Thank goodness Google helped me crunch the numbers (a stark contrast to our first blogiversary poll where I copied and pasted all 199 comment responses into a spreadsheet by hand).
Obviously it wasn’t a scientific study, but we did come out with some fun facts and figures that we thought would be fun to share here courtesy of some fun little graphics we whipped up. I’m hoping if I say “fun” enough you guys will forget this is a post about statistics. Did it work? If not, and you refuse to scroll further, I’ll summarize it for you: most of you are pretty much like us (well, Sherry to be exact): married Americans who own a house and a dog. Although for the first time we’re older than a majority of our readers. So maybe we should throw some quotation marks around the “young” in our name (or check up on the availability of “Thirty-Something House Love”). Anyways, here goes nothing…
We had so much fun reading all of the stats on you guys. Did anything surprise you? Is there anything you’d love to know next year? Oh yeah, and speaking of yesterday’s goal post, this post is under 375 words (not counting the text in the graphics). Small yet satisfying. Like popping a dense little truffle over a heavy ol’ hunk of pound cake. Take that resolution!
Image sources: Beyonce, Ultrasound, Black Eyed Peas, Tina Fey, J.K. Rowling, Martha Stewart and Candice Olson.
Update – Some of the most frequent requests that we get are for info about professionally blogging (how we made our site, how we grew our following, how we make money, etc) so we shared all of the details about how we started a blog, grew our traffic, and turned it into a full time job.

My husband reads your site, and I know that he didn’t take the poll, so I’d say it’s probably closer to at least 3% guys. Woohoo!

When you get older, just buy a brand new house. Then you won’t have to change the name!
I always TELL my husband about the things you do. He listens without zoning out. Does that count?
YoungHouseLove says
Hahahah- totally counts. And that’s hilarious about buying a new house. Never thought about it, but it would totally make sense of the name.

Katy @ The Non-Consumer Advocate says
Interesting how us 40-somethings are only 6%, yet the majority of those who choose a celebrity pick Tina Fey.
Still though, I’d still rather be myself. I am rather awesome. ;-)

I am the 40 year old category. Sigh. I would like to think I am cool and hip and that is why I read this. But truth be told, it is because I love little kids, dogs, home depot, Mrs. Meyers, Tom’s, and diy projects. Common threads no matter what the age:)
Jules says
I can’t believe only 4% of your readers are from Europe! I know lots of people over here that read the blog!
And good stuff on the word count, i do like a good long post but you guys work so hard on the blog and post so often for us that I think anything you can do to get posts out more easily (so as to have more time to spend playing with Clara and having fun!) can only be a good thing!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Jules!

I turned 30 this year and am the oldest person on my rec league softball team. I commented on this (we used to have a guy older than me and he left the team), so I said, “Now that Tim left, I’m the oldest person on the team.” “How old are you?” “30” “Wow, that’s a whole other decade!” Oof.(For the record, the rest of the team is mid/upper twenties, so I’m within my peer group!)

Such a fun week guys! Loved every post!
P.s. If you tallied the number of cats people have v. dogs instead of whether or not they have dogs, I bet there would be a lot more cats than dogs! ;)

LOL! True. One or two crazy cat ladies could single-handedly turn the tide on the dig owners. :)

I first stumbled upon your blog while wedding planning last year, and restumbled upon it via a nursury blog that mentioned Clara’s play kitchen. I’m 5 months preggo now, and this site has become my full-on obsession! The hubs laughs at me when I tell him I’m going to start up a blog to document the remodel of our 1980 ranch style home. He said–who’d even read that. My response, Maybe no one, but won’t it be cool to document our remodel room by room?! I’m so inspired by you guys and I can not wait to start on our home! First stop–Baby Aidan’s room, which will be bright and friendly, just like Clara’s ;)
Heather says
Do it, Amari! It’s not about anyone else. Write for you and so you can remember it all! I started my blog as a way to document my life before kids, our house, etc. It is still way way way small as in hole in the wall but my Grandma reads every post and then emails me after to comment on my “latest cup-a”. It makes me SO happy and totally worth it. I have maybe 2-3 regular commenters, and one is from Spain. I adore it.

I love all the statistics! I’m a math nerd too though…
Also, I’ll only be in my 20s for like another month, but I totally went with it on the survey. I bet a lot of others are on the edge with me. :)

Proud member of the 2% club. I have always enjoyed reading your blog since I found a link on Apartment Therapy back in the day ( 2 or 3 years ago??).

It surprises me that there’s so few teens that read your blog! 11 days until I’m 20 and therefore have to move up an age category every blogiversary… Also LOVE all the graphical representations of eveyrone’s answers – so bold and pretty! :)

My husband was once a die hard commenter but has since become a murker… he left his corporate job where had more time to comment (or rather, comment on someone else’s time haha). I miss scrolling through the pages of comments to see what ridiculousness he was saying that day and hearing him say that he and Sherry were BFFs…
Kelley C says
This was really interesting and I too loved the graphics! I was thinking that maybe some fun facts for next year might be the percentage of people who have imitated one of the projects yall have done on the blog, how long they have been following, and how they heard about it. Just thoughts.

Cool idea! Noted.

I just wanna say how amazed I am everyday at you two. I am a graphic designer and know how much work it can be to edit photos / Come up with creative content / design work. So I can’t even imagine all of the work it is for you to do that along with writing / editing / commenting / doing projects / raising a daughter etc. You are truly an inspiration to us all! The work and dedication you put into this blog is amazing. Congrats on your 5 years!
Oh and woohoo for us 6% Canadians!!!!

Yeey! Representing the 1% of Latin America, I feel kinda of a kind…although I know there are another 300 people who read it…wonder if I can make more people to read it over the next year haha..
I also represent the 5% that live with their family…maybe that is why I haven’t tackle none of your ideas but I’m keeping it all (along with the book once is out) so when I do…I will be armed to tackle all sorts of DIY projects! :D
Love the graphics, you really are talented John! And most men are just machos and don’t answer surveys haha, I’m glad I made it into the poll this year
Felicidades amigos! :)

Well, I’m in the 3% not too far from the 1%. I think it just goes to show if you are into DIY – age has has no limits. Although, when I recently woke up with drywall grit in my teeth I wondered, oh Lord look where all this DIY has gotten me. Your stats speak to the universal appeal of your blog. You both has a strong sense of style that is current but not too trendy. You work to keep the jobs manageable and affordable like most DIYers. And, you write well and with a great sense of humor. Whenever I share something from a post with my husband or daughter, I always say ” my friends John and Sherry…” – because I so frequently talk about one of your projects. I also appreciate how respectful and considerate you are of your readers. We’re planning to sell our house next year and move again – I can’t believe we’ll be starting all over, so I’ll be checking in for a while to come. Congratulations on 5 years of blogging – well done and thank you!

Congrats on the 5 years and here’s to many many more!
Cheers!

I am kinda interested in people’s level of education to see if people in my circles might be reading these blogs. Or maybe a question on what area reader’s careers are in.
