…we did our best to not be completely and utterly awkward beyond belief. Did we succeed? You be the judge. Just like in past blogiversary weeks, we invited you guys to ask us some personal (i.e. non-decorating) questions over on our Facebook page last week. And after over two hundred questions came rolling in, Sherry and I sat down and answered as many as we could while Clara napped one afternoon – and then culled it down into this 20 minute video. Among all of our shocking and jaw-dropping revelations (note the sarcasm) you’ll learn:
- If there’s a bun in Sherry’s oven
- What kind of money we’re earning for our book
- How working together has affected our marriage
- How many readers have knocked on our door asking for a tour
- If we fear stalkers
- If Clara will be home-schooled
- How many bras Sherry owns
- When we’re moving again
- If we’ll ever get started on the playroom
- If Sherry’s dad is invisible
- What we’d change about our old house’s style
- Why we try not to pick our noses in public
- What we hate most about our job
- What we each find romantic about each other
- How Sherry plans to bribe me into seeing the new Twilight movie
- Who we’d want to play us in a hypothetical YHL movie
- Sherry’s thoughts on Ramona from the Real Housewives of New York City
- What part of DIYing we like the least
- If Sherry feels competitive with Katie Bower
- How long it takes for a project to get posted about
- How Clara acts like a toddler
So now that your appetite is sufficiently whetted, here goes nothing…
A few notes:
- Sherry’s insanely embarrassed that she leans in towards the camera the whole time. We didn’t realize this was happening until we were done with the whole video and watched it back, so there you have it: my fidgety wife.
- You might notice the lighting/focus changes towards the end of the video. The camera actually fell asleep and shut off, so we had to tape the end part in a second take. Yup, we actually chatted long enough to bore the camera to sleep. High five.
- Clara (and Burger apparently) were napping, hence their non-appearances, but we decided to do a little bonus Q&A video featuring the real stars of this show – Clara and Burger. Since this is the first blogiversary where Clara can actually string words together into something semi coherent, we thought it’d be fun to let her take a turn in the hot seat. And by hot seat, we mean handling questions like “what’s your favorite number?” – oh yeah, we’re grilling her.
So there you have it folks have it – nearly 25 minutes of us blathering on about all things personal and not much home stuff (which feels weird and fun at the same time). Did you learn anything that surprised you? Or hear something that sparked another question in your brain? We can’t promise we can get to every answer in the comments of this post, but feel free to ask away as potential fodder for next year’s video…
Psst- Speaking of other years, here are the Q&A posts for 2011, 2010 and 2009 (and 2009: part 2).
Emma says
So sweet, all of you!
Meghann says
Did John mention that Sherry doesn’t drive or did I just hear that? Is it because she grew up in the big city and there was no need?
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, didn’t drive in NYC for 6 years and then moved to Richmond, where we had one car and I worked from home (so John took it to work every day). Just got to be a 12 year habit! Haha.

Love Love Love Clara and Burger!! The video was so cute! Made me smile for the day :)
Mindy says
Since tampons were mentioned in your video, I figured this comment is fair game. Sherry, have you ever heard of the Diva cup? I am a fellow cloth diaper mommy and recently came across this and it’s pretty much changed my life. If you havent, I’d encourage you to look into it. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, a few folks have recommended it to me, but I’m still a little shy about it. Maybe one day I’ll get over that and give it a try. Haha!

Amber says
OH balderdash! I just thought of a few good questions so I set a reminder in my calendar for 9/15/2013. This is not normal behavior…

So great you guys! Thanks for sharing :)

Oh my goodness I was CRACKING up at the Red Robin thing. After reading through some of the comments about the book signing I got so excited and kept trying to channel “dallasdallasdallas” to you, but then I started thinking about how I would probably scare you out of the state. I’ve always wanted to email you guys and thank you for being so transparent(so hard to explain, but you’ve just made me realize I can accomplish so much more than I ever thought possible), that I think I would freak out. No. I KNOW I would freak out. I’m a total extrovert so when I freak out, my awkwardness is like a hundred times worse because it’s on such a grand scale. I can’t guarantee what I would do, but I’m sure I’d either shake, making squeaking noises, make a horrible joke and honk-laugh, cry uncontrollably or knock over your display of books.. Of course I plan on making it to one of your signings anyways, so at least now you’ll know who I am :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hah! We’d love to make it out to Dallas! Will keep you posted…

I totally keep thinking this and forgetting to comment it— but when you were like ‘waamp waa’ about photo editing it reminded me again. You guys totally deserve big desktop computer monitors to plug into your laptops at your desk! Can you imagine the workspace across a 24″ widescreen? I know it’s $, but with coupon codes/free shipping/etc I think your awesomeness has earned it :-) Congrats on 5 years!!!
… reupholster, hilarious!
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh yeah, that does sound swanky!

Jill says
Loved the videos! Have to agree with the masses that the Clara ft. Burger video was my fav — Any 2 year old that is down with Rhinna is OK in my book!
Congrats on your 5th blogiversary!
Ofelia, México City says
Oh man! I love the video. I was great to see Clara and Burger next one each other in the interview! So lovely!
Tiffany says
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Now we need a video of Clara going to “Home Depot” – I can only imagine how stinkin’ cute that sounds. :D
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, that girl loves it there! That would be fun to capture on video…

You guys are adorable and funny. I would never want to move out of your house. Love it! Clara is adorable and such a good talker!

This video was so cute! Loved hearing more about you guys. But my favorite was the very end when Clara says “reupholster”! haha
Kiki says
I have to say, I really look forward to watching these videos every year. And Katie Bower is right, John is beyond funny! I loved all of his comments/reactions/facial expressions when you (Sherry) talked about Twilight, the Real Housewives, and tampons. Seriously, you two are the best couple out there!
And Clara was also super cute. That last smile from watching Burger jump up for the dog treat was super cute. Maybe these interviews will be a new blogiversary tradition? I sure hope so!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we’re so on board with interviewing Clara and Burger each year as well!

Dana says
Enchanted is my favorite movie :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, Clara loves that song!

Lauren says
John–I TOTALLY know what you mean about the RHONY “Holla!” at the beginning. Where did that even come from? I’ve heard her say it maybe twice on the show. Is she trying to be “hip” or something? It’s so weird!
Also, Sherry–I’m going to look past the Ramona comment (she was just TOO much for me this week) and ask what you think of Countess Luanne. Do you think she even counts as a Countess? What about the Johnny Depp guy on the island? Sometimes I think she’s the most civil just because she doesn’t like to start stuff, and I’m an anti-confrontation person.
Anyway, love y’all! Your videos were cute. Clara is so precious! I can tell y’all have so much love for her–and Burger, of course.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, I just watched this week’s episode and Ramona is crazy! Looks like next week she’s going to be nuts too! As for the countess I was totally scandalized by the Johnny Dep thing on the island! So weird of her. I cracked up repeatedly when she kept saying she bumped into “the Italians” – hahah!
xo
s
Chrissie says
I think the most exciting part for me was when I realised that you and Clara were singing one of the songs from Enchanted. I love it! These q&a videos are always so interesting. The Twilight question (or rather, the answer) made me laugh so hard!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, oh yes she loves that song!

You guys are all so cute – and so real. Makes me want a best friend like you Sherry, with the Natalie Portman voice and all awkward and funny too! I couldn’t watch at work and just got home to watch the videos. Best part of my day! Thanks.

Aw thanks Jill! You’re so sweet.

What fun are those videos?! I tell my hubby all the time about stuff I learn from you guys, and I made him watch Claras video with me. I seriously shivered every time I heard her crunch on that popsicle lol! Thanks for all your hard work to keep us informed and entertained :-)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Those popsicles are hard!
xo
s
Jon says
Ha haaa… is that what Clara was eating? I was trying to figure that out! I could only think it sounded like a cucumber, but the stick part confused me (I was all like, “is that something new, cucumbers on a stick for kids? How healthy!”). Tee hee. I’ll blame it on the iPad screen being small.
Fab interviews, love them. My top favorite line was, “… there is no summary!” :) That John, he’s a funny one.
YoungHouseLove says
It was actually an ice pop (it’s one of those tiny ones with less sugar that are really crunchy since they’re mostly ice). It was the only way we could keep her in that chair! Haha.
xo,

And oops, that comment from “Jon” above was actually from me, Jon’s wife. Forgot to update the name & such on the iPad! Hahaaa…

I was reading comments and just realized that somehow I thought Clara was saying Avril Lavigne instead of Adam Levine. I was like, “Clara’s keeping it old school- you go girl!”

Sherry, I love your eye make up in the video! What do you use? Clara, is so adorable!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Chelsea! It’s just organic shadow and mascara from Physician’s Formula called Organic Wear. The shadow is just their basic brown color and the mascara is black (it comes in a tube that looks like a green leaf). Hope it helps!

You guys are all so cute! I love these real-life Q&A sessions. Clara and Burger are totally adorable – and I would agree with Clara: Adam Levine probably occupies more than one spot on my favorites list right now. One More Night is my current favorite, too – can’t stop listening!
Jen says
I understand why so many people are clamoring for a YHL show – you guys really are great on camera. But I have to say that I so respect your decision not to go down that road if it’s not something your heart is 100% into. I can only imagine how hard it must be to say “no” to an opportunity like that. It’s only human to want to walk through every door that opens for us in life. And the chance to be on tv is something that many people would jump at, particularly at a time when that kind of celebrity is seen as the ultimate success. But what draws so many people to your blog/book is your genuine enthusiasm and love for what you do. If you did a show just because you felt like you should, and not because you truly wanted to, there is a chance that it wouldn’t have the same appeal and you guys might end up feeling burnt out rather than energized by the endeavor. Anyways, you already seem to know this but I’ll say it anyways: always listen to your guts; they haven’t steered you wrong yet!
Happy blogiversary : )
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! You’re totally right about just needing to trust our gut. It’s so weird how everyone we chat with thinks a tv gig is the ultimate opportunity but we’re like “wait, we never wanted to be on TV, we’ll just be nervous and sweaty and it’s not what we love to do.” Blogging and home stuff, that’s the sweet spot!

In the write up, you said you were answering the question regarding how much you will be earning from the book publishing. I was soooo excited to find out, because it’s something I have ALWAYS been curious about! Did you guys answer that question, because I don’t remember hearing it in the vid? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, the answer is at 17:10 in the video. Hope it helps!

I liked the part about you saying what would people take if they broke in like a pillow. I am sorry but if I was a thief (and I’m not,) I would clean up on your art and throw pillow collection. Ha, Ha. I love the swimming print in your kitchen. I’m considering buying a print like it for my house. I just have not decided where to hang it.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! You’d only have around a minute before the cops pulled up and a lot of the art is velcroed to the wall. Haha! Sounds like a newer version of Supermarket Sweep!

Amazing video! Congrats on 5 years! Thanks for sharing all that with us.
Also, loved the song you had during the question transition, or whatever its called. It was so cute!
PS- Please please come to LI for your book tour!

I just love your Q&A videos, and i love that clara and burger did one this year! I’ve been reading your blog for 2 years or so, and i thought i’ve read every post until someone asked if you STILL only own one bra?! So i obviously missed at least one post (unless it was before that). When did you admit to this? Don’t you need something with more support for activity? For pete’s sake, I wear a sports bra to vacuum! How do you wear the same one to paint in, that you wear under a nice shirt or dress? You just blew my mind.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I just have one. It’s chatted about in a video with Katie Bower a while back. It’s black and convertible (the straps can be removed or made racerback) and it works with every item of clothing I own). I just realized that even if I have ten bras I always have a favorite and I wear that one all the time anyway. And I wash it at night so it’s clean during the daytime when I wear it (and my painting shirt protects it just as well as a nice dress, so it works for all occasions, haha).
