Blogiversary 6: You Asked, We Answered

Get ready to cringe! It’s time for our annual (and always amazingly awkward) Q&A video. Just like in past blogiversary weeks, we invited you guys to ask us some personal (i.e. non-decorating) questions over on our Facebook page last week. And after over 150 questions came rolling in, we sat down and answered as many as we could while Clara napped one afternoon – and then culled it down into this 20 minute video. Among all of our mind-blowing, no-holds-barred revelations (note the sensationalism) you’ll learn:

  • If we’d ever let readers vote on the decorating choices we make
  • What blog post we regret writing
  • Our thoughts on snarky message boards
  • If we ever think about reversing our no-swag policy
  • If we won the lottery, what we’d change about our lives
  • What our neighbors think of the blog
  • If we regret choosing our blog name
  • What ceramic animal I’d save if our house was under a zombie attack
  • How we keep the blog from consuming our lives
  • If our marriage is perfect (spoiler alert: nope!)
  • Why I’ll probably never cut my hair super short again
  • If I still own just one bra
  • THE MUCH ANTICIPATED POSSUM-IN-THE-BASEMENT STORY!!!

So now that you’re most likely on the edge of your seat (… or not) here goes nothing:

So there you have it, another year of us blathering on about personal stuff and mythical horse sized ducks and mysterious mammals in our crawl space. Did anything surprise you? Or spark another question in your brain? We can’t promise we can answer every one of them in the comments here, but feel free to ask away as potential future fodder for next year…

Oh but before we go, let’s talk about you guys for a second. Each year we love finding out who the heck you guys are, and then on Friday John can make a nerd-tastic infographic all about it (last year’s had Beyonce in it, so it might be hard to top that).

    Loved the video – I’m usually at work and never remember to watch your vids when I get home so this was my first! I wanted to say that I really appreciate your “no swag” policy. I work in publishing, and know you all used to work in advertising, so I think that may give you different perspective on the practice of sponsored posts, swag, etc. I cannot tell you how much I dislike sponsored posts – and when a whole bunch of bloggers start posting on the SAME sponsored item around the same time, it just turns me off in a big way. It feels so inauthentic to me, and gives me second thoughts about what those bloggers are writing about the rest of the time – I won’t go on, I’m sure you have a lot of colleagues that do swag but just wanted to say how much I appreciate that you don’t. Puts you into a different category, in my opinion (and may prove to be a pretty savvy business decision down the road, too). Thank you.

      Please don’t judge us by how we nervously react on video. I promise in real life we both giggle less and fidget less and neither of us make a habit of cutting each other off. Things just get weird when the camera’s on, especially when we’re racing through as many questions as we can before Clara wakes up from her nap. I love chatting with my wife. It’s one of the reasons I married her. Well, that and her sense of humor. And her ability to get ready for a date in ten minutes.

      Did not think I was judging. I just asked did you notice? No need to affirm your love for her, which was not in question. I just figured she was doing that because she was nervous in front of,the camera.

    I did the survey but if you decide to add a “livin in sin” option for those of us who aren’t married but don’t much care to refer to a significant other as “boyfriend/girlfriend” past the age of 19, then add another one to the count.

    Could you all be any cuter? Just when I was thinking you guys were almost too perfect you mentioned that you do fight and get annoyed with each other! Whew! LOL You have great chemistry though, you can just tell. ;) A sense of humor is very important in any relationship I believe!

    I would love to move to Richmond just because of how awesome you guys make it sound and the pics you show! I wouldn’t stalk you though I promise! Ha! I’m sick of Florida but don’t want to move too far North, I’m kind of a wimp in the cold.

    I TOTALLY do fruit on my frogurt too. It’s almost always strawberries and boba on some kind of fruity frogurt (which is what all the cool kids call it).

    So fun! My almost three year old watched Clara’s video probably five times! She told me to tell Clara (like I really know her) that she has a barkey Chihuahua dog too!

    I gotta say as far as the snarky types, I totally have your back. I’ve been on a message board where someone says something mean about the blog or a post or something and I’m like, “Excuse me? How would you feel or–” Blah, blah, blah. I totally couldn’t handle the random spite that happens on the Net.

    OMG I’m basically a celebrity now.

    In my fantasy version of “Treat Yo Self” day, I’d watch Katie Bower scream “two bras! TWO BRAS!!!” and then (gently) chest bump you to the ground over and over again. And I’d have a Starbucks pumpkin something and try very hard not to spew it all over myself while I laughed along.

    I was up to three bras for a little while (talk about swagger) but now I’m back down to one. And this year I was all psyched that I could finally check the dating box instead of the single box (moving up, holler!). Bloggiversary Week is the best. You are the greatest internet friends of my life <3

    I have to admit… I woke up really excited because I knew the Q&A video would up today! I’m so glad I found my headphones a few weeks ago to watch this at work. OMG Clara has grown up so much! :) Keep up the work!

    I can’t believe that I’ve been following you guys like the last 3-4 years! I remember when you announced you were moving into the second house, I emailed my husband and said, “YHL IS MOVING!!!!!!” like you guys are my buds hahahah

    Great videos guys! I love Blogiversary week! Also, don’t let the haters get you down. You run a well-written, interesting, informative and funny blog. Do I always agree with your design choices? No, but I doubt you’d agree with all of mine haha! The world would be a pretty boring place if we were all exactly the same. Keep up the good work, and here’s to another six years!

    Totally random…can you make duct tape colors in the same patterns that you have on your shades in the lighting designs?

    And have you put one of your lights in the new house yet? The office area maybe?

      Love the duct tape idea, although I’m not sure Shades of Light is in on the duct tape making game. Will pass it along and see what they think though! As for using our lights somewhere in this house, I can’t wait for a few more rooms to come together more so we can see where they’ll fit. We don’t want to fill the whole house with them (feels kinda weird to do that, haha!) but we’d love to work in one or two like we did at our last place!

      I would be SO BAD AT THAT GAME! I can’t read a map and I only run when my life is at stake. John would be amazing though. Great with maps, good running endurance, smart as a tack. I think he’d win if he went on with his best guy friend.

    This is the only house and home type blog that I read. I’m not really here for the clever ideas or the pretty pictures (though there are so many!). I just love your personalities and the fun way you tell your story. Just wanted to tell you.

    Also, my 2-year-old thinks Clara and Burger are the BEST ever.

    The “you might say that I’m a” question was so funny to me because just last night I had a dream about you guys! So of course I said I was a dreamer :)
    The short of the dream is this- Even though I currently live in Phoenix, I was living back in my home town which is a small farming community in Utah. You guys came and dropped by my newly purchased home (which was my childhood home) and were helping me decorate/renovate. Some people from the community stopped by and I told them that John was Ryan Seacrest. I only fooled a few people, the majority knew who you were.
    WEIRD… first off I had no idea Ryan Seacrest was on my A-list and I guess in my sub conscience you guys are major celebrities.

    LOVED THIS! I was in stitches laughing and Clara is so sweet (and crazy smart, too!)
    I’ve been filling in your blogiversary polls since you first started them and this is the first year I’ve been able to say I’m in my 20’s. It makes we really weirdly happy (21 in 10 days baby aww yesss!)
