We’ve once again solicited questions from you guys on Facebook for our blogiversary extravaganza (of the personal, not decorating, variety). And just like we did in 2009 and 2010, we had fun answering a bunch of ’em. We crammed as many responses as we could into 20 minutes, so unfortunately not every one of the 80+ questions got answered, but we figured 20 minutes was already pushing the bounds of an acceptable YouTube video length. Haha. Here are a few things that we cover:
- Our favorite and least favorite qualities in each other
- What our neighbors think about the blog
- If the former owners of our house read the blog
- Our weirdest fan interaction
- Who Clara looks more like
- How we deal with negative criticism
- What we wanted to be when we grew up
- What will happen to our blog name when we’re not young anymore
- If we ever fight or spend time apart
- And most importantly: John’s thoughts on the new Twilight movie
And of course there are a bunch of other questions, a Burger cameo, and John cycles through soda shirts just to keep things spicy. Oh but if you’re at work you can still watch it on mute and try to guess what I’m gesturing wildly about (or wait until tonight and watch it with some popcorn and take a swig of soda every time John changes shirts). Our only video-recording rule is that we’re not allowed to re-answer anything so it’s completely unscripted and sort of an all-one-take kind of thing (that we later edit down just to shorten things/take out the “ummmms” so we can squeeze more answers in). We don’t even read the questions until we’re rolling, so we don’t overthink or overplan – but sometimes we over-share. Haha. Who’s surprised.
And just because we’re chatterboxes, this year we tossed in three bonus business-related answers:
Q: How did you get sponsors? Do you solicit advertising? What’s the secret? First we wrote about 200 posts and had been blogging for a while without even thinking about sponsors, just because it was something we loved to do. We actually had no idea there were even people or companies who sponsored blogs, we just thought of it as a fun creative outlet/diary. Then it slowly dawned on us that because we were gaining more traffic and posting every day, maybe some local folks or small online businesses would like to get a button on our sidebar in exchange for a tiny fee. So we tossed up a “wanna advertise with us?” button just to see what would happen. We thought it would be awesome to make a few extra dollars to put towards projects, but definitely didn’t have high hopes. Much to our surprise and amazement, a few small companies and Etsy vendors emailed us to say that they were happy to give it a try. So we just shared our stats and offered people a flat fee for the month and a slightly discounted fee for the quarter.
To this day we actually still use the same system. There are definitely more intricate ways of charging sponsors (like per click, per view, etc) and even more complex ways of calculating rates. But we decided to keep it simple and start with a flat rate that we felt was fair (based on what we saw other sites charging with comparable traffic) and just let the sponsors tell us if it was too high (and if they did, we’d adjust). If it was too low, well, we love a deal – so we figured why not offer one ourselves (after all, we were satisfied with that rate since we were the ones who came up with it). That system seems to be working for everyone, so much so that we haven’t raised our rates in almost two years (despite a great increase in traffic since then).
When it comes to managing sponsorships, we use Google Ad Manager to organize everything. It not only serves the ads to our site, but also helps us keep track of expirations so John can send renewal emails / invoices. So it’s a bit of paperwork on our end, but completely worth the effort since our sponsors are a big part of what makes this blog possible. There’s definitely not a get rich quick aspect to blogging (at least not in our experience), but we’ve seen that by focusing on content first and readers second, the sponsors will gradually fall into place.
***********************
Q: Do you have to post a certain amount of times each month for sponsors? Nope, as we mentioned above, they pay a flat fee per month so no traffic or amount of posts are expected or promised. We’ve just posted 1-2 times a day about the same range of stuff for the past few years, so it’s a pace that works for us. Some juicy stuff + some light stuff + some personal stuff = a comfortable mix. Posting in some sort of regular rhythm provides structure and helps keep our creative juices flowing. If we stopped blogging every time we were in a rut or ran into a snafu we worry we might never start again. Gotta keep that momentum up! <– picture me in a bodysuit and legwarmers saying this in a sing-song-y voice a la workout videos from the eighties
***********************
Q: Aren’t you scared to have so little job security when your whole family’s income relies on this blog? We’re not gonna lie, it can freak us out if we think about it too much. But we’ve squirreled away the recommended amount of “safety net savings” to fall back on if this ol’ blog suddenly grinds to a halt (which we built up before John came on full time as some sort of “insurance” to quell the nerves). We also have side gigs (like our column for BabyCenter and Do It Yourself magazine along with the book that we’re writing), so that helps us feel semi-diversified.
We also both left advertising on very good terms with former employers/clients, so that’s another road we could explore if we ever needed to (and John still takes on the occasional advertising consulting job on the side, just to keep his toe in the water). In the end I always say that five years ago we had no idea we’d be here doing this, so trying to figure out what we’ll be doing in five more years is probably an exercise in futility. We just do our best to keep chugging along and try not to let the neurotic thoughts creep in!
***********************
So there it is, twenty minutes of video evidence confirming that we’re dorks and three bonus bidness questions. What surprised you guys most? Was it the fact that I make up sayings that aren’t really sayings and then collapse into a ball of giggles? Or that John is so into Twilight movies? Will anyone else help me make “I took that baby to the market and carried it home” a real saying? Come on, it’s kind of catchy…
Update – Some of the most frequent requests that we get are for info about professionally blogging (how we made our site, how we grew our following, how we make money, etc) so we shared all of the details about how we started a blog, grew our traffic, and turned it into a full time job.
Ericka says
You guys are so stinkin’ cute:)
Briel K. says
I totally could have watched way more than 20 minutes of you two! And yes, we all do want to be your BFF’s. Sherry, I love your sense of humor (you were cracking me up in the video!) and John seems like a great guy…why wouldn’t we all want to be your friend? :) I loved your fan encounter stories. haha
Jennifer says
I can’t believe you guys think Clara favors John. I think she totally has Sherry’s mouth 110%. Either way, she’s a beauty! :)

Aw thanks! I love hearing that I’m in there too.

Fun video!!!! Loved that little logo stamp at the very end! Are you guys using that anywhere? It’s fun!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks! That was something we added in the final hour! Haven’t used it anywhere else but would love to work it in…

Shirley from Funchkins says
Hi there, your blog is GRRRReat!! You guys are really funny. Thanks so much for answering the questions.
Andrea B says
I love that one of John’s early jobs was shelving books in a library and he ALMOST had the Dewey Decimal system memorized. Me, too! I forever have this weird numerical association with information. Like, you know, that health = 610s, writing = 800s, and history of North America = 970s.
YoungHouseLove says
All my fellow high school employees and I remember 613 = “sexuality books.” Oh where your mind is at seventeen…

Happy Blogiversary! You guys are the cutest! My husband is a tool/remote control/etc thrower when he gets frustrated too. Haha.
Vonda says
I love blogiversary week!!
One of these days I’m sure our paths will cross (I’m always on the lookout in familiar places), RVA isn’t that huge but hopefully it won’t be one of your weird fan encounters (or mine)!!!
Sydney says
Ok seriously that did not feel like 20 minutes…I was laughing so much I couldn’t believe when it was already over. Sherry, I have made up sayings before too and then have everyone stare at me like I was a zomibe, so I really cracked up at your “baby to market”. Also, I have to admit that your “religion” answer was slightly too vague for me. Do you guys ever attend church or anything?
YoungHouseLove says
Sure! Not every week but not never. Hope it helps.

Bria says
You two are SO cute! Thank you for the great q&a session and happy blogiversary!!
Donna says
Sherry, try not to freak out about the job security thing. No one really has it, especially in this day and age. Plus, my very wise Grandma always said ” do what you love, and the money will follow ” but if you do something just to make money, you’ll be miserable. Love your Missoni headband, girl!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks! Can you believe that headband was still at our Target a few days after the big sale craziness when almost everything else was cleaned out? I think because it was hiding in the make-up area. I took it as a sign that it needed to come home with me…
xo,

Sherry you are a doll!! Of course we’d love to be your bff woman!!
I loved this video, you both seem so sweet and easygoing.
*Michelle says
The Donkey Riding song… are you referring to Great Big Sea?
YoungHouseLove says
The Donkey Riding song is on our Musik Garten CD (Clara takes a class once a week and they give us a cd with a bunch of random songs on it). The chorus is: “Hi-ho, away we go – donkey riding, donkey riding. Hi-ho away we go, riding on a donkey.” Good stuff.

Lisa says
Love your video! I’d love to be your BFF and yes you all are famous LOL! Can’t wait to see you all on TV someday!
Hanna says
Awesome videos you guys… definitely laughed out loud SEVERAL times. Good thing I am working at home today.
I liked the comment you made about reader blogs and comments. I have to say, I never used to read comments until I started reading your blog. Then I realized what a wealth of information they were — several things I’ve done in my house have been inspired by blogs or suggestions I found in your reader’s comments.
Side note: I am getting the disappearing background thing too, but only in Google Chrome. It looks fine in Internet Explorer.
YoungHouseLove says
So strange. Is everyone else with the disappearing background in chrome? Maybe it’s a little glitch on their end? Definitely let us know if it’s not back by tomorrow (sometimes these things clear themselves up within about 24 hours).
xo,
s
Jane says
Sometimes I get the blinking on Chrome, but it’s not a big deal. It’s like the grey hearts want to be all over the page, but then suddenly it goes back to white background (for the text and side bar portion) and the grey hearts around it. It’s like it takes a little bit longer to load the page, but it doesn’t happen every time. I have been have some problems with Chrome lately, though, like Flashplayer not working, etc. Problem might be on their end, not yours.
YoungHouseLove says
Ha! I love the idea that the “the grey hearts want to be all over the page.” Let’s just blame it on them… crazy, narcissistic hearts…
-John
Mary@TheGoodLife says
Totally. Those narcissistic hearts like to flash on my IE8..9?, too, but I kinda like it. It goes back to normal in a flash.
Susan says
I’m in Chrome and they are blinking out on me and not coming back. I’ve got the font change thing going on, too.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man- so far it seems to be a chrome thing but someone had an issue in IE. Very weird. here’s hoping it’s a less than 24 hour glitch and it’s all good tomorrow. Definitely let us know if it’s not!
xo,
s
Martha says
I always view the blog in Chrome and I haven’t had any problems at all – on any of my computers. I wonder if there’s some glitchy extension some people have installed in their Chrome browser that could cause this issue?
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, it’s all so weird and random. Has anyone who had the issue this morning noticed that it’s resolved? Or is it still glitchy this afternoon?
xo,
s
Andrew says
I can’t believe you didn’t censor Burger’s bits…

Hey! LOVED the video– you guys are so fantastic together. This is a side note/question: I’m looking into good quality movie clip creating and editing for a side project I’m working on. I always love your videos. What sort of tips/software/methods do you use? Any things to be sure to include or consider in making a video clip? Thanks so much!!
YoungHouseLove says
We film using a FlipHD and edit in iMovie (09, I think). As for tips, just be patient, don’t try to do anything too complex with iMovie and watch it through once to listen for sound levels. iMovie isn’t great for adjusting sound (in my opinion) but it has helped me dodge having a really quiet clip followed by a really loud one. Those are just a few tips off the top of my head…

toni from says
You guys are too funny, love the video. I especially loved your fan experiences, I would probably start screaming if I saw you in public, and since I only live one state away now instead of on the opposite side of the US, it just might happen. Wow, that sounds really stockerific-I just meant I could bump into you while in Virginia. LOL. Also love the hooter comment, you guys are hilarious. John’s face when you say that is just priceless.
Dani Wellemeyer says
So…this video made me realized that me and my husband, Nick, are pretty much the same couple as you guys. I’m all like, aaahhhh! all the time, and Nick is all chill and correcty, and we’re both gigantic nerds. AND ALSO, (I’m feeling so connected to you guys) I was a lifeguard for a zillion summers, and now I’m in school to be a librarian. So we would totes def be BFFs if we knew each other in real life.
P.S. that is so hilarious that the cool career to want when we were kids was marine biologist. Where did that come from? I used to know so many future marine biologists. Now I don’t know any.
YoungHouseLove says
So true. Do kids today still want to be marine biologists or is that just a child of the 80’s thing? Haha.
xo,
s
Lindsay says
I definitely used to want to be a marine biologist… until one day, some show I was watching on tv had a marine mammal scientist on it. So then I jumped all over that, and that is what I wanted to be. That way, I could focus on just the mammals, not the plants and organisms and all that other boring, non-interesting stuff. Ya know, just the cute stuff like dolphins and whales. haha! It was gonna be great!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, that sounds like another pretty sweet plan. Hilarious what we latch onto.

Jane says
You guys are rock (should I say DIY) stars! I am trying to be more careful with the number of comments I post. I feel bad about how much time goes into approving comments. Is there a feature like the new TSA Frequent traveler, i.e, comments from trusted sources would be approved automatically?
I am still a little confused about how you guys will be able to separate blog projects from book projects.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, we wish- but there’s actually not a capability to let trusted comments through since our spam software interferes with that function so it’s not workable. But we love reading comments from the frequent commenters because you’re like friends to us! Haha. As for how we’re going to be able to secretly do hundreds of projects for the book behind the scenes and then have secret photoshoots in our house- yeah we haven’t the foggiest. Haha. It’s definitely going to be one of those figure-it-out-as-you-go things…

You two are hilarious! Just watching that video put me in a very good mood. And John… those soda shirts…nicely done!

Also Jen, I am sure you already know this but Jen from iheartorganizing is going to be on the Nate Berkus show on Monday discussing her house love, or something like that. I am going to watch, it is on at 2pm in North Carolina, not sure about Virginia, but I just wanted you to know in case you missed it.

I think you guys are famous!! Labor day weekend my husband and I visited Richmond on our way home (Greenville, SC) from Williamsburg, VA and I purposely went into a Target hoping I’d run into you! Come to find out you were in Delaware with the family. My husband called me weird, but I was on a quest to run into John & Sherry!
YoungHouseLove says
LOL, sorry we weren’t in town. But Target was definitely a smart place to try to spot us!

I know that you both briefly touched upon your musical taste in the video and I thought I would pass along a band for you to check out. Pomplamoose is really fun, humorous, caring, independent and all around awesome! It may not be your usual listening but they do great covers (including Beyonce & Lady GaGa to name a few) as well as catchy original tunes. You may have even seen them this winter in Hyundai commercials. I have been listening to them for quite a while and I love them and I hope you will as well. Let me know what you think.

I’ll pretend I didn’t hear the part about lady gaga and only hear the Vampire Weekend. p.s. i really liked their second album Contra, but my husband thought it was too electronic

you have been in dreams of mine (as have other bloggers, but never Beyonce-haha). . . i think it’s because i read your blog daily it infuses you into my daily life- like talking to my bff on the phone every day. Always something weird, like Sherry, a girl from high school I haven’t seen in 10 years, and myself will be trying to escape from prison. Yup, i’m a freak :)
Loved the video and LOVED the baby center post. My hubs was a SAHD for a few months and then we traded places, but it was such a special time for him and our daughter.

Hi John & Sherry, I just have to say that I LOVE YOUR BLOG!! I came accross it a few weeks ago thru pinterest and have been spending way too much of my workday reading all of your past posts ever since. I cannot wait to get home and watch this years Q & A. Ohh and I feel like I have to admit, since this is my very first comment, that my mother has pointed out I call you by your first name ‘like we are BFF’s’ and really know each other. I hope that doesn’t totally creep you out, but I also think that you are like friends to your readers. I really enjoy getting to peak into the life of other new parents “keeping it real” & trying to do the best they can without a million dollars. Keep up the great work & Happy Blogiversary!!
Kati W. says
I loved this video! I watched it at work (with headphones!) and was crying from laughing so hard. Thanks!
A few things:
1) Yes, people want to be your BFF. How do I know this? I’ll let you guess…
2) My John is the same — no drinking, but everyone loves him for being DD. I’m like Sherry — I’ll have a glass of wine or something, but I’m not one to get overwhelmed
3) John, you’re cute but yeah… Let’s hope Clara looks like Sherry!
Good video guys! I am LOVING blogiversary!
Lisa says
You two are so cute together! Sherry, your laugh is infectious! And I think you look good in black. Goes good with your beautiful skin. Hope you all have a great day!
God bless and keep you.

You two are so sweet. This was a great post. I painted for the first time the other day and used your cutting in tutorial! It went really well and the office and spare room now look great! Thanks! XX

Oh man, you guys crack me up! I totally would love to be your friend, especially since my hubby is handy and builds things around the house too! I’m sure we’d all get along :-) Thanks for making and posting such a hilarious video. Wish I was in your town, I’d probably drive around trying to have a “John & Sherry sighting” ;-)

I find it so funny to hear the way that you describe Richmond! Family friendly, totally, but little traffic?! I guess it’s because you came here from NYC…I grew up in a much smaller area (picture Midlo or Bon Air w/o the rest of the city around it). When I moved here I was overwhelmed! I mean, I pretty much love it now, but my poor parents when they come to visit HATE driving here! But I do love that there is so much to do around town, especially now that I have a child!
Do you guys have any particular things that you like to do as a family around good ole RVA? (Now that my son is 15 mo and much more observant, I’m always looking for good suggestions of things to do/places to go as a family.)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes! We love Maymont (free mini zoo!!!) and going to the river for walks on the trails (Pony Pasture) and eating at Bottoms Up (outside on a nice day) and even trecking out to the Richmond Zoo. Oh and we love the Children’s Museum too. And walking around the fan with a stroller and the dog.
xo,

Donna Jean says
Thanks!!! My husband grew up in Mechanicsville and loves Bottoms Up, but in the almost 6 years that we have been together has yet to take me there! I’ll have to get on that. Thanks for the great suggestions – all places that I’ve heard of and always manage to forget.
We do love the occasional stroll around Carytown – my son is such a people/car watcher and absolutely loves it (plus it’s a good excuse to stop by Franklin Goose and gawk and all the cute cloth diapers and kids’ toys that I would love to buy!)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah Carytown is awesome too! Maybe we’ll bump into each other there!

Mary@TheGoodLife says
Your best Q&A yet. SO hilarious. “I’m annoyed with you right now” hahaha so funny. You’re totally secretly pregnant again, aren’t you? Hehehee, you definitely had a mischievous eye twinkle happening.
Question: how did you survey for comparable rates for sponsors? this part- “what we saw other sites charging with comparable traffic” how did you find those stats on other sites?
Oh and just as a side note- I live in Pismo Beach, CA. 90% of my friends still live here, and I’d say most of them know YHL. I would definitely say that changed overnigh in probably the last six months with Pinterest, but still. Pretty impressive. You guys should come out here for a little vacay when you’re doing book promotion. We love us some YHL! Okay, I just took that baby to the market and back, so maybe I should wrap this up now…. lol….
YoungHouseLove says
Nope! 100% not prego. Haha. I’m not allowed to get prego for another full year since I had some complications with Clara and am under strict doctor’s orders to wait. We’re ok with that though- Clara keeps us plenty busy! Haha. As for how we surveyed for comparable rates, we just went to other blogs and clicked their advertise buttons (which usually said their rates and traffic) and just tried to come in under those so we knew we were giving folks a deal since we were so new at it and never feel comfortable being too aggressive with that stuff. Oh and as for Prismo Beach- it sounds like a magical place that we’ll have to visit!
xo,
s
Mary@TheGoodLife says
WOW! I knew Clara’s birth was scary and traumatic, but I am in shock that it’s left this kind of lasting impact. I mean, I totally get it. I just- wow. I was really battered by the birth of my little guy, but nothing to that extent. I couldn’t walk outside the house for 8 weeks, and I just remember how rough it was when you add that onto the expected shock of adjusting to a new baby (breastfeeding, no sleep, etc). It was hard. HARD. So I can’t even imagine. I just want to give you a big comment hug, okay? A mom-comment hug. I know you are made of the strongest stuff out there, and you’ve got John and a great family. But still- huge (perhaps awkwardly long hehe) comment hug. You are incredible for bringing that child into the world. She is probably destined for greatness ;)

Aw thanks Mary! I think she’s destined for greatness too.

This week is a great week, as a reader! I love hearing the behind the scenes scoop. :) I especially love the videos that you both star in ‘on TV.’ It’s really weird to watch you because I feel like I know you and when my husband says something in a certain way, I’ll say ‘that sounds like Sherry or John!?’ and he rolls his eyes. ;)
ps. I ADORE your heart tiled background! Good work!
Jill says
Awww Johnny, you made me tear with your Baby Center post! Sahhhh sweeeet :)
I’m going to try to watch the video on my Droid here at work… :)
Sarah says
I really appreciate that you both are not in any way political or religious on your blog. There is so much heated rhetoric on the web and on the news, that it is a nice respite to read the blog about your beautiful house and your daily lives. Your personalities are the super spice that keeps it fresh and lively. So thank you for keeping it real and down-to-earth.
Allison B says
Seriously, yall are DA BOMB! HAHA! “HOOTER HOTTER” Next time one of you gets frustrated, you can just say “Hooter Hotter” for a laugh. Hey, I might use that myself! :) Great “vlog” – does that word seem kinda creepy to anyone else? I would totally buy a “John and Sherry’s BFF” tshirt! And a Sherry lamp shade hat… :)
PS: the background drops out after a few second for me too, if I’m using IE, but not if using Firefox.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s such a mystery to us about the background. So sorry for the trouble! Apparently it’s happening in a few different browsers (Chrome and IE) but we didn’t change anything on our end, so maybe it’s something that will un-glitch within 24 hours? Definitely let us know if it doesn’t!

OK, this was my most favorite blog post from you guys EVER!!!! I loved the video- in fact my son asked me seven minutes into it if I was watching something funny. (I had ear plugs in because we home-school and I didn’t want to interrupt his focus.) He was watching my expressions quite “unbeknownst” to me! You answered most of the questions which pop into my ever-curious mind from time to time, but I do wonder which one of you is most likely to clean your home. I know you get things ready to photograph but it’s obvious that someone(s) keep things neat and clean anyway. Oh… and who does most of the cooking? Keep on keeping it real. I love you guys!
YoungHouseLove says
John does nearly all of the cooking (and actually likes it) – I’m a lucky lady! I probably do the bulk of the cleaning/organizing though (although John does laundry). It’s a nice little balance.

Aww, I just love your bliggity bloggity. It makes me happy!
sandra says
Just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your blog because it is grassroots and you guys are authentic.
Also, I didn’t realize the “Young” of Young House Love was referring to you guys as being young. I always thought it meant that you loved brand new up-to-date houses or a “young house”, but because they were so expensive you decided to purchase an older house and give it a young look. Obviously, the new header cleared that up for me. Hugs to you all & happy blogiversary.
Kinsey says
You guys remind me of my husband and I interaction wise. He’s also sweet and sentimental, but has a habit of correcting people on pronunciation and whatnot. He explained to me that when he cares about the person doing the mispronouncing, he wants to tell them at the time how the word is supposed to be said so that someone mean doesn’t embarrass/make fun of them for it later. At least his intentions are good! He also doesn’t drink and is always DD (which everyone loves and appreciates). Maybe he and John are kindred! Anyway, you guys are THE cutest and I loved the video!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, they do sound kindred!

KathyG says
I don’t think you’ve answered this, why do you limit your sponsers to 5 and 19?
YoungHouseLove says
We just didn’t want things to get too crazy on the sidebar to the point that it was distracting (and to the point that our sponsors didn’t get as many clicks because they’d be competing with so many other boxes). For some reason it visually looked ok to us with this number but we weren’t comfortable adding more, so we actually have a waiting list now. But we like having a cap so it keeps things from getting too nuts.
