Blue Calcite is a rare version of an otherwise common mineral – and it’s one of my favorites to collect! Calcite is found all around the world and is a key ingredient in limestone, marble, and other building materials. Blue calcite, on the other hand, is a beautiful crystal that’s less common and is said to have calming properties. It definitely has a peaceful look to it – like a soft blue sky or peaceful blue waters.
I have several blue calcite crystals in my home, like the large one on the open shelves in our bedroom. Their rich moody color and polished surface looks good with everything, and definitely adds a nice calming vibe.
What Is Blue Calcite?
Calcite is typically a white or colorless mineral, but it can be found in almost any color: red, pink, green, orange, and even rainbow banded. Blue is one of the most commonly sought-after colors when it comes to calcite – and I am always a fan of blue when I’m looking for crystals to add to my shelves or tabletops. So while blue calcite is less common than white calcite, this blue variety is widely available for sale as polished stones, in the healing crystals arena, and in jewelry.
Blue calcite deposits can be found all over the world and in a variety of shades. They range from pale to deep blue, and from opaque or slightly translucent. It’s said that the specific blue shades can often help you pinpoint its country of origin. Most blue calcites come from Mexico, but they’re also commonly found in the United States, Canada, Madagascar, Iceland, and South Africa.

What Is Blue Calcite’s Meaning?
Blue calcite is believed to have soothing & calming properties. It is said to increase feelings of peace, tranquility, and relaxation. This is why it is often paired with mindfulness practices like meditation. People like to hold it or display it as a reminder to take some calming deep breaths and the crystal lore is that it can help you reduce stress, improve communication, and boost creativity. It is also thought to “soothe the throat” – which means blue calcite is connected to the concept of gaining mental clarity, helping you find the right words, and speak more thoughtfully. Maybe I should hold it the next time I’m in a debate with John about why buying crystals is always a good idea.
Crystal Properties
In addition to its beautiful color, many seek out blue calcite for a range of reported metaphysical properties. Those include:
- Calmer thoughts
- Increased relaxation
- Reduced stress
- Soothing fears
- Encouraging rest
- Improved communication
- Mental clarity
- Clearing negativity
Where Should You Put Blue Calcite?
Blue calcite’s beautiful color makes it easy to incorporate in any room of your home. If you’d like to embrace some of its spiritual properties, you can consider placing yours in the following rooms:
- A living room or bedroom where you like to rest and unwind
- A bathroom to enhance a soothing spa-like vibe
- A yoga or meditation space to support that calming vibe
- A study, office, or creative space where you write or generate ideas
Blue calcite is also sold as jewelry and can be worn as another way to promote these feelings. Also, some people like carrying small polished blue calcite stones in their pocket or even in their bra. It’s a thing!
Blue Calcite vs Celestine
Blue calcite is commonly mixed up with celestite (also called celestine) due to its similar soft blue color. Even crystal shops mix them up! Due to differences in how they form, blue calcite is more typically sold as polished stones, polished shapes, or raw chunks. Celestite is more likely to be sold as geodes or crystals with a matrix. Celestite is also about 50% heavier than blue calcite. The photo above is an example of how blue calcite and celestite can differ.
Other Blue Calcite FAQs
What crystals can I pair with blue calcite?
Many believe that pairing crystals together can intensify some of their mystical metaphysical benefits. Here are some popular combinations:
- Blue calcite + celestite: to heighten inner vision
- Blue calcite + black obsidian: for protection from harm
- Blue calcite + turquoise: to improve communication
- Blue calcite + amethyst: to increase calm & creativity
I actually have all of the crystals listed above, and commonly display mine with turquoise, celestite, and amethyst. So it’s fun to read that they’re good together. They certainly look beautiful together too.
How do you care for blue calcite?
Blue calcite is a soft stone (a 3 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness) so it can scratch fairly easily if you are rough with it. Use a dry cloth to dust your blue calcite. Wiping with warm water and soap can work as well, just be careful not to use harsh or acidic cleansers. Submerging calcite can cause it to crumble or break. If your calcite is stained, you can spot-treat it with white vinegar, but take care not to leave that on the surface too long. Generally speaking, I just dust mine with a feather duster and put it outside in the moonlight when it’s a full moon. See the next question below for more on that.
How do you charge blue calcite?
Since sunlight can fade its signature blue color, the common recommendation is to put blue calcite outside in the moonlight if you’d like to charge it. I leave mine outside overnight when there is a full moon whenever I remember, but I’m sure to keep it away from the risk of rain. Some people also charge blue calcite by wrapping it in cloth and burying it in the ground for at least an hour. You can also just place it on top of the ground for an hour to achieve the same effect. Here are more charging ideas.
Where To Buy Blue Calcite
I have a lot of places I like to purchase crystals (as well as in person in local crystal shops anywhere that I live or travel to), so here are a few online options for buying blue calcite:
