It’s Friday! Let’s get mathy up in here. By now you know I’m a card carrying facts & figures nerd (here’s Exhibit A and Exhibit B) so when Sherry and I started to notice some unique stats about our new house my throat basically erupted with “LEMMEDOSOMEINFOGRAPHICSPLEEEEEASE.”
Whether she actually was keen on the idea or was just worried that disagreeing would turn me into some beastly werewolf-statistician, this post was born. We always end up loving random time capsule posts like this the most in hindsight (it’s fun to look back at things we probably would have forgotten otherwise, like this, this, this, this, and this). So in the name of some headed-into-the-weekend fun (because, you guessed it, we’re busy painting something) here are the infographicized facts about life in our new house:
What fact struck you the most? Was it Sherry’s creepy birds-under-glass problem? How do they breathe!?
Trischa says
I was shocked by th deck space. Our house is only 850sq feet :)
YoungHouseLove says
So crazy right!? We both lived in 400 square foot apartments in NYC so it blew our minds when we measured it (twice to be sure we weren’t mistaken!).

Infographics are my absolute favorite! I need to start hoarding white frames so I can FINALLY finish our frame wall :)
Maureen says
The sinks are the worst. Hands down. Not even the faux brick seems as horrible. I guess in my mind I could rip that floor up faster than I could replace 5 wretched sinks.
Jennifer R. says
128 Frames!!! 92% of which are beautifully crisp white?!? I’m not sure if I am surprised or just envious!
Yes, it’s envy. Since I will be painting about 10 yard sale frames this weekend to rack up a grand total of perhaps half of yours. :o) Do you guys actually plan to display all of those or do you keep quite a few in storage for switching out displays around the house?
YoungHouseLove says
I think since our last house had all of them on the wall and was around the same size a good number of them have good odds of being on the wall again. Should be fun to see where they end up!

I want to know more about the deer that followed you INTO the garage…
YoungHouseLove says
Apparently John is very attractive to that doe, because she followed him right into the garage, looking him right in the eye and batting her eyelashes. I think it was a first date.

Diane says
Mistress Peg sent him over to remind John that his callous betrayal is not forgotten. Not one bit.
Liana says
My pick would have to be the windows. SO many windows…
Very fun post this morning! Of course I love reading for the DIY/home decor/family things you write about, but honestly you both make me laugh so much all week while reading your posts – just want you to know your humor is appreciated. It makes for a wonderful break in my day!
Carolyn L says
Hands down – I did a triple-take on the number and consistent use of seashell sinks!! The previous owners knew what they liked and they committed for sure! :)
Jennifer says
I feel your pain … 5 inches of sink depth, too!! Hopeful to change that soon! Your infographics blogs are my favorite :)
Deanna says
Oh goodness, me! That miniscule mirror and those three different floors! Yee gads! The visual scariness of those images is contrasted only but the insane amount of cuteness in the photo of Burger and Clara on the deck! Thank you for providing that bit of balm (and good luck with those floors!).
Sarah says
1.Your master bathroom mirror made me giggle…sooo small?!
2.Your deck is larger than my apartment, made me stop giggling.
I definitely tried to see if I could say “5 sea-shell shaped sinks” fast 5 times..nope.
Kate W. says
Your comment made me giggle. I’m with you on the teeny tiny apartment problem!
Elizabeth @ Real Inspired says
Oh my! Loved this post! That itty bitty mirror…and that’s the master bath?! Mirrors are hard enough to share when they’re normal sized. I feel for you with that little kitchen sink most of all though. That is rough!
Sarah says
ha! your deck has more square footage than my entire apartment! #chicago #cityliving
Jenny G. says
Two words: Nicki. Minaj.
Tyra says
Similar to your flooring downstairs we have 4 types (not including bathrooms) in our 1700 sqft ranch. We have one spot where they all come together (similar to your pic) and we jokingly play twister there. Right hand faux brick, left foot hardwood!
Faith@The Stirring Place says
surprisingly, that sink depth scares me the most. deep sinks are the way to my heart.
Lauren says
FYI, and sorry if someone (inevitably) beat me to it, but the infographic didn’t show up in bloglovin.
Also, is it weird that I like some of those wallpapers? Especially the graph paper one…
YoungHouseLove says
It’s so weird that it didn’t work on bloglovin – so sorry! Seemed to come through feedly fine. Anyone have any idea why bloglovin has something against John’s infographics?

Tyra says
I second that question…..I don’t think ive seen it before and I feel like I know all your art! ;)
Tyra says
Oops replied to the wrong comment. Was wondering what the frame with the black print says….
YoungHouseLove says
It was on our gallery wall, so I think you can see it back in that post (search “it’s done and we heart it” and I think it comes up)

LOVE THIS! I’m a bit slow on the uptake today and spent far too long thinking ‘What the HECK is a sea-shaped shell-sink’? Then I looked at the picture and realised I needed to read across. Wow. Also loving the little injection of Minaj.
Lisa says
Oh man that 5 inch sink must be a killer. We had a 6 inch deep kitchen sink in our house for 2 years, we just re-did our kitchen and now have a 10 inch deep sink and it is HEAVENLY! Its crazy how much happier that 4 inches makes me :)
Ash says
Great post John! Besides the random Nicki Minaj I shuttered a bit over the 21 windows to be painted (seriously 21!?!?!). I just got done stripping, sanding and painting the ancient wood frame windows on our house. Looks great now but what a nightmare!
lisak says
5 inches of kitchen sink depth. That’s gotta go. Been there, done that. I can’t imagine why anyone thinks that’s enough depth to wash a pot, ever.
Tasha says
The shell sinks! Cute for a theme (in ONE bathroom, or maybe a beach house), but not all over the house!
Alison says
The shallow sink has to be the one I relate to most and the most annoying on a daily basis!! Aren’t they awful?!?
Brittney Everett says
The sea shell sinks made me laugh! Who has that many!? and the tiny master mirror. You talked about how Low it was, but it also crazy how small it is!
Marcy says
I sent this one to my husband. I’m inspired to make one for our house but only if I can find enough photographic evidence – we’re a little further along than you in toning down the awesomeness.
So jealous of your frame collection – although you just moved so you might not be loving all your possessions at the moment.
Tirsa says
5 inches of sink depth! Wow. Your tiny master bathroom mirror made me giggle. We inherited the opposite- a wall of floor to ceiling mirror and a huge medicine cabinet with very high mirrors in our master bath. Two years later, it’s all still there until we save enough $$ to renovate it. I’m happy to share some mirror with you Just bring your own cutter. Ha, ha, ha
Sarabeth says
All of those floors! Crazy when they are right up next to each other. We have black and orange tile in varying width stripes in our entry way and kitchen that I refuse to take pictures of! {Apparently our loft was designed at Halloween} I always feel the need to apologize for their ugly state when new people come over!
Cara says
I thought it was the shell sinks with the wallpapers a close second, but then I saw the kitchen sink was only 5″ and that blew everything else out of the water. I could NOT live with that… I can not even tell you how high on my priority list that would be.
Kelsey says
The nerdy nerd in me LOVES your infographics (keep ’em coming, please!) but this one went to a whole new level with the Nicki Minaj photobomb. Well played, John. Well played.
p.s. Who puts that mirror in a master bathroom?
Ellen Tillery says
Have you ever felt the urge to just run screaming from the building? :) That wallpaper…there’s just so much of it and it’s so ugly and then there’s the fact that every inch of trim is painted to match. The birds, though, they crack me up. Who doesn’t love a flock of white ceramic birds, each under their own cloche?
Patti says
John, my man, your numbers fetish is on the verge of OCD! But I love it :-) Any tips on painting in this humidity?
YoungHouseLove says
If its too humid inside I’d wait a little since paint stays really tacky if its too hot. We have central air so while its super humid outside the house seems ok inside and our paint is drying between coats so we’re grateful!

Love this. Seriously so awesome and fun.
Leah says
I just finished one of my summer courses; a stats class! So I’m with ya, John!
Also, I laughed out loud once I read the sea shell sink thing… I’m sorry, but ew!!
Michelle says
Are you concerned about deer ticks? We live in a similar setting, and every spring (right about the time that our 8 year old comes in with the first tick of the season) I wonder if I should spread something in the yard to kill them. But, then, I worry about killing all the GOOD bugs I try to attract. Have you given thought to that?
YoungHouseLove says
Both of our last houses had deer nearby and we lived in wooded deer-filled areas as kids, so we’re used to it I guess. We do daily tick checks before baths/showers every evening and Burger has a Lyme disease vaccine which works well for us. Hope it helps!

128 picture frames?? I feel you. I’ve lived in my new house five years, and all the artwork is STILL not hung. Less walls, waaay more windows than previous home…
So, I gotta ask – do you use metal picture hooks for most of them, and nail them up & deal with all those holes later, or do you like those 3M stick them up no hole picture hooks??
YoungHouseLove says
We usually use small nails and occasionally use 3M. Before we moved out of each house we spackled the holes and touched up the paint. I dreaded it but it only took a few hours once the furniture was cleared and we were all packed up.

Anne says
FIVE seashell shaped sinks!?! That seems like 5 too many to me.
Timmi says
At our last house it was wallpaper galore as well. Unfortunately we were unable to do a thing about it. EVERY SINGLE ROOM HAD IT! They had the crazy matching light covers, and get this the curtains matched the wallpaper. Where do you get curtains the exact print as your wallpaper? Thank goodness we were able to buy our current home that just has bad paint jobs and nasty carpet all that can easily be fixed
Amanda B says
The matching wallpaper and drapes must have been LEGIT when they were in style and probably terribly expensive! So funny to see how tastes change…it makes me wonder if generations down the line will gripe about all of our design choices too.
Amy says
We had matching curtains and wallpaper in our guest room when we moved in too! It was toile and my husband HATED it. Unfortunately the wallpaper was glued directly to the plaster and couldn’t be removed without damaging the wall beyond repair, so we just painted over it.
Jerrika says
Sea Shell Shaped Sinks is quite the tongue twister!
Mandy Grimes says
I find it hilarious that I was in a meeting at work and noticed it is 11:10 and wished it would end so I could read today’s Young House Love post…. yeah….
Also I had no idea you had 5 shell sinks! ahhh!
Kate W. says
LOVE the idea of the “Forum Foursome”! I always forget that you guys have the new forum feature and I love seeing what people are discussing/DIY-ing. Plus it gives me more things to explore on the internet on Friday when I don’t want to work anymore…
Jules says
Love the new little snip-its on the Friday post. Great idea!
Casey @ Waffling says
Since you just took down the old mirror in the downstairs bathroom, why not put it in the master? I dont know why you made replacing THAT mirror a priority when you have none in the Master!
Silly Petersiks…
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve got a full sized mirror right around the corner in the vanity area, so fortunately we don’t have to rely on this little guy!

Wonder why the phrase “Fly! Be Free!” screamed in my head at the end of this post. Hmm..
By the way, I hear that in my head as a 1970’s Mork & Mindy reference for you youngsters. http://www.rainyriverrecord.com/node/4528
katherine townsend says
A deer followed you into the garage??? They’re not quite that tame over in my ‘hood.
Jessica says
Only five inches of sink?! HOW do you live like that?!
MJB says
A bird in the cloche is worth…
one happy wife?
Kristin says
Honestly, it was the deer in the garage. Seriously?!
Justine Y says
Okay, what is with the shallow sinks?! We have a 5″ deep one too! Just bought this house in March but we can’t wait to get a new sink. I’m jonesing for a deep stainless steel apron front. :)
Olive says
My favorite is the deer in the garage! Really?? Right into the garage?! What did you guys do? Just left him alone and let him wander back out? Cute.
What is the text in that black print in the white frame coming off 92%?
YoungHouseLove says
Yeah, it kinda poked its head in a looked around. But I guess it wasn’t interesting enough so she just left on her own after a minute or two.
-John
Petra says
Ah how great is this post! Love the sinks ;-)
But I would really keep the wallpaper in the master bath (maybe just on one wall over the tub or somewhere else?). I love the colors of it and it would be great to accessorise the rest of the room entirely with clean white things. Including a huge mirror with a wide white frame.
Candice says
I immediately thought of the German tv ad:
