It’s Friday! Let’s get mathy up in here. By now you know I’m a card carrying facts & figures nerd (here’s Exhibit A and Exhibit B) so when Sherry and I started to notice some unique stats about our new house my throat basically erupted with “LEMMEDOSOMEINFOGRAPHICSPLEEEEEASE.”
Whether she actually was keen on the idea or was just worried that disagreeing would turn me into some beastly werewolf-statistician, this post was born. We always end up loving random time capsule posts like this the most in hindsight (it’s fun to look back at things we probably would have forgotten otherwise, like this, this, this, this, and this). So in the name of some headed-into-the-weekend fun (because, you guessed it, we’re busy painting something) here are the infographicized facts about life in our new house:
What fact struck you the most? Was it Sherry’s creepy birds-under-glass problem? How do they breathe!?
Jennifer I. says
128 frames?! I think I have 3 pieces of art hanging in my house right now. I need to get busy! 2 years ago it got painted and it just looks so pretty that nail holes SCARE ME.
Stacey says
I cracked up when I saw the 5 sea shell sinks and then Nicki Minaj “Let’s go to the beach!”
Leslie says
I can’t wait for ya’ll to get started on that kitchen!!
Rebecca says
5″ sink depth? What? That would make me nuts!
Kristy Dougherty says
OMG, I just have to laugh at the seashell sinks!!! My husband and I purchased a foreclosure earlier in the year that gifted us with 4 seashell sinks of our own. They sure are fun to talk about when giving friends the house tour.
I just ask, “WHY did anyone EVER think a sink shaped like a shell was a good idea?”
Good luck with your seashell collection, we find a lot of humor in ours!
Betsy says
I loved this post. I think the seashell sinks are my favorite though.
dianne says
OK, I know you asked which fact stuck out the most, but I just can’t get over that adorable pic of Clara and Burger! You have such a beautiful family. I look forward to reading your blog every day and can’t wait to see what amazing things you do with your home. PS. My husband probably thinks we are real life friends since I am constantly telling him what Sherry and John are doing to their home that we should do to ours too!

Aw thanks Dianne!

At first I thought the three floors were cropped and pasted together, then I realized that they all converge in that corner and my eyes burned for a second.
Mostly though, I’m awe-struck by the crazy amount of deer you seem to encounter on the daily (Maybe you should name this house “House Baratheon?”). How fun!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Love me some GoT!

Stephanie Haworth says
I think the 5 seashell shaped sinks are the strangest. And random Nicki Minaj was the best, ha!

I love the new Friday addition! Very fun! (Especially because I don’t want to go back to work yet…)
Have you all heard of the Scout Guide? (http://thescoutguide.com) It’s a fun city-based magazine/look book that was started in Charlottesville, but now there are Scout Guides for tons of cities–including Richmond. You guys should check them out if you have not heard of them. I am good family friends with one of the original editors as well as the Richmond editor, and I’d love to see if you guys could do something together. I think you would compliment each other nicely.
If you want more info, just email me. (I know you have a lot on your plate right now, but I thought I’d pass along the idea!)
Happy Friday!

Sounds like fun!

I think what struck me the most was the 5″ depth in the kitchen sink. Seriously?!?! Whatever engineer came up with that design never washed dishes by hand in their life! It’s like bras, you know a woman never would have come up with that design! The second thing was the deer following John into the garage. I’m wondering if maybe the previous owners fed the deer and maybe this one thought John was going to get it a snack?
YoungHouseLove says
The craziest thing is this house was vacant for a year before we bought it so they probably think it’s their house. Haha!

5 sea shell sinks?! I didn’t even know those existed and you have five of them. What are your plans for those? Will you be replacing them–I kind of love the idea of keeping one of them around for posterity’s sake.
YoungHouseLove says
I think eventually they’ll all be donated, but not for a while.

totally loved the deer following John INTO THE GARAGE!!!! Awesome! They are like pets around there! lol
Kara says
Oh my gosh, some of these! Five inches of sink depth? Eight of master bath mirror? What the what?
This is a cute post.
Lisa says
Oh wow! Love this post! And I just have to say that I have been thoroughly entertained by posts written by both of you Petersik’s, or some reason, ever more so in the past 2 weeks. Maybe that’s because you’re writin wittier than ever or it could be because I am no longer pregnant and grouchy. Lol!
I love learning the new things about your house that make me say, “Whoa!!! You guys really did get a steal of a house!” Because there are some issues that I couldn’t deal with. 5 sea shell shaped sinks?!??!?!!! Lord, those should be outlawed! And nothing irks me more than a shallow sink. It’s so unpractical. Love your birds in glass though! My 97 year old grandfather always asks for Pheasant Under Glass at special meals. We always just humoresque him. Finally at his 96th birthday, my mom made actual pheasant and served it under glass. He was ecstatic! Lovin’ your blog and your house and the progress… And the nerdy statistics! Have a great weekend!
Olive says
What is the text in that black print in the white frame coming off 92%?
YoungHouseLove says
It’s a happy home print from Etsy. Anyone remember the vendor?

I now feel the need to count how many frames are on the wall, and find what percentage of my total is still hiding in closets waiting to get hung three years later.
I have to say the five inch sink seems the hardest to work with for any extended time.
Lauren says
That. Mirror. SO funny! Also, can’t wait to see you do the deck, I have lots of deck needing done here. :p
Sherri J. says
21 windows to be painted? That seems like a lot.
Krysta says
That is a lot of sea shell shaped sinks!
danielle says
i love the photo of clara and burger on the deck and the deer who followed john into the garage. love this post, very clever. and i feel you on the 5″ of sink depth. hard to stay dry while you do the dishes… but in my case, i’m too in love with my 1920’s sink to change it!
Lauren says
Who decided that mirror was sufficient?
Also, those deer are getting ballsy! No fear!
Carrie says
Oh my that 8″ bathroom mirror surprised me the most, but you got me to laugh out loud that the deer followed John into the garage. If the deer decides to come inside or sleep on your deck, I think you have another pet!
Uyen says
Five inches of sink depth??! That would drive me nuts! :(

I’m not sure if I’m the first person to post this or not (sorry, didn’t read all the comments)…BUT you guys got an awesome shout-out on Emily Henderson’s blog today!!! YEAH! Between your new house, Chris & Julia’s new house and Emily looking for one, I’m very much looking forward to (and can’t wait to see) what ya’ll do in your new abodes!

It was very difficult to contain my laughter at the beach girl. But yes, I never understood having that much, um… variety in flooring. Wallpaper is a lot easier to take care of, but flooring, well that gets expensive.
Lisa in Seattle says
Most alarming: the 5″ sink. I’ve seen deeper sinks in RVs. Most charming: the deer following you into the garage! What did she want??? I picture her all “Look, pal, I’m just saying that those *other* people used to give me a Twinkie whenever I came in here. That’s all I know.”
YoungHouseLove says
She was in love with John. She wanted a date I think.

This infographic is EPIC! I smiled/laughed/jaw-dropped my way through it. Hilarious! John – I love your nerdy math side! Sherry should let you have at it on the blog more often if this is the result!
Amanda B says
Looking at the things you DO have, specifically the 21 windows to paint brought something to my attention about our house…NONE of our windows have trim! Odd that I never really noticed what was “off” about them till now.
Janelle @ Two Cups of Happy says
It makes me feel a little less frustrated by my counter full of dishes to see your sink. We have no counter space in our rental, so a few dishes looks like we haven’t done them in weeks! Haha. Dishes will be the death of me…. I’m a little dramatic about my lack of dishwasher.
Maureen says
I feel your pain on the sea shell sinks. Our past and our current rental have them. Hard to clean. Er, I hope you don’t love them. ;-)
Gabby @ Cookie Cutter Unique says
A 5″ deep sink? I would be replacing that thing with the quickness. The little mini-mirror in your master bath made me lol too!
Kristen says
FIVE INCHES OF SINK DEPTH?!?! How do you LIVE?!
Amanda says
All I have to say is that picture of Clara and Burger on the deck is one of the cutest I have ever seen of those two! Maybe that could end up in one of your white frames waiting to be hung. :)
Val says
Love this post-style! The graphics totally speak for themselves and are completely fun and engaging! Friday-fun-links are also great… I totally open-in-new-tabbed them! I just love when you guys mix it up in a way that makes me stop and think “these guys are brilliant”.
Adrianne D says
I love your infographics John! And this one takes the cake (so far)!! Get down with your geek self! :)

You’re deck is bigger than my whole apartment! lol!

What a small sink! Are you on team ‘run the water the whole time’ or ‘fill the sink up and wash in sudsy water’? …or team dishwasher! :)

Team dishwasher!

It’s like trying to choose your favorite child, it can’t be done. This whole post cracked me up. I liked how you were totally playing the sympathy card with the 21 windows to be painted. AAK! Clara and Burger sunbathing definitely wins the cute prize.
Andrea says
I was kind of surprised by the 128 frames, but that actually makes sense for you guys. That pic of Clara on the deck is adorable, by the way.
Diane says
Happy Burger and Clara on the deck struck me most and made me smile.
The five inch deep sink made me wince. What were they thinking???
Jen says
The bathroom mirror stuck with me, but I love the deck picture!
Margie says
I don’t know which cracked me up more. That you own 128 frames. That you counted. Or that you subdivided by color.
Keaton says
Loved the post. Couldn’t see any of the pics in Bloglovin’. Bummed.
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry! We’ve heard that a few times. Boo! Sounds like it worked on Feedly. No idea why Bloglovin is blocking John’s infographics.

Did you guys leave a time capsule in House #2?? If so, where did you leave it? I think that’s such a fun idea!

Yup, we hid one somewhere that’s nice and hard to find (if we told you, we’d have to kill you).

Hallelujah!! It’s taken me about 4 months of reading a couple pages a day but I’ve finally seen you’re entire blog!
Love you guys, the blog and the book.
Keep up the awesome work and thanks for all the tips and tricks :)

One seashell sink might be bearable…but FIVE! Bless you!!!! I am so excited to watch you guys on this journey. I only started following this blog about a year ago, so it’s so wonderful be able to be along for the ride as you make this new house as spectacular as your two previous. It’s already looking SO great in comparison with even a few weeks ago!
Erin says
5″ of sink depth… I am SO SORRY. At least I know you guys will be able to fix it.
Marcia says
21 double-hung-sash 6 over 9 windows with muntins? Aaarrrrgggh! Good thing you kids are young and energetic!
Sarah says
Lol. Love this post. The 3 floor types downstairs, 8″ of Master bath mirror and 5″ of sink depth would be enough to drive me batty! I’d seriously go nuts with such little room to work with in the sink while doing dishes and the OCD in me would not fair well with the floors.
