We did it! We can put three big ol’ check marks next to “paint the walls” and “paint the closet” and “paint the ceiling” in Clara’s room. It was definitely a bit of a painting marathon, but how sweet is the soft pink up there on the ceiling? It’s Pink Cadillac by Benjamin Moore in their eggshell finish. In some of these photos it’s pretty subtle, but in person it’s soft-but-noticeable – so while it’s not the entire room’s focal point, it’s a fun layered detail in the room. We thought clean white walls would complement the fun ceiling color without fighting too much with all of the color and pattern in things like the rug/pillows/curtains, so we went with BM Simply White in eggshell, which is also what we use for trim and doors in a glossier finish. Here are some other popular whites for walls and trim.
We also used some leftover ceiling paint in the closet, just to add something in there too. Someday I want to add a built-in bench in there and I even think about doing something interesting to the slanted ceiling (little cedar roofing shakes could bring out that “indoor playhouse” vibe – and maybe even some playful wallpaper on the back wall could be fun).
Oh and you’ll notice that the rug and the curtains from the living room have migrated up here. Clara’s pink rug was shedding like a maniac (the new hardwoods made the giant pink tumbleweeds especially noticeable) and Clara loves playing on this blue rug (she pretends the light blue parts are the ocean for her toys/dolls) so we rolled it out up here to see how we liked it. When we plopped everything down after moving we figured a bunch of things would find their way around the house, so it’s fun to see things making the rounds, and now this woven rug is in the living room – although the jury’s still out on whether we like it there for the long haul.
But let’s rewind to the room all prepped (we moved everything into the center and covered it with a few plastic dropcloths). Remember those old stripey walls from spraying the doors before we installed the hardwood floors? Well, we decided we didn’t want that primer/paint “flashing” (meaning that it could show through the paint if we didn’t prime) so we took a minute to prime just the areas that we worried about that happening.
Here’s that area all primed along with the ceiling painted (we painted the ceiling first, then moved on to priming just select areas of the walls where we worried about bleed or flashing).
Then we broke out the white paint for the walls. I grabbed this shot so you can see the difference between the yellowed old wall paint, the cooler toned primer, and the Simply White wall color.
Of course we’re still missing a bunch of things on the wall, like something I’m halfway through sewing for over Clara’s bed (COUGHcanopyCOUGH) so I can’t wait to get that done and hung – along with some other art and eventually a light fixture that we’d love to add too. But it’s already a huge improvement not to have the old yellowed walls and to finally be rid of those stripes from spraying the doors! And it’s certainly a far cry from the room full of blue trim that we started with:
We’ve also been trying to work on our photography skillz (picture us both laughing and blushing as we say that since we have such a long way to go) but we shot all of these after photos in manual for the first time! They’re definitely not perfect, but we’re slowly getting the hang of it… I think.
Clara is in love with her pink ceiling. When she came in and saw it she said “now when I’m sleeping I can look at the pink and the pink can look at me.”
I love that it’s a balance of crazy and calm in here, thanks to the fun mix of patterns (in the pillows, curtains, and the rug) combined with the white furniture and the white walls to sort of temper things so the room isn’t too wacky.
Here’s a shot from the closet, looking back at the other side of the room. That wall above the crib definitely needs some art, although Clara seems close to being done with her crib so we might just wait until she’s outta there to move it out of the room and then decide what will live on that wall, which will definitely inform the art above it.
Ooh look, I focused on the book and blurred the alligator. I feel like I should make myself a construction crown that says “Photoshoot Skillz In Da House” … and then promptly crumble it up after checking out my other favorite blogs, which all have infinitely better photos.
This cute kid makes any picture better though, so big ups to my girl for making this shot.
Oh and if you look closely you’ll see that we didn’t quite get into all the cracks where the wall meets the ceiling since we’re planning to add some crown molding – hopefully pretty soon!
What are you guys painting? Any clean walls + playful ceilings going on?

My daughter, who is 3 weeks older than Clara, had pink Cadillac on the walls of her nursery. It was the perfect soft pink. I was sad to cover it in blue when her brother came along. Thanks for the happy memory.

If your camera has a button that looks like a flower, that’s a micro button. It allows your camera to focus in on an object (as long as your upclose to it) and blur the background. They call it the micro button.
That is, if you plan on showing us any more snazy pictures of your place with the blur effect then you’ll be looking all professional (btw I think your photos are really good anyway!)

I love how playful and cheerful it all looks pulled together! The pink ceiling is a genius way to add that subtle pop of colour. I’m actually one who adores white walls in any room because it allows for an instant mood/decorating overhaul with a simple change of a pillow, or throw. Great choices for one sweet little girl! :0)

Wow, I really love it! It feels like the kind of room you could play, read, sleep and hangout for hours. I especially love the white walls. I keep noticing white walls and craving them. Do you think there is a trend towards white walls these days?
YoungHouseLove says
I feel like they’re sort of a timeless trend- like ten years ago a ton of designers were doing white walls and they’re still doing them and in twenty years they’ll still do them. I love the idea of mixing things up too much for an all white house (although I’ve seen some very lovely ones) so I think it’s nice to do a room or two that’s white and mix in other tones (like our dark bedroom and our soft sand foyer and our plans for a light blue ceiling in the living room).

WAIT! I thought you used Decorator White, not Simply White for the trim. You’re confusing me!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Sorry for the confusion! In every house paint reads differently, so we liked how Simply White read here (it looked more pure and white) meanwhile in our last two houses Decorators White was the one that read more white/pure in that lighting!

My husband and I bought two giant (9×12) rugs to cozy up our wood floors. After 3 or 4 months, I still vacuum or sweep or pick up fuzz daily. I think it’s slowing down, but gosh, those “tumbleweeds” make our house feel messy!

May I ask some questions about your paint decisions?
1. How “perfect” are your walls & ceiling? Did the eggshell finish emphasize anything less then perfect?
2. Why did you choose eggshell finish for ceiling instead of flat?
3. Did you prime the ceiling–or just paint over existing paint?
Many thanks, Peg
YoungHouseLove says
1. They’re pretty smooth – just a few nail holes we spackled but we sanded so they weren’t obvious
2. We wanted to use it for the closet too, so eggshell is still matte enough for a ceiling but also works for a kid’s closet (more wipe-able/durable than flat)
3. We didn’t prime the ceiling, just painted right over the previous color.

I’ve been looking at a lot of pictures with painted ceilings and white walls and this just clinches it for me. I love it and might have to point it out to my better half as a hint for our bedroom. Although, I don’t think he’d be on board with pink. sigh.

I am in the middle of doing my 4-year-old daughter’s room. She really wanted pink walls and I don’t, but I do want to do a pale pink ceiling also. I went with Clara’s line of thinking telling her that a ceiling is better than walls because she could stare up at the ceiling when she was on bed:) I don’t think she’s sold yet.

I used to work for Nordstrom, and their Holiday trim has included a massive, thickly piled red carpet for some hard aisles, and for the first season it was used it produced the same ‘tumbleweeds’. It definitely was not noticeable the next season (so for a 30 day season = 30 vacuumings). Good luck!
That being said, I think the blue rug in there is AMAZING and I would have loved it as a kid.

It’s 13.5 x 12.5? in there – definitely a little bigger than her last room, and that deep closet sealed the deal (she picked this one as her room thanks to that closet).

We’re in the process of designing the nursery for our first baby (due Feb. 8th!) and I was wondering if you could give me some insight into rug size. I notice that the rug in Clara’s room is almost the size of the full room. Was this intentional? Is this your ideal? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
John actually loves that (in a room where Clara plays and jumps off things and rolls out of the daybed it’s nice to know she’s landing on something plush) but it was mostly just an accident since we didn’t initially buy this rug for this space. There’s about a foot of space on all sides of the rug for the hardwoods to peek out, give or take. If I could wiggle my nose and shrink the rug just a smidge, I would (I think I like 18-24″ around a rug on all sides if we’re talking about dream scenarios – although in kids rooms sometimes something closer to wall-to-wall carpeting is the most functional).

I like the changes in Clara’s room. However, I think this post makes it really clear why some folks were so fired up about Clara’s “big girl room” in the previous house. You’ve really not kept anything from that room in this one with the exception of the daybed. All of the items that were “hand chosen” either by Clara or by you for the old room are just gone. I’ve got a three year old myself, and it’s hard for me to believe that if she loved the old room so much that she/you would be OK with not including any of those element in the new room. Just makes me feel like the whole “big girl room” exercise in the old house wasn’t real and I feel sorta sad/misled (which is silly because as you say it’s just home decor!). I love your blog and think you guys are awesome parents, but this one just really rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.
YoungHouseLove says
In our last house she had a nursery and a playroom, both of which she loved – and here she gets one room. So her crib & dresser from her nursery are in there along with the daybed, table & chairs, pouf, toy baskets, and pillows from her playroom. It’s really just like two rooms got smashed together and half the items from one room stuck along with half of the other. We’re bummed about the shedding pink rug too (argh, it’s non-returnable & not functional at all right now) so we just tried to course correct by using something we already had that Clara likes to play “ocean” on. The master bedroom and living room in our last house went through 2 rugs & 2 sets of curtains, as did the den and bedroom in our 1st house – so things just tend to evolve that way for us sometimes!

Isn’t it common for wool rugs to shed for several months?
And I had the exact same feelings as Kay RE the room. :/ I felt like it was really cool and a big deal that she picked stuff, but…apparently that was only for a couple months. meh.
Love those curtains, though. None on ebay, I have looked often!
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve had the rug for 9 months so it’s a lot longer than we’ve ever experienced with other rugs for that “heavy shedding” period (picture golf ball sized clumps floating around, and every time we vacuum it, the canister fills with pink fluff). I think it seems to vary by maker/weave/density/etc.

people have to remember she’s only three years old and will have a new favourite every day. i went through many favourite colours sometimes they would change just because a boy i liked had a different favourite colour. still at 25 my favorite colours and favourite things change daily.
i find it hard to believe that she would be sad about curtains changing. i’m sure she has much more exciting things going on her life than to be upset over a curtain change.
plus lets remember they already had bought this house when they did claras “big girl room” i’m sure they had intention to keep all of the same elements but also to make it up that way in order to sell it as a great family home.
some things just don’t work in new spaces or you realize something would look better if a different colour, shape or size.
sorry for this giant comment but sometimes i feel that people forget you guys are human and can change your mind and that changing a curtain pattern will not put clara into therapy.
Jennah says
lol. I don’t think it will send her to therapy. I just thought it was a really cool idea to involve her in the process, and really cool to see what a cute room came out of that…and then sad to see it all (mostly) scrapped. Totally agree about new spaces and stuff working differently, so I get the change. We are all way more emotionally attached to your home decor decisions than we should be.
That big ol’ rug in there makes me kinda twitchy, though. And I know you super care about my opinions, so I’m sharing ;)
Amy says
Well J&S did own house #3 as they were doing Clara’s big girl room so they knew all the choices would be temporary…
Kay says
Amy, I think that’s kinda the point. They knew that Clara was never going to really occupy that room but it was still furnished as if it was going to be her room. I realize they wanted/needed to stage it for the sale, but they could have staged it for selling without ever presenting it as a “project” or as “Clara’s room” which feels rather disingenuous since they had no intent of her ever really occupying that room for more than a short time. BUT, ultimately, it was a business decision made by John and Sherry, and it’s their business and they can do as they want. But I’ll admit that I think they’ve just exacerbated the situation with responses like the one to my original comment that seem to continue the trend of disingenuousness and feel a little condescending. The internet is smart, folks know the timing of the purchase of the new house and the timing of the “big girl room”. It’s silly to pretend otherwise and makes it seem like you’re talking down to your readership. Moving on with my day, because as I said, it’s only home decor!
YoungHouseLove says
We never mean to sound condescending or disingenuous, Kay, so I’m sorry if any response ever came off that way. I think we too are frustrated by any confusion surrounding Clara’s room so we’re just attempting to explain the thought process that led to finishing that room in the old house for her (prepare for the longest comment ever).
Yes, it’s true we decorated that room in January knowing we were moving in the summer. And yes, part of our motivation was to have the room finished when it was time to sell (which we openly acknowledged here). But the idea that “we knew Clara was never going to really occupy that room” is false and I’m sorry if it came across that way. We undertook that project in January under the assumption (and almost panic) that she would be graduating to a bed at any moment. Many of her classmates had been doing so at that time, and we assumed Clara would follow suit. We thought pairing the transition to a new bed with a new room made sense for her since her bed didn’t fit as well in her nursery. So the playroom was decorated under the assumption that she’d sleep in there well before our move and then we’d move everything that we put in there to the new house and find a place for it. We’re just as surprised as anyone that Clara’s still a crib sleeper, and admittedly bummed that she never got to sleep in there – but we’re thankful the room got several months of use as a playroom.
We also tried to be mindful of the new house when picking pieces for that room, and purposefully didn’t go overboard with built-ins or wallpaper because we wanted to decorate with pieces that we could use again. We moved with every intention of using the pink rug, curtains, and dresser again, but for reasons we couldn’t predict they didn’t work out as well here (but if we never intended to use them in our new house, we wouldn’t have gone through the trouble of moving them). Things from other rooms came to this house and didn’t work either, so it’s not like Clara’s room is the only room that hasn’t been cloned piece-for-piece. Most of that has to do with function in a new floor plan, but I think there’s also a natural urge to do things differently in a new house. And all three of us are enjoying the process of figuring this place out!
-John

Beautiful!
We just bought a new house and I had BIG plans to paint my daughter’s room BM Edgecomb Gray and her ceilings BM Jamaican Aqua with Valspar’s gold paint glitter mixed into it. When I got to the house ready to get my paint on, I realized that the ceilings were vaulted with the highest point being around 18 feet. How did I miss that!? Vaulted ceilings are hard to paint and I was short on time, so she got a (glittery) accent wall instead. Do I get points for planning? Haha!

I hope you don’t get rid of the rug in her room, I bet if you got it professionally cleaned it might help? Im not sure haha.
anyway, love the progress!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Katie! Some other folks have recommended some ideas for getting it to stop shedding so I’m going to look into those and keep you posted! As for the blue, she picked that rug to come in here while we deal with Sheddy McShedderson (since she loves playing ocean on it) so I think a more accurate description of Clara is that she likes pink and red but not all of her toys/favorite objects are only those colors. We did add the pink ceiling and give her a pink closet, and her chairs and pillows are pink/red too, so I think it’s still in there enough to make it her favorite spot.

Hello you guys, I follow/read your blog since you got your second house, and I`m always excited to see what you did in each room. Love what you Clara`s room (Clara is also my niece`s name) with the white/blue/pink elements, I think is a better color combo choice to a girl`s room than to do only pink.
I would have turned the laundry next to her room into a bathroom for her. I don`t understand the appeal of a laundry room upstairs… It could be related to the cold weather? I live in a tropical country, laundry here is something we do mostly outside and that`s a lot use of water, and water spills… I just don`t get it how you can manage it upstairs with your hardwood floors… hahahaha sorry I didn`t mean to meddle. xo Tatiana
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so funny Tatiana! Must be a regional thing! Here a laundry room on the second floor with all the bedrooms is considered to be a really nice upgrade/convenience so you don’t have to carry everything up and down the stairs. We’re used to having everything on the same floor from living in ranch houses for 7 years, so I must admit that we’ve loved having that conveniently placed laundry room for the past few months that we’ve been here! There’s also a bathroom right across the hall from Clara’s room, so she has nice easy access to that.

I’m super interested to see how you guys do the crown with the pitched ceilings! I’m not sure why, my house doesn’t even have pitched ceilings. Wobbly and uneven, yes, but no pitch.
My bedroom is a mild ivory color and the ceiling is a blue gray. I love the combo but don’t love it with my white trim… it’s been two years and I still can’t decide if I should repaint that room for the 4th time in 5 years. The light in there makes it difficult. My mom thinks I should do white but as much as I love white in other people’s houses it feels sterile in mine.
But oh! The living room is Glidden’s warm stone, which is my very favorite neutral color ever in the world. :) I have thick, thick white crown in there and the ceiling is Glidden’s Bronzed Ivy. Very similar to ORB but with just a hint of green. It’s the most relaxing color combination in the world and feels very Manhattan meets Nantucket. I love my living room so much! I think this room is taking on a cool “Americana” vibe but maybe that wasn’t the intention haha. It kind of has a red, white, and blue palette but with light pinks and teals mixed in so that it’s not as literal. Aw, thanks so much Jenn! Our living room windows are naked and afraid (ok, just naked, but that show cracks me up) but the other curtains could definitely end up in here (or in the dining room or kitchen of office or spare room -we have lots of naked rooms in need of curtains so I think once we do some more painting we’ll have a better idea of where they might land).

I bought two wool rugs about a year ago and they are still shedding like mad. Drives me insane! I love them both so much (from overstock) but they fill up my vacuum bags in no time and there is fuzz all over our new hardwoods ALL THE TIME! Maybe I should try the professional cleaning tip. Love the pink ceiling! I painted the ceilings in both my kids rooms “sea salt” by Sherwin Williams…it’s a pale blue. I’m one of the few people who can even tell they aren’t white, but I love it. I’ve considered painting faux white clouds on the ceilings too but I’m either being lazy or a scaredy cat :) Keep up the good work!

I keep hearing that Sea Salt is the best color. Sounds awesome!

I love Clara’s room. I particularly love that it’s a room that will grow with her (i.e. no theme). She’s so adorable and I love how she imagines the blue on the rug as water for her dolls. So sweet.

Love the pink ceiling! I painted my navy powder room ceiling pale pink. You will really love it once you put up the crown molding. It really makes the ceiling color pop!

It’s amazing how much bigger those windows look just by the way you hung the curtains. I need to remember to think outside the window box and expand things a bit.
Looks great!
