We finally hung stuff on the wall in the beanette’s room. Earth shattering right? Except it’s actually somewhat of a big deal considering we haven’t hung a single thing in the entire house except for a wreath on the back of the fireplace in the living room for Christmas. That’s right, for the last month we were card carrying picture hanging virgins in the new house. But now that we made about 34 holes (yes, I counted) in the walls of Clara’s room, our v-card is long gone. So we snapped some pics of the nursery now that it has a little more flava.
The only real change from Clara’s room in our last house so far is the soft pink wall color (it has great gray and purple undertones- more on that here). Otherwise, we have pretty much all of the same furnishings and accessories in there for now. You know, work with watcha got, blah blah blah. We think it’ll definitely evolve as she grows, but we loved her nursery in our first house (it was the only room that was a bit hard to walk away from when we sold it) so we’re cool with keeping things familiar for now and adding in some subtle tweaks as she grows. Anyway, here’s what it’s looking like in there now that we broke out the hammer and the level (34 times. did I mention we hung a ton of stuff in there? because we did):
Oh and see this mirror. We baby-proofed it.
Although the mattress will drop down more than a foot when Clara starts pulling up, we still wanted to make sure she couldn’t somehow climb the walls and pull that big green mirror down. So after hanging it on the wall with a nice heavy duty anchor, we went overboard and decided to drive two looong screws…
… through two holes on the bottom of the frame. Yes, we screwed that mirror right into the wall. See that little silver nail-head hidden among the ornate mirror frame in the foreground of the pic below (and the one that’s kinda blurred on the other side)? We used heavy duty anchors to hold them nice and firm. That thing ain’t going nowhere. And we even have the green paint that we used on the mirror to paint those screw heads so they’re totally invisible among all that scrollwork around the frame of the mirror.
In other baby-proofing news, we also added outlet covers to nearly the entire house (still need to run out for a few more to complete the job) and of course we mentioned how our curtains are baby-proofed a while back in this post when we made them (they’re held up with ring clips, so if Clara swings on them like a monkey the fabric will slip out but the rod and the ring hooks won’t come crashing down. Because that would be bad. Anyway, on with the nursery pics.
The closet is actually my favorite place in Clara’s room. It’s huge and I picture her in there relaxing on a beanbag and reading books when she’s a little older. So there you have the current state of the nursery. It’s funny to think that a little over a month ago it was completely babyless and looked like this:
And speaking of my favorite girl, here she is now enjoying her room. This is the expression she gave me when I asked if she liked her block.
And this is what she did when I said “Now give me fierce! Work it girl!” while channeling Tyra.
I think she understands more English than my sweet Italian grandma.
Psst- For more info on where we got something in Clara’s room, click here for the full rundown.

I love the fieeeeerce {::shakes pointer finger::} look!
Is that a drawing of the family as giraffes?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Liz,
Why yes it is. It’s from Grace Hester Designs. Clara’s favorite animal is the giraffe (exotic animal that is, dogs are of course her favorite domestic one).

Adorable. Such a great happy place for a bubba and that soft grey pink on the walls is gorgeous.
Okay so this question is slightly off topic but I love that fact you don’t use a ‘normal’ changing table but do you find having the changing pad next to the wall a pain or do you turn it around when it comes time to change her?
Strange question I know.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lisa,
We leave the pad as is (it’s actually secured to the dresser for safety reasons) and change her that way. We’re so used to it we change her that way on the floor when we stay with family too!

Hey Emily,
That’s from an outlet here in Richmond. Click the link at the bottom of the post for more info.

Okay, confession time. I wasn’t sure about Clara’s wall color when you first painted it. I wasn’t and I’m sorry I didn’t trust you guys more because WOW it’s perfect. I finally see how perfect it is with all of her stuff now in there. La-hovely.

Love how everything translated seamlessly with the new wall color! Any plans to paint the ceiling, a la Clara’s first room?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Rachel,
Yes I actually have big ceiling plans. Someday!

I adore Clara’s room! What a fun, fresh nursery – and the closet is fab!
Ashley says
Clara’s room is super cute, not too babyish. I tried to do the same thing with my daughter’s room. That way the room will “grow” with her. Oh and my daughter has a shirt in the same print as Clara’s pants…..and she wore it today! haha!
Jami @ Allergic to Mornings says
Love, love, love the pink! Awesome addition to what was already a gorgeous nursery! Clara is one lucky girl!
Marci says
Absolutely adorable! You guys are always an inspiration. I already painted my girls’ rooms but I think I may use the pink you used in Clara’s room for my playroom which needs to be re-done after a flood down there from a burst water heater a few weeks ago. Don’t worry though – we had a professional company come in and rip out all the wet floor and take all sorts of mold measurements etc to make sure it would continue to be a safe hangout for my little ones.
Erin B. Inspired says
How adorable! It’s such a great room.
But I have to know: where did you guys find that Chihuahua head plush on her book shelf? That is ah-mazing and so cute! I need one for my two Chihuahuas. :)

Hey Erin,
Scroll back for that info. Hope it helps!

I’m loving her room. I’ve only 20 days left before our little kidlet arrives (and we still need to paint and decorate the entire nursery!!).
I was wondering if you could give a close-up or more information as to how you hung the curtain as a makeshift closet door? We’ve been in our new house for almost a month as well, and had removed all the old sliding closet doors (they were gouging the hardwoods and really inefficient from a space standpoint) and had to remove bi-folds covering the laundry closet as our new machines were just an inch or so too big. I’d love to put curtains up in place of doors but have been trying to figure out the best way to hang them.
Oh! And speaking of hardwoods – how do you keep yours clean?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sonja,
If you follow the link at the bottom of the post you’ll see another post about her old nursery. Within that post is a link to how we made the curtains, which has shots of the closet curtain hanging process (and a description of what we used). As for our hardwoods, we use a little bit of watered down Mrs Meyer’s soap with an OMop (or a rag) and scrub every once in a while, but most of the time I just vacuum (and sometimes even use my hand vac to grab dust bunnies around the room’s perimeter. Hope it helps!

I love the new wall colour even more now that everything is back in place. It looks so fresh and pretty. Great choice! She’ll be tickled pink when she realizes one day that you two put her room together first, so she could enjoy a pretty, completed space. Awwww.

Looks great! I loved the green so much that I miss it a bit. But still, it looks great, sweet and cozy room that’s kid-like but also appealing to grown-ups. I don’t like kids rooms that don’t feel comfortable for the grown-ups too.
Susanna says
The nursery is nice and all but that Clara is gorgeous! Your blog better watch out because I think she’s a contender to steal home renovation thunder! (OMG and her outfit is just fab).
Melissa says
First of all I want to say that Clara’s room looks precious! (Again!!)
Secondly, I want to apologize in advance for the following, I really don’t want to sound like an annoying mommy know-it-all…I’ve encountered all too many of those over the years myself. ;-)
But (you knew there was a but, right?) – I’m concerned about Clara’s mattress still being so high. If she has enough upper-body strength to drag herself forward on the floor then it is possible for her to pull herself out of the bed. My last baby (my fourth) was only 4 months old when he pulled himself out of his bed – looong before he was pulling up, or even sitting up! – he fell to the floor. Woke to a thump and then his cry – scariest way to wake up ever!
It’s just better to be safe than sorry. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Melissa,
Clara actually isn’t dragging herself forward on the floor yet! But we definitely plan to drop her mattress any day now (perhaps today, now that you mention it). Trust us when we say that Clara is the most important thing ever to us. Her safety is paramount (hence drilling mirrors into walls, haha).

We moved into our house three months ago and have just barely started hanging things on the walls – I think when you know you are going to paint the wall before long it’s easy to put it off! Love Miss Clara’s room and her fierce attitude!

If anyone has a Sam’s Club membership, I found a cube that is a dead ringer for the one you have in Clara’s room as a foot stool/storage container for $20 last week. It is in our living room hiding my one year olds toys that don’t fit in our ottoman drawers.
Samantha says
Can you tell me where you got the white ceramic elephant and giraffe on the changing table?

Hey Samantha,
That was a gift from a family member (from Pottery Barn or Pottery Barn Outlet) about 9 months ago.

I want to come over and hang out in clara’s closet on a bean bag chair, reading books and eatin grapes.
I am still not digging the pink (sorry!) but I am not a pink fan and green is my favorite so it’s only natural that I prefered her first room. :) Is that rug different? It doesn’t look the same as my weak memory thinks it should and I am too lazy to go back and look.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Carrie,
Yup, same rug. Didn’t wanna go with something crazy and patterned for fear that it would compete with the curtains.

Aww her room looks FANtastic :) Quick question… I love the frame arrangements you guys incorporated in your old house and now in Clara’s new room. I’d like to do one on the wall bheind our living room sofa but we live in an apartment and aren’t sure if we want to paint (since we’d have to paint it back to white before we move out)…so my question is, do you think an all-white frame arrangement would look ok on plain white walls? Or should we use all-black frames? Or should we cave and paint the wall behind the sofa and THEN use white frames? any input is much appreciated!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kayla,
You’d probably appreciate a bit of contrast so you could paint the wall and use white frames or use wood, metal, or black ones with the white wall. Should look great either way!

I LOVE those white wall shelves. They are so much more modern and funky than the ones I have been seeing around here. Shopping for some for our house so I have been in the market. :) Really cute room!

I LOVE IT! You guys do such an amazing job at putting everything together and picking just the right colors!
Our new house has all FLAT paint in it, and while I love the color, it does not stand up to babies, toddlers, and water. But I’m such a chicken when it comes to deciding on paint colors.. how do you do it? I want something fun for my toddler girl AND baby boy’s rooms, but I’m too scared I’ll choose something overwhelming.
Got any tips?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jamie,
Yes! Check out the painting section of our Projects page (see that tab up under the header?). It has lots of tips for picking colors and painting things easily and quickly. Remember it’s just paint, which is cheap and easy to undo if you hate it. More than likely you’ll love it though! Especially if you use those test pots of paint to pick a color you’re confident you’ll love. Good luck!

Kara says
Love the ‘new’ room! And thanks, as always, for sharing all of your progress and plans (can’t wait to see what’s in store for the ceiling!).
Hopefully quick question – we are about 60% of the way through our own (gender-neutral… we’re waiting to find out) nursery decorating and are stumped on a light fixture. Right now our room has an old white ceiling fan/light but I’m itching to replace it. Any ideas for overhead light fixtures that can “grow” with the room and child?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kara,
We did a capiz chandelier that we love. Just check out local places (we went to a lighting outlet nearby) and consider everything that catches your eye. A fun colorful pendant light would be cool. Hope it helps!

Her room came out adorable. I love the addition of the mirror. (I’m not sure she had that one before?) Nice job.

I love Clara’s room! It’s a fun, yet relaxing space for her! I’d love to see a post with more details about how you organized her new closet space. It’s something that, as a new mom, I’ve become obsessed with! Our little man is starting to accumulate a collection of toys & books and I’m trying my best to keep things as organized as possible with creative storage in our small 2 bedroom townhome.
Oh, and I have to know where you got the adorable giraffe that’s in her crib. I love it! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey JoAnne,
That colorful giraffe in her crib was from Target back in April, so we’re not sure if they still have it or not.

Clara’s room is beautiful! I like that it’s pretty without being girly. Definitely the kind of room that can be easily and economically turned into a young girl’s room when she gets older.
Love it!

still diggin’ the chandy!!! I even went on a little light hunt of my own yesterday..no dice, but I will keep looking!! awesome room. Clara will have lots of great times in there.

Oh my goodness, her room is adorable! I love everything – the pink, the old decor in a new setting, the growing frame collage… everything! I can’t get over how cute that name canvas is from Numsi. I’m definitely going to check them out. And it was so neat to read (from going back in the comments and finding the link to the blog from Clara’s birth) about her namesake and how you literally created her middle name. So unique and fun! Big props to you, mom and dad!

First time poster here. Thanks for this great post! The Clara pics are too much. We have a little pumpkin the same age. Born May 13. Her name is Nora. I think she and Clara would be fast friends. You have given me so many great ideas for Nora’s next room (we are relocating in two weeks for hubby’s job, and looking to purchase our first home sometime in 2011)- thanks! Love your blog. Both of you are incredibly talented and incredibly funny. It’s a joy to read. Thanks again.
