We finally hung stuff on the wall in the beanette’s room. Earth shattering right? Except it’s actually somewhat of a big deal considering we haven’t hung a single thing in the entire house except for a wreath on the back of the fireplace in the living room for Christmas. That’s right, for the last month we were card carrying picture hanging virgins in the new house. But now that we made about 34 holes (yes, I counted) in the walls of Clara’s room, our v-card is long gone. So we snapped some pics of the nursery now that it has a little more flava.
The only real change from Clara’s room in our last house so far is the soft pink wall color (it has great gray and purple undertones- more on that here). Otherwise, we have pretty much all of the same furnishings and accessories in there for now. You know, work with watcha got, blah blah blah. We think it’ll definitely evolve as she grows, but we loved her nursery in our first house (it was the only room that was a bit hard to walk away from when we sold it) so we’re cool with keeping things familiar for now and adding in some subtle tweaks as she grows. Anyway, here’s what it’s looking like in there now that we broke out the hammer and the level (34 times. did I mention we hung a ton of stuff in there? because we did):
Oh and see this mirror. We baby-proofed it.
Although the mattress will drop down more than a foot when Clara starts pulling up, we still wanted to make sure she couldn’t somehow climb the walls and pull that big green mirror down. So after hanging it on the wall with a nice heavy duty anchor, we went overboard and decided to drive two looong screws…
… through two holes on the bottom of the frame. Yes, we screwed that mirror right into the wall. See that little silver nail-head hidden among the ornate mirror frame in the foreground of the pic below (and the one that’s kinda blurred on the other side)? We used heavy duty anchors to hold them nice and firm. That thing ain’t going nowhere. And we even have the green paint that we used on the mirror to paint those screw heads so they’re totally invisible among all that scrollwork around the frame of the mirror.
In other baby-proofing news, we also added outlet covers to nearly the entire house (still need to run out for a few more to complete the job) and of course we mentioned how our curtains are baby-proofed a while back in this post when we made them (they’re held up with ring clips, so if Clara swings on them like a monkey the fabric will slip out but the rod and the ring hooks won’t come crashing down. Because that would be bad. Anyway, on with the nursery pics.
The closet is actually my favorite place in Clara’s room. It’s huge and I picture her in there relaxing on a beanbag and reading books when she’s a little older. So there you have the current state of the nursery. It’s funny to think that a little over a month ago it was completely babyless and looked like this:
And speaking of my favorite girl, here she is now enjoying her room. This is the expression she gave me when I asked if she liked her block.
And this is what she did when I said “Now give me fierce! Work it girl!” while channeling Tyra.
I think she understands more English than my sweet Italian grandma.
Psst- For more info on where we got something in Clara’s room, click here for the full rundown.

Are you guys planning to paint the ceiling of her room again? Oh, I really loved that touch in her old room! Either way, I am actually digging the pink. It’s a nice touch, I think.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jennifer,
Yes, someday. We have big plans for it actually!

Clara’s bedroom is ADORABLE! I LOVE her closet as well! My question…how do you keep it so clean and organized in there? Where do you put clothes she has already outgrown? Or baby stuff she doesn’t use anymore, such as her travel swing? Does she have a jumperoo or exersaucer? I’ve never seen one of those in your house, so I am assuming no, but maybe you hide it well? Anyways, looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Heidi,
We have a small pink bag in the corner (you can’t see it) where we drop clothes that she outgrows. Then they go into large tupperware bins in the attic to wait around for the next baby in a few years. As for the travel swing, that’s also wrapped up and in the attic. We borrowed a jumperoo but have since returned it to the borowee, and we never had an exersaucer since Clara enjoy sitting on the floor and playing so much. As for generally keeping the closet organized, we only hang dresses and “fancy stuff” in there along with jackets. All onesies and sleepers and pants and shirts are in the dressers. Hope it helps!

I think the closet is my favorite change too. Does it make a huge difference to have a larger closet? Mentally, the closets in our 1940’s are the only “little” thing I can’t fall in love with. I’ve adjusted to every other tiny space, but the closets frustrate me to no end every time I open the doors! I was just picking out colors to paint the inside of our little room closet a la old young house love nursery. xo
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Felicity,
It really does make a huge difference! It’s my favorite spot in the room! We think it’s great that it came with such a large closet, because most 60’s houses didn’t. Jackpot!

Love the nursery in your old home as much as the nursery in your new home!
Just a little advice from a child care provider…move crib down asap! If she can sit up, it should be down. She could pull herself up and fall out in the blink of an eye. It can happen to even the BEST parents! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Tracy,
We’re lowing it today! Clara can only sit up when we place her in that position, but we don’t want to take any chances!

Yay! Great job. This is the first time asking a “are you going to do this” question and it feels a little intrusive to do so, but here goes — any thought to crown molding? I realized something looked different to me and then it was like BAM – crown molding!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Constance,
We definitely want to DIY some crown molding in Clara’s room down the line. It should make a big difference.

I’m a loyal blog reader . . . I just wanted to say that I am looking forward to see how you transition your home for a toddler and the storage and organization ideas that you come up with as she grows. I’ve had such a hard time balancing functionality with the utter chaos that a newly walking toddler can bring.
I love the new place, looks like a wonderful family home :)
Molly says
Hi Sherry! I love Clara’s room. Question: where did you find the furry cream throw? I’ve been looking for one; I’d preferably like to buy it online.
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Molly,
The furry cream item on the ottoman is a faux sheepskin from Ikea. Hope it helps.

Clara is so lucky to have such a gorgeous room! I love the frame arrangement; did you organize it so it looks kind of like a heart on purpose? If not, bonus! Everything looks great.
I love following the progress you’re making on your new house. Keep it coming!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey OMG-YHL,
The heart shape was totally accidental – it sort of grew organically into that shape. Maybe subconsciously? Good eye!

Handy Man, Crafty Woman says
Really cute! I like how you re-created the look from the old house; you really didn’t get much time to enjoy Clara’s room in your old house.
Stephanie says
Looks great!! Did you think about painting the inside of the closet the same as the walls because it is kind of open? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Stephanie,
Yeah, we definitely considered that but decided to leave it for now. But it may get painted in the future, the jury is still out at the moment.

Ally says
Very pretty! Are you planning on painting the ceiling in here? I think it would look so pretty with an aqua or pea green ceiling like in the old room plus crown molding.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Ally,
Yep, you can scroll back in the comments for more info on that from Sherry.

I love love love it! I want to do my Evelyn’s room so bad!! But we’re not quite there yet. The closet is my favorite too! Well, that and the collage on the wall, mine never look quite right lol. But that closet is awesome!! Mine was pretty good growing up but not quite that good lol. How does it feel having a room done? When I got my son’s room mostly finished it was the first room we made it that far in and it was such a good feeling. I spent so much time in there afterwards lol, just hanging out on their couch and looking around. There’s still some finishing touches to be made but it’s still nice.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Shannon,
It feels awesome! We still have a feeling the room will continue to evolve as Clara grows, but it’s great to finally have things back on the walls!

In case someone’s looking for a NOW option, there’s this elephant bank I saw at Urban Outfitters the other week:

It’s orange, but of course you could easily spray paint it any color you want. I immediately thought of YHL when I saw it.
Laura says
The room looks great. I love it just as much as the old nursery! Question… I may have missed this in one of your previous posts, but how did you secure the changing pad? What did you guys use?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Laura,
The changing pad is secured with a snap on the back of the dresser. You can see pics at the bottom of this post: https://www.younghouselove.com/2010/03/nursery-progress-makin-a-mobile/

Hi YHL! I just love this website. I was wondering if you could tell me where you purchased clara’s table with the two baskets and the lamp on top? Thanks so much! keep up the AWESOME work!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Julie,
That’s a side table from Target that just happened to work with two baskets from Linens N Things slipped into it. They didn’t come together but it was pretty amazing when they fit together like that!

love the room and i love the new color! just curious if you both are loving this new room even more than the other (with the new color)?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jordan,
Yup, we’re smitten. We just love our new house so much in general that even the empty rooms make us smile. And we really like the soft pink color we picked because it looks moody and purple and even gray depending on the time of day.

Love Clara’s new room!
Where do you store her cloth diapers?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Molly,
We keep her cloth diapers in her dresser, the middle drawer under the changing pad. Convenience is key, obviously – especially when you’ve got a wriggly, half-naked baby to keep track of!

Dayna says
Sherry,
Clara’s room is lovely! When my oldest son was a baby, we baby proofed things just like that. We screwed down tall plant tables in the living room and it was hysterical how they would not move. People would look in horror as he pulled himself up on their legs and they wouldn’t fall over!
Totally secured by daddy!
Also, where did you get the shelves? I love them!
Her room looks perfect!
YoungHouseLove says
Hi Dayna,
We actually made those shelves above her changing table / dresser. You can read more about that project here: https://www.younghouselove.com/2010/04/nursery-progress-feeling-shelf-ish/

Looks great! All of your pieces from the other room work really well with the soft pink colour on the walls.
Kristen@JLS says
The paint color in Clara’s old room was a refreshing & soothing shade, but I find the blue/green combo with the new pale pink to be my new favorite…sort of retro feeling! love it.
Corinne says
I love all your accessories and I loved her old room, but I gotta say everything looks so out of place against that new wall color. Don’t like it at all

Didn’t think I could love her room any more than I loved the one in your old house. This one is different, and so beautiful. Love ths subtle sophistication of the pink. Totally baby chic!

Now, I know you’ve said you want to use the pottery barn day bed for Clara’s toddler bed, but in the light of this link I saw today I’d urge you to reconsider and build Clara her very own Edwina the bed! http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/inspiration/holy-handmade-toddler-farmhouse-bed-batman-inspiration-137027
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Annabelvita,
Haha, that’s too funny! I’m sure Clara would love a bed like mommy and daddy. And Edwina is the perfect name. Although poor Edwina will never get to court Ed the Bed since he’s down the hall in our room all the time. So sad.

ps. love the pink with all her cute things. were you pleased to get the chance to do a girly bedroom after all?

We’re definitely having fun with it! We thought the green and the blue pops kept it from getting too girly, but we do love a hint of pink!

Ok, sorry if this is old info but you mentioned buying outlet covers. If you have the plug type (plastic ones that insert in the outlet) don’t use them! Spend a few extra dollars and buy the child proof outlet covers… the ones where you unscrew your existing plates and replace them with the childproof ones. The childproof ones have a sliding mechanism where you just slide the cover over to insert your plug and it slides back when you take your plug out. These are well worth it.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Crista,
We received a big pack if the basic plastic ones as a gift so we’re using those for now, but the upgraded versions do sound nice!

Wonderful! I love it, one question: in the floor plan this room would be Clara’s room or playroom / nursery?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Ofelia,
In the floor plan it’s labeled as the playroom but we switched them since it was about the same size as her old nursery so we thought things would fit better that way!

Clara’s room is so pretty! I miss having a nicely done nursery. I have a 2 1/2 year old who is so destructive alone in her room (quiet/bed time) that she now only has a bed and a bookshelf in her room and her closet doors are locked. :)
Ali says
Clara’s room turned out beautiful! Great job! I’m hoping and waiting till you tackle a DIY play kitchen set for Clara! I loved playing with my kitchen set as a child and my kids have too! IKEA has a great play kitchen set that I’ve seen other blogger’s personalize and paint to suit their kids rooms…its adorable!
You two are so extra careful with all that safety stuff! Makes me so thankful my 3 kids didn’t get hurt in our home since I didn’t go much further in baby proofing than the outlet covers! Oops! :)

That looks really lovely, just as nice (or even nicer?) than her first room.
I remember a while back you showed in one of your post some trick on how to position all the different picture frames on the wall, well balanced out, like on Clara’s walls. It was something with brown paper……. I want to do something similar and was looking for that particular post but can not find it. Do you remember and could you link me to it? Thanks!

Clara’s closet is better than mine, I’m jealous!!!
Jessicah says
Cute once again! I have to say, I’m kinda jealous–our Eleanor is only 3 weeks older than your Clara, and we had to drop the crib mattress 2 months ago because she was pulling herself up. And we also had to babyproof all outlets and stuff back then when she started crawling. Not to mention you got a good sleeper! How’d ya do it?!
Don’t get me wrong, Eleanor is AWESOME–but peaceful is not a word I’d use to describe her. :) I’m thinking I need to go back and read how you did the curtain thing, because she almost pulled the living room curtain rod down on herself the other day.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, we always joke that Clara’s a great sleeper and is generally very deliberate, calm, and gentle… but she’s so loud! The girl likes to shriek and scream for fun! Maybe Eleanor is a mover and a shaker but Clara’s a loud mouth! Too funny!

You guys are great. Beautiful room!
BrassyDel says
I just want to say thank you for the timely inspiration. Our second little one is due in less than three months now (where has the time gone?!) and his nursery used to be our guest room. Now it is sort of my storage/junk room. It’s also violently orange. I went crazy with bold color when we bought the house and that’s the one room that really didn’t work out how I expected! WAY too much orange. So the soon-to-be-nursery needs to be cleaned out, painted, set up, etc (and then filled with a wiggly newborn). It’s kind of daunting and I’ve been procrastinating, but I love what you’ve done with Clara’s space. So again, thanks! Now maybe I’ll get off the internet and work on that nursery…
Leslie C. says
I love how the pictures look like they are arranged in the shape of a heart! So sweet!

I have to say, I still am in love with her dresser. Once we move into a house, I think I might have to refinish one like that – if we someday have a baby (like we plan), it can be used as a dresser/changing table, but if we don’t/until we do it would also be great somewhere else.
Mandy of Kini Style says
