We finally hung stuff on the wall in the beanette’s room. Earth shattering right? Except it’s actually somewhat of a big deal considering we haven’t hung a single thing in the entire house except for a wreath on the back of the fireplace in the living room for Christmas. That’s right, for the last month we were card carrying picture hanging virgins in the new house. But now that we made about 34 holes (yes, I counted) in the walls of Clara’s room, our v-card is long gone. So we snapped some pics of the nursery now that it has a little more flava.
The only real change from Clara’s room in our last house so far is the soft pink wall color (it has great gray and purple undertones- more on that here). Otherwise, we have pretty much all of the same furnishings and accessories in there for now. You know, work with watcha got, blah blah blah. We think it’ll definitely evolve as she grows, but we loved her nursery in our first house (it was the only room that was a bit hard to walk away from when we sold it) so we’re cool with keeping things familiar for now and adding in some subtle tweaks as she grows. Anyway, here’s what it’s looking like in there now that we broke out the hammer and the level (34 times. did I mention we hung a ton of stuff in there? because we did):
Oh and see this mirror. We baby-proofed it.
Although the mattress will drop down more than a foot when Clara starts pulling up, we still wanted to make sure she couldn’t somehow climb the walls and pull that big green mirror down. So after hanging it on the wall with a nice heavy duty anchor, we went overboard and decided to drive two looong screws…
… through two holes on the bottom of the frame. Yes, we screwed that mirror right into the wall. See that little silver nail-head hidden among the ornate mirror frame in the foreground of the pic below (and the one that’s kinda blurred on the other side)? We used heavy duty anchors to hold them nice and firm. That thing ain’t going nowhere. And we even have the green paint that we used on the mirror to paint those screw heads so they’re totally invisible among all that scrollwork around the frame of the mirror.
In other baby-proofing news, we also added outlet covers to nearly the entire house (still need to run out for a few more to complete the job) and of course we mentioned how our curtains are baby-proofed a while back in this post when we made them (they’re held up with ring clips, so if Clara swings on them like a monkey the fabric will slip out but the rod and the ring hooks won’t come crashing down. Because that would be bad. Anyway, on with the nursery pics.
The closet is actually my favorite place in Clara’s room. It’s huge and I picture her in there relaxing on a beanbag and reading books when she’s a little older. So there you have the current state of the nursery. It’s funny to think that a little over a month ago it was completely babyless and looked like this:
And speaking of my favorite girl, here she is now enjoying her room. This is the expression she gave me when I asked if she liked her block.
And this is what she did when I said “Now give me fierce! Work it girl!” while channeling Tyra.
I think she understands more English than my sweet Italian grandma.
Psst- For more info on where we got something in Clara’s room, click here for the full rundown.

So wonderful! My husband and I just bought a house and I have a curtain question for you. We’d LOVE to put the high and wide curtains in our rooms but we have baseboard heaters. Which would most likely catch the curtains on fire, not a good plan.
Do you have any ideas for how to get a similar look without burning our house down?
YoungHouseLove says
We heard murmurings of firesafe/heatsafe curtains so maybe try googling around for them? Otherwise you can always make them hang around 6″ below the best of the window and use drapey fabric so they’re still nice and breezy. Hope it helps!

Thanks Sherry! I remembered the ring clip/reinforced rod. I was just wondering if you’re worried about her getting tangled in that lovely fabric.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Emily,
Nah- so far she has been a very “deliberate” girl. She slowly picks up blocks one at a time and puts them back down. It’s pretty funny because her cousins can be sitting all around her throwing things and smashing things and generally being really rough and crazy and she’s the cool, calm, and collected one. Haha. Of course if the curtains ever turn into a safety concern for her, out they go!

EXCITING. Seriously, our daughter is finally going to have her own room soon. I haven’t even thought about what we’re going to do with it yet. I think I’m still in shock. I love what you did with the closet. . .
Carla says
SOOO adorable! And the room is cute too! I love the curtain as closet door trick (I’ve been doing that since college) it’s way better than a door.
Mary @ stylefyles says
I agree with you – this room was fantastic in the old house and it’s nice to see it stay in the same in the new. As Clara gets older you’ll have so many opportunities to change things up, so why do it now, especially when you put so much effort and thought into building it just-so for your newborn.
And, as soon as I saw the closet I thought the same thing you expressed in writing. My first thought was how awesome that it was bigger than the old closet, and I imagined how fantastic it would be as a little hideaway and semi-private nook for your little girl.
I absolutely ADORE this room!
Laura @ Starting Out Fit says
It looks fantastic! I just LOVE that light fixture too!
Abbie says
Where did you get that white throw that is on top of the wicker basket in front of the chair? I have been looking for one of those!
The room looks absolutely amazing, by the way!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Abbie,
That’s actually a faux sheepskin from Ikea. Hope it helps!

I love all the blue and green tones yet the room still looks so girly. Definitely given me some thoughts to take away for my own little beans’ room update.
Kristen says
LOVE the new room and your blog! Just a quick question, what is the “P” for on the wall? You guys always tend to have a purpose behind every design element and I didn’t see anyone ask yet lol
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kristen,
The P is for Petersik, which is our last name. Nothing too deep, but it works. Haha.

I thought I couldn’t like Clara’s nursery any more, after all the green wall color inspired my own paint choice for my baby’s room – but I think I love this pink. And Clara herself is such a cutie! Great post.

I love Clara’s room! I agree that the closet is awesome! Can you please tell us where you got the personalized growth chart?

Really nice rooms. I´m sure children will like them. And if the children are alright the parents are lucky, too. I know what I am saying, my wife and I get sick when our children are not alright….
Sara says
I love that mobile. When we have kids I’m definitely going to use it… have you ever done one with the wax-coated white wire?

Hey Sara,
That would look awesome! Haven’t done it but we say go for it!

TYVM for your help on anchoring the mirror–understood perfectly now. ;)

Great color, we just painted our daughter’s room a similar light pink shade. One question though: I noticed no crown molding in Clara’s room. What’s your stance on crown molding? Can you do it in some rooms and not others? What are the rules? We put some up in one bathroom and I love the look, but I’m worried it’ll be too heavy throughout the house.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lisa,
We want to add it someday! We love it in every room we can squeeze it into- even bathrooms! No rules though, just do what you like!

I am wanting to put curtains on the inside of a closet like you did in Clara’s room. Where did you get the mounting? And is something easy to do?
Thanks.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Cindy,
We got the tension rod thingie (it also screws in for more strength) for a few bucks at Home Depot. Very easy indeed. You can click the link at the bottom of this post to be taken to our old nursery reveal post which has a link to a post about how we hung that curtain and made the others. Hope it helps!

Adorable. The room and Clara! I love the capiz chandelier. Are they difficult to put up? I’d like to put one in my daughter’s room. I’ve only been able to find them locally at Cost Plus World Market and it’s a little pricey there. Where’d you find yours?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sharon,
We got ours for $50 at a local lighting outlet called The Decorating Outlet. It was pretty easy to hang too!

I miss the green and blue walls that matched so well with your curtains and diaper-changing station in the old room. I was sad that you changed that to pink.

And the small clothes in the wardrobe… how cute!

Hi Sherry and John,
I really enjoy your blog and have loved watching it evolve as your family of three became three. I hope it’s ok that I’d like to offer some (I hope)constructive feedback
Sherry, I think your spunky personality is definitely a huge factor to the success of your blog. You are very articulate and charming, particularity live during the videos where you are narrating. However, I’ve noticed that since the blog switched formats to a more “live update” version that your vibrant personality may be diluting your posts. You are obviously a great writer and have a toolkit of witty commentary. My one piece of advise is perhaps less is more. Specifically, I’ve noticed creeping in side commentary that are border line complaining like the number of nails in Clara’s room, or over usage of a term “Team Paint it Black….” “Team Frost” , or just plain self indulgent, i.e. commentary on your hair or John’s affinity to the Twilight character.
I know all of these examples of just from the last few posts, but I have to admit that this feeling has been building up over the past few weeks as I read your blog regularly and I would feel like a disloyal fan if I did not share this with you.
Please forgive that I am not as articulate as you and have offended you with you commentary. I am so excited to see what else you both do with the house and hope that you take this feedback without taking it personal.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey A Fan,
First, thanks for being a fan! As for your comment, check out this post and this post for more info about our new post-what-and-when-and-how-we-want approach. We’ve learned that the fastest way to please no one is to try to please everyone, so we just blog about our adventures, whatever they may be, and share them for anyone who’d like to drop in on us. Some people want more personal or Clara related posts, others want more cheap projects, others want more expensive renos. Or fewer posts. Or more posts. Or more formal/serious writing. Or more casual/quirky writing. The list goes on and on. We just can’t keep up, so we’ve decided to trust ourselves and write what we love in whatever words feel the most genuine to us at the time. Twilight jokes and all. And we’re so sorry you took our counting of the nail holes as “complainey” – we just thought it was funny that such a small room for such a small girl has so much art!
xoxo,
Sherry (& John)

Don’t listen to the criticism! You guys are doing just fine. :) Also, it looks to me like you guys can add an “after” picture to your house tour! Although, maybe you’ll wait for crown/ceiling paint? Either way, congrats! One room down, many more to go!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Blair,
Aw thanks! Yeah, we’re thinking we might wait until we at least have progress shots of a few other rooms and update things all at once so there’s not one after among a ton of befores. Here’s hoping we make some fast progress! We’re planing a big painting project for the next few days…

I just wanted to comment on your philosophy regarding how you run your blog. It’s incredible how you both stay so focused on doing what is right for your house and for your family.
I imagine it’s overwhelming sometimes with the hundreds of comments that you manually approve each day offering opinions, advice, and thoughts on every decision you share with us.
I appreciate your personal and professional authenticity.
I look forward to seeing your new home evolve.

I let out the most ridiculous excited gasp when I saw Clara gets a big girl closet now, lol. Other than that, I’m glad it looks so much like her old room.

Oh, this is so beautiful. I gotta admit: I kinda teared up a bit, it was just so special to get a glimpse into the kind of love that went into putting that all together for her. Thanks for sharing your daughter’s space.

Not only do you have great taste in decorating, you have great taste in children’s literature. I see The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog book on the shelf there! One of the favorites in this house!

I love love love your nursery. I saw pictures of it in your first home and couldn’t get enough! I was unsure about the pink at first, but it is perfect. The room is so warm an inviting! I started following your blog in 2008 (I think) when I was looking for backyard wedding ideas. My husband and I also DIYed our own backyard wedding thanks to your inspiration! Since then, I have been a loyal fan. Thanks for all of the great reads!

Although green is my favourite colour I think I like these wall colours better than the original Clara room. It really compliments the furnishings etc in the room. The room looks even more beautiful and is a lovely girl room without being too girly. Great job guys! Also great photo taking angles.
Kiran says
I love the room, color combination and of course, sweet baby Clara! Was wondering if you had any shelving idea for a grown up wardrobe?
YoungHouseLove says
We just use baskets on shelves to store things like sweaters and other out of season things, but most of our clothes are in drawers or just hanging on the bar. Ikea has a ton of good ideas for storage (bins, boxes, shelves, hangers, hooks, etc). Hope it helps!

Love the room. Question, how did you pack up the mobile for your move? I saw the step by step on how it was made but was wondering about transportability with the wires and maintaining some semblance of a form. I would love to try to make one but we’ll be moving rather often and I would hate for it to loose some of its loveliness.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey KB,
See that basket under the bench under the window? We plopped them all in there and covered them with a blanket and carried that by the handles into the moving truck and back out into her room. Worked like a charm! We did have a bit of tangled string (which we used to hang them) but were able to untangle it and reuse that as well. It was a miracle!

The room is beautiful, love the closet. One thing about the window curtains and Clara’s next stage of development….they don’t call them curtain climbers for nothing.

That is the perfect pink wall color! My heart got mushy when I saw those wee clothes in the closet.
Hilary @ My So-Called Home says
Clara is a lucky girl indeed. I love the pink and that it’s not Pepto-Bismol pink but definitely has some undertones. Was that rug in a different room or is that new?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Hilary,
That’s actually the same rug that was in her last nursery. We didn’t want to go with anything patterned for fear that it would compete with the curtains. Hope it helps!

So glad you kept the same look. I love it. But it looks like she has sooo much more space now… which is great. The closet is amazing!
As for the curtains, I know if it were my baby in there… I’d have to be in there re-hanging them up everyday! LOL! So good luck with that once she starts pulling up! Hopefully she won’t be a curtain puller like my little one! :)

I just LOVE your blog … and desire so much to have my own house simplified and beautifully decluttered like yours it .. I love it!! :-)
I’ve not read through all your comments .. b/c you get SO many and my intent is NOT to be an annoying commenter telling you how to do something .. but now that Clara can sit up .. I’d go ahead and lower her crib. No one knows the exact day kids will try and pull up .. and often they pull up in the crib before they pull up on furniture. haha! So, if she can sit up in her crib .. then IMO it’s already time to lower it. Again – forgive me for dishing out my unsolicited advice .. just thought I’d make a suggestion. ;-)
Anyway – lovin your new house .. and I love when new post pops up on my google reader. :-D

Awwww Clara is getting so big! She is so darn cute! Her room is just perfect and it will totally grow with her. You won’t have to change a thing for a long time, unless you want to or SHE wants to. :) The closet is awesome. And I definitely believe she will be in there playing. My kids play in their closet all the time and it’s not nearly as nice as this. The room looks wonderful!

It looks like you decided not to paint the inside of her closet this time around. Just curious, any reason why? Her room looks great :)

So cute, as always. Just curious if thats a new rug? And are you planning on keeping it there for the long haul? I know Clara needs a soft place to play, just curious how you chose that color/style rug, etc. There are some super cute ones out there, just wondering how you made your choice.
Keep up the good work, you guys are the BEST!
