The laundry room’s finished!
And we could kiss Lesley for her idea of carving out a new dedicated laundry room. It’s like it was always there! (Plus a new glass door at the end of a formerly dark hallway with light streaming in = angels singing sound effect to us).
When we last checked in, things were looking a little unfinished, but it’s amazing what that last 10% can do for a room. Our first steps were to add the missing filler, baseboard, toe kick, and crown that we had accounted for when we installed the cabinets (to bridge those gaps on the side, top, and bottom). Then it was on to adding the missing door casing, baseboards, and the new doorknob that ties into the rest of ours. Lastly, we had a party and the under-cabinet lights were invited (and installed).
Can I just say that the under-cabinet lights are my new favorite thing? I want to cover my house with them. I want to put on some R&B and bathe in a tub full of under cabinet lights.
They currently plug in behind the washer – you might be able to see the small white cord snaking down the left corner of the room above the washer – but we have a call in to our electrician to add a switch for them on the wall by the door. That way we can flick them on when we walk in instead of using the toggle switch on the cord.
They were sort of an impulse update back when we were buying our cabinets and they were TOTALLY WORTH THE IMPULSE. I know I’m type shouting at you but I mean it. If I were talking to you in person my voice would be raised and my hands would be flapping around. It was all thanks to a reader who mentioned it was easier to see stains and spot treat them before tossing them into the wash after she added some. In summary: Twinkies are not always worth the impulse, but under cabinet lights? DO IT.
When they’re off the room is still nice and bright from the overhead light, although we’d love to add a skylight or a some solar-tube someday.
After our finishing trims, fillers, and lights were in, it was momma’s favorite part. THE THINGS! Like the drying rack, the ironing board, some art, a laundry sorter, and everything that I got to basket up and stack and pile into the cabinets and drawers.
The laundry room wants to hug it out. Look at those outstretched arms.
We thought things on the shelf should largely have simple functions to make life easier, so there’s a basket for lost socks (currently housing a few of Clara’s) and a dish for change and other random stuff we find in pockets before things go into the wash (if you’re a certain aforementioned member of our family that might mean Legos, mom’s earrings, and and a few crayons for good measure). We also like the idea of keeping our everyday detergent out on the shelf so it’s easy to grab (you can see that in the wider shot a few photos back).
There’s also a mint green caddy to store things like lint rollers and dryer balls along with a mint green trash can which we ended up putting right on the counter for small things like balls of lint and tags from clothing or old washed-papers-from-pockets. The little fake-o succulent is just there’s to add some life to the laundry room – even if it’s faux real.
If you spin around to the wall opposite the washer, we have a drying rack. And it’s kind of a game changer. We used to just lay things outside on the daybed to air dry (or in the extra deep windowsill in the living room of our last house) so to have a devoted pull-out drying rack for hanging or draping things (or clipping them up) is pretty great.
I was leaning towards ordering one from The Container Store but then I saw someone saying it was meh and I saw this one on amazon with a ton of good reviews that swayed us. It boasts over 12 square-feet of drying space for hanging or laying items thanks to the pull out design that extends two feet out from the wall. It’s so nice to have this much hanging and draping real estate. I’m officially on the drying rack train now guys. High fives! I feel like we need a secret handshake or something.
Oh and it closes up like this when it’s not in use. Stealth mode.
Underneath it we have a three-bin laundry sorter from Crate & Barrel. John’s sister grabbed one a few weeks ago and raved about it so we took the plunge. It has only been a few days but we’re drinking the same laundry sorter Cool-aid. Picture us sipping it while cruising along on The Drying Rack Express with spare under-cabinet lights in my purse.
For the ironing board we debated everything from a mini-pull-out or fold-down wall or drawer mounted one but I prefer a full sized board and I like it to be out of the way, but portable. Sometimes I just like to iron in front of the TV. We’ve used this system of two large wall hooks secured with anchors to hold it up off the floor in our last laundry area, which worked well (remember our ironing board wars? They are so ON).
We decided to hang it behind the door on the wall (not the door itself since we worried that might rattle). The hooks stick out a little and would otherwise get slammed by the door so we got one of those small white doorstop things for the back of the door. Ignore that light switch near the door though (it’s the old hall light that we debated keeping just in case but it’s ridiculous back there so we’re going to terminate it when our electrician comes to add a switch for the under-cabinet lights).
For now the art on the left side of the room is just framed pages from a book called Time & Tide by Christian Chaize (it’s full of gorgeous photography). I still have my eye on something like this by Emily Jeffords though, so there might be some musical frames going on.
Speaking of the frames, they’re from Target. We loved that the wood tone tied into our baskets and the laundry shelf and counter, so home they came.
The other side of the room has a little more art – like a wood canvas from Help Ink that I love (it says Bee Kind with bees having a blast all over it). I also hung one of my favorite pieces of fabric (it’s an old handkerchief that a friend of mine found with the name Clara embroidered on it). Something about the old linen fabric and the embroidery whispered laundry room to me.
There’s also another print from my Tide & Time book that I clipped up with a wooden pants hanger. Seemed laundry-room appropriate. I’d love to clip up a Clara painting eventually, so we might have a little crafternoon bonanza ahead of us.
In my mood board I also had a printing press drawer (Clara and I collect heart rocks and I thought it would be so cute to display them in an old wooden drawer with all those tiny compartments for them) but we haven’t come across any that would work yet. They’re totally one of those I-see-them-in-every-antique-store-when-I’m-not-looking-for-them-but-they’re-sneaky-like-a-snake-when-I-am-on-the-hunt.
For the cabinet hardware we went with these simple octagon pulls from Lowe’s. We actually grabbed a bunch of options from Anthropologie (Fashion Show! Fashion Show! Fashion Show At Lunch!) but after holding them all up the simplicity and the nice heavy feeling of the Lowe’s ones won us over. We have two metals going on in here (I like a mix as long as each of them are present enough times to look intentional), so these guys are sporting the polished chrome look along with things like the rolling cart and the knobs on the washer & dryer.
On the ceiling we went with a flush mount light from our Shades of Light collection.
We had a whiter/cooler light bulb dangling from the fixture box before we installed this light, but switched it out for a warmer LED one that makes the room feel less cold (it brings out the honey tones in the shelf, frames, and baskets – and zaps some of the starkness out of the white cabinets).
The oil-rubbed bronze doorknob and similar coloring on the washer and dryer tied it in – especially since the washer and dryer also have chrome on them – so they’re sort of a bridge between those two metals that we mixed throughout the room.
Look at John modeling the new laundry room. You’d almost believe he likes laundry…

- New HVAC vent: $59
- Drywall & insulation: $298
- Drywall mudding: $84
- Sub-floor materials: $30

- Ikea cabinets, filler pieces, toe kick, and under-cabinet lighting:
$862$802 (we went with single puck LEDs instead of the long strip ones we originally got) - Appliance re-install: $15
- Tiled marble accent wall: $281
- Shelf & counter (including stain testers & stain): $97
- A new glass door for the hallway + framing and hanging two doors: $297 (new tools included)
- Trim, crown, baseboard and door casings for both doors + two new doorknobs: $268

- Finishing touches (like the overhead light, cabinet hardware, wood frames, etc): $176
- TOTAL: $4,192
We think it would be really fun to have a realtor come and estimate what she might list our house for so we can see how much value this reno may have added (along with the other stuff we’ve done over the past year).
And since we’re listing stuff, I think our favorite functional updates are the laundry sorting cart, the drying rack, all the storage in the cabinets and drawers, and the added countertop/shelf surface we’ve gained. When it comes to things that make it feel the most upgraded, the tile backsplash, under cabinet lights, crown molding, and soft-close doors and drawers definitely elevated the room for us (so if you have a laundry zone that could use a little love, those might be nice add-ons).
Couldn’t leave without a little before & after action. Remember when this was our laundry area back when we moved in?
So. Much. Better.
Thanks for coming along on this winding and long-winded laundry room renovation, guys! It’s one of our favorite house changes so far since it’s literally a room that didn’t exist before. We’re more gleeful than… I don’t know… a pigeon with a hotdog? A dog with a blog? A kid in a candy store without adult supervision and unlimited funds? It’s up there.
Psst- Wanna know where we got something in our house or what paint color we used? Just click on this button:

Looks wonderful! While my laundry room makeover wasn’t as intense, I did many similar things and am very happy with them a year later (the drying rack, ironing board hanger and laundry sorter are all the same-ish as yours). Hope you enjoy your set up as much!!
Also, you are making we want to tackle crown molding in my house!
Tasha says
How do you choose to separate your laundry within those (I spy) 3 compartments? We segregate our laundry (light/white and dark) to avoid any color leeching or fuzz in the dryer, but that’s only two needed.
Hillary says
I know we wash our towels/dishcloths separately so lint doesn’t get on everything and we can wash them on hot.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, last one is sheets/towels for us (we let them build up and do them all at once).

Fun post! And wow — you are not kidding about the difference the last 10% makes! It looks incredible, and seems super functional. Happy laundering!
I was thinking about the comment avalanche you all had this past weekend and wracked my brains trying to think of any other DIY/design bloggers that would evoke this kind of response from their readers, in terms of both the quantity and intensity of the comments, and I came up empty. I really think that is a testament to the quality of this blog and the relationship that you two have built with your readers over the past 7 years. People care about Young House Love, and about its authors.
Courtney says
Cathy, I agree with your thoughts completely!
I already posted some thoughts regarding this topic back on page one of this post… but in regards to what you too have noticed, not even Emily Henderson receives this kind of response, at least not within her post’s comments. Emily Henderson checks out alll the time on Monday and Friday, just taking the day off, with no filler posts on those days… and during weeks that Emily Henderson is working on other design projects, she even skips days of posting with no notice to the readers at all (and she even has staff! J&S do not). Again, I do not see the kind of backlash and disrespect that John and Sherry received last week occuring on EH’s blog, or other’s blogs, at all.
Fellow readers out there: even if you desire to see more posts from J&S, or are displeased with one thing or another, plllease just have a little grace and extend some respect to J&S. They have provided years of FREE inspiration, entertainment, and great design (books, lights, target collection)… so please don’t come at them, after one lighter week, as if they haven’t been busting their tails for us all these years!!! I am literally sickened after reading some of the comments last week. :(

Looks great! Just a thought, I’ve installed undercab LEDs in 2 kitchens and used a wireless outlet/switch for both installs. It’s incredibly easy and doesn’t require an electrician. You connect the lights into the piece that plugs into the outlet, and then you can place the normal-looking light switch anywhere you like. Amazon sells several types, but I have been happy with the Leviton-brand kits.

It’s beautiful! I love all the small storage ideas, like for socks, coins, etc. Practical AND pretty!
Could you provide a link for your under-cabinet lighting? I searched the IKEA site for ‘single puck LED’ and didn’t come up with anything.
Thanks!

I am so, so jealous. That looks fantastic! I agree–you absolutely should get a realtor in for an estimate. That kind of work definitely increased the value. I have a laundry nook that is an extension of the kitchen, so this is like a dream to me. Enjoy it!

Well, after seeing the John-Doing-Laundry Re-enactment I am MORE DISAPPOINTED THAN EVER that book #2 is not a coffee table book of re-enactments. Sigh. I guess I’ll have to make my own collection. Or…that might be weird. Never mind! ;)
I am younghouseLOVING the whole room, guys. Looks swell, give yourselves a big pat on the back!

I love the room, but mainly commenting because I love these kinds of posts – you are too hilarious!!!

I wasn’t a fan of the shelf color last week, but with the frames on the prints to tie it in, you may have swayed me.
Eliza says
Is it weird that I want to come over and do my laundry at your house? It’s so bright, clean, and fresh!
Where did you find the mint trash can? I am looking for something very similar (but bigger) to hold cat food and I know Ikea carries one. I want to see some other options/colors/prices before I order it online. On that note, I would love to see more about how you live as pet owners. Storing food & pet supplies is our challenge right now, as well as keeping things clean!
Beautiful job!
Haley says
Eliza, I have that mint trash can (or one that looks identical), and mine is from World Market! Search for “mint retro galvanized trash can” on their site. Hope that helps!

It looks SO amazing, I would want to do laundry all the time! Especially love that great wood mounted Help Ink print!

This turned out so amazing! I can’t believe how perfect those frames look next to your shelf. This post makes me want to throw my whole hamper in my car, drive to Richmond from Canada, and wash everything. Is that cool with you? K thanks :)

Hey Guys The laundry room looks wonderful! I just wanted to let you know that if you purchased Rationell under-cabinet lighting from IKEA, they sell an Ansluta remote for the system that you can program and mount next to your existing light switch (without having to call your electrician again.) Just a thought! Love the transformation! You guys rock!

Hey guys! LOVE the laundry room reveal! You guys did an amazing job.
I am just now catching up with the discussion on the Curtains post from last week. I hope it’s OK for me to throw in my .02. I really love that you guys decided to scale back the quantity of posts in favor of quality…both in terms of this blog and time with your family. However, I would also add that short posts, reader redesigns, window shopping and quick changes are great blog fodder for me as well. I really like the quick switcheroos because they remind me that I too can make quick impactful changes to my home! Sometimes the really long, in-depth DIY projects are intimidating for little ol’ me!
Mary says
AMAZING! I am so excited for you- makes you want to do laundry, eh? Seeing what went into this, literally down to the studs, is the most fabulous part. On TV they make a reno like this look like it could be done in an hour. Ha! BTW, I know what you mean on the under-cabinet lighting. I added some during my kitchen renovation – hardwired and ,are you ready?, hooked to a remote control that flips them on! – and can’t imagine life without them. So functional.

I LOVE undercabinet lights! Our new house didn’t have them in the kitchen (we installed them in our first house) and it was priority number 1 for my husband…. get me those lights! He put in a switch too. So worth it.
Bridget says
Dude, this is sweet. Also, you solved a ironing board location issue I have with that little hook idea. So simple yet genius!
As for the negative feedback from your post last week – sour grapes in my opinion. I read a lot of blogs and have read yours for many years, and yours never rings anything but real and genuine. Your style has grown and expanded with time (honestly in a similar way that mine has – we are the same age and share a lot of the same life stages). If you had a blog where your style was dramatically different in every room, I’d think you were without your own flavor or consistency. Keep on keepin’ on, kids!
Maryellen says
There’s nothing I don’t love about this room! And seriously…. I would use that change bowl every. single. day.

This is SO gorgeous, I just love your laundry room. I have stick and peel tile in my LR floor and would so love real tile, but I’m scared to death I’d screw it up, no matter how many you tube video’s I watch that make it look not-so-difficult. The only things I’d change (and this is just how we use our room) is I’d remove the laundry basket, and put a base cabinet there. Two reasons: we bring in our laundry baskets, so don’t need a sorter, AND more importantly, the bottom of the baskets has scratched the top of the dryer, which is where we used to set it, and having that base cabinet gives us a place to put the baskets and it doesn’t scratch the top of the washer or dryer (so you may want to think of that). Plus – I have the extra storage from the base cabinet, which is always nice.
But lovely, as always – love the herringbone tile.
And can I just say – I miss more posts a week – I understand your reasons, but I miss them anyway.
Emily F says
It. Looks. AWESOME!!! Love it! Now I’m sitting at work, wishing I could go home and tear my laundry room apart and make it pretty! :)

I neglected to read some of the 1000+ comments, til now. Some people are brutally honest and some of those are out-to-lunch…IMHO :)
I still read this blog everyday and I have done so since the first house…keep being true to yourself. You are still a ray of sunshine in my work day. (I still LOVE your shorter breezy posts)
Beth says
While I think the laundry room looks beautiful, I’m disappointed that you didn’t take your long weekend to draft a post addressing the constructive comments that were posted here. Ignoring them is disrespectful to your readers who visit the site on a daily basis. Needless to say, you handled the situation poorly, and I will no longer be coming back.
Mary says
+1
Kori says
Did you miss the blurb at the top of the page? I’m sure the comments rocked them to the core and I cannot believe for one minute that they are ignoring them (even though some do not deserve their time due to the lack of tact or respect). If you believe that they are being disrespectful, than I would think that John and Sherry might be better off with you not returning.
Courtney says
Beth, Mary, and anyone else with this response: you have tunnel vision. J&S have been busting their tails on many other projects, and even gave a heads-up that the week would be lighter. Are they not allowed a breather and/or to catch up on other side projects every once in a while? We do not know what it is that came up last week; what if one of them is sick, or if there has been some tragic event that they needed time for. What is wrong with you folks?? Where are folk’s understanding and grace, or just respect?? J&S do not owe an explanation, an apology, nor a post every single day. COME ON…

I can’t pretend to know what John and Sherry are thinking about all of last weeks comments if it were me I wouldn’t be able to respond to them for weeks. As I was reading through them I went through moments of rage, periods of wanting to cry and just wanting to give them a hug. What they do with their business and their family is totally up to them and if readers don’t like it they don’t have to read it. There are a ton of readers who get where John and Sherry are coming from and respect them for making the choices they have. I have no doubt that they will respond to the comments in a classy and mature way as they have every time they have received hard to take feedback. I personally disagree with all the negative comments but appreciate that they are taking the time to let it sink in before responding. This shows a respect for their readers…if they had responded in a couple of days it would appear that they were brushing it off and responding just for the sake of responding.
John and Sherry, please don’t think that all your readers feel that way. Most of us really love your blog and look forward to reading your posts. Your blog has taught me so many things and I hope it sticks around until Teddy finishes college!!! At the end of the day, if people don’t like your style, choices or the way you run your business then they are free to find another blog that better suits what they are looking for.
Rachel says
Well done, those final touches really complete the whole thing. You should definitely get a house valuation to see what all the changes are worth money wise.
Just to add my tuppence to the debate from last week. Recently the laundry room has obvioulsy been your focus and that has led to mostly long, technical type posts. Thse are great but I also enjoy the simpler updates/craft/personal (ie clara concersations) posts that you do. Yes, it can be disapointing when there is no post, just an update BUT no other blog I read maintains such a consistant blogging schedule. You aren’t a newspaper or huge website that has a team putting together material, it’s just you! As such I think it would be fine to say ‘we’re having a week long holiday’ or ‘no posts for the next two days’, but if possible tell us in advance. If you could do a small posts though thqt would be good cos I love the way you both write.
As for the competitions, if it’s international I always enter – but as there is no story with the entry if its not international it doesn’t count in my head as a post. I think the negativity from the giveaways may be that it didn’t make that much difference when it was an afternoon post but on its own for the day its so small. Maybe if we got updates on what competition winners chose that could be fun!
Ultimately it’s your blog so do what makes you happy. Readers can sense things and we want you happy!
Amanda says
It looks really great! This is definitely my favourite room / laundry room you’ve done. I loved the cheeky clothespin light in your old house, but I reeaaaally love your light from your collection in there. (Although, part of me hopes you do add a solar tube light eventually. Both of my bathrooms are windowless and I’ve been debating adding those eventually. Will you keep your SOL light if you choose to do that?
(And sorry to refer to Thursdays post, but I love your posts about tech upgrades (nest thermostat, etc) – not sure how much tech is out there that you’re interested in, but maybe you could use those as a “short and fun” post for your quickie stockpile)

I love this addition to your house! I just love it. It is neat to see big renovations like this in your newest house (like the outdoor space, love it). Love the tile and wood tones. Well done!!!
Also, I will read this blog until you go decide to be designers to the stars or whatever you do until you are 85 and retire. I have enjoyed you guys since before the blog name change at the first house. I will very likely enjoy you no matter what you do. I think it’s terrific that your blog has stayed true to you throughout its existence and that you move forward in life trying to carve it out as you wish to live, staying true to your values.
Rock on, DIY friends!! :-) All the best.

Sooooo jealous! My laundry “room” (and I use that term loosely) is in the garage. Really awesome work, another favorite post and favorite before and after. My husband is going to be hiding from this one (I think he secretly follows your blog because when I start talking about your awesome work and how we can use your ideas, he always seems already familiar with what you are doing!)
Robin @ our semi organic life says
Love the room! Hope you didn’t get those IKEA under the counter lights that are circles about 2″ diameter with glass twist on plates. We have those at our rental house and they are constantly heating up way too hot and the glass frequently falls randomly down. It’s actually shattered on our granite counter tops before – usually when its scorching hot and impossible to touch the white metal. Perhaps an easy fix would be to put a little glue so they don’t come unscrewed (it’s a measly quarter turn keeping the glass attached).
Besides that I love the room! Hope cloth diapering is going well.
Tamrah says
It looks gorgeous! We once used a laundry sorter similar to that, but we now sort our loads into too many different categories. Whites, darks, mediums/lights, reds/pinks/oranges, towels. Am I the only one? We are probably on the crazy train over here.

Hey guys! I’m not sure you want more commentary about Thursday’s post, but if you notice a drop in your income (possibly due to lower readership because of fewer posts), then you can adjust that on your own. I feel like you owe nothing to me and you need to do what’s best for your family, whatever that looks like!

Just read *some* of that thread from Thursday…wow that was intense! Y’all, just do you! You warned everyone that you would be scaling back when Teddy arrived and so many people were in support of it on the comments. In my opinion, your content is still great! For anyone who is tackling similar projects to the laundry room, this will be a great resource. It just doesn’t seem like much has changed to me! Still following along, and wishing all the best for you!

Um you guys…I hate laundry…and that laundry room makes me want to wash anything and everything just so I wouldn’t have to leave! Can you add a chair for me? And an iPod dock???
On to the whole feedback thing. I’m giving my two sense because I’m disgusted by people and their sense of entitlement. I’ve been reading this blog B.C (before Clara) and I’ve enjoyed it so much! Do I agree with all your style choices? No. Do I care enough to write you guys and tell you? No. I don’t live there, you do. Do I want you to spend more money? No. It’s not mine to spend. Do I wish you wrote more? Of course. But…here is the big but…How many of the people here reading this blog have a fulltime blog and 2 kids? Not many. Yes, you both work for the blog and your brand but I tried to blog once…it’s hard! Also, you have to do a project, take pictures, write about it, edit etc. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into it and I whatever you give I’ll be happy to read and if I don’t like it, I won’t read it…or maybe give you some nice constructive feedback.
The only thing I think you guys need to think about is what direction do you want the blog to go in?
Other than that, keep doing you boo and say “Bye Felicia” to all those haters…no body puts my imaginary BFFs in a corner.

About the changes to the blog – I don’t mind the technical posts because it’s super helpful for people when they want to tackle a big job. But on the crazy days, I like the fillers (house tours, reader re-designs…) or even favorite recipes. I check in daily and always enjoy ALL your posts! Keep ’em coming!
