The laundry room’s finished!
And we could kiss Lesley for her idea of carving out a new dedicated laundry room. It’s like it was always there! (Plus a new glass door at the end of a formerly dark hallway with light streaming in = angels singing sound effect to us).
When we last checked in, things were looking a little unfinished, but it’s amazing what that last 10% can do for a room. Our first steps were to add the missing filler, baseboard, toe kick, and crown that we had accounted for when we installed the cabinets (to bridge those gaps on the side, top, and bottom). Then it was on to adding the missing door casing, baseboards, and the new doorknob that ties into the rest of ours. Lastly, we had a party and the under-cabinet lights were invited (and installed).
Can I just say that the under-cabinet lights are my new favorite thing? I want to cover my house with them. I want to put on some R&B and bathe in a tub full of under cabinet lights.
They currently plug in behind the washer – you might be able to see the small white cord snaking down the left corner of the room above the washer – but we have a call in to our electrician to add a switch for them on the wall by the door. That way we can flick them on when we walk in instead of using the toggle switch on the cord.
They were sort of an impulse update back when we were buying our cabinets and they were TOTALLY WORTH THE IMPULSE. I know I’m type shouting at you but I mean it. If I were talking to you in person my voice would be raised and my hands would be flapping around. It was all thanks to a reader who mentioned it was easier to see stains and spot treat them before tossing them into the wash after she added some. In summary: Twinkies are not always worth the impulse, but under cabinet lights? DO IT.
When they’re off the room is still nice and bright from the overhead light, although we’d love to add a skylight or a some solar-tube someday.
After our finishing trims, fillers, and lights were in, it was momma’s favorite part. THE THINGS! Like the drying rack, the ironing board, some art, a laundry sorter, and everything that I got to basket up and stack and pile into the cabinets and drawers.
The laundry room wants to hug it out. Look at those outstretched arms.
We thought things on the shelf should largely have simple functions to make life easier, so there’s a basket for lost socks (currently housing a few of Clara’s) and a dish for change and other random stuff we find in pockets before things go into the wash (if you’re a certain aforementioned member of our family that might mean Legos, mom’s earrings, and and a few crayons for good measure). We also like the idea of keeping our everyday detergent out on the shelf so it’s easy to grab (you can see that in the wider shot a few photos back).
There’s also a mint green caddy to store things like lint rollers and dryer balls along with a mint green trash can which we ended up putting right on the counter for small things like balls of lint and tags from clothing or old washed-papers-from-pockets. The little fake-o succulent is just there’s to add some life to the laundry room – even if it’s faux real.
If you spin around to the wall opposite the washer, we have a drying rack. And it’s kind of a game changer. We used to just lay things outside on the daybed to air dry (or in the extra deep windowsill in the living room of our last house) so to have a devoted pull-out drying rack for hanging or draping things (or clipping them up) is pretty great.
I was leaning towards ordering one from The Container Store but then I saw someone saying it was meh and I saw this one on amazon with a ton of good reviews that swayed us. It boasts over 12 square-feet of drying space for hanging or laying items thanks to the pull out design that extends two feet out from the wall. It’s so nice to have this much hanging and draping real estate. I’m officially on the drying rack train now guys. High fives! I feel like we need a secret handshake or something.
Oh and it closes up like this when it’s not in use. Stealth mode.
Underneath it we have a three-bin laundry sorter from Crate & Barrel. John’s sister grabbed one a few weeks ago and raved about it so we took the plunge. It has only been a few days but we’re drinking the same laundry sorter Cool-aid. Picture us sipping it while cruising along on The Drying Rack Express with spare under-cabinet lights in my purse.
For the ironing board we debated everything from a mini-pull-out or fold-down wall or drawer mounted one but I prefer a full sized board and I like it to be out of the way, but portable. Sometimes I just like to iron in front of the TV. We’ve used this system of two large wall hooks secured with anchors to hold it up off the floor in our last laundry area, which worked well (remember our ironing board wars? They are so ON).
We decided to hang it behind the door on the wall (not the door itself since we worried that might rattle). The hooks stick out a little and would otherwise get slammed by the door so we got one of those small white doorstop things for the back of the door. Ignore that light switch near the door though (it’s the old hall light that we debated keeping just in case but it’s ridiculous back there so we’re going to terminate it when our electrician comes to add a switch for the under-cabinet lights).
For now the art on the left side of the room is just framed pages from a book called Time & Tide by Christian Chaize (it’s full of gorgeous photography). I still have my eye on something like this by Emily Jeffords though, so there might be some musical frames going on.
Speaking of the frames, they’re from Target. We loved that the wood tone tied into our baskets and the laundry shelf and counter, so home they came.
The other side of the room has a little more art – like a wood canvas from Help Ink that I love (it says Bee Kind with bees having a blast all over it). I also hung one of my favorite pieces of fabric (it’s an old handkerchief that a friend of mine found with the name Clara embroidered on it). Something about the old linen fabric and the embroidery whispered laundry room to me.
There’s also another print from my Tide & Time book that I clipped up with a wooden pants hanger. Seemed laundry-room appropriate. I’d love to clip up a Clara painting eventually, so we might have a little crafternoon bonanza ahead of us.
In my mood board I also had a printing press drawer (Clara and I collect heart rocks and I thought it would be so cute to display them in an old wooden drawer with all those tiny compartments for them) but we haven’t come across any that would work yet. They’re totally one of those I-see-them-in-every-antique-store-when-I’m-not-looking-for-them-but-they’re-sneaky-like-a-snake-when-I-am-on-the-hunt.
For the cabinet hardware we went with these simple octagon pulls from Lowe’s. We actually grabbed a bunch of options from Anthropologie (Fashion Show! Fashion Show! Fashion Show At Lunch!) but after holding them all up the simplicity and the nice heavy feeling of the Lowe’s ones won us over. We have two metals going on in here (I like a mix as long as each of them are present enough times to look intentional), so these guys are sporting the polished chrome look along with things like the rolling cart and the knobs on the washer & dryer.
On the ceiling we went with a flush mount light from our Shades of Light collection.
We had a whiter/cooler light bulb dangling from the fixture box before we installed this light, but switched it out for a warmer LED one that makes the room feel less cold (it brings out the honey tones in the shelf, frames, and baskets – and zaps some of the starkness out of the white cabinets).
The oil-rubbed bronze doorknob and similar coloring on the washer and dryer tied it in – especially since the washer and dryer also have chrome on them – so they’re sort of a bridge between those two metals that we mixed throughout the room.
Look at John modeling the new laundry room. You’d almost believe he likes laundry…
Budget breakdown:
- Framing (labor & materials): $360
- Electric (labor & materials): $400
- Plumbing (labor & materials): $375
- New dryer vent: $87
- New HVAC vent: $59
- Drywall & insulation: $298
- Drywall mudding: $84
- Sub-floor materials: $30
- Tiled floor: $451
- Ikea cabinets, filler pieces, toe kick, and under-cabinet lighting:
$862$802 (we went with single puck LEDs instead of the long strip ones we originally got) - Appliance re-install: $15
- Tiled marble accent wall: $281
- Shelf & counter (including stain testers & stain): $97
- A new glass door for the hallway + framing and hanging two doors: $297 (new tools included)
- Trim, crown, baseboard and door casings for both doors + two new doorknobs: $268

- Finishing touches (like the overhead light, cabinet hardware, wood frames, etc): $176
- TOTAL: $4,192
We think it would be really fun to have a realtor come and estimate what she might list our house for so we can see how much value this reno may have added (along with the other stuff we’ve done over the past year).
And since we’re listing stuff, I think our favorite functional updates are the laundry sorting cart, the drying rack, all the storage in the cabinets and drawers, and the added countertop/shelf surface we’ve gained. When it comes to things that make it feel the most upgraded, the tile backsplash, under cabinet lights, crown molding, and soft-close doors and drawers definitely elevated the room for us (so if you have a laundry zone that could use a little love, those might be nice add-ons).
Couldn’t leave without a little before & after action. Remember when this was our laundry area back when we moved in?
So. Much. Better.
Thanks for coming along on this winding and long-winded laundry room renovation, guys! It’s one of our favorite house changes so far since it’s literally a room that didn’t exist before. We’re more gleeful than… I don’t know… a pigeon with a hotdog? A dog with a blog? A kid in a candy store without adult supervision and unlimited funds? It’s up there.
Psst- Wanna know where we got something in our house or what paint color we used? Just click on this button:

Gadzooks! What a change! I love how “fresh” this room feels. And I am still so glad that you guys went with the lighter colored countertop. It looks amazing with the green accessories and the wall art frames. $herdog, you are a decorating goddess among mortals. :)
Judging from the picture, it looks like that small ceiling light fixture brings in a TON of light. Is it really that bright? I have one of those hideous, big-honkin fluorescent tube lights in my kitchen that I’d love to replace with something like this but don’t want to sacrifice the amount of light it provides. Do you think a small light like yours would work in a kitchen? And do you happen to have a tutorial on how to switch that bad boy out? :) Thanks guys!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, it’s super light for a small room (this one is only 8 x 7, and has no window).

I LOVE a good before and after shot, but this one takes the cake! You guys are amazing!! What a transformation. You’re a real inspiration, thanks for all you do and sharing it with us. :)
Joelle says
I think it looks great! so bright, so happy. going to order that wall drying rack right now.
question for you guys…and maybe a post topic one day. I’m on the look out for original artwork. I know we can’t have every space in our house be originals, but I like the art you pick out, and i love some of it being original (no prints). how do you find these artists? they look pretty affordable. do they come to you? do you have a site you use, or referrals? I just don’t even know where to start to look.
maria says
looks great! wow can i bring laundry over? lol. only thing i am not crazy about is all the mismatched white–the cabinets and the machines and the white wall all next to each other just look kinda mismatched. but that might be the way its photographing. but the floor tile and the wall tile and the accessories are gorgeous.
Kate says
Wow! What a transformation. I love the crown molding. I think your site is perfect the way it is. Sometimes I skim over in depth descriptions of things since I’m not doing major renovations and just want to see pictures, but the in depth posts will be helpful when I do start renovations. But most days, I like the family posts and the decor posts because that’s where my life is. I think you guys do a great job at balancing each style of post and provide something for everyone.
Jackie says
It looks so awesome! And I bet it added a ton of value to your home. Could you give us a time breakdown? I love seeing how you split up your budget, but it’d be fun to see how much time different steps took. Obviously it’s a mix of pros vs diy, but I think it’d be interesting all the same.
sally says
Love that dryer rack! I have one that stands and then folds up – so useful for drying little socks and things like sweaters and other hand washables.
I love a bright room. Sort of like the operating room of laundry.
Abby says
Looks great. I am curious of the depth of your washer/dryer. We are working on plans for our laundry room and were advised against cabinets above b/c we may not be able to reach over to get anything. How does the reach feel?
YoungHouseLove says
Works for me, and I’m short! I can’t get to that top shelf (John can!) but a little folding plastic stepstool in the right cabinet gives me ups ;)

Holy smokes! I can’t believe this space wasn’t even here a few short weeks ago. Worth every penny.

Are you guys Harry Potter fans? My husband saw something online where someone put a Free Dobby or Dobby Fund on the lone sock basket. Now I’m obsessed with the idea!
Erica says
Oh my word. I did the happy clap when I saw that first picture. I love it! Well done Petersiks!
Cynthia LaPan says
Absolutely gorgeous. I want to hug Lesley, too! Good brain on that one. (…Lesley…? Can you see this? **HUG**)
I’m so glad you went with the warm, wooden countertops. I’m wondering if in the future, you would consider doing a “this is what we think about this countertop-material post”? (Perhaps you have already done one, I apologize if I’m behind the times.) It seems like you guys have experimented and worked with a few different countertop materials, and I’m sure we could benefit from your experience. I would think that you could include the material (was it MDF?) that you used on Teddy’s changing table as well. Of course, different surfaces have different water exposure, but whatevs! Anyway, just a thought!
Alicia Ludwig says
Looks A-MAZE-ING!!

I love the idea of getting a realtor in (and what a good post idea that would be!). We’ve done a lot of upgrades around our house and I’m always curious when a good time to get an assessment of the value would be (we’ve been there less than 2 years)
Jessica d says
How are you guys liking the washer and dryer? We are considering purchasing them and would love some feedback now that you’ve had them a while.
YoungHouseLove says
Really like them!

The room looks fantastic! I love that drying rack and laundry sorter. We are starting to work on the plans for our laundry room/mudroom (currently the concrete floor needs major repair, like sinking kinda repairs) so it’ll be a while. Mostly I just wanted to say that I hope the pigeon/hot dog comment was a nod to Mo Willems and not just a coincidence. My kids LOVE the pigeon books, especially when I read them after I’ve had some caffeine ;).
Dana says
About lost baby socks, behold my tale of woe.
The very day my baby girl came home from the hospital, a couple tiny baby socks got sucked into the motor of the washing machine. The machine broke and it cost a couple hundred dollars (and 5 days) to get it fixed.
Now we use the mesh lingerie bags to wash tiny socks and wash clothes.
Karen Blount says
I didn’t chime in on Thursday, but I’ll add my comments now. I love, love, love your blog. I like the how’d you do that, longish posts and I like the short ones too. I will always follow your blog. I would love to meet you (I live close enough to do that), but I’ll settle right now for just following the blog.
BamaCarol says
Beautiful! I know you will get tons of use out of this addition and be glad that you took the plunge.
Crystal says
WOW you guys are amazing! I love everything about it! I’m so interested to see what a realtor has to say about all the updates you’ve done so far. If you have any time would you mind giving me a quick explanation on how you installed the cabinet filler pieces? I’m at that point now with my Ikea kitchen installation and I’m not sure what fasteners to use, did you use blocking behind them, did you use the pre drilled shelf peg holes or just go right through the cabinet? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Did I mention how much I love your laundry room?
Julia says
Agree — I’d love if you could share more about the “last 10%” process. I’ve been debating installing some IKEA cabinets in a (non-kitchen) spot in our house, and weirdly the part I’m most stuck on is the filler panels/moldings. I haven’t found a really good web source yet describing the process in detail and the pros/cons of different methods, and it seems like honestly it’s that step that really makes or breaks how profesh the final result is. Yours came out so great, so it would be wonderful to hear how you approached it.
Trudy says
LOVE your laundry room! Definitely a very worthy investment. We spend so much time on laundry, making it pleasant is well worth the effort. Young House Love is STILL my fave blog by far. I’m all for the blog and your readers following you, not you adjusting your life to suit your followers. You have great ideas, great taste, a fun writing style and zest for life – just do whatever you want with your blog! I will happily follow.
Ewa A. says
Amazing! You guys are so inspirational. I love that room. Well done ;)
Marsha Kern says
The laundry room is so nice! But more important I so appreciated your blog after Teddy was born saying you were going to cut back and that family was first! In today’s world so many families get caught up in “more is more” and the family often takes the back seat. I read that post to my husband because even though we are in our 60’s we so admire young couples who realize that simpler is better. Keep in doing what you both do. It is wonderful!
Brittany says
Fantastic job, guys! The laundry room looks great. I love the way the frames tie in with your stain choice. A lot of times I feel like your rooms read too cool, but this one seems just right! And for the first time in a long time, I’m feeling inspired by something you’ve posted. I love when you get back to real DIY. There are a million lifestyle blogs out there, and pinterest is overrun with cutesy little projects. I read here hoping for inspiration as I tackle my own home renovation. DIY is where you all started. I hope you don’t lose sight of that!
lauren says
I am equal-parts adoring the drying corner and the mint accents. So so so good. Plus clean laundry is the best smell and I bet this room will have that in spades :)
Plein Jane says
So can this be the Lesley Laundry, and can she come for a dedication and whack a bottle of Tide against the washing machine?

I can’t believe you guys built a whole new room in your house!! It looks amazing.
LeCheech says
So first and foremost, I went back and read that thread with someone complaining about you not doing enough.
I want to say ugly things about people who can’t see beyond the business, I really do.
Let me tell you, your blog is full of love, hard-work, and life. Sure, it’s a business, it brings you money, but… It is YOUR business, YOUR life, YOUR earnings, and YOUR decision. As someone who accidentally found your blog when I was researching water barreling, let me just say I have NEVER. EVER. EVER EVER EVER!! Been disappointed in any of your posts, upgrades, spray paint, target finds, or how much you spend on something.
I adore your little moments of crafting with Clara, some of the stuff that pops out of her mouth, and every little bit of it. Shame on the ones who us ‘honesty’ to be destructive. Please, please never ever stop doing what you’re doing, however you want to do it. I know I’m not alone in saying there is love from the other side of your screen.
Now, if *I* get to be ‘honest’ here, I’d like to say the little Burger moments and Clara conversations would be darling to have thrown into the mix if you haven’t time for a big update. I’m actually waiting for the next book update, since I know you’re knee-deep in that too… Which just makes me more gaffed that someone could accuse you of not doing enough…
The laundry room is AMAZING! It makes me want to remodel mine but it’s the garage too. Sadface.
Kathleen says
I couldn’t agree more that “It is YOUR business, YOUR life, YOUR earnings, and YOUR decision.” Thanks for taking out opinions into consideration, but please don’t take it too seriously. You guys need to do you. There will be plenty of us still here looking forward to whatever you have to share, whenever you care to or have time to share it. Thanks for the inspiration. We are doing cement counters in the next couple weeks. Wish us luck!!
Stacy says
Oh man this is so gorgeous. I have a laundry hallway (a 6×9 room with a door on each end, that you have to walk through to get into the house from the garage) so I don’t have quite enough space to do what you’ve done, but this project has given me SO many ideas. Seeing it all come together has been so great!
One question – is the ceiling painted the same color as the walls? It looks a shade or two darker in these photos, but I’m wondering if that’s because there’s a break now with the crown and/or because ceilings just always look darker.
YoungHouseLove says
Same color :)

Swoon! I love this! That hardware from Lowes is awesome and the pops of mint are perfect.
As a side note, I love the blog still. You’ve taken a turn but I think it works because you’ve still got the great personalities that drew people to you in the first place. I find myself reading the very technical posts even when I don’t have plans or dreams to do any similar renovation. As for the shirt posts, people are right. Those are a dime a dozen on Pinterest and elsewhere. Can you do them? Sure. But if they are forced and don’t have as much personality, and add stress to you, then are they worth it? Nope. I agree with others who have said that you’ll never please everyone so focus on your family and your loyal followers will stick with you!
sarah says
I too read through some of the comments on Thursday but I thought it was a little much ado about something not that important. I don’t pay to come to this site, I come for for free, I read, and I move on with my day. If there isn’t material one day, no biggie.
I love the laundry room! It’s amazing what a different under-cabinet lighting makes.
Melissa @ HOUSEography says
Looks AMAZING guys! I would be so curious about the added value as well. Kind of makes me want to do some upgrades in our laundry room too!
Lisa says
I think in all your posts, especially the mundane technical ones, you should include a picture of John. Just to you know, enhance things a bit.
Alexandra says
First – holy moly this room looks stunning! Love, love, love it. Hearing what the added value is would be a big pat on the back for y’all, I think.
Second – I read the last post before the update & comments, so I just wanted to throw in one more reader’s feedback for you. I look for new posts from YHL first when I pull up my Feedly reader… This morning, I actually thought to myself “there better be a new post from YHL on here!” Count me as another reader who would go for small, “filler” posts on busy days and also as another reader who enjoys the family-related posts. Yes, the laundry room has resulted in longer, more technical posts, but your Projects page with this kind of detailed info is a GOLD MINE. I love knowing I can find tutorials there for things I would normally never have the confidence to do myself.
Cheers to being done with this beautiful and functional new laundry room!!!
KarynH says
it looks great!! I can’t believe I have never thought to mount a shallow shelf along the back of my washing machine and dryer..or the under cabinet lights….genius!!!
Shanna says
That drying rack is genious! But so is the whole make-over, naturally. It’s hard to beauti-fy (beauti-fy?) appliances, but I think the combination of slick shiny whites and natural wood/stone is a nice way to tie everything together. Really nice!
Christine says
It really came together so well! The tile and the molding/filler turned out great! Love seeing all the little details, thanks for sharing!

It’s beautiful.

Beautiful! I have to give you a tip. I’ve been stalking Jadeite butter tubs on eBay and my first thought on seeing your first pic was that one of those would look beautiful in place of your brown dish. I want the simple round one but they also come shaped like a chicken or bunny. I think you might love the bunny one and I know Clara will!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! I can’t believe how this came together in such a short period of time. Although, if I didn’t have use of my washer and dryer I would be very motivated as well.

Now I have one question…what type of under cabinet lights did you pick? I’m looking for some for my kitchen but am having a hard time making a decision here. Thanks!

First of all, the laundry room looks gorgeous (especially that tile, sigh!).
Then secondly, I just have to say that this post was hilarious! I laughed out loud to some of that stuff. Stealth mode :D
Mandy says
OMG, I want to hug it out with your laundry room. That floor tile is BUTTERY goodness. Do you find yourself just standing in the doorway staring into it?
Abigayle says
Seriously, your laundry room is so pretty and I totally want to fix ours up after our little one arrives in October (almost there!!) – we already have a dedicated room for laundry which I love, and I’m so glad you guys went that route. It really does seem like it should have been there all along. But seriously, I feel like I just need to print out pictures of this room to hang up as a reminder that my laundry room can be pretty too.
And after reading this post, I can’t believe I haven’t wanted this one thing all along: for you to have your rooms assessed after each reno so that we can see what the value you gained vs what you spent was. I have a feeling it’s ridiculous to expect that after each space you renovate, but it would be really cool to see especially after the big ones like kitchens, bathrooms, the laundry room, etc.
Keep up the good work John and Sherry! You are a constant inspiration and don’t let the haters from the post before this one get you down. Haters gonna hate. I think your blog has grown with you and your family and I’ve never thought that it was lacking something. You have a growing family, two kids to care for, you give your readers opportunities to win things for free, and you don’t do sponsored posts or sell out to make a buck. You guys rock and I can’t wait for the second book to come out and the chance to meet you guys (again).
Jane says
Looks great!
Lots of work!
Great job!
Special project!
Fun elaboration!
Thanks for all the shared detail getting there. I always appreciate.
I am Clara, Teddy & Burger starved! :) Didn’t that big boy turn 5 months already? Is Clara back in school? This year she can share about her new brother!
Gooooo, YHL!

Hooray, hooray! You built a room! I’m completely inspired to do the same in our sad hoarder’s paradise of a basement where our laundry currently lives. And I’m so happy to see you used your shades of light fixture!! We just put in that same flush mount when we redid our walk in closet and I’m so happy every time I see it. We tried on several light bulbs and couldn’t agree more on the LED choice. Great job!
Jessaca says
I think this looks really good, but I think the crowning jewel is the crown molding that made it look more than builder basic. Hanging up that little picture with a pant hanger was a really cute idea! I think you should do a post on some other cute laundry ideas you had but didn’t have the time/room/etc. to include that other readers might appreciate. Our laundry room is our garage passthrough, so we have zilch space, but I don’t do laundry…my husband does and he could care less how the space looks! :)
FR says
This is definitely one of your more impressive transformations. Love the look and that you are breaking away some from the white frames everywhere. The light wood looks great here.
As for commenting from the other day, I totally missed all of that until today. My thoughts: I love the blog and most of the content. I agree that I do skim over a lot of the super technical stuff, but I also agree that your ability to give detailed explanations of your projects sets you apart from every other blog out there. I just made some Ikea Rast hacked nightstands and had to figure most of it out on my own because the blog instructions just weren’t very good.
I do miss the days of more posting. I feel like over the past two years you have gradually been posting less and less and while it has been explained, selfishly, I would just like at least one more post a week. I don’t count fab freebie posts as posts so really you are only posting content 3 times per week. Adding a Friday post back into the mix (maybe move fab freebie to Friday since you can pre-create those) and doing some of the suggested smaller updates would help the situation.
You won’t be losing me as a reader. I love the site and how genuine you both seem with your reader interactions. I also love that you don’t post the same crap that is all over blog-land ie Stitchfix etc. so in comparison to most blogs, I think you guys are doing a great job at giving us actual content.
ps Sherry – I hope you are far enough removed from child birth that those crazy hormones aren’t making all of this hard on you to read! Only speaking for myself, but my comments are out of admiration not disdain.
