Seeing as this fun little $22 lamp from HomeGoods is one of our favorite Sue The Napkin colors, which we plan to use as our whole house color inspiration (see them all here) I had to make it mine. It’s really cute in person, but it’s kinda ugly with the paneling behind it. Haha. Sorry ’bout that.
I knew it would look all purty when it’s glowing – and cast lots of fun shadows on the wall. You know, like this:
Except try to imagine it without the soul crushing wood paneling. Slowly but surely we’re working up the energy to tackle the kitchen. Every day that I have to stare at that paneling gets me one day closer to running to the store for primer.
Anyway back to our new lamp and the title of this post. This picture explains it all:
That’s right. My new lamp gives me disco fever. I love it. And it’s Friday. Let’s dance. Off to learn some moves from the adorable Finnish guy who made this How To Disco Dance video:

That lamp is lush in the dark! (You know what I mean!) I’d love to find something like that over here now … seeing so much cute stuff from American shops makes me pine :(

Cute lamp! Love the disco vibe!
Did you know your postcard shelves from the old house are on the front page of http://www.casasugar.com today as one of the DIY projects for the weekend?

FUN LAMP!
I was at C&B with my sister this week and saw Sue the Napkin. I tried explaining why I was so excited over a napkin and I’m pretty sure she thought I was nuts.
Carrie says
Hi!
I’m new to your blog and thought that “Sue the Napkin” was some new designer I didn’t know about….. HA!
Second of all, a crate and barrell napkin is my house’s color pallette/inspiration too!!!! (A discontinued napkin with paisley greens, blues, and purples…)
I made the two napkins into the tops of bathroom curtains and have incorporated those colors throughout the house… Wish I could show you! NOT tech savy….
I think crate and barrel etc. napkins/placemats are GREAT inspiration pieces.
LOVE the blog!
Carrie

That’s so funny! Crate & Barrel clearly has no idea how inspiring their clearance napkins are!

What a cute lamp!
I can imagine switching on that lamp in the kitchen in the morning, when it’s still dark outside, and drink the first cup of tea before switching on the other lights.
Or, of course, a disco-themed party with a buffet set up in the kitchen, hehe.
Rebbie says
I love the lamp and I LOVE that video. It looks like a SNL skit. Made my day.
Adrienne says
Love the lamp and the disco, and feel your pain in regard to the paneling. I’ve been surrounded by real, thick, orange-y oak wood paneling for the last 6 months since moving into our dream house at the beach. Trying to get the nerve to paint it all out along with our dark wood cabinets. (I’m not quite ready to be responsible for how it all turns out!)
Love, love, LOVE your stuff, BTW :)
Emily says
I feel ya on the wood paneling, though I’m the “rip it out completely” kind of girl. I know whatever color you paint it will make it really work though! :)
And here’s what’s going on in our house: Every day that I have to stare at that
panelingugly bathroom gets me one day closer to running to thestoregarage forprimerthe wallpaper steamer and a crowbar.YoungHouseLove says

Oh Sherry — Just what I needed Friday morning…totally dancing at my desk!! LOL Oh yes…love the lamp too :) (…but the old guy’s “duck walk” at the end…totally made my day!)

make your panels walls wainscoting by:
1. snapping a line on the wall
2. taking a circular saw with the blade set at the depth of the panelling and cut.
3. Remove the top portion of paneling and replace with drywall.
4. trim the cut edge pf paneling with chair rail.
5. Paint everything.
Robin @ Our Semi Organic Life says
this is a brillant idea!

That lamp is way too fun, but even better are those dancers! They have some serious skills!! I’ll have to work on my disco-I didn’t know I was doing it the wrong way!

Target has a really cute metal pillar candle holder that looks like that – except it is silver! I got it on clearance and I love it! I also like the light patterns it makes! Fun!

Ooh Clara would LOVE THAT! Awesome excursion idea. She thinks every animal is a doggie (even otters, haha) so it’s sure to be adorable.

This has probably been mentioned or asked before, but is it “politically correct” to have all the rooms in a home, have the same color inspiration,(hence the infamouns napkin) I ask because I’m a very new homeowner, and the colors are kinda all over the place, the kitchen and living match..but everything else is kinda doing its own thing, am I going in the wrong direction?
YoungHouseLove says
We always think houses with some sort of related palette look nice (they definitely don’t have to match but they shouldn’t clash) because they feel connected and cohesive in a way that a rainbow of crazy colored rooms may not. Just ask yourself if each room feels like you’re in the same house, of if you step into one and it feels weird and unattached. Hope it helps!

Bryanna S says
I don’t care what you have planned for the kitchen, you need to forget it now. You should paint the paneling the same color Donna has in her living room on that 70s show. Would go perfectly with the lamp/disco thing… also I don’t care what anyone says… that room was QUITE styin’ especially when you consider the popular colors of the time (you know, what you see in every other room on that show… )

Haha, it could be our little retro spaghetti eating paradise.

So cute! But I just HAD to share my “score. Of. The. Century” from yesterday. So as I was kind of looking around on eBay, minding my own business, I happened to do a search for “chevron” hoping to find a great little pillow or something in that fun pattern and I hit the friggin’ jackpot!!! A 5’3″X7’9″ black in white chevron rug for….wait for it…$79! WITH free shipping!!!! Oh. My. God!! I totally ran around doing a happy dance for the rest of the night. The seller has good reviews, so we’ll see. They even have a 10’X10 for only $199….I don’t know…I kind of think it would look amazing under Karl!!! Sorry, I just HAD to share it with you guys, is that weird, lol!

Ahh..saw your comment, checked it out and just bought the 7’10×10′. I’ve wanted a chevron rug for forever, but the size i needed is always so expensive! This is exactly what I wanted – so thanks for the tip!! :) I have never bought anything off of ebay, so Im a nervous wreck! haha. Here’s to hoping its not too good to be true!

I think I need one of these … at our house it’s a constant dance party anyway. With an amazing lamp like this one we could have the best. dance parties. ever.
Giulia says
I have the same lamp in turquoise…it sits next to our TV unit and casts a lovely light in the evening. Love it!
Are you keeping the paneling and painting it? We took our 1950s paneling down completely and re-dry walled the full family room…uffff so much work. I told my husband after it was all done and pretty – maybe we could have just painted the paneling? He gave me that ‘stare’…
I’m sure you’re kitchen will be lovely very soon.
YoungHouseLove says
We’re planning to paint it since we did that in our last house and liked the soft texture of the vertical lines. Sometimes I entertain the idea of filling the cracks with caulk first (for a seamless drywalled look) but we really didn’t mind them in our last place.

Please take this in the spirit that it was intended, with the most love for you guys, but I HATE when you show pics of your kitchen. It makes me sad. Seems so oppressive and unlike your sunny selves. You need some light in there pronto.
So, I think you should paint the kitchen this weekend! All in favor… :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha now worries. We’re working up to it, I promise! We’re also trying to figure out how not to poison the baby since we’ll probably need to use oil-based primer to block bleed through (so we might have to send her somewhere which is kind of a toughie since she nurses every two hours- yes still- and won’t take a bottle). We’ll get ‘er done sometime though. It probably kills us more than it kills you. But we’ve learned that projects like these are worth the wait. Patience my darling. Patience.

Love it as usual!!! I love EVERYTHING that ya’ll do! I really do!!!
Now .. Sherry, did you paint that round mirror white? or buy it like that? and if ya painted it, did you use just basic white glossy paint?
ALSO- off topic a bit (sorry) when you paint your picture frames do you use just basic white glossy or the creamy white?
thank you in advance!
love you both and Clara and Burger too!!
Have a wonderful weekend!
ginai((:
YoungHouseLove says
Yup I painted that mirror white with off the shelf “bright white” semi-gloss paint (it was once a crazy faux finished sponge painted gold color). When I sprayed frames I prefered thin and even coats of spray paint in white glossy Rustoleum (the kind with the trigger finger). Just do it outside because it’s super stinky! And if you have little ones you can use no-VOC paint with a brush like I do now. Hope it helps!

It has been fun watching you make your house your home…I appreciate you sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly. Regarding the paneling: Our first house had paneling…atrocious paneling. I was pregnant with our third child and on partial bedrest and my husband was busy with that whole full-time job thing and two rambunctious boys. You described it correctly, however, when you describing “soul-sucking”…shuffling past that horrible paneling, feeling sorry for myself because I couldn’t do anything at all and worried about my baby…the paneling seemed to be the last straw. One day, I just couldn’t stand it any more and I searched and searched for a seam and oops, I pulled free a board. Well, lookey there…drywall that would need minimal patching was under the paneling…it was even painted a cool color. An hour later, I’d removed 12 feet of paneling and headed back to bed. My husband, the wise man, simply said, “So, I guess I’m taking the paneling down for you?” My point? It was easier to take it down that it would have been to paint over it…do you know what is behind it?
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, love it! The only issue is that the cabinets are hung in front of the paneling – and they’re staying. So we fear that if we pull it all off there will be this visible sliver of paneling that will still be seen from the side of the cabinets and it’ll just not be the clean & seamless look that we’re going for. We have no idea what’s behind it either (might not be drywall) but we’ll probably wait to do anything with the paneling until we create that huge doorway to the dining room from the side of the kitchen (which will definitely give us more info about what’s going on under it).

After seeing the painted paneled walls in your old house, I too, decided to try painting paneling. It took only one coat of primer and two coats of latex paint. Our walls were a solid pine plank that had been stained. The results were amazing. I had thought of removing the paneling, but really am glad I didn’t, because this was so cost effective, and I really like the “cottagey” look my room now has. Looking forward to watching your kitchen transform. You guys are incredible, I love all of your ideas. Clara’s huge smiles and giggles make my day!

Love the lamp & love it on the paneling with all the character. And let’s stop for just a sec. The light reminds you of disco. Disco was pop in the 70’s. So was paneling. Ok. It was still around in the 70’s. So to me the lamp & the paneling go hand in hand. Embrace it! ;) At least for now.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, it’s true. You’d think they’d look better together!

Sara says
Hey guys,
How come you’d paint over the paneling instead of just taking it down, repairing the drywall if need be to have unpaneled walls altogether?
YoungHouseLove says
You can scroll back through the comments for more info, but basically our paneling goes behind our cabinets (which are staying) and we’re not sure there’s drywall behind it. Also we liked the look of painted paneling at our last house. The seams create a sweet subtle texture.

i have the same lamp in yellow. it’s awesome!! i bought it for my son’s nursery and he loves staring up at the shadows cast on the ceiling and walls. i wanted to get one in every color but we are in the process of moving so bringing new items into the house would be frowned upon by the mister. maybe once we’re moved into the new place…
