As we mentioned on Monday, before we hopped on a plane yesterday, we tackled our bisque colored dishwasher. And let’s just say the stainless one is a crowd pleaser (we like it, but Clara loves it). We’ll get to that in a moment.
We had been telling ourselves that it would be better to do this once the new floors went in (so we didn’t accidentally trap it behind the new cork boards or something). But then we realized that was a dumb excuse because we could just slide it on top of a few cork planks so it would be the same height as the rest of the floor once it goes in. Plus if the new dishwasher box stayed in the office any longer we’d risk it becoming a permanent side table substitute in there. It does have a large surface area after all (so things tend to pile up on top of it)…
We have never installed a dishwasher. It freaked me out a little bit because it was plumbing + electrical + tight space. Not to mention that I didn’t want to ruin a $380 appliance in the process. But after watching a few videos on YouTube, I was feeling a bit more confident about it (this one and this one were particularly reassuring). So when Clara went down for a nap on Sunday we gave ourselves a little pep talk and dove in.
First up, we turned off the hot water supply and electricity to the dishwasher. Embarrassingly enough, this step alone took us a good 15 minutes because our breaker boxes (we have two) weren’t labelled correctly and it took us lots of trial and error (and trips to the basement while on our cell phones to communicate) to make sure I wasn’t going to electrocute myself.
With the water and power off, I unscrewed the access panel along the base of the old dishwasher. Prepare yourself for some less than clean floor photos. Sorry. (There’s been a lot of DIY action going on in here, so the old vinyl floors aren’t exactly pristine).
Here’s the view behind the panel. Looks like a party, right?
Using a wrench I unscrewed the water supply, keeping a rag handy to catch some leftover H20. This too took longer than expected because of the cramped space.
With the water supply off, my next step would’ve been detaching the drain hose from the disposal under the sink. I didn’t do this (yet) because I had already detached it under the dishwasher just because it was in the way of my wrench. And at this point I was trying to undo as little as possible just in case I needed to retreat (i.e. give up).
All of the plumbing was disconnected, so next up was electrical. The wiring is all encased in a little metal box that was removed pretty quickly with a little screwdriver action.
From there I just unscrewed the wire nuts and, just like that, I was done with the electrical parts of the old dishwasher.
Now I just had to focus on getting the dishwasher out of its home. First up, lowering the little adjustable feet so that it wasn’t so tight against the bottom of the countertop. Don’t mind the dinged up baseboard – we’re waiting to caulk/putty/touch that up until we install the new cork floors and add new quarter-round. Then it’ll all get gussied up.
Next I had to remove where it was screwed in. In most cases I think dishwashers are actually screwed into the underside of the counter. But ours was screwed into the cabinets on either side (maybe because we used to have granite counters?). I just popped off a little plastic plug and unscrewed away.
A shimmy and a shake later, and our bisque buddy was no longer clashing with our cabinets and counters. Oh, and even though these aren’t the new floors, I still pulled it out on a piece of cardboard for added protection and easier sliding around.
So we were left with an empty hole full of new dishwashery potential.
Before the new dishwasher could go in, though, I wanted to make sure to prepare for the new floor. So I roughly cut some pieces of our new cork and slid them in there so that the new dishwasher would sit at the height of the new floor, not the old one. Because if it sat behind the new floor boards it could make getting it out for repair or replacement very difficult (or impossible) down the line.
With the floor boards ready, out came the new energy efficient dishwasher (which we bought among a bunch of other on-sale appliances back in October).
It was at this point after reading the (very confusing) directions for the new dishwasher, that we realized that we needed to swipe a piece from the old one – a 90-degree elbow – to help route the water supply line into the dishwasher.
I’m not sure why these just don’t come in the box (I would’ve been super annoyed if I had had to go to the store just to buy one), but whatever. At least it gave me the opportunity to learn it’s WAY easier to work on a dishwasher when it’s pulled out and accessible on all sides. See – even the lighting for photos is better!
With the elbow attached, I could reattach the water supply line. Lucky for me, it was long enough to do this with the dishwasher still pulled out. Sure made maneuvering the wrench easier!
Here’s the point where I had to disconnect the old drain hose from the disposal and reattach the new one. Theoretically I could’ve just attached the old hose to the back of the dishwasher. But if one of my new connections were to leak, I wanted it to be the one under the sink (where I can see it) and not the one hidden in the back of my dishwasher.
Plumbing attached? Check. On to the electrical. I learned through this that I was missing a strain reliever on my wire, so I did have to run out to the store to grab one. It basically holds the wire in place at the dishwasher’s electrical box, removing any strain on the actual wire connections (since we don’t want those pulling apart!).
I attached the strain reliever, screwed the wire nuts back on to attach the wall wire to the dishwasher wire, and reattached the box cover. Then I held my breath as I went back down to the basement to turn the power back on and make sure my electrical work actually, well, worked.
Houston, we have liftoff.
I also turned the water back on and watched all my plumbing connections to make sure I didn’t have any leaks. Good thing I checked. I did have a small one around that 90-degree elbow. I had to detach the hot water supply, give the elbow another 360-degree spin and reattach everything. Then – after another leak check – I was good to attach this baby to the underside of our counters. Whew.
And just like that my friends (and by “just like that” I mean “three hours later”) – we had a new dishwasher! As Sherry mentioned in her post on Monday, it’s really nice to have something stainless on that side of the kitchen because it makes for some nice balance (the old fridge was almost right next to the old dishwasher, but our new arrangement makes for a better work triangle and looks better too).
And speaking of washing things, Clara got a hold of a paper towel while we were snapping these pics and went on a “wiping” spree. I don’t think she managed to wash any dishes but, well, you’ll see how much ground she covered…
Balance has finally been brought to our appliance triangle, and our dishwasher no longer looks dingy next to our white cabinets. Good stuff.
And the installation process wasn’t nearly as bad as I had prepped myself for. Sure, it did take a bit longer than I had hoped (though it did include one unplanned trip to get that strain reliever), but what project doesn’t?
Here’s the view from the office. You can’t really tell in this picture, but it’s also nice in person how the stainless finish plays off of the sink, faucet, and our new mercury glass pendant light.
And it’s worth mentioning that this has the same protective finish that keeps fingerprints off of it (more on that here). It’s very helpful in our household, since a certain someone’s cleaning techniques still leave a bit to be desired.
Functionally the dishwasher is pretty much the same as our old one. But I do love the added timer countdown on the front of the machine and the note that actually says “clean” when they’re clean (no more calling to each other across the house to ask if they’re dirty or not).
Oh, and you may have also noticed in these pictures that we’re sporting a new dish towel. It’s from Target, and we thought it was a fun addition. Clara agrees.
Who doesn’t love a little black and white chevron? Especially with soft penny tiles in the background to set it off.
Again, Clara’s on board with the decision. Can you tell someone recently learned to smile for the camera on command? “Can you show me your teeth?” has become a very handy phrase around here lately.
Has anyone else ever tackled a dishwasher installation? Did you have smooth sailing? Was there that obligatory unplanned trip to the hardware store? Did it take longer than you thought? Was there a tiny but correctable leak? Did you just learn how to smile on command?
Psst- To see what we did with the box that the dishwasher came in, check out Young House Life today.

I wish the former owners of our home had been as smart as you guys, putting the new floors under the dishwasher! Instead, they built 2″ deep stone floor around the dishwasher; we had to cut into the countertop to replace the dishwasher when it stopped working last year. (I love your blog! :)

What’s going on with the kitchen window..did you just put up frosted paper or something? I don’t remember that from before.

Oh no, there’s just secret book project stuff in the sunroom (which is through that window) so there’s a paper shade up to hide it. Haha.

It’s weird how much a difference a dishwasher can make. I LOVE it. I want your kitchen. All the stainless and white, sigh, it makes me tear up a little :) It looks amazing! And Clara is so darn adorable, and she has good instincts about wiping the kitchen down. I like it :) Congrats guys, it looks awesome-socks.

Great job on the kitchen, but the short “wiper” is the cutest part — she has really grown up!
I installed my own dishwasher, except for having an electrician put in a new outlet for it — my kitchen did not have a dishwasher and I created a spot for it when I re-jiggered the cabinets. Poor planning on my part, though; could not attach to the new countertops because of the way they are made. Seems to work fine three years later, though.
Have fun in Portland!

Hi, I love your blog! I just read this post about your new dishwasher and also previously read the one on green cleaning products. I have a question — how do you keep your glass-top stove clean? I also have a glass-topped stove and find it terribly hard to keep clean. I was thinking that you might have a good method and maybe it’s even eco-friendly & non-toxic??? Thanks in advance!
YoungHouseLove says
We just scrub it with those sponges that have a more textured side. We try to clean things up as soon as they happen so they don’t fester. I hear you can make a scrub out of baking soda if you really need some grit to scrub with, so maybe that helps?

Your kitchen is looking amazing! I’m sure you love having your new dishwasher. A little over a year ago, we upgraded our kitchen appliances all to stainless steel in our new house – and I couldn’t wait! It was rough looking at the old dingy appliances. We {cough, my husband, cough} installed the dishwasher, but the tabs that let you screw it under the counter broke off, so our dishwasher would come tumbling out, if both racks were pulled out. We had the LG, fully extended racks – where they come all the way out for easy loading/unloading. For several weeks we dealt with this and it wasn’t fun. The only solution he came up with was to fill it with expanding foam on top/sides with the long straw like hose to fit in the small space. Lets say, I hope we never have to remove that baby because it sure isn’t going to be fun!
Speaking of the boxes – my kids still love playing in large appliance boxes. I ordered 6 stools like the ones you have in your kitchen (because of you & your readers comments on how great they are – so a huge thank you!) for my husbands “man cave” that we’re ever so slowly in the process of making….Well the boxes they came in were great for my daughters talent show (which is this Friday) and here is one of the boxes all decorated up as the Barbie Box (her and a friend will be dancing to the song I’m a Barbie Girl). http://heathersmemoirs.blogspot.com/2012/02/happy-valentines-day.html The box is at the end of this post. My girls are both saying how they want to make sure the boxes come home after the talent show because they each have plans to play with them (ages 9 & 12).
Great Kitchen – love the triangle you’ve created! And I love/love/love the pendant over the kitchen sink!!!

Off topic, but I had to share…
I had a dream last night that I was your housesitter while you were away. The dream focused on the time when you returned. You barely said hi, and you both went into your room and flopped down on the bed and went to sleep. I stood in the kitchen wondering what to do next. Clara had been staying with John’s mom, so I came to the door of your room and asked you if you wanted me to go pick Clara up. John said yeah, just call her first to arrange it. I asked what her name was, and John told me it was Billie Jo Harrison. I went back to the kitchen and found a phone book. I was trying to look her up under ‘B,’ and John came out and gave me this how-stupid-can-you-be look and told me that her number was on the list of emergency numbers on the sticky note inside the folded $1000 bill that was sitting on the counter. Oh, right, where else would it be? :) By then, it was getting late, and I had to drive back to Michigan. I didn’t want to skip out on helping you guys, so I figured I’d go pick up Clara, bring her back, give her a bath, and get her to bed. Then I’d drive through the night back to Michigan. The end. :)
I hope your own housesitter is a lot less awkward than that. Happy Thursday!

LOL about the trip to the hardware store. My son installed a dishwasher at his house two weekends ago that required not one, not two, but THREE trips to the hardware store. And I inadvertently turned on the sink faucet while the dishwasher was in the ‘missing the drain hose that attaches to the sink plumbing’ stage and flooded under the sink.
My grandson (who I was trying to keep out of his papa’s way, he’s just a bit older than Clara) thought it was HILARIOUS. He announced as soon as his dad got back, “Mimi made a big mess!.” Gee, thanks kid.

Hey guys, the new dishwasher looks GREAT — I am such a huge fan of stainless! When I read that you got it on sale in October, thought I would throw in a project tip for other DIY-ers out there…if you buy on sale — ESPECIALLY if you don’t plan to install right away — make sure you’re clear on that store’s return policy should your new dishwasher turn out to be defective and you need a quick replacement. (Highly unlikely, but it does happen!) I spent a while working in a home improvement store, and while we were often willing to swap out a defective item, a lot of times the exact item was no longer readily available. Or sometimes, in the case of discontinued appliances, not available at all.
We always told people who were working on big projects and might let appliances sit for a while before installing to at least open up the box and confirm that the right color was in there, and hook up it and test it out if they could to make sure everything worked okay. I know, with a dishwasher…very hard to do!
Just started reading your blog recently and I love it…we just bought a 1930 house and are working on renovations. :)

I had to do a dishwasher install last year (and by “I” I mean my sweet, sweet, boyfriend) when I bought my house and we were also “surprised” by finding we needed that elbow piece (why DON’T they come with the dishwasher???). Things went smoothly though after my run to Lowe’s and all is working well one year later.
Kitchen looks awesome too BTW!! Such a big difference!

A couple weeks ago, my fiance noticed our kitchen baseboards appeared to have water stains. We immediately thought our dishwasher was leaking and it turned out that it was. We don’t know how long it had been leaking unfortunately )we’ve been living here for 4 months), and since it was leaking from the back and not flowing out the front of the dishwasher, we had no idea until we actually eyed our baseboards (lucky for us that we caught it early – I would have never imagined to look at my baseboards on a daily basis!). My dad (who is my handyman) came over and fixed the dishwasher and it hasn’t leaked since. He recommended that we get a “water leak detector”. We bought one at Lowe’s for $8 and placed it behind our dishwasher on the ground. Now, we don’t have to worry about any leaks! Just a suggestion for you guys to put your mind at ease! I think it’s well worth the $8 and batteries every couple of years. The reassurance that it will alarm, even if we don’t see any water is such a relief!
Here’s the one we bought from Lowe’s! http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=117272-84862-BWD-HWA&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=1005609&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Hi YHL! first time commentor, avid reader for about 4 months now thanks to Pinterest. You guys are great! I purchased a home over 2 years ago and needed all new kitchen appliances…long story short, I have the same Frigidaire gallery dishwasher (in black) and the same stove (gas not electric, and black). so i guess it’s not the exact same…ANYWAYS, PLEASE READ THIS! I have a cheap Farberware Kitchen knife set, it said “handwash”. well, thinking the only harm would be dulling the blade and me not caring that much because they were cheap, I piled those bad boys in the dishwasher. Speed forward a year and a half later to when my dishwasher starts making very strange noises and I hear NO water swishy swooshy-ing around. No surprise, it’s a one year warranty. My super great appliance guy Carl came to the rescue,I needed a new motor (or something like that, it’s been a few months since this happened, oh right before christmas too)…he could fix it for $250 total. almost the price of a new dishwasher (i got mine on sale for $400 in 2009)…The culprit of the dishwasher’s demise? Cheap little silver plaques that say Farberware fell off the cheap handles of the knives and fell into the dishwasher and ruined the motor blades (which I guess are all plastic, no matter what brand dishwasher you buy). So, the dishwasher is great- works great…more of an operator error if you will.
so PLEASE take note, do NOT put the following little devils in your dishwasher!

I have that same dishwasher and a couple of things to look out for. The light that says clean is great except if you open the door the light doesn’t come back on so if you just take one thing out or open it for the steam to come out the light that says clean is useless. Also, there are two little plastic clips on the bottom each side that the wheels of the bottom rack slide over. Make sure those stay in place or your gasket will fall out, ask me how I know! Also if you have large plates like you do you might have to keep the top rack in the higher up position or the rotating water thingy will hit the tops of your plates. Other than that it’s nice and quiet compared to my old freight train dishwasher and seems to wash well. Oh another thing, it seals so tight it gets stinky in there if you don’t do dishes every day.

I believe in destiny… My hubby and I tackled our own dishwasher install this weekend, and used your step-by-step post and suggested videos more than the install manual that came with the dishwasher! The kitchen in our 1955 rambler had an 18″ dishwasher in a 24″ cabinet space…so weird and such a waste! Not to mention that the 18-incher was bisque, among our stainless fridge and microwave and black range. We successfully installed the dishwasher (in 5 hours, but STILL) and craigslist-ed the old one for 50 bones! Thanks for your awesome posts. You’re the only blog I’m “addicted to.”
Now the only appliance we have to upgrade is our black electric range to stainless gas. Got any advice on that? :)
