Dude, meet our disaster drawer. I know you guys already got a preview of him yesterday, but you know how a horror movie has that dun-dun-duuuuun sound effect? This drawer needs one too. It’s that bad. Like “what wild animal got in there and rooted around?” bad. So in the name of organization week (and general sanity) it was about time we got on it.
The issue is that we don’t have a medicine cabinet, thanks to the window in front of the sink, as demonstrated by this pic from our House Tour page. The drawer in front of the sink is actually a false drawer, so we can’t use that one for additional storage. Sure, we have the cabinet under the sink, but that’s where we put bigger stuff like the hairdryer and our travel toiletry bag, so it’s mainly all on this small skinny drawer to store every last little thing – like floss, toothpaste, contact stuff, medicine, deodorant, hair stuff, nail stuff, and all the other things that usually get shoved into a few drawers and maybe even a medicine cabinet or linen closet.
But I knew straightening up this drawer was possible. John and I are pretty minimalistic when it comes to stuff like this (for example, I have a small travel makeup bag with all of the makeup that I own in it – which is less than eight items – and I keep that in the car or my purse, so that doesn’t need space in the drawer). We also don’t wear perfume or cologne, so there’s no need to store that or any bath salts or scrubs (we’re shower people). In short: we don’t have that much stuff when you consider that this is a pile of all the medicine, tooth stuff, nail stuff, hair stuff, and general hygiene stuff in our entire house except for one pot of diaper cream in Clara’s room and a bottle of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner in the shower.
So we just had to figure out a way to wrangle it so it was functional (ie: so we could actually find what we were looking for). The first order of business was removing everything so we could see the bottom of the drawer again and take inventory of all the things we had. I went through everything and got rid of things like expired medication or empty bottles that somehow got shoved back into the mess.
Then I grabbed two divided boxes at TJ Maxx to the tune of $9. I think they’re meant for office supplies or jewelry, but they were the right height for the sink drawer and I knew the key to adding some order would be to segment things off and create zones to keep things from slipping all over the place every time the drawer slid open. Here’s what I came up with after I stuck those two containers in the drawer along with the wooden toothbrush/toothpaste box we had from a while back and filled them all up.
It was a tight fit, but everything that I took out (except for the expired medicine and empty containers) fit back in. And this time it makes sense! If you look closely, I tried to group things. For example, all my nail polish is together at the back right of the drawer, all of our razors are together at the front right of the drawer, all of our contacts are stored on the left side of the drawer, and all of our mouth related stuff is still in the toothpaste box (mouthwash, toothpaste, and toothbrushes and one pack of floss, while the extra floss is back near my nail polish). In the back left of the drawer is all of our medicine along with a box of my, uh, feminine products.
Some of those cubbies, like the three in the middle of this picture are just items that are grouped by owner. For example, the one on the left is my stuff (an extra concealer and mascara that came packaged as a set of two so I only put one in my travel makeup pouch, my hair-cutting scissors, a nail file, etc) while the middle cubby is where John’s hair stuff and razor and contact case live. That cubby is sort of his morning routine (although he doesn’t shave every morning – maybe just every three). The cubby to the right of that is also John’s shaving stuff (shaving cream and aftershave) – so putting them next to each other and keeping my stuff out of his cubbies will hopefully make it easier to keep up with this system (he won’t be messing with my areas and my stuff won’t be in the way of his).
Medication safety update: All the medication is in childproof containers and those razor blades snap into a protective case that Clara couldn’t unsnap on her own (at 23 months old, Clara can’t open non-childproof bottles or even tupperware containers) and we keep the door to our bedroom closed so she is never in there unattended (since Burger’s food is in that room and she likes to mess with it, haha). So there’s a no-Clara-in-the-bedroom rule unless we’re in there with her.
Here’s the other side of the drawer again, just because I thought for a shot of random bathroom stuff, this was kinda pretty. Haha.
So yay! We finally got on that. I just hope it stays this way. It has lasted through one evening and one morning routine, so I have a fair amount of hope. I gave John a stern look and said “please respect the cubbies” and so far he has been awesome about it. But I’ll have to take a random photo in six months to see how this whole shebang really fares. You know I’ll keep it real and report back, whether it’s still looking good or somehow has exploded into chaos again.
The sad thing about getting on this project is that in doing it I noticed another task that I need to add to the list: painting these cabinets and drawers- both inside and out. See that dinged up looking lip? Now that things are nice and organized inside of the drawer I notice it even more. Why is it that one upgrade often just shines a big ol’ spotlight on other things that still need to be attended to? Oh well. Someday I’ll get on that.
Just for fun, I snapped a picture of the cabinets under the sink. I told you we were minimalists about this sort of stuff. Just an old box from John’s grandpa full of a few John things, our travel toiletry bag (the black thing in the middle) and a basket with a hairdryer, a brush, and a curling iron among some other random items in the back. But see those blue arrows? Those are other dings and smudges I noticed while cleaning up. Someday I’ll conquer them. Although probably not anytime soon if I’m being honest. Haha.
Until then I’ll just appreciate being able to check if we need more floss or razors at a glance while grabbing the deodorant without having to wrestle any other toiletries out of the way. It’s the little things.
We’ll be back tomorrow with a huge rundown of all the grooming & cleaning products that we use in an attempt to keep it simple (many of them multitask, so we don’t have to store ten million different bottles under the sink). What have you guys been organizing lately? Have you found things like dividers or cubbies to be helpful in instances where you have only one shallow area that needs to store a bunch of different things? Who’s tackling their bathroom stuff tonight? And is it weird that I brushed and flossed after this project? Staring at all that stuff somehow compelled me to end things like that – just to test out my storage system I guess. Haha.
Tirsa says
I’m a little envious of all your organization. I can’t/won’t/shouldn’t tackle mine at the moment. I have at least 5 junk drawers to organize and a full dresser to “move” – need to move all my stuff from one dresser to the other. Someday… In the meantime I’ll live vicariously through you. :-)

I bought plastic CD holders from Target (they look just like little baskets, I totally didn’t know that’s what they were until I got home and ripped the paper tag off of the front) and we use 8 of them in the closet. There’s one for makeup, little girls’ hair stuff, my hair stuff, nail polishes/files/removers, medicine, jewelry, and one that holds the annoyingly tiny bottle of baby lotions that I seem to have collected a million of. My brother went through a loving-origami phase a couple years ago so I got him to make me a bunch of little paper boxes that are about 2 inches x 2 inches that are perfect for holding necklaces… I am trying to decide what type of jewelry organizer to DIY that hangs on the wall, and then I will have another container to use for other things (picture me cackling with evil laughter right now).
We also bought a thing that hooks to the bottom of a shelf to make another shelf, and it holds a sleeve of diapers PERFECTLY.

In my household we are minimalists too! I love the drawer dividers – and I’d much rather have a drawer then a medicine cabinet!

I recently purged my makeup and I probably threw out a good 80% of it. I had a ton of makeup from when I was in college that was either way too old or way too skanky for me to still use.
I did however keep every single mascara because I have a problem. lol

I just organized our bathroom closet too, although since we don’t have a closet or medicine cabinet in the bathroom, ours is right outside in the hallway. I too made a cubby for the hubby (ha) and one for me. Works well, especially since he isn’t as neat and tidy as me and tends to just toss his stuff in his cube. I’m surprised I didn’t see any lotion or hair products for you Sherry, but perhaps that’ll be in tomorrow’s post. i heart organizing!

I didn’t read all the comments, but you have TONS more room under the sink. We use some of those clear plastic stackable drawers from Target for our “extras”. Just make sure you measure so they clear the pipes. I didn’t for the first ones I bought. Then your baskets and such can sit neatly on top.

Love that idea if we find we need more storage in the future!

hahahaha…I thought this was your kitchen drawer. I was so confused why all of those bathroom items were in your kitchen. Then I started reading and I was thinking “oh my, they really need storage in their bathroom so they don’t have to store things in the kitchen”.

I use a silverware tray for my bathroom drawer! Can’t beat .99 cents at Ikea :) There are also those little tilt out “drawers” you can get for under a sink. That might be a nice option if you find you need a bit more space.

I searched through the comments to see if had already been mentioned and it has, but I thought I would mention again just so you have another vote to add for “yes”! The Divacup is amazing. I was a bit hesitant before I tried it, but once I did, I would never go back. Ever. I don’t own a single other product now! It’s actually safer and more healthy for your body than traditional products that contain dioxins, bleach, and other harmful things — not to mention the risk of TSS!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Kristin! My mom had TSS as a child so I use organic cotton lady things (they’re from a local place called Ellwood Thompson and literally have nothing in them but cotton). Not brave enough to try a cup yet, but you never know!

I just bought one of these for our master bath – so nice for our tiny vanity – love the white porcelain, but I may personalize it if inspiration hits.http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60197640/
We keep our teeth stuff in the cup. I have a different version for the guest bath, that mounts the drinking glass and soap dish separately. There is no vanity for that one, and it’s super narrow, so it works really well.

It looks so much better, Nothing is more frustrating then searching in a seemingly bottomless drawer for something. I love that you guys use natural products ie toms. As for your feminine products you should look into a diva cup. It’s a much safer, healthier, green choice than tampons.

We have a master bathroom with very limited storage too and I hate cluttered countertops. We opted to put up two symmetrically hung, dainty white shelves on each side wall—just like your left and right walls that face inward toward the sink. Kinda like these, http://tinyurl.com/7ybpbc3, but solid wood with wooden supports. But they’re only for toothpaste, lotion, perfume—like top 5 items per person.
Then under the sink, I bought these for our bathroom and our kitchen and they rock! http://tinyurl.com/7volmm7

don’t count on the safety caps being so safe. when one of my daughters was two, during a playdate at my friend’s house she and my friend’s daughter managed to push a stepladder over and reach some medicine bottles that were stored on the way back of a tall dresser. they also managed to get one “child-safe” bottle open… all in a matter of minutes. end of story – my daughter tried out a zoloft. after calls to ems, poison control and the pharmacist to sort it all out, it was determined that she didn’t ingest nearly enough to be a danger and as the paramedic said, “you’ll just have a very chill kid for a few hours.” sort of funny now, 12 years later but seriously, check out the kid-gear catalogues and get a medicine safe and store it high up out of clara’s reach in your closet.
YoungHouseLove says
Yikes! That’s very scary! Thanks for the warning. We definitely don’t count on them being child safe, we just don’t have her in that room without us (we always keep the door closed and she’s supervised somewhere else in our house all day long, since Burger’s food is in there and she loves to mess with it).

Two people, one drawer…and it all fits. I’m speechless. I have so much stuff that we can’t even share a bathroom – we each have our own. I tell people that the secret to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms. He cleans his mess (disgusting floor) and I clean mine (products everywhere). I have 4 shelves crammed full, under the sink is overflowing, and the top of the sink always has some products laying around. That’s not even counting the “back-up” I have in the hallway closet. Even if I scaled back to my bare minimum I still don’t think it would fit in that one drawer you two share. Oh how I wish to be a natural beauty like you! Now excuse me while I go see what I can throw out in my bathroom.

I’m skipping the bathroom (only storage in there is a tiny medicine cabinet) but last night I rearranged our kitchen! We have the most ridiculous cupboard arrangement. For example… the two-door cupboard over in the stove area is in the corner and mostly over the counter so you can’t stand in front of it. (Normally corner cabinets face out at a 45° angle.) The right side door opens in your face and you have to crane around it to get into the cupboard. It just gets worse from there. I actually rated the corner cabinet #2 of 4 for accessibility.
I pulled everything out of four cabinets & cupboards and moved all of the most-used items into the most accessible cupboards. I had to sacrifice my tea shelf (in the best cupboard!) but if it keeps my husband from leaving the clean tupperware and pots on the counter because they’re “too hard to put away” then it’ll be worth it.
Next I need a plan to address his habits regarding empty milk jugs and cereal boxes…

Sounds awesome! Congrats Ruth!

Cool! I know that you know that you know, with all these comments about the medicine being low.. Two of my children who knew our room/bathroom was off limits over the years have gotten into our drawers. One ate some flouride toothpaste. The other had hydrocortizone (sp?) cream smeared all over himself and the drawer. Super scary when you can’t figure out if they ate it, etc. This was at around 2 years old. My youngest scaled the kitchen cabinets in about 15 seconds and retrieved the children’s vitamins which she opened, safety cap and all. They are super smart and seem to get things open easier than an adult! Those are the only horror stories I have, but scary enough. Clara is right about that same age and it only takes a few seconds. I need to go through a few of our collection drawers too. Thanks for the reminder!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tips Laurie! We have a door guard on the closed bedroom door so Clara can’t even get in there, but we have heard about a lockbox you can order that only adults can get into (which can be kept down low without any worry) so we might look into that for sure! Two people have really recommended it highly, in case you’re interested!

Luckily, we have a double vanity in our bathroom, with three drawers separating the two sinks. The top drawer holds our toothpaste/brush as well as a little dish where I put my watch and rings at night. The middle drawer is his and the bottom drawer is mine, and they’re both deep enough that all of our products are able to stand up (except for my toner, which is freakishly tall and just throws off my whole system), so that helps with the organization. I have more nail polishes than I care to admit, even after cleaning out all the old/gross ones a couple months ago (as seen here). I’ve acquired, um, three more since then. I can’t help myself! Good job organizing your drawer – I love the dividers!

I love modular trays for organizing! I keep my jewelry in a drawer in stackable modular trays like these ones: http://bit.ly/InSuZi
Easy to get to and easy to toss things into with minimal effort. (I’m super lazy when it comes to that stuff.)
I also have LOADS more make-up than you, so I sort it into two of these babies and have them stored in a cabinet: http://bit.ly/IrSXbQ
One is solely for eyeshadow, separated by color types (white/peach/pales, browns, pink/purples, blue/greens/blacks, primers/liners) and the other for everything else (foundation/blush, lip stuff, mascara/lash curler, extra brushes/etc).
And then I have a soft case for hair accessories and brushes/combs and an open top box thing to drop my dryer, hand mirror, and flat iron into. I just haven’t figured out how to organize all my bottles of product (hairspray, hair serums, face wash, lotion, etc) in a manageable yet.
Umm. Yeah. I’m not nearly as minimal as you guys, haha. You’re rather more gorgeous than I am though, Sherry. You need less assistance in the face department. ;)

I know you’ve already addressed the meds/Clara issue (and I agree!) but wanted to give you a tip! I never had a high cabinet for ours, so I bought a little locking security box for our rarely used meds (kinda like this: http://www.amazon.com/MMF-Industries-Fire-Retardant-Security-2216140BP04/dp/B0013FBVN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335910062&sr=8-1) It can be safely stowed away in a low cabinet and you don’t have to worry about anyone getting into it, even older kid guests. I’m a daily reader but I usually don’t read the comments section. However, I had to read today to see if anyone is as ridiculous as me and wanting to recommend switching sides. I’m shocked that I’m the only one that wants to make this suggestion. I’m thinking everything on the left should be closer to the sink and everything on the right doesn’t necessarily need close sink access. Then once they are switched I would swap out the razors with the saline solution etc…
The way you have it is still fabulous and surpasses my bathroom drawers by miles. My comment isn’t meant to be negative only just a perspective on my bizarre thought process.

Love the organized drawer… you’ve inspired me to tackle mine this weekend.
Just a thought.. is it safe to keep your makeup in the car? I know you said you don’t have much, but especially the organic tinted moisturizer (I use it, love it too), should not be exposed to extreme temperatures. It can lead to bacteria growth and cause infections…
YoungHouseLove says
Oh I don’t keep that in the car (it’s in the drawer since I rarely use it – just for special occasions). All that’s in the car are things like bronzer, blush, eye shadow, etc. I’ve used the same method for the last 5 years and haven’t had an issue (we do park in the shade of our carport). Hope it helps!

I’m curious to read tomorrow’s post. I’m glad/envious Tom’s toothpaste and deodorant work for you. Our attempt at using those products a few years ago left us stinky as we sat in the dentist chair having cavities filled. We had to switch back to Crest and toxic deodorant.

I admire your restraint! I had a beauty blog for 5 years, so the sheer volume of both purchased products and press samples necessitated the appropriation of an entire linen closet for storage. Even after wrapping up the blog and moving most of my life to Hawaii, I still have a ton of stuff! (Though, to be fair, living here requires a whole shelf of sun products alone…spray sunscreen? Lotion? Oil-free for face? One with a little shimmer for beach parties? SPF 15 oil for shiny legs? OPTIONS. I MUST HAVE THEM. Bwahaha.)
John is just as bad, he hoards free floss from the dentist and must have Costco-sized razor blade refills and several varieties of hair product and deodorant available at all times. We’re lucky we have a full-size closet in our bathroom for all these goodies. I have major fears about moving and losing that little amenity!
