Remember the West Elm duvet cover that we ordered on sale last week? It’s here!
Oh, I guess it would make more sense to show it in our space now:
Of course we’ll be adding in some bolder accent pillows down the road, but we love it. It’s a smidge greener than we expected, but it actually reminds us of the bold blue-green color that we used to paint the back of our built-ins. We filled it with an über-cushy king sized Ikea comforter (we think it’s this one, but we’re not 100% sure since there are so many). And can I just say that we’re so glad we didn’t try to make do with a skimpy full/queen duvet cover for our queen sized bed anymore. The extra fabric means no one has an arm or a leg hanging out in the cold anymore.
And we’re not the only ones who love the new bedding:
Don’t mind the chihuahua foot nibbling that’s going on. It happens a lot. The guy grooms himself like a cat. Here he is looking a bit more presentable:
Alhough most of the time you’ll find Burger looking more like this: buried beneath the covers.
And with the new duvet in place, we’re now itching to paint the walls. We realize that the color of the duvet is reading a bunch of different ways in these pics, but this one’s probably the closest to being accurate. It’s definitely a sort of bold teal color.
We’re currently favoring these swatches (since we don’t want the walls to be the same bold hue as the duvet since that could be a bit much). But we definitely want something darker and smokier than we’re used to. You know, so Ed the bed really pops (along with the sweet crown molding we inherited in this room).
We don’t have a clear winner yet but we’re getting there (we used to have about 15 swatches taped up there, but we’re slowly narrowing them down). Oh and we also considered picking up the goldy-yellow tones in the duvet cover on the walls instead, but decided that we both prefer a cool-ish gray-blue-green shade for our sleeping space over a warm yellowy-gold one. Here’s hoping we get around to making a final decision and painting that huge room sometime soon. Yes, that’s me trying to rally my own troops and get up the energy to tackle the biggest bedroom that we’ve ever painted (14 x 14′ is straight up palatial by our standards).
Did anyone else get their West Elm after-sale order yet? We were surprised at how fast it arrived.

Hi Beth,
here in germany we paint over wallpaper all the time. In fact, it is very rare to see any wall without wallpaper, as most landlords require completely wallpapered walls when you move out.
However, you cannot paint over every wallpaper. Try to find out what type you have and if painting is possible. Good luck!
And for the duvet, it looks great! We recently redid our bedroom after reading tons of tips on YHL and elsewhere, and we love it!

I really like this bedspread and the color you painted your selves. It makes me want to bring out my old teal drapes from the linen closet. You’re growing beautiful space is going to make me do it eventually, I can tell.
Quick question. I got a bedspread for Christmas as well but I still have mine in the plastic. Did you wash it or take it to the dry cleaners before puting it on your bed? I may just be a germ wierdo, but I can’t decide if I feel comfortable sleeping under the bedspread before its washed. What’s your rule of thumb?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Amber,
We wash it first, just to soften it up and clean it and all that jazz.

Love It!
And the paint color on the back of the built-ins is beyond fabulous. Love.
You guys are a little too productive though. Making me feel like a slacker.
carolinaheartstrings says
What about the wall above your bed just a shade or two darker then the other walls. Same color/hue just a bit darker to really accent the comforter and give drama. By the way. Loved Clara sitting under the covers. Too cute!
Sarah says
Miss Clara is a DOLL!
mary W. says
It looks beautiful and love the teal contrast on the white bedframe too! Have you thought about a grayer shade for the walls completely? Did you see the galveston gray in the West Elm Ben colors? I think it might be spectacular with the combo! I’m sure whatever you choose will be magic!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for all the accent wall and paint color ideas everyone! We’ll definitely post about where we end up!

I love the comforter. We did gray on our walls and are currently looking for a bold duvet (West Elm Carved Circles is the current favorite). Part of me wants to maintain a serene spa feel, so I’m struggling with how to blend the two moods.
But seriously, Clara is beyond adorable. Such a beautiful, expressive face. With her enthusiasm over the bed and comforter, it looks like she may have already caught the decorating bug.
JLP says
Sherry – I am wondering something that is totally not design related! BUT, i know clara is a really good sleeper, and i am wondering if you ever let her cry it out or fuss it out? I have a three month old who is not a good sleeper, so I was just trynig to get some advice! I think I need to let her cry, but it tears me apart! Any advice would be soooo appreciated!!
P.S. Love your room, and where you’re going with the whole house! I really cannot wait to see more of what you guys are thinking!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey JLP,
Before around 5 months old we never let Clara cry or fuss at all if we could help it. We’d rock her and sing to her and walk around holding her – anything to keep her happy. But around 5 months or so she started fighting sleep during the day (she didn’t want to nap at all, and staying up for 12 straight hours, even while sleeping really well at night, made her a very crabby baby in the afternoon). So we started putting her in her crib for just a minute or two even if she was fussing. The crazy thing is she usually went: “wah, wah, zzzzzzzz” as soon as we put her in there, so now we don’t let her fuss in her crib for more than a few minutes, but we have learned that sometimes she’s just a spirited girl who likes to complain for a second before passing out for a daytime nap. It’s the craziest thing! Maybe when your little one is a bit older you can try letting her fuss just a bit and standing next to her crib to assure her and hopefully help her off to sleep? There are lots of thoughts and methods on the subject so hopefully you can find something that works for ya!

@Kim, I have had that same Valspar/Olympic issue at Lowe’s. Lowe’s will color match anything (competitors’ paint, fabric, your hair, etc.) but they get real freaked if you ask to use a valspar color with Olympic paint and vice versa. They also never want to match Farrow-Ball paints at my Lowe’s too.
Lani says
Love it! And love your paint choices….this may be a shot in the dark…but I’m going to guess that those Martha colors are either Rainwater, Tidewater, and/or Milk Pail. I only guess because those have been taped up on my dining room wall forever so I’ve been staring at those colors every day!! I’m def leaning towards the Rainwater…I just love it!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lani,
Yup! That’s Rainwater & Tidewater. So pretty.

i love all you guys do!

The bookshelves look amazing. I am in love with the contrast of the color against the white and all your items inside. you did an awesome job!
Serina says
Hey y’all!
Could you let me know what the names of the darkest (top) and middle paint colors are, please? I painted my bedroom Martha Stewart’s Araucana Sage expecting it to have more of the grayish sage tones, but instead it came out a little too airy and “fluffy?”
You guys are doing such a great job so far!!!!
Thank you!
Serina says
… on the swatch with the three paint colors… oops!

Hey Serina,
Those are Valspar’s Carolina Inn Club Aqua and Lyndhurst Jade. Hope it helps!

Love the new duvet! I never thought of buying a bigger size to make it more full/ stop fighting over covers!
candace @ thecandace.com says
I love that bedspread – so bold but classy!! I’ll be interested to see what color of paint you go with for the walls and see how it all pulls together.
Ayelet says
Love the new duvet! I love any colors in the blue green category–teal, aqua, etc. If it were my choice to make, I’d probably select the larger swatch second from the bottom. As it reads on my screen, it seems more blue than the swatches above it, and it’s not too dark or too light.
PS – A queen sized mattress is 60×80, while a double is only 53×75 (the same length as a twin). I’m only 5’3″ and I still had problems with by toes touching the end of the bed when we slept on a double bed while visiting family over the holidays. In fact, when we had to sleep in a twin bed one night on the same trip, it seemed like less of an adjustment to go from the double to the twin, than from our queen to the double.
Tim says
Check out Restoration Hardware’s Silver Sage for your wall color. I think it might go well with your duvet.

I dont know if you picked up a paint swatch from Home Depot called “Contemplation,” but we just painted our bathroom that color last week and I absolutely love it. It’s the perfect mix of blue/gray/green that I was going for. The swatch was located in the display area for their paint & primer-in-one line at Home DePot. Hope this helps!

Fabric softener works really well for taking down wallpaper. Spray it on and peel it off :)

Looks great! Do you like your ikea comforter? I just ordered one from Target, but realized they’re a steal at Ikea… just wondering your thoughts :)

Hey Mindy,
So far (after one night of use, haha) we LOVE IT! So fluffy and plush! Now when Burger is hiding under it we don’t always see him since it’s so floofy to begin with. Haha.

Looks great!
I ordered a West Elm duvet cover back in September (Clover, which is no longer available), but it didn’t arrive until November because it kept getting backordered. I complained to their customer support about the wait but they weren’t helpful, so I filled out a survey with my grievances and someone actually called me and offered a 20% discount if it ever came in. Wow! It did come in, finally, but I too saw a difference in the actual color versus the picture on the website. It was a little darker/greener than I was expecting.
Oh well. At least I have it now!

We just bought a new bed set (http://www.target.com/Springmaid-Laran-Aqua-Comforter-Set/dp/B003913KPE/ref=sc_qi_detaillink) as well and are having lots of issues finding the perfect paint color as well. Our bed is Tiffany’s blue with green, white and magneta!
GL finding the right color. They’re all beautiful.
Sophie says
Love this duvet and love Ed!
For the walls, I prefer the greener tones, and especially the sage green one called “faded silk”
The bottom ones seem to me too similar to the color you had in your “Skipper” bedroom.
Monica says
So the comments about Clara are unanimous…just adorable. She appears to be such a happy baby. And Burger is always precious.
LOVE the color choices…though I’m liking that center Valspar color or that top square sample. A little more green…a little more moody…maybe even a little sexier than the MS samples.
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
I know you guys love the blue greens but have you thought about maybe a slate grey on the walls? I think it would look gorgeous and would make the color pops take center stage (and you could very easily swap the colors for others easily if you change your minds). Just a thought!
Here’s our smokey-ish bedroom palette of silvery grey, smokey purple, and hazey blue

It was inspired by one of your moodboards from I think Valentines week last year or maybe wedding week. Thanks!!

Love the comforter and your decision for a cool greeny-gray paint will be lovely. My favorite greeny gray paint is Porter Paint’s Marsh Weed. I get the best compliments on it. Lowe’s has a brand (can’t remember which one without the color chip though) that has an almost identical Marsh Weed color called Cattail.
Leanne says
I’m loving the second swatch from the top. what color is that? or maybe I should search the other comments for it…either way. I’ll find it!
Leanne says
oh, it’s almost the same as rainwater, but Martha. thanks!

We are actually in the middle of trying to choose a soft gray color for our living room/dining room/kitchen (which all run together). We’re leaning towards Benjamin Moore’s Light Pewter but I was intrigued by your mention of painting your new living room a “soft silvery gray paint”. Have you chosen a color of gray yet? If so, please share!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Melissa,
Nope, we haven’t settled on a color yet but we’ll blog about it when we do!

That’s one cute little girl!
I didn’t order anything from West Elm, but I did order an after-Christmas sale item from CB2 and got it late last week. So speedy – and it was a piece of furniture, even!
We so should have gotten a king sized comforter/duvet for our queen. Doh. Lesson learned. We still have the arm-hanging-out-syndrome.
Erin says
Have you considered doing a wall color that just complements the duvet? Like navy or black or something bold like that? That may not be your style but with these swatches I see the ‘old house look’ exactly and I thought you wanted to get away from that a little…
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Erin,
We thought about dark colors but later ruled them out (see more info in a previous comment on that subject by scrolling back). Hope it helps!

Hey Sherry,
On an unrelated-to-this-post note, what kind of prenatal vitamins did you use? I assume organic ones, since that seems to be your style. I’ve been googling “organic prenatal vitamins” and have gotten a lot of results. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Jennifer B.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jennifer,
Oh man I can’t remember, but I got them from Whole Foods and they were organic and had added DHA (the plant based kind) which is supposed to help with things like fetal brain development. Hope it helps!

So far my fave is the bottom swatch, maybe Tidwater?? I love Martha’s colors! I saved a swatch from 2005 (before I even owned a house) of hers and finally got to use it in the living room and dining room of our new house! It was like a dream come true finally seeing this color I had been in love with for so long all over my walls! Its a limey-green which just happens to be really “in” right now, so finding accessories has been easy! I love the direction you’re going! I think some bold hues can really show off that you are a young energetic couple! My last house was beige on beige and while it looked nice and pottery barn, it didn’t reflect “us”! :) I LOVED your dragonfly color and this new duvet!! Quick question, how do you get those BIG martha sample chips? I think lowes carries her now, but all they seem to have in Virginia Beach is the tiny chips…
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sarah,
Ours are just from Home Depot (they only seem to come in those big swatches around here).

Got a nice wake-up email this morning that my cover shipped and will be here Monday! I’m almost jealous of all the queen bed folks having a king duvet because I’ve always known if we had a queen that is what we’d do. We have a king bed so it’s not an option, but I’ve learned to avoid eye contact with how the duvet does NOT hang down the sides enough to cover things. Sort of makes me twitchy though.
S says
I love that duvet! We almost bought it but instead went with the Cherry-Blossom cover. I think a grayish-green (dusty green?) paint would look really lovely on the walls, but I’m also recently obsessed with any variation of gray for walls.
PS – Our fur baby always nibbles on his feet too!

Love the new linen and I can’t get enough of young Miss Clara!

I like the second from the top shade.
Not too soft, not too vivid, so that it doesn’t compete with the comforter pattern.
It also seems subtly warm.

ok, so after I read your post about the Duvet that I had also been eyeing. I went and ordered one right away. I got the best deal! They were offering an additional 20% Off the $49.99 sale price which took off $10 and then I had 25 design dollars which applies as a credit to my West Elm card which when you add it all up and take off the discounts, I got it for $14.99 minus taxes and shipping. AAAAMAAAZING!!!

I like the new duvet. At my house, we also decided to reduce nighttime blanket wars by getting a king duvet and it has really helped. I can’t say we *never* fight over blankets anymore, but we do so with less frequency. : )
Also, really digging the painted built-ins. You guys picked a great color and did a great job!
Annalea says
I like the blue-green-gray idea. :o) Can’t wait to see what you guys pick!
Here’s a thought for you: re-do the fan. Nix the light kit, (you can get a simple cover plate to go in its place), paint the body & blades (didn’t you talk about oil-rubbed bronze hardware? and you could have fun with the blade color).
Having a fan in a room is a really nice thing when you don’t have A/C (do you?), but those light kits give me a headache. (Have you tried turning on the fan with the lights on? It’s postivitely migrane-inducing.) It took me a full minute to figure out those horizontal lines on the wall were the shadows of Ed’s canopy frame, thrown by the fan lights. Instead, put some torchiere lamps in the corner, or uplighting on the walls. Or something. A couple of lamps would be a good interim fix while you’re figuring out what to do with the rest of the room, but you wouldn’t have to use that harsh direct light from the fan.
So, there’s some food for thought. Whatever you choose, I look forward to seeing it.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Annalea,
Thanks for the ideas! We prefer to use high quality table fans in ours and Clara’s bedroom (we do have AC as well) so we definitely plan on replacing that light kit & fan combo with something that better fits the space!
