Remember the West Elm duvet cover that we ordered on sale last week? It’s here!
Oh, I guess it would make more sense to show it in our space now:
Of course we’ll be adding in some bolder accent pillows down the road, but we love it. It’s a smidge greener than we expected, but it actually reminds us of the bold blue-green color that we used to paint the back of our built-ins. We filled it with an über-cushy king sized Ikea comforter (we think it’s this one, but we’re not 100% sure since there are so many). And can I just say that we’re so glad we didn’t try to make do with a skimpy full/queen duvet cover for our queen sized bed anymore. The extra fabric means no one has an arm or a leg hanging out in the cold anymore.
And we’re not the only ones who love the new bedding:
Don’t mind the chihuahua foot nibbling that’s going on. It happens a lot. The guy grooms himself like a cat. Here he is looking a bit more presentable:
Alhough most of the time you’ll find Burger looking more like this: buried beneath the covers.
And with the new duvet in place, we’re now itching to paint the walls. We realize that the color of the duvet is reading a bunch of different ways in these pics, but this one’s probably the closest to being accurate. It’s definitely a sort of bold teal color.
We’re currently favoring these swatches (since we don’t want the walls to be the same bold hue as the duvet since that could be a bit much). But we definitely want something darker and smokier than we’re used to. You know, so Ed the bed really pops (along with the sweet crown molding we inherited in this room).
We don’t have a clear winner yet but we’re getting there (we used to have about 15 swatches taped up there, but we’re slowly narrowing them down). Oh and we also considered picking up the goldy-yellow tones in the duvet cover on the walls instead, but decided that we both prefer a cool-ish gray-blue-green shade for our sleeping space over a warm yellowy-gold one. Here’s hoping we get around to making a final decision and painting that huge room sometime soon. Yes, that’s me trying to rally my own troops and get up the energy to tackle the biggest bedroom that we’ve ever painted (14 x 14′ is straight up palatial by our standards).
Did anyone else get their West Elm after-sale order yet? We were surprised at how fast it arrived.

I love that you guys are so patient answering the same questions over and over again! :)

Wow, you got yours crazy fast. I even ordered mine a few days before you and just got the confirmation email last night that it had been shipped. It must be because I live in po-dunk Wyoming :)
Enjoy your duvet, can’t wait to get mine!

Your bed looks great! We have a queen size as well, but I’ve been thinking of getting a king size comforter. When our dogs come lay in between us, they pull the covers off us!

Have you ever looked at Silver Sage in Restoration Hardware? Very pretty – you can get them to color match it!

I wanted to add in – another great color is CRYSTALLINE by Benjamin Moore – I’ve used it in a few spots in our house including our bedroom – you can see a halfway decent image in this link to our vestibule:

Very grey/blue/green.

Everything looks awesome, Youngsters!! Your new duvet seems to be the inspiration piece for your master bedroom design and color palette… is that the case or did you already have an overall design in mind for that room before you bought the duvet? You all are so great with mood boards and complete room redos that I’m curious to know how you’re approaching this room. Do you already have a vision of the finished product or are you just going to ponder colors and details as you go? I’ve seen your to-do lists so I know it must all be pretty overwhelming. Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Cara,
We just use something as a starting point and in this case we didn’t have a clue with the color palette for the big white bedroom until we saw that duvet. We liked it, so we ordered it and now were using it to inspire the wall color along with the art and the window treatments, etc. Our method is just to use one thing to influence the next choice and so on and so on. We just figure things out as we go! We do have one item (a napkin actually) that has inspired the vision for our entire house (we’re planning to post about it soon) so we did a little double check by looking at the napkin before ordering the duvet to make sure it would “work” with the colors on the napkin that have us inspired for the whole house. Happily they work really well together!

Oh I am so excited! I just ordered the same duvet last week! I live in Canada so I am having it shipped to a family member in the states who is then shipping it to me. It was on my christmas wish list, and when I didn’t get it – and saw the sale – I couldn’t wait.
I love that now I can see how you paint your space to compliment the colours of the duvet :) We just moved (but are renting and can’t paint) so I am waiting to do the bedroom until the bedding arrives.

I am loving your comforter. Gorgeous! :)
Theresa says
Hi there guys, would like more “unsolicited” advice ;-) I couldn’t help but throw in my thoughts…Do you a Sherwin Williams paint deck? The comforter is considered a “cool” color…check strip## 69 SW 6478 or strip #70 BG SW6484/85 or 86 a more saturated BG check strip #111 sw6772. Hope this helps rather than frustrate you ;-) T

I love the duvet! Very cute! And, I’m happy to learn that I’m not the only person with a Chihuahua who is obsessed with trimming her nails!
Becky says
I just need to put in my two bits. I think the more gray in the color the better. Your wall and duvet are going to be competing for attention if they are of similar color intensity. Just a thought! good luck :)

Just wanted to say that Clara is too cute!

Great colors! Good idea on going to a bigger size duvet since you have a queen bed. Smart move to pick the duvet first and work from there ahh so fun!!
Caroline says
Love the duvet! Your room is going to be so pretty! Do you think it would work in a house with light green (sage), gold & light yellows & terracotta accents? There’s not a trace of blue in the rest of the house, but this is so lovely I’ve been trying to talk myself into it!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! Totally. We say go for it!

Love to see things progressing in ‘real’ time!
A little off topic, but for the cover-stealing/king-size bed issue my ex and I had a solution that worked for us. 2 Full size comforters in matching duvet covers. Plus, mine was a little heavier because I get colder at night.
Worked great!
Leanne says
I’m wondering what your thoughts are on having an accent wall? I’m not suggesting this but more so just wondering where you guys stand on that. I have not been blessed with any decorating know how and have been trying to find the answer to this question! I think accent walls were in a while ago but are they still? Also, what about the 2-toned wall? Like if you have a built in shelf around the bottom half of a room? I understand that you might not even have time to look at these comments but I thought I’d at least throw the question out and see if I get an answer. Thanks so much!
P.S. I love the duvet cover!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Leanne,
We’ve seen accent walls done really well and done really poorly. In our case we thought about one and nixed it because the room has an odd shape (a nook in one side and the sink across from the bed) so we’ve decided that all one color will unify the room and hopefully minimize the strange shape of the room.

I really like where you’re going with your color scheme for the house. It’s all so fresh and new!

How do you get your comforter not to slide down inside the duvet?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lee,
West Elm duvets have ties inside for holding the comforter in place. Love them! They also sell clips at Bed Bath & Beyond.

I love the idea of getting a bigger comforter so it drapes…ours is SO small for our bed, i don’t like how it looks at all!
Hubs and I have a king-sized bed though, what would you suggest ordering for a duvet? Is a Cali-King sized bed wider? Do they even make duvets in Cali King size…I am not sure I have seen a lot of these options. Any help is appreciated!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lyndsay,
We actually have no idea. Maybe try googling around for measurements of bed sizes and duvets? Good luck!

Hey John and Sherry- Loving everything as usual- question: what company makes the swatch booklet you have laying on the bed?
And also, are there a couple of colors you would recommend for a very light grey/blue. I’m looking to find a color that I can use for both my living room and bedroom as they are separated by french doors at the new place I’ll be renting next month and I want a flow between the two. I just seem to find colors that are too silver or too baby blue. if you could offer a starting point that would be great.
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Megan,
That’s the free fold out brochure of Martha Stewart paint chips from Home Depot. Hope it helps! As for a light blue-gray, we love Quiet Moments by Benjamin Moore or Silver Sage by Restoration Hardware (both of which can be color matched). Hope it helps!

I would totally go with the bottom left swatch, its really similar to what we have in our living room and its so awesome!!

I love the duvet. My hubby and I will soon be changing out guest room into a room for our niece and the duvet its def. speaking to me.
Christina says
Love it! And, I really like all the colors that you’re debating! I agree that a cool color for the bedroom is much better than a bold one. You can use the bold goldy/yellowish color in some small decorative finishes — pillows, things on your nightstands (when you get them), etc.
melinda says
i can’t wait to see this room finished! i love the colors!
Laurel says
You didn’t ask, but I’ll offer up that I would go with a light version of the yellowy-bronzy color in the duvet. We have a blue-grey-green thing going in our bedroom now and it actually makes the room feel a little chillier than it is. I think you’ll need a lot of (natural?) texture to warm up the smoothness of the duvet and the edges in Ed, especially in winter.
ps…great Clara pic.
Stef says
I have a question that’s a bit off topic, but it is bed-related. There is a big window above our bed, and the bottom of the window is about 46″ from the floor. I’ve been looking for a new headboard with the assumption that it would look best if it wasn’t any higher than the bottom of the window (so the headboard wouldn’t block any of the window). Of course that limits choices a bit since many headboards are taller than 46″. Is my assumption right, or do you think a headboard that overlaps the window would look just as good? As always, thanks for your help – you have an exceptional eye for these sorts of things, and somehow I just don’t!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Stef,
We think you can work it either way! One below the window would be framed easily by the wall, but one that overlaps could look nice if you pull the bed out just a little from the window so the headboard has some breathing room and doesn’t look like a mistake. Maybe try using a piece of cardboard at a few different heights to signify different headboard options will help you visualize it? Good luck!

Lovely! I can’t wait to see how it looks with paint. Ed is such a dramatic bed, but his posters are kinda getting lost in the wall. He is really going to pop when you get the color.
I was just pondering… if I assigned a gender to my bed it would probably affect the way I “dressed” him. For example, I would lean toward more masculine colors and patterns and stay away from flowery prints or colors. Not that guys can’t wear pink or primroses… but you get what I mean.
Do you find that to be true or am I just odd???
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Vorpaks,
Hmm, that makes sense to us! I guess we hope Ed’s “outfit” doesn’t look too girly since it’s more leafy and nature-inspired than floral. Hope he’s not mad that we put him in that!

Just thought I would vote here. I like the darker blue color closest to the light switch and the green color at the very top of the taped swatches. Those color will really pop against white molding and Ed the Bed. By the way, I love your decision to move outside your comfort zone with bold saturated colors. I want to do the same in my house.
renee says
Looks great! Clara and Burger are so happy to be playing on the bed.
Liz says
We just ordered a new West Elm Duvet cover and curtains a few days ago. I can’t wait for them to arrive! P.S. I love the colors you are gravitating towards in this house.
Vorpaks says
And I forgot to mention… you have the cutest kids ever! Both the furry and the hairless ones. *grin*
bri@Me You and a Wiener says
Do you guys not mind the frito/foot smell that comes from our furry friends when laying in the same spot for a while on the bed? A reason I stopped letting our wiener dog on the bed it smelt like fritos all the time and my husband wasn’t having it.
Baths wont get rid of that smell guess it’s natural for them to smell like fritos and feet lol
YoungHouseLove says
Hahahaha that’s too funny! Burger is odorless, but we wonder if it’s his breed since he’s virtually hairless and bathes/grooms himself with his tongue like a cat. I had a golden retriever/ terrier growing upwho was smellier but we bathed him a lot. If Burger smelled like feet he might be banned from the bed though!

If you went with a golden color, look into BM’s golden tan color. I love it and find it warm but very soothing. It changes a lot in varying light.

Megan- a beautiful, perfect grey is “agreeable grey” by Sherwin Williams. The whole swatch is gorgeous. Its the perfect grey- not too blue, not too silver. It looks great with bone colored trim.

I like the colours at the bottom. I can’t believe how fast you’re getting into the painting!

I shop at lot of same places you do… i was wondering if you use mypoints.com?
It is a reward shopping kinda thing. So I am going to redo my backsplash in my kitchen and Im going to get the tile from Overstock (got the idea from you guys) but if you go to overstock thru mypoints then you get 10 points per dollar… and then you can cash those points for other gift cards.. Im cashing mine in for west elm.
im just saying.. might as well get the extra perks if you were going to shop online for stuff.
ps. i hope that didnt sound spammy

Hey guys, we just painted our bedroom and went with Behr Dusty Olive. It’s beautiful. Don’t look at it online…it looks nothing like that in person. It sounds like it might be what you guys are looking for. Happy decorating!!
Danielle says
I thought I would jump on the unsolicted advice train :) and throw in my two cents.
A few people have already mentioned bulky crown molding for your bedroom, but the shadow of the bed in the picture made me think of large rectangular moldings flanking the bed and around the room. You could keep the same color in the rectangles or a shade lighter or darker.
I am sure what ever you do, it will be fab.u.lous. I love reading your blog and I look forward to checking out everything you do to your new house. Keep up the great work!

I’m glad to read that your chihuahua grooms himself a lot. Ours does, too, and considering that he has three cat sisters, we were beginning to fear that he thinks he’s a cat. But maybe it’s just a chihuahua thing, after all.
The duvet looks really good.

I used Martha Stewart’s whetstone gray for the main living/dining/hallway area of our house and am really happy with it. It’s pretty light but worked well for us. Can’t be the quality for the price!

My very favorite gray-blue-green shades are Aganthus Green and Tea Light- both from Benjamin Moore. I have Tea Light in my house and I just love it. If I could I would paint all of my walls that color but I think it would be a bit much!
The duvet looks great- now you’ve got me inspired….

I have the Martha Stewart Rainwater in my kitchen and dining room, it is gorgeous. Such a soothing color. I find myself standing in there just staring at the wall. I’m rooting for it!

I actually dropped my jaw when I saw you post about ordering that duvet. I am OBSESSED with olive green/ turquoise color schemes. Of couse, I had to run right over to west elm and purchase it.
Isn’t it super difficult to find a good looking duvet that doesn’t break the bank?!
I look forward to seeing what you are going to do with window treatments. We have tan walls (color: Puppy Paws) in our room, and I’m pondering what we can do that will include blackout curtains/shades.

To Julie at Velvet and Shag Vintage, to keep my comforter inside the duvet cover, I wrap hair ties around each corner and then cover them over with a pretty ribbon that matches the duvet. It looks sweet and I’ve never had a problem with it slipping.
