Remember the West Elm duvet cover that we ordered on sale last week? It’s here!
Oh, I guess it would make more sense to show it in our space now:
Of course we’ll be adding in some bolder accent pillows down the road, but we love it. It’s a smidge greener than we expected, but it actually reminds us of the bold blue-green color that we used to paint the back of our built-ins. We filled it with an über-cushy king sized Ikea comforter (we think it’s this one, but we’re not 100% sure since there are so many). And can I just say that we’re so glad we didn’t try to make do with a skimpy full/queen duvet cover for our queen sized bed anymore. The extra fabric means no one has an arm or a leg hanging out in the cold anymore.
And we’re not the only ones who love the new bedding:
Don’t mind the chihuahua foot nibbling that’s going on. It happens a lot. The guy grooms himself like a cat. Here he is looking a bit more presentable:
Alhough most of the time you’ll find Burger looking more like this: buried beneath the covers.
And with the new duvet in place, we’re now itching to paint the walls. We realize that the color of the duvet is reading a bunch of different ways in these pics, but this one’s probably the closest to being accurate. It’s definitely a sort of bold teal color.
We’re currently favoring these swatches (since we don’t want the walls to be the same bold hue as the duvet since that could be a bit much). But we definitely want something darker and smokier than we’re used to. You know, so Ed the bed really pops (along with the sweet crown molding we inherited in this room).
We don’t have a clear winner yet but we’re getting there (we used to have about 15 swatches taped up there, but we’re slowly narrowing them down). Oh and we also considered picking up the goldy-yellow tones in the duvet cover on the walls instead, but decided that we both prefer a cool-ish gray-blue-green shade for our sleeping space over a warm yellowy-gold one. Here’s hoping we get around to making a final decision and painting that huge room sometime soon. Yes, that’s me trying to rally my own troops and get up the energy to tackle the biggest bedroom that we’ve ever painted (14 x 14′ is straight up palatial by our standards).
Did anyone else get their West Elm after-sale order yet? We were surprised at how fast it arrived.
Jennifer B. says
Thanks for the response about the prenatal vitamins. I’ll keep a look out!
Also, could you shoot a pic with a comparison to your old room’s color? They all look pretty similar to me. It’d be nice to see how your color preferences are different. :)

Once we pick a color we can take a picture of our old swatch on the wall for comparison if we can find it!

OK, I’m just now going back over the pictures of the bookcase. Did you use fabric or paper to cover the box sitting on the shelf above the squirrel? Was this some of the ‘Clara’ fabric that you’ve used in her picture backgrounds? Love the grey/green/blue colors by the way. I’m planning on doing some grey in rooms in our home this year and am getting all kinds of wonderful ideas!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Carol,
Yup, we DIYed those with extra Clara fabric. Just click the link at the end of the post for more info!

I ordered the duvet cover and Euro sham covers over the weekend. Can not wait to get it. Love the colors. I do hope thought it’s long enough, we have a King with a high Tempurpedic. I ordered the King, not that I really had any other options.
Amy S says
just finished up a sort of similar paint scheme in my room though I went went a grey quilt from west elm (the hubby hates duvets sadly). I would check out “peaceful” from lowes (its the creative ideas collection). you can sort of tell how it looks here, though much a little less smokely and a little more blue in person and the dark wall is much more teal and less hunter green: http://www.flickr.com/photos/amysparks/5311632296/

Whatever you decide will be good, but I am hoping you go deeper than the swatches appear. So exciting to watch this unfold.

The duvet looks great! As for your arms and legs hanging out in the cold, just wait until Clara grows a bit more and starts taking a hunk of room in your bed. We had to change everything over to king size. :D :D
SP says
To keep the comforter from sliding inside the duvet, you can use 4 safety pins and pin from the inside.

If anyone out there is looking for a nice greyish-green paint color try Grassland by Sherwin Williams. We have it in our master bedroom and it’s very calming and spa-like. Just FYI!

How fun!
You may have answered this (I’ll go skim the earlier comments) but are you guys going to put some sort of drapery on Ed the Bed or leave it like it is? It’s such a neat frame.

Hey Sarah,
As is, at least for a while. We love the modern clean lines he adds on his own.

First of all, congrats on the new house. Looking forward to see you work your magic on it. Love the photo of Clara on your bed. It just made me smile. Our little girl is a few months younger than her. Great job on the shelves, can’t wait to see the rest of the room!

Love the new duvet! I just ordered some West Elm sheets and am so excited to get them for so cheap!
I also really like the color scheme. Have you seen Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue? I used it in both our living room and bathroom (with different finishes) and it reads totally different but totally fabulous in both rooms. It’s a cool blue-green-gray, and changes with the light. You should check it out!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for all the color suggestions everyone! We’ll def try to check them all out!

John and Sherry,
I had been looking for new bedding for awhile to spruce up my room (already painted a greyish greenish color). Thanks for posting this gem! Mine will be delivered next week and I can’t wait to start spicing up the color scheme, which is basically green and off white right now. I think the turquoise (which I am obsessed with) will look great! Best of luck with your design.

Have you ever thought about an accent wall?
Sammy says
The new duvet really suits Ed! You were totally right about picking this size. It’s perfect!
Have you ever thought about painting wainscoting-like? As in, painting the lower third (or so) in a darker color (teal, aubergine, chocolate,…) and the rest in a lighter color (white, off-white,…) – or reverse. I did this in my bedroom (teal and white) and it really compliments my white IKEA-bed ;-)
Sammy
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sammy and Kelli,
We considered both options but since the room has that odd nook next to the bed and the sink across from the bed we think one solid color will hopefully minimize those things.

Question…I myself have this duvet. But I am in need of a box spring cover. Any suggestions? I have a platform bed but the box is visiable and is oh so ugly! what color would you use with this duvet? White? Tan? Would love to hear your suggestion.
Thanks!
Terri
YoungHouseLove says
You could use white or tan or chocolate brown or even a tone of gray or golden green that works with it. Maybe bring home paint swatches to see what you like and use them to select a cover in that color.

I love how the black/brown headboard(?) made the duvet colors seem to pop in the West Elm picture. Your bed frame would look amazing painted in a similar black/brown color!

Hi John and Sherry,
Just seeing all your colour swatches laid out reminded me of something a friend told me. My friend works for a company that manufactures the colour cards and swatches for the big paint companies. I mentioned to her that a colour I had seen on the card looked nothing like the colour on my windowsills, and I knew they were the same colour. She said that the brochure type colour cards are not as accurate, and that an individual card/swatch is always going to give you a better colour match.
I wonder whether you have come across this issue in the past? Perhaps the particular colour I was looking at was an extreme example, but on the swatch it was almost pure white, and on the brochure it was a brown/taupe colour!
Loving the new house – I’m jealous of how much space you have!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jacqui,
That’s a great tip! We always color match and judge the big swatch vs. the small ones in the book/brochure (since they’re so small and hard to judge). Maybe that’s why we haven’t had any mishaps?

Just had to comment on Burger’s foot licking. I’ve worked at a vet for 3+ years, and have 6 dogs of my own.
If you were to take him to the vet, and have a tape test done on between his toes, I’m willing to bet he has some yeast in between his toes. The majority of the time it is caused by a food allergy/sensitivity. Other symptoms are scratching, especially the ears, scratching their face(with feet or rubbing on the ground), or slightly droopy eyes. If you’d like I can recommend some great limited ingredient/hypoallergenic diets(although I’m sure you guys feed good food already). 3 of my dogs eat special diets because they are allergic to certain meats: chicken and beef, it really makes a difference in their comfort level.
A great home remedy is having him stand in a tub(or sink) with warm water and Epsom salt. The Epsom salt dries up the yeast so it dies, and isn’t chocked full of chemicals like the medication your vet would give you. One of my bosses(vet) found this home remedy for me when my girl Lilly was pregnant and I refused to apply lotions, and her feet were SO itchy.
If you have any questions, or want any more suggestions let me know, I’m happy to help!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Kristi,
Wow! Thanks for the info! Burger has a vet apt. next week so we’ll be sure to mention it. He loves to lick his body like a cat (his back, his arms, his feet, etc) and occasionally nibbles any and all of those parts (maybe once a week or so, we just assumed it was a dog’s way of “itching” things that he couldn’t itch with his paws). Burger’s already on Natural Balance (which the vet says is the cream of the crop) but we’ll definitely ask if they think he has any sensitivities to it. The good news is that he doesn’t seem to scratch his face or have slightly droopy eyes so here’s hoping he checks out ok.

Seriously? Clara could sell this bed. Or the duvet. Or both. I like the paint swatches you’ve narrowed it down to. Which reminds me, I stumbled across this site recently and instantly thought of you two: http://www.colourlovers.com Do you know about this? Check it out I think you’ll like it. It’s basically a user-created, color palette suggestion forum, complete with the RGB codes for the colors. Might be useful for other home renovators who haven’t amassed quite as large a selection of paint chips as you :)

I love the swatches and the direction you are going with this room! I especially like the more gray/blue choices on the bottom-I look forward to seeing what you decide!

So smart to order a king! We did that about a year after we were married and didn’t regret it for one day! Although now we want to upgrade our bed to a king too!
Belle says
I know it’s not in your master plan but what about going with the warm red brown tones of the fan and flooring in the room, rather than the dark liquorice of the chest/stool at the foot of the bed? They seem (in photos at least) to really make the new duvet really pop?
YoungHouseLove says
Well we’re planning to replace that fan and we have a penchant for cool serene colors over warm ones (especially in the bedroom) but we’ll have to see where we end up…

What are the colors that are in the trio (I believe from Lowe’s) in the top of your paint swatch picture? I have been in search of a sage green for my guest bedroom and those look like something I would like to take a closer look at. Most greens look too minty or limey to my taste. The square to the right doesn’t look too shabby either.
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Natalie,
The lightest one is Pirate Coast, the middle one is Carolina Inn Club Aqua, and the darkest one is Lyndhurst Jade (all by Valspar). Hope it helps!

Congrats on the new house! By the way, I love the color you chose for the backdrop of the build-ins and the effect it gives…
I am a designer-turn-copy editor (I could also be Sherry’s Bizarro — here’s for the talking nerdy part). I couldn’t bare to tell people what would be better for their homes. I will nevertheless try and venture an opinion… You were mentioning wanting to take risks and steer away a bit from your ‘safe’ color scheme of your first house. The swatches you have up in your bedroom look very close to your old bedroom, just a bit more green… no? Maybe it’s just my monitor… If we look at the new color scheme you gives put up, you could go with something in the line of the dark blue-gray you have in the 3rd spot on the first line. Depending on your liking and the time of day the sun hits your room, you could go with a slate gray or a warmer elephant gray. That would really accentuate the ‘milkiness’ of the bed and the trim. Plus, if you want to experiment with a dark color, the bedroom is the place to do it. If I understand your average day, you are mostly in there to sleep. A dark color on the wall and ceiling, by making the room appear smaller, makes a bedroom cozier. Especially one that size. You could even add some accent pillows, rugs or lamps in dark teal and bring in that nice living room accent color.
This is just my opinion and was said with all the kindness in the world. It is your house and I have enjoyed watching you making your first one yours and am looking forward to see what you do this time around.
Oh, and I almost forgot… Your Clara has the most adorable grin!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Tanya,
Thanks for the suggestion! Those swatches are actually darker than our last bedroom (and also more green as you mentioned). We plan to take a pic of the old bedroom swatch next to the new wall color (whichever one we choose) to show the difference if we can find that old swatch. We know it’s just so hard to trust your monitor and our still-learning-to-use-a-manual-camera skills. Haha. As for a dark wall color- we actually debated that idea for a while and decided that we wanted to go bold and rich with the duvet cover and things like the curtains and other accessories (art, pillows, maybe even some painted dressers) so we’re happy to let things other than the wall color demonstrate our bold new adventures in the amazing world of color! We did think about a smoky gray but we want to use gray tones in the dining room, office, den and possibly the sunroom so we didn’t want to go overboard by bringing it into the bedroom too…

Does Burger shed all over your bed? My family is ganging up on me to get a chihuahua, but I don’t want pet hair EVERYWHERE.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Michelle,
Burger is a short haired chi with about 50% of his body being hairless (his whole underside) so we think he’s a very rare case but he barely sheds (which is an added bonus, it’s nothing we knew when we adopted him). We sometimes see a short hair or two on my black shirts after I hold him, but never notice any shedding in bed or on our sofas, etc. Maybe because the color contrast of his hair isn’t very apparent? We know he’s an exception to the rule, but Burger is the perfect dog when it comes to not having to worry about hair or smell. We also don’t have to take him to the groomer/get his hair cut at all because it’s not long (can’t get long if he tries, it’s just perpetually short). Hope it helps!

Do you usually buy samples of the paint and try them first? Or do you just go for it from the swatches? I always try samples becaise of the differences with lighting. Just wondering how you handle it.

Hey Drew,
We’ve gotten to the point where we can usually go by our swatches alone, but we definitely recommend the sample route since it leaves less up to chance!

For anyone who ordered the Pressed Leaf Duvet and received a message from West Elm that they are not filling back orders, you can call the 1-888# and have them check store inventory. Our local store had 7 sitting on the shelf (duvet and shams)! Yippee!

I love the Tidewater by Martha Stewart, I think it will complement the bedding so well. Not too light, not too dark. I’m so in love with your new duvet. Gorgeous! Someone else asked the question I wanted to know- do you choose paint colors solely off the swatches or do you get samples? Paint colors are always such a hard choice for me- how do you know you’ve got the right color and that when the whole wall is covered it will really work?
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve gotten to the point where we can use swatches for the most part, but samples are a great choice since they take a bit of the guess work out of things! As for us, we just look at swatches in all times of day and night and compare them to each other and go with our gut. It’s only paint so we’ve been known to repaint if something doesn’t work out. But it usually does (she says as she knocks on wood).
