When we saw the amazing after Christmas sales at West Elm we had to spring for a new king sized duvet buddy for Ed the bed (get acquainted with Ed here and here). Even though Ed’s a queen sized bed, we wanted a king duvet cover because we thought it would drape a bit more over the sides (our old full/queen sized duvet cover was looking a little tight). Plus it’ll hopefully result in fewer sleep fights about who has more of the covers. So here’s what we got:
We love that it’s bright, bold, geometric, and full of energy. It just looks nice to wake up to. Plus it has a lot of the colors from our new house color scheme going on. And thanks to some huge holiday sales, the king sized duvet cover was marked down from $80 to $50:
Does anyone else love the red sale type as much as I do? I just get giddy when I click on something and those four little red letters (s-a-l-e) are there to greet me. And I’m greedy. So I googled around for a coupon code to knock those red numbers down to a little more.
It ended up being $42.49 after the discount I dug up (around $50 total with tax & delivery), which we’re pretty excited about since it’s king sized. For some reason that size always sounds like it should cost thirty gold bars or something- it’s just so regal and Henry The Eighth-esque. So while we wait the obligatory five-ish business days, we’ll be dreaming of Ed dressed in his new king-sized uniform.
Godspeed new duvet cover. Godspeed.

Love this. And, great idea on the king sized duvet. We will have to do that when we buy our next duvet. I am loving the new color scheme.

Thirty dead people & thirty gold bars :D You made my day again. Here’s to a happy, healthy, lovey New Year, and sleeping tight!

We always use king duvets on our queen bed as well. Nice to have the extra coverage, especially on cold Wisconsin winter nights!

I love having a king size duvet on our queen size bed. We tend to play tug of war with the blanket, so this works much better!
Crystal @ BeautifulHaven says
Great choice. It will look great with “Ed”.
Alison K says
I love a king duvet on a queen bed. I had the same problem you did — the queen never hangs off as much and with the king there is plenty of extra, etc. Plus I was able to get mine on clearance at Crate and Barrel so it a steal.
sara @ it's good to be queen says
ooooh, love it. love the saturated colors. and um, “godspeed, duvet” ha ha ha ha ha!!! that gave me a good smile this morning. :)

Love your new duvet! Obviously you will need to shop around for a new down comforter to fit inside that new duvet. Unless you have a different idea? We need a new down comforter so I am looking forward to hearing where you get your new one at a great deal.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Monica,
We’ll be grabbing a king sized insert from Ikea (they’re super cheap there) and then we can use the old full/queen duvet and insert in the future guest room so nothing goes to waste!

Beautiful outfit for Ed the Majestic! I am cracking up over the 30 gold bars image!
We do the same thing, in terms of getting King size coverings for our Queen size bed. But now I will be approaching it with a lot more respect!

Very excited for all of the new posts to come with the new house! Love it! Congrats on the big move and Happy New Year!
Question – I have never purchased a duvet before….and I am totally trigger shy about purchasing one that I’m in love with (Maybe Sienna or Painterly Paisley from Pottery Barn, so $$$, eeeee!). My comforter is a Full size, so thankfully PB has F/Q size combined, but otherwise, should I be looking at a Queen sized Duvet to get the drapey effect?! I would love some REAL advice!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Stephanie,
You want the duvet cover and the insert to be as close to the same size as possible so you don’t have a smaller insert floating around inside of a bigger duvet cover. So if you’re planning to stick with your full sized comforter as the insert, go with a full/queen duvet. But if you’re planning to start over and get a new insert/comforter/duvet in a queen size to go with the new queen sized duvet cover, that would give you more covers for that nice spill-over effect.

Funny, we just did the same thing! For years we’ve been fighting with a too-small full/queen down comforter. Then our dog tore a hole in it durning some too-rough doggie playtime, oops. Feathers hemorrhaging everywhere! We decided to go king & it has been so much nicer! It’s easier to make the bed, too, since we’re not fighting all night!
I tried to get the West Elm pintuck duvet in white, but they didn’t have it when I went to order so I had to buy Target’s (non-organic) doppleganger. Of course, now WE has it again! Oh well! I hope you (and Ed) enjoy your new duvet!
p.s. We totally call our Ikea furniture by their Swedish names. My favorite is Jokkmokk, our dining room table!
Leah @ Leah's House says
I love it! It inspires me to maybe break away from my all white bedding fetish!! maybe. Can’t wait to see it in your space.

I bought this same duvet cover for my queen in a king as well; it fits much nicer than our full/queen quilt we bought from WE. .(I was looking for something gender neutral that the hubs could live with as well.) If only I waited a week when they offered the additional 20% off. Doh! I was afraid it would sell out if I waited too long, which always seems to happen.
Now we’re in a painting dilemma. We’re planning on putting the house on the market, so we don’t want anything too taste specific. My husband wants to paint a small accent wall behind the bed that is similar to the blue-green in the duvet. Tough decision…
By the way, I squealed when I opened this post and saw that you had bought the same bedding. The hubs thinks I’m nuts, although he’s now used to hearing, “John and Sherry suggest…” In fact, we made a ‘quick’ stop at IKEA yesterday to pick up some shelves—which for some reason are difficult to find inexpensively elsewhere—when I popped off to my exasperated hubby that, “I bet John doesn’t rush Sherry through IKEA.” Okay, I’ll stop now. This is starting to sound stalker-ish. Looking forward to see what you two do with your bedroom so I can mooch some design ideas!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Julie B,
Ooh a teal accent wall behind the bed sounds lovely and dramatic- although if you’re putting your house on the market soon you might want to wait and do it in your future house since someone with a duvet that doesn’t match might not like it.

That is such a great deal! I almost don’t believe it. I also scored some great deals on Christmas home decor. But I didn’t think to shop for regular home decor after Christmas. I guess that’s why you guys are the professionals. You always know how to turn a great house around on a budget. Keep up the great work!
Kristy says
Good call on getting the king size. I always feel like the queen duvets are too small for a queen-sized bed. Once the insert is in there, it barely covers the mattress on the sides.
Can’t wait to see how it looks in the room!

Pretty! Are you keeping ED white, or going to paint it dark black/brown?

Ed’s definitely staying white for now!

Ordered! It’s so pretty and I can’t wait to have something different on the bed. We’ve had the same white with black paisley for ages now and I’m happy to have some color! Even my hubby who has no interest in decorating said “Get it, we need to change things up.” when I showed it to him. LOL Thanks guys! Now to find some cute shams… (gotta love how one purchase leads to another!)

I LOVE that this is so common haha! I am the blanket stealer in our relationship so on our las trip to Ikea we got a king sized blanket and duvet cover. So funny. But I love yours, I think we’ll have to order a new cover for the new year!

Beautiful! Now, please, please, please do a video and show me how to put a king size insert into a duvet cover. I have a PB king duvet in the bag for 6 months trying to get the nerve to iron it and put the quilt in. I’ve tried before with a queen and it was a disaster!
Mandi Smith says
Awesome! I ordered this same one two days ago:) I also ordered a King for our Queen sized bed.

Good call on the king-size blanket on the queen-size bed. I do the same thing, and really like how it drapes.
Maybe I’m missing something though – but isn’t this just the duvet cover? Do you already have the king sized comforter to go inside?

We have a king size duvet on a queen bed too! It has ended our cover wars. I love it! I don’t know how we survived with the smaller one. And I love the one that you guys got! It is so pretty! :)
Paula says
Love the duvet, very pretty. The background color is pretty close to the color we painted the walls in our bedroom. It is such a soothing color. We are purchasing a new mattress and would like to welcome it home with a new comforter or duvet. Good call on the king size hadn’t thought of that.
Kim says
I saw this post and had to snatch it up for my guest room. What a great price! The bed has been sitting duvet-less for about 3 months until I found one that was cute and affordable. This should really brighten up the room.
Paula says
I took a second look at your duvet on the West Elm site and it’s called spruce, so the color may be showing up different on my monitor. It look like a blueish color and that’s the color of our bedroom walls a blueish. Spruce sound like it might be more greenish, regardless it’s very pretty.
gerie says
This is beautiful! and just what the room needed, a bolder pattern.
A good choice at a great price, well done!
You two are such an inspiration, thanks.

I have a King sized comforter (not a duvet) on my bed too. The full/queen size is awful in my opinion- too small for a queen sized bed, because a full and queen size mattress are NOT the same thing! I don’t understand why they do that! To find a comforter that fits, you have to buy the king for a queen. :-( But I love the extra length it has on the sides of the bed, so I guess I can’t complain unless I’m talking about sheets…
sarah @ handbagsnpigtails says
This cracks me up. When I saw the new WE email in my inbox I clicked over there to check out their new bedding for Spring. As I was hunting around I thought “John & Sherry will be picking bedding soon…wonder what they’ll get?” Reason Im so interested is b/c Ive been wanting to makeover our master and then you guys mentioned you were going with colors I already have in there.
Anyways, I ordered the King Sized Duvet too(we own a queen sized bed). They were sold out of everything but twin and King. Im excited that we’ll have something that has enough to go around for both of us:) Our bed is white also and from Pier 1. Its the last big thing I bought before I quit my job there to be a SAHM. So Im really excited to see what you guys come up with for wall color, window treatments and accents.

Oh that’s going to look so nice on Ed!!! the white!! Really like it! and OMgoodness!! what a great sale! 50 for a king size duvet!! doing a little happy dance with you!! that’s a great deal for sure! Ready to see the pics when it comes!
Holly Austin says
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Seriously, if my hubby and I hadn’t just purchased a new one a couple months ago, I’d be eyeing this baby. I can’t wait to see what Ed looks like all dressed up :)
Minnesotamom says
Crazy! I almost bought that same duvet two days ago for our master bedroom! But I’m waiting to see the finished paint job first…because I initially wanted just white bedding, plus my bed is an orange-y oak, so I want to make sure not to have too many colors fighting with that. Fun to see that you guys have such “great taste,” though. ;)
Linda says
Just bought this duvet cover!! Love it!! This is my first duvet – how do I keep the inside comforter from slipping and sliding around? This is going on a king bed so I won’t get all that “drape on the side” look but I love it just the same!! Thanks guys!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Linda,
West Elm duvet covers usually have duvet ties inside which are strings that you can tie around the corners of the insert to keep it in place. They also sell clips that do the same thing at Bed Bath & Beyond. Hope it helps!

I almost bought that a couple days ago, but instead decided on the “parachute” duvet cover and will be making a fun graphic fabric-covered headboard and sewing some similar curtains. Yay to changing up bedrooms!

We have a king sized duvet for our queen bed also and it is divine! Almost got an insert from IKEA, but I found a Calvin Klein Khaki down alternative one at TJ Maxx for $60. It’s crazy plush! I went there last night and now they’re clearanced to $39. Great deal!
Love the new duvet! Can’t wait to see the pillows you choose for it. Happy new year!!
Kerri says
I love your duvet! I went a little crazy with the West Elm sale and ended up getting a throw, some storage containers, a new duvet and shams (the lovely yellow Organic Bloom pattern), and curtains!
Amy Button says
My husband and I got a king size comforter for our queen size bed last year. Best.decision.ever.
Amy says
Too funny…just last night I realized that the West Elm duvet I had my eye on (winter pine) was on sale and only available in king with no shams remaining. I briefly suggested getting a king to cover the bed better, but I dropped it.
We’re moving and I have a mental mood board going around that set, so I was bummed and moved on to finding something different. But after reading your post we decided we should just go for it! Thanks for the nudge! What a good example of the average person being paralyzed with indecision even though the idea is good!

LOVE the new duvet – exactly what I’ve been looking for!

Thanks!!

sherry, i had never heard that washing your clothes with vinegar takes away most of the impurities…. that’s really interesting. question…. your clothes/bedding doesn’t smell when it comes out of the dryer? vinegar is so strong smelling that is the one reason i’d be hesitant to try that

Nope, when they’re dry they’re odorless. Hope it helps!

I have had a West Elm duvet in my shopping cart for weeks now. The organic pin-tuck one. Unfortunately, it is not on sale and I keep putting off the purchase. I love it though. And since I just DIY’d a headboard yesterday and it looks awesome, it might be time to actually purchase! I want to get it in white. I’m so excited!! Then I think I might just accent it with these.

Hi guys, love the duvet you are getting! I’ve been wanting to go to a West Elm store for some time now, will definitely have to figure out what others stores I can check out while in Charlotte, any thoughts? We might take a trip there in the next few weeks.
I like the vintage bird duvet but I have a queen bed…do you think it would be way too big for a queen? I like the bedspread to hang lower than the top mattress. I think this duvet would be nice in the Spring as well.
Thanks!

Love this duvet. We just got it last week! One thing to consider though, while they show it with white on the site, the leaves are actually a cream and not true white.
