We promised pics of the old house all vacant and ready for the new owners so here they are (brought to you thanks to sitting in a booth at Panera to get WiFi since we can’t get that stuff hooked up at our new house until tomorrow). As for yesterday, we hoped to share more updates and info for you guys, but as anyone who has ever tried to coordinate a “domino” closing (when one person closes on your house, you wait for the funds to come through and attempt to close on a second house in the same day) knows, there’s usually nothing easy about it. The buyers of our house had an unexpected delay, as did we, which resulted in us not actually getting to close yesterday (thank goodness we did this morning). But the previous owners of our new house were so kind to pass along the keys to us anyway (since they knew we had nowhere to go and a truck full of stuff). Love them. Oh and did we mention that we got a surprise snowstorm (which actually caused quite the adventure when it came to physically getting things from one house to another- more details on that later).
Long story short, after hours of unpacking and trying to settle the bean and the pooch we collapsed into bed our mattress on the floor at around 1am. And although we’ve never been more tired, we couldn’t stop perma-smiling. There’s nothing like the first night spent in your new house. And thankfully Clara and Burger appeared to feel the same way (so far they’ve been varsity adjusters to the whole thing). We’ll have more details about moving day and some pics of the new house just as soon as we can get them together for ya (maybe this afternoon?). But for now, let’s feast our eyes on the former Casa Petersik in its first-day-as-compared-to-last-day glory. First here’s a look back at the old exterior to compare to our snow pic above:
And here’s what the living room looked like when we moved in:
Here’s what it looked like when we closed the door that final time:
And here’s the kitchen then:
And now:
The den then:
The den as we left it:
The master bedroom then:
And the master bedroom now:
Here’s the office/guest bedroom/playroom then:
And that room now:
Here’s the room that was a formal dining room when we moved in:
That we left as a nursery (after removing Clara’s beloved light fixture and curtains- the only light/curtains that we just couldn’t leave behind):
And here’s the sunroom back when we moved in (sorry for the terrible angle- we had no idea we’d need a good before shot when we snapped it):
And here’s the sunroom as we left it:
So although it was a little sad when that door closed (believe it or not, I didn’t even cry!) it was amazingly wonderful to open a new door (both literally and figuratively) to our new house. And we couldn’t be more excited to share that next chapter of our lives with you guys. More pics and details as soon as we can sling ’em your way!
Psst- Ack, and we have to change our header and the name of the House Tour tab (to “Old House”- and add a “New House” one full of befores). Here’s hoping we find a moment to do that in the next few days…
Patty says
I am so thrilled to follow you on your next adventure!!! I really loved that sunroom at the old casa though!! What a treat to have a room like that!!
Looking forward to more of your pictures and postings! Best of luck to you all!!
Tiffany says
I am so excited for you guys. I actually feel like I’m the one moving.
Dannielle says
I’m sad to see the old house empty especially since I’ve been following for quite some time and you’re the first webpage I view in the mornings at work. I was just thinking too that you guys are great for cleaning and painting and patching everything before you left. When I moved into my home, people were not so kind to us! We had a lot of cleaning and painting to do that we are still doing! But, I also really love how you’re moving into a new house in the new year. It’s a fresh start for the new year! Really LOVE that. Here’s to many more adventures in your new house with little Miss Clara. Enjoy it! Can’t wait to see the new home! I’ve been on edge for weeks now!

Those next owners are lucky ducks – you’ve left the place looking so beautiful!
Meghan (Bristol, UK) says
Thank you so much for sharing all of this over the past few years – I’ve only caught on recently, but have been following almost addictively since. What a wonderful set of before and after pictures – your buyers are certainly getting a wonderful house! Fingers crossed for a pain-free move-in and for the future for you all! x

You guys did such a great job transforming that house! I’m so inspired looking at these photos. Congrats on the new place!! Can’t wait to see it!

your memories of your old house will never die and your new house brings lots of fun adventures.
congrats!

It’s amazing what a couple (hundred) cans of paint can do! Y’all really have a gift for being able to see the potential in a place – can’t wait to see the new one!
Congratulations!
Handy Man, Crafty Woman says
kinda sad, but so exciting at the same time.
Also, can I just thank you guys for leaving the house so spotless and sparkly clean for the next people! Each house we’ve moved into (3 now) has been disgustingly dirty when we moved in. We had to clean before we could unpack (ick!)
Tiffannie says
So bittersweet! Congratulations on the new house…I can’t WAIT to see it and watch you transform it into something AMAZING again!
Angie K says
Phew! So happy all went well for the move.
You should really be proud of the transformation you brought to that home. You really, truly, brought life back into a home that could just have easily been forgotten and passed by for a more modern cookie cutter home.
Amy says
You guys should be so proud of what you accomplished with that house. You completely revived it and it looks like a totally different place. What a great gift to the future owners and to the house itself. Congratulations on the move and best wishes. I can’t wait to see pictures of the new place!!!
Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons says
Wow… I almost got a little choked up.. So I can only imagine how you guys feel! What an adventure! <3

I didn’t expect to feel sad, but I did, looking at all those empty rooms! We had issues with closing too (entirely the seller’s, we were first-time home owners, so nothing to sell!) and because we had to cancel/reschedule our movers (military, we didn’t pay for them) once and didn’t want to again, the family also gave us the keys the night before we closed. We got ’em Thursday night and the movers came Fri. morning! Anyway, the way they did it was to “rent” us the house for one day for $0! Kinda silly, but we appreciated it and it really helped us out to get our stuff in before the weekend!
Alondra says
This is so exciting! I can’t help feeling a bit sad looking at those empty rooms (and crazy that I feel a connection to a house I only know online!). Here’s to a fresh start at the new place; way to go you two!
Sara says
It was neat to see some photos of angles of your house (both the before and after) that I don’t think you have ever shared before or haven’t shown very often.
The second kitchen before photo had me confused for a minute, I didn’t realize you had a shelf around that side of the kitchen or that there was a weird plug in lamp there.
I’m so excited to see how your next house evolves, congrats on your second “new, old house”.

The new homeowners of your first home must be thrilled….the house seems to be filled with so many great memories! Can’t wait to see your creative talents in your new home!

That picture of the empty sunroom makes me want to twirl through there like it’s a ballroom!
Congratulations on a suuccessful move, Youngsters!

what a sad image… Can’t wait to see the new “Casa Petersik”
Dana @ House*Tweaking says
Those are some lucky homeowners…the peeps that bought your first home. It looks amazing even empty. I’m a little sad. I kind of feel like I moved! How silly is that? But I’m more excited to see another one of your adventures begin. Congrats on your new old home. Get some rest!
PS- We moved on the 20th of December three years ago in the Midwest. It was cold and snowy. We had a Charlie Brown Christmas tree that year. It was barely big enough to sit on top of a kid’s table. We put our {few} gifts around it on the table and it was the most home-y Christmas we’ve ever had. I wish the same for you!
Tracey says
I would kill for a house like yours. I’m a sucker for a white kitchen. I think your den and kitchen are my favorite parts of your first home. And i’m stupid excited to see what’s next!

Someone is getting such a great home! Best of luck at the new place you guys!

I noticed your washer and dryer in the empty photos… Did you have to leave your energy efficent Washer/Dryer behind? And does the new house have them as well or is that on the to buy urgently list?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Alicia,
Yup, we sold them with the house and the owners of our new house did the same (theirs are older but still work so we’ll probably upgrade to an energy star set when there’s a good sale in the future).

I’m so excited for you guys! It’s sad to see the old house we’ve all grown to love go, but I’m also very excited to see what new projects you guys have coming up and how the new house evolves into the new Young House Love. Congrats you guys! (especially in this economy!)

Your house is so beautiful, I would move right in and not change a thing! What a difference all your hard work made. It really is a showplace now, and it was so sad and dark before!
Can’t wait to see the before pics of the new casa! It’s so exciting to think about all the projects ahead!
Glad to hear that you have all settled right into the new place. I can’t believe how you’ve been keeping us in the loop with everything going on! You guys are amazing, and we all love being part of this adventure!

I am an avid follower–have been for well over a year, and I have to say, it was a real encouragement to me to see the empty house. Why? Because aside from the kitchen and bathroom (total gut jobs, essentially) all the other “changes” are so do-able! And so many were cosmetic! That makes me feel good about my chances to improve my own house, with just doing a few *major* changes, but keeping the rest of the items really budget friendly. My house has good bones, just like yours, and built in the 1950’s.
Kristin (Aust) says
Oh wow…. can’t believe you didn’t cry Sherry… Even I had a tiny little sniffle!!! Congrats on completing the big move successfully – glad to hear Clara and Burger were little troopers (that’s always the worry isn’t it, that the kids won’t cope and you’ll have a house full of boxes and poor little grumpy people/puppies). Looking forward to following the next chapter of your lives – if its anything like what you’ve shared so far, it will be awesome :)
All the best

It is soooo lovely. The new owners will be ecstatic to walk into such a charming house that needs no renovations what-so-ever. You guys did an amazing job with it and I will miss seeing it everyday. Can’t wait to see what you do with the new place, though!

No matter how many times I’ve looked at these photos incrementally over the months, I never fail to marvel at the before/after transformations you wrought! It’s fascinating to see all these images one after the other. Fantastic work!

You did an amazing job and the new owners are very lucky!

My god, I’m jealous of your new owners. I guarantee their friends are all saying, “I can’t believe you found such a beautiful, well-cared-for house!” I think the best feature is the kitchen. And the two fireplaces. And the backyard. And the sunroom … Oh, well, it all makes me even more excited to see what you do with your new home. :)
I have to say, I felt mildly cheated as I scrolled through and thought, “Oh, we’ve never seen the room from THAT angle before!” Hahaha, I’m so nosy.
Julie says
LOOOOVE the before and after pictures. You guys did an awesome job on the house. I cannot wait for us to buy our first house!!
Lindsay H says
Isn’t it weird what you get sad over? I knew you had mentioned before that your closet contraption was requested to stay, but I was surprise to see your bed frame there. Probably cause it fit perfectly. But I did get sad for your kitchen sink faucet! Random. Just remembered how excited you were for it.
I thought it was interesting to go through your photos to see what items you left behind, shelves in living room, curtains, etc.

It’s the end of an era! I started reading way, way back when you first started your kitchen remodel and it’s been an amazing journey so far! Can’t wait to see photos of the new house!
Kate L. says
I’m so happy for you guys!!! I feel like I had such a bond with your old house… isn’t that weird? It was such an inspiration for me; sad to see it be so empty! Good memories, right? I can’t wait to see what you have in store for the new. I know we’ll all “bond” with it too!
:)

It’s so great after the transformation! I’m already exited to see what you are going to do with your new home!

Wow, you guys were very generous to leave all the lighting fixtures and window treatments behind! Did you leave your appliances behind too? The fridge? Washer and dryer? And your touch faucet too! Whoa.
Congrats on the new house!
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, all of it conveyed for a nice quick sale. We got all that stuff with the new house anyway (they conveyed all their appliances, etc) so it worked out!

I think that the same person who did your old house cabinets did mine! They look exactly like the ones that I am in the process of removing from my VA home.
Gritt says
Question regarding your old home: the wood flooring in your living and bedroom, did you stain it (diy?) or did you replace it?
Also, what type of flooring did you put in your sunroom?
thanks so much for your time and I enjoy reading your blog.
Gritt
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Gritt,
We got it refinished by a pro that a friend of ours recommended. He was super reasonable and did an amazing job matching it to the new hardwoods that we installed in the kitchen, den, laundry nook, half bath, and back hallway. As for the sunroom, that room was carpet over concrete, so we ripped up the carpet and just painted the concrete with concrete floor paint in a rich chocolate color. We have a tutorial all about it on our Projects page (see that tab up near the header?). Hope it helps!

I like that I can see how you hung your curtains “high and wide” because of the empty rod in Clara’s room! I had been wondering what that meant. Do you have a post somewhere about how to hang curtains like this? Do you use 84 or 96″ curtains? Do you have to hem them?
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s a post all about hanging curtains for ya. We actually hem them with iron on hem tape (no sew stuff from Michael’s) so they end up around 90″ long for a perfect almost-floor-to-ceiling look that we love.
