…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

I read YHL daily! You guys are great! I love your DIY ideas and seeing before and after pictures.
I would love to know more of where/how you get your inspiration. Perhaps more stores you purchase from? Montana lacks stores, but it would be great to know what your favs are.
I think you guys should talk about house ideas-even if they don’t pan out or you decide to go a different route. I am ALWAYS in need of decorating ideas and would love additional options!
I would love for more people to check out my Etsy shop (even though I recently did a giveaway on here!) My shop is: customizedstationary.etsy.com

1. Married 24 year old female, basically in your demographic. My husband and I have been married almost two years and we met while studying theatre together in college. We live in Birmingham, Alabama. We’re pretty handy because of our background in the arts (and our continuing state of semi-poverty). We’ll be closing on our first house on Oct. 28 and we’re super excited. We have a Great Dane named Angus (which cracks me up — Angus — Burger — giant Great Dane — itty-bitty Chihuahua — hilarious! or maybe that’s just me…)
2. Everyday and almost always at work. You guys are strangely one of the few websites not blocked by the corporate fire-wall — maybe someone in IT is a fan? I check in sometimes from home, too, so that I can watch the videos. And I jump to other blogs that I like from your link list.
3. The organization/housekeeping posts help us out a lot. We’re handy and crafty, but not always so tidy. We’re working really hard on getting better at this stuff and your advice is always very helpful. I also really enjoy the level of detail you go into in general. I feel like I get a very clear sense of how each space evolved from before to after (and how long it took), which is encouraging when it feels like my place is really lame.
4. I love the house-crashing. I think more of that would be fun.
5. I don’t know if this really fits this question, but one thing I’d like to know is how you decide when to skimp on stuff and when to buy up. We’re struggling with this a lot at this stage in our lives. We’re finally getting to that point where you want a more cohesive/nicer grade of furniture than your hand-me-downs and 3-year-old-thrift-store-doggy-smelling sofa, and you’ve got a little more money but you still can’t afford the really good stuff. I sometimes feel like it’s not very responsible to buy the $300 Ikea sofa, knowing it may not last but figuring you’ll get a better one in five years. But maybe it is okay. I don’t know. You don’t want to create waste, but you don’t want to sit on the dog-stank sofa either! (It’s not that bad, I just shampooed it. Please don’t think I’m a big slob!)
6. Really enjoy your stuff, even though our style is very different. I think it’s really cool that you can appeal to people whose taste is not exactly your own. And I’m not going to tell you to hurry up and have a baby! Keep having fun together for a while. (I hate it when folks do that to us, even though it is a really sweet compliment in a way.)
Sorry to ramble…

Hi John & Sherry! I’m 29, female, not married, no kids, and I started reading YHL last winter when a friend of mine passed on the blog and an article in the Washington Post. I was living in Charlottesville at the time and I go to Richmond a lot so I loved hearing about a local-ish couple made good. We’ve since turned all of our friends on to the blog as well :) It’s totally made me more interested in interior design and DIY furniture projects (although I’ve yet to attempt anything yet–still apartment hunting). I love going to the same shops and haunts ya’ll frequent like Ruth & Ollie’s, and the local house tours are my favorite. Especially the amazing older homes VA has to offer–just the other day my family was up visiting my brother in Forest Hills and we took the neighborhood house tour. I have to say I was way more into it because of YHL! So thanks for all your hard work and fun attitude!

3. My favorite posts are the ones that show your house. I love everything you’ve done to it and it’s fun to see pictures of it from different angles. I also enjoy the before and after photos, easy DIY ideas, and the tips on how you run your household (money saving tips, cleaning, and organizational tips). I also really like the posts on decorating with affordable items from places like Target, Ikea, and Walmart and appreciate that you always include the details (such as where you got the item, paint color, etc.).
4. I’d like to see more house crashing tours and “after” photos.
5. I’d like to hear more about what you do for gift-giving and entertaining. I was inspired by your starfish santas last year (our family made them and they turned out great!) and would love for you to share gift ideas for holidays like mother’s day and birthdays.
6. I found your blog when I googled “water chestnut” (the color I painted most of the interior space in my home) and have been reading it every day since then. Thanks so much for the great blog and for keeping it upbeat and drama-free!

2. I just discovered you guys about a month ago, so I am here daily (mostly from work!) reading what is new and digging into the archives a bit
3. I like the before and afters, your mood boards, and your thrifty ideas and DIYs. I really enjoyed your wedding re-cap too, it was lovely to see a couple doing so much “I could do that too” work and seeing such an amazing event come from a modest budget.
4. Keep the ideas flowing, you guys have a style that mirrors very closely what I enjoy and am aiming for at our house.
5. Nothing comes to mind.
6. Great call on the Valspar Fabulous Red. I was looking for red door color suggestions and that is how I found your website. I get more compliments on our “little house with the red door.” Other than that, just that your enthusiasm translates over the Internet and as we continue to make our new house a home, its nice to visit a well put together, thoughtful and entertaining website that keeps giving me more ideas.

5. How about decorating a Great Room! We have one in our new home and haven’t moved in yet, but I know it’s going to be a challenge because of the size and shape of the room.
6 My husband and I just bought our first home which was built in 1953 and added on in 2002. While we were looking for homes I came upon your site and got hooked instantly. It even has a brick front and a smaller scale porch.

1. I am a pre-30 professional singer living just outside of Washington, DC. I am married and have two cats.
2. I usually check the blog once a day.
3. As a new home owner, I always appreciate the easy DIY ideas and I love (LOVE) before and after pictures. I also like when you feature reader makeovers.
4. I could use fewer design dilemmas. They aren’t as interesting to read because they are a bit of an information overload. I love seeing them when they have an after picture though. Just reading about it isn’t quite as interesting.
5. I always appreciate money saving tips.
6. Check out my renovation blog! http://www.mrsallenshouse.blogspot.com Also, I’ll be singing a concert in at the Richmond public library on October 10th if you want to come listen to some fun early music with harpsichord and other baroque instruments: http://www.arceci-mckean.info :)

2. I read whenever my blog reader pulls down a post from here.
3. I like DIY and major projects. I’m waiting for you to join the Benjamin Moore Aura paint fan club, but I realize that you may solidly be in the Glidden camp for a while. :)
4. I think it’d be interesting to do unbiased testing of products. While I realize that you have sponsors and your have commitments/responsibilities to them, it would be interesting to see you walk through purchases and write about your research, testing, and experience with the different options. I hate to say it, but I sometimes assume that you use certain products because of sponsorships.
5. Just as some bloggers share info about how they take their spectacular pictures, I could see you sharing tips about using Photoshop and iMovie effectively to show off home design projects.
