…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

Who are you? Sarah, 27, Melbourne Australia. Im living with my partner – we literally JUST moved into our first house! No kids, or pets yet. but Puppy wont be far away!
How often do you read Young House Love? Pretty much every day!
What are your favorite types of posts & why? I really like the before and after pictures and the DIY ideas – having just moved into our first place I am looking for inspiration wherever I can get it!
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? One thing I am really struggling with are paint colours – the place we are in has really strong colours that I wouldnt have picked – bright red and navy blue feature walls and I want to paint over them, but picking colours is a big struggle for me! I’d love to see some options on working with stronger colours.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Perhaps where you go to get all your inspiration? I am not a natural decorated so any inspiration I can get is helpful!
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? Just keep doing what you are doing! I love your site and its been a great inspiration to me!

2.I’ve been following the blog daily for a while.
3. I actually enjoy all the posts, especially any that include a before & after photo or step-by-step instructions.
4.It would be great if you could collaborate with some people who have children, for some of the “design dilemmas” or organizing which include houses with kids. Sometimes I just LOL at your solutions, becuase it’s obvious ya’ll don’t have kids of your own–but that’s all meant to be taken in good spirits. You guys are great!
5.I think you guys are right on, and should stick with what you do best–which you already are! Your blog is a lot of fun!
6.How can I pretty up the exterior of my typical 1950’s Split Level style home? It’s nothing out of the ordinary, and lots of readers probably have that house style, but most of these Split Levels are just so “blah.”

1. Who are you? I’m Jessica a 23 year old female. I am married (1 year and counting!) We live in Raleigh and do not have any kids yet. Our puppy Charlie (a west highland white terrier) is going to have a rude awakening when we do have kids though…he basically thinks he is the only thing that matters!
2. I read it daily and have recently gotten my husband to look at the before and after pictures…hoping to inspire him to get some projects done around our house.
3. I love the diy posts. I am currently in grad school so it is difficult for us to justify spending lots of money on a simple throw pillow. The ideas that show how to diy some of those expensive items are wonderful!
4. It might be nice to kind of get your thoughts on how you visualize a project. When I look at what you do I always think “I never would have thought of that, or pictured that.” Share with us your thought process so we can get a little vision ourselves.
5. Do you ever feel like you will be done with your house? What will you do when you are?
6. Maybe a little more information about your resources. I feel like you must have about a million stores bookmarked. How do you find them?

I love seeing how you decorate homes/nuseries/sunrooms etc. on the cheap and make it look serene, put together, well designed and all around awesome. I also love when you put the prices and other sources for the things that you use.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I love the DIYS and tutorials.
5.Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Just how do you come up with these ideas? And how do you know where to find the most amazing pieces so inexpensive. Do you just spend all of the time that you aren’t vamping up your house (or someone else’s) crusing the interweb for great design deals . . .?
6.Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!) 3. I love Reader Redesign the best! It’s so fun to see before and afters.
4. Keep up the giveaways, those are great. Last year I had multiple ideas, but this year, I’m stumped. I love the site. I see feedback you give people on facebook (usually in response to things they ask on your wall) and would love to see some of that reflected here. That may be too repetative for you, but I don’t typically read much of your facebook, so I miss out on so much of that.
5. I love hearing occasional personal stories (like your roadtrip video was Amazing!) While it is a design blog, it’s fun to get the glimpse of who you two truly are too. Maybe more occasional what-we-did-this-weekend post or a whats-for-dinner-at-casa-petersik post?
6. I’ve loved your blog for a couple years now. I finally dove in headfirst and started my own. Mostly for family and friends to keep up with our lives. We’ll see what it grows into though. I’m still finding my voice and focus.

Something like would you ever paint over 1960’s blond wood? or If you have wood floors can you put laminate next to them in the other room? Something that will guide readers in making their own design decisions, but not nearly as in depth as an entire mood board.

I adore him, but feel less enthusiastic when he wants to wake me up at 4am for attention!
2. How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
Daily. Often I’ll check in a few times a day just to see if you’ve posted an update. Yep, I’m sad like that!
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
How to tips (ie money management, reno tips, how to clean etc); before and afters, videos (i’ll admit the stalker in me loved the last one you posted about the questions… which has brougth about a question of my own – what do you store leftovers in if not plastic? I’m single and live alohe so a dinner often becomes lunch for the next three days!)
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
Keep posting! Possibly having something else to go with a design dilemma (ie a how to article as well) and encouraging more fans to submit the ‘afters’ of their design dilemmas so we can get a better idea of how to translate a mood board into reality!
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
I think it’s pretty great as is!
I like the mix of home reno/lifestyle management (money, tips etc)/ cute snippets of your life. It’s a great mix and definatekly keeps me coming back for more! (cough-obsessively-checking-for-updates-cough)
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Your blog has inspired me to keep a blog of my own home renovation – I dont plan to make it a big commercial enterprise and I dont think I have the star quality that you guys offer, I just want to keep a journal of my progress so I can look vback when it’s all done. Additionally, so I can see how far I’ve come as I move along the reno journey so I keep pushing for domestic perfection!

I’m Paula – 26, married, dog and cat, renting an apartment in the West End.
I read daily. My favorite posts are before and afters, remodeling, new and cheap decorating ideas.
More pictures “after” you’ve done the boards.
I wouldn’t change anything else.
Keep it up!

1.Who are you? I am a married female(36 years old – married for 16 years) with 4 kids in a house about the same size as yours We have lots of together time here in Tennessee. :)2.How often do you read Young House Love? I love to check YHL at least once a day.
3.What are your favorite types of posts & why? I love the fact that you work with real houses and that your adorable house is decorated for everyday living. Please continue the design dilemmas and DIY tutorials. I can’t wait to start my porch – once it stops raining here.
4.What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?) I sincerely appreciate the detailed tutorials. I feel much more capable of tackling projects with the specific directions you offer.
5.Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? YHL is my go-to blog for all house design/decorating/DIY stuff. If you do add other topics please organize them separately so I don’t have to search. Thank you.
6.Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? Thank you for having fun, smiling, and sharing with the rest of us.

1. Who are you? Female, Age 26, living in a quaint suburban town in upstate NY. Used to live in San Francisco and Boston, and while I miss SF, I really love my suburban life. Married for a year and a 1/2, but together for almost 7 years (wow, I totally just dated myself). We have one kid of the canine persuasion as of right now, but plan to have human children in the near future (as long as I don’t make my hubby take on too many home reno projects!).
2. How often do you read Young House Love? DAILY. I’m addicted. Thanks guys.
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why? I LOVE the videos, love the before and after stuff and all of the “green” tips, as well as product information (when you list where you purchased something or offer an alternative product).
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? More videos, more “how-to” stuff in regards to doing a makeover on something (for example, a how-to blog about painting kitchen cabinets or an old dresser). And definitely, more of the Burgmeister!
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Please share more about the downside of home renovation – keep it real, like you’ve been doing! We’re in the process of nitpicking our new house and I’m making mental notes of everything I want to do to it. I’d love to know what I am really getting myself into.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? I love what you guys are doing. It’s so inspiring and motivating to me, and also empowering. I think as women, we tend to shy away from power tools, sledgehammers and DIY home renovation in general since girls are supposed to play with Barbies and boys are supposed to play with Legos. Well, here’s to busting those gender sterotypes! Thanks for this blog- seriously.
Oh yeah, we also have about a gazillion nicknames for our pup Jake. Let’s see, there’s Jakemeister, J Man, J-Dog, Jake the Snake, Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Jakiepoo, Puglet (he’s a Beagle/Pug mix), J-Train, Jakiedoodle..and then there’s simple the nickname Trouble.
Again, thanks for being so inspiring and making this DIY stuff seem doable. Ciao!

2. I read you guys every time my Google Reader updates me that you have updated!
3. My favorite posts are of redesigns that readers send or or that you guys have done, or that comment on someone else’s style and what works in a space.
4. I think it may be interesting to show pictures of spaces that don’t work and why you think they need work and what you would do to help improve them. More than just the design boards you do, mabye you could show things from HGTV shows and why you do/don’t like them (like Design Star rooms, etc) I also LOVE hearing about you two in college, how you met, what you’ve done in your lives (travel, etc) – oh, and I love UVA even though I went to William and Mary :)
5. Love you guys, please don’t stop writing any time soon! Oh, and when can we expect kids?! I kid, I kid…

1. I’m a 48 year old mom of 2 boys (13 and 11), married for 22 years to a great guy.
2. I read as often as you post.
3. I love before and afters.
4. YHL is like Mary Poppins: practically perfect in every way. The only thing that I’d like to change about it (and this is admittedly small, but as I said, you are just about perfect) is to put a moratorium on the phrases: “pops of color” and “bursting with potential”. Pretty please?
5. I love your simple and easy ideas (like putting the olive oil bottle on a white plate) that don’t cost much (or anything, even) and that can be done in a second. I also loved your cleaning tips! That was a great idea.
6. And I want the world to know…YOU TWO!

2. I read YHL every day… I often check at work, when I’m bored & at home in the evenings
3. I love the DIY and before and afters, but they’re all pretty interesting
4. If ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I think you guys include just the right amount of personal stories with other items. the road trip post was a lot of fun, very cute video.
5. Where do you find inspiration? I also liked a suggestion above, about wish lists and if your budget was unlimited, what sort of purchases would you make

2. How often do you read Young House Love?
Too often. I can’t admit it, I’m still a closet blogger. :)
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
I love seeing how your home has come together. So I love all the little posts on ideas that you have incorporated in to bringing it all together. There’s a virtue to loving what you have…and making a home with what you can afford…you guys really do that well.
And I get giddy when I see a design dilemma posted. ;)
3. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
Keep up the videos!

1. Female, 30, Alexandria VA, Married for 3.5 years!, No kids…yet, a spoiled cat! and usually a pampered dog(s) staying with us because of our pet sitting business
2. Daily – its part of my home page after busn e-mail & weather
3. Easy DIY, Before & after, videos, Save It, Fab Freebie (I’m determined to win something!)
4. I think I’ve seen before where when someone asks a question about a post in the comment area you’ve updated the actual post if it adds to it. That is great because sometimes there are too many comments to read, but sometimes there’s some great stuff there so I don’t want to miss it. Often time I just scroll through looking for your responses. :)
5. More house crashing and organizing ideas (like how the peeps you crash organize since we know your secrets)
6. Question: Is the smiley face on the bottom of your blog & top of Bower Power a ‘blog friend thang’ or coincidence? :)

Hey Sarah W,
Haha that weird little smiley face is a code thing. Looks like John and I (and Katie B) have some code crawling to do to find that little bugger…
xo,

1. I’m a 27 year old female who lives in San Bruno CA (near the San Francisco Airport) with her parents and younger brother. I’m single and have no kids or pets.
2. I read Young House Love daily.
3. My favorite posts are DIY, before & afters, major home improvements, and anything else house related.
4. Suggestions: I’m not a fan of the videos as that means I have to go find my headphones. Sometimes the Before & Afters are a little hard to compare when you have to keep scrolling up and down to see them both…maybe post them side by side?
6. Your blog makes me eager to buy my own place and fix it up!
Sarah says
Who are you? Female, 32, San Diego, CA, in a long term relationship, no kids but I have two black cats (doubly lucky) that exasperate me as much as any kids would (of course I love them).
How often do you read Young House Love? Daily, usually while I eat my breakfast or lunch.
What are your favorite types of posts & why? I really like the Design Dilemmas and the before and after’s. I also like when you visit places like Ikea and Target and recommend cool stuff.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Are you still doing the Design Dilemmas lite (where you just helped people work mostly with they’ve got, i.e. rearranging furniture, etc.)? If so, I would really like to see the results of those and other low-budget makeovers.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? I’m curious about your families, and I’m interested in Sherry’s experience as a copywriter.
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? YHL is probably my favorite blog. You two are doing a great job.
Thanks!

2. How often do you read Young House Love?
I stalk you via Google Reader so I read whenever you post!
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
The before and afters of people putting into place YOUR designs are my favorite. Oh, and DIY rocks my crappy-economy-world.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
I’m not sure I’d change anything. What you’ve done has gotten you this far for a reason.
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
Maybe a bit more about your “green” choices. Yall just seem to be the ideal of “normal” and yet eco-conscious.

THANK YOU for a fun and design inspiring blog. Most tend towards one or the other…. YHL makes me laugh AND want to paint my living room (with low voc paint). :)
